DIZNEY COAST TO COAST - The Ultimate Unofficial Disney Fan Podcast
Disney fans rejoice! I have Kathleen Gavin joining me to discuss her first producing job with Disney on the animated feature “Oliver & Company”. Kathleen enjoyed a twenty-year career with Disney as she hopped around to numerous divisions while literally being a big part of saving Disney animation as it was actively on the chopping block. Kathleen was brought in to streamline the animation process and to make the process repeatable for years to come. Decades of animated films later, it seems Kathleen succeeded in her mission. And that was with zero prior experience in the world of animation. Listen as we discuss the making of the film and the historic significance of this movie you might not initially think of when pondering “Oliver & Company”. That and so much more is coming your way on this episode of Dizney Coast to Coast. ------ EPISODE LINKS: Ep. 1132 - Kathleen Gavin and more discuss "The Nightmare Before Christmas". ------ GIVEAWAYS, BONUSES AND SUPPORT: Gain early access to episodes, take part in live streams, and gain more bonuses by joining the DCTC Patreon. With hindsight on our side we will admit over and over again that we were probably too harsh on this animated gem. Oliver & Company is pretty dark on the spectrum of Disney animated feature films but we kind of like that. It's on theme for 1980s NYC. There is so much to love about this movie we are kind of embarrased we were so harsh on it initially. We're sorry Oliver. Here's another shot just for you. Here's your second chance Sunday. DISCLAIMER This episode was originally recorded under the old podcast show name and contains "quacks" of swear words. Be kind...we have learned a lot since then.
Oliver & Company is objectively not one of the best Disney animation films...actually it's not even close. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't have bits and pieces going on. Join Kirbs and Lish as they discuss the good, the bad and the renaissance energy that is undoubtedly in the building.
PASSENGER 28: Walt Disney Animation director (“Oliver & Company," “The Prince & the Pauper"), Walt Disney Imagineer (“Mickey's PhilharMagic,” “Gran Fiesta Starring the Three Caballeros”), and fine artist (Panama Canal Expansion, Shanghai Disneyland, Disney Cruise Lines”), George Scribner! Renaissance artist George Scribner lives three distinct lives: traditional animator and former Walt Disney Animation director, responsible for the classic “Oliver & Company,” Walt Disney Imagineering attraction director, whose projects include “Mickey's PhilharMagic” worldwide, the Magic Lamp Theater at Tokyo Disneyland, and “Gran Fiesta Starring the Three Caballeros” inside Epcot's Mexico Pavilion, and fine artist extraordinaire, who from 2007 to 2016 documented in breathtaking oil paintings the expansion of the Panama Canal (his place of birth), the construction of Shanghai Disneyland, and now the Disney Cruise Lines. Plan now to join us as George boards our time machine for an unforgettable journey through his fascinating career, including stops for leading the story and concept designs for Disney's “The Lion King,” and “Fantasia 2000,” and working for legendary animators Chuck Jones and Hanna-Barbera!

In this week's episode of the Once Again Podcast, hosts Ashley and Jason discuss the 1988 Disney classic (and in our opinion, launch of the Disney Renaissance) Oliver & Company. Orphan kitten Oliver (Joey Lawrence) befriends a New York City gang of dogs lead by Dodger (Billy Joel) and their human Fagin (Dom DeLuise). But when the gang mistakes Oliver's adoption for a kidnapping, antics ensue. So ask yourself, why should you worry? Why should you care? Just sit back, relax, and enjoy our episode full of street savior faire! Unusual Magic Jewelry:https://www.etsy.com/shop/UnusualMagicJewelry?ref=profile_header

On the twenty-third installment of the Pop Goes The Classics series looking at the Disney animated features, Andy Atherton, Steve Riddle & Mirandia Berthold look at 1988's Oliver & Company. They discuss the many aspects of the film including: how the adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic is translated in the film; the cast of well-known actors providing the voices; how the movie captures New York City; the modern-day setting; how catchy Billy Joel's “Why Should I Worry?” is; the obligatory henchmen duo of Roscoe & DeSoto; the bond Dodger and the gang has with each other; the terrifying and ruthless portrayal of Sykes as well as the violence & gruesomeness around his demise and how it is the last release before “the second golden age” of Disney animated films begins.

Oliver & Company was a safe bet on all fronts. It was loaded with celebrity voice talent, had popular musicians making music for it, and was a talking-dog movie, one of Disney's more common and beloved movie categories. But it didn't do as well as expected, being beat in its opening weekend by The Land Before Time. Disney was not back on top yet. It would take their next film - The Little Mermaid - for that to happen. But why is that? Why did this film not become as big as most of the films that would follow it for the next decade? Is it bad? Or is this a hidden gem just waiting for reappraisal? Listen to find out! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howsitholdup/support
For our last episode of 2021 we decided to re-edit and re-release one of our most divisive episodes, not between the two of us but between us and a particular incident. Many of you may recall the Instagram incident about Oliver & Company, well we are putting it out again and no we didn't change our opinion. Hope you enjoy it...again :)
Episode SummaryOnce upon a time in New York City, a movie about dogs brought up a lot of questions about class, race, and gender. Erin revisits one of her favorite childhood films in this episode about Oliver & Company (1988), while Rachel remains steadfast in her stance that the lone kitten is the only good part. Do you remember two hidden gems of Disney? Two hallmarks of animation that took scores in a different direction and showed you could tell a story with classic composers and still have a modern sensibility? Well today I look back at The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company. Two films about the little guys. Mice and Dogs and Cats. This is the show for you today. I present this as I look back at the voice talent, the animation styles and even the eclectic scores of these two brilliant films. Come with me and join me as I go into depth on these. Enjoy!

We've finally done it: here's an episode about a legit Disney animated feature. Maybe not a good one, but still. Drew Taylor, who's an editor and writer at Collider, the author of The Art of Onward, the co-host of the Mission Impossible podcast Light the Fuse, and an all-around Disney expert, joins Garrett Martin to talk about the 1988 film Oliver & Company, the first animated feature fully produced during the Eisner/Katzenberg era of Disney, and a significant--if not particularly good--part of the Disney canon.
It's time to go back to the 80s as we find out what happened Once Upon A Time In New York City with the 28th Disney Animated Classic, Oliver & Company. Join your our gang of Disney Podcasters - Ellie, Ethan, Georgia, and Ian - as we get into a New York State of Mind with this reimagining of Charles Dickens' seminal classic, Oliver Twist. Georgia espouses love for the ginger-haired, titular character while Ellie finds a spirit animal in Bette Midler's Georgette, Ethan isn't feeling the chihuahua energy of Cheech Marin and Ian makes a lot of comparisons of Oliver & Company to Treasure Planet (and you know that's not going to end well). More than anything though, Ian and Ethan try to one up each other on Billy Joel puns to the chagrin of Georgia and Ellie who aren't as familiar with New York's finest PIano Man. Also, this week we continue our segment of 'A Pause For The Parks" featuring some content from friend of the podcast, Andrew. So, catch up on some great Disney content and then join the conversation (@talkthemickey), Instagram (@talkingthemickey), or on our Facebook page (@talkingthemickey). We know perfect isn't easy, but that's hardly an excuse. This week we watch 1988's Oliver & Company and grapple with one of the questions the film asks us from nearly the beginning: Why should we care? The music still slaps - despite the unused talents of Sheryl Lee Ralph - but otherwise we're not entirely sure about the longstanding value of this Dickensian mish mosh. Sure, it's the only role in which Billy Joel doesn't play himself... but is that it? Make no bones about it, we were doggone frustrated this week. But hey - why should we ca-a-re? Doowopilation! (Apologies for the bad audio this week! Our microphone zonked out) WHY SHOULD I WORRY? No worries here, in the great state of NEW YORK and the great time of THE EIGHTIES. Watch a bunch of cool cats (one cat and a lot of dogs) roam through construction sites unharmed and walk with ease through the chaos (of all our tangents) and clear to the other side. Grab your sausage link scarf and some other food, glorious food, and snuggle up for this classic bed time story: Oliver & Company.
Drunk At The Movies - The Shaggy Dog (2006) For this extra special crossover bonus episode, Briana joins Dustin & Seph from Drunk At The Movies to watch and talk through the Tim Allen remake of The Shaggy Dog. Justine from The Cutaways Podcast joins Kate this week to talk one of her childhood favourites, the 1988 Disney movie, Oliver & Company. A retelling of Oliver Twist with a cat and dogs, but Kate asks the important question, would dogs really be petty criminals? Does the movie live up to Justine’s memories? And what is the quote she and her sister still use to this day? Plus the ladies wonder where the characters back stories went to and if moments in this movie are even too dark for Disney. However, one thing is guaranteed, you will love this episode! Absotively Posilutely! Join the conversation in our facebook group! We're still on our journey towards The Little Mermaid, and this week we thought we'd discuss two men who really changed Disney forever. Alan Menken (composer) and Howard Ashman (lyricist) came together in NYC to write musicals for off-broadway. After Ashman was brought on to Disney for Oliver & Company, he brought Menken (as well as Jodie Benson) with him to work on The Little Mermaid and history was born. Listen to learn about their lives and what they did to change how movies were made at Disney Animation. But you might want some tissues handy, because we also cover the sad circumstance of Howard Ashman's death and how if affected his friends and family.
In this episode, Adam and Patrick chat about Patrick's upcoming trip to Hawaii and his first time playing Kingdom Hearts III. They announce the winner of their Disney prize pack giveaway and cover the latest Disney news. The guys give "Oliver & Company" a second look as part of their "Take Two" series and, as always, they close out the show with some "Quick D." Thanks for listening! We're back with another nostalgia classic, at least for us. This week Aly & Sarrah are discussing Disney's 1988 movie Oliver & Company! Aly starts off with a biography of Charles Dickens and a quick recap/Coles' Notes rundown of Oliver Twist and how it relates to this movie. So if you need info for your highschool lit class.....don't source us. We're not reliable. Sarrah discusses how this movie concept came to be (a gong-show) and where it started (picture either Batman or a panda. No joke). Together we welcome Cheech Marin to the Disney Voice Cast family, and discuss the impact of releasing the same day as Land Before Time! So sit back and listen as we defend this personal favourite against the haters (Siskel) and rejoice in pointing out all it's good points! Why should we worry? This movie is pretty doggone good!
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 11/08/2018 Katie returns to discuss another Disney movie, but they can't all be winners. We're talking about 1988's "Oliver & Company" directed by George Scribner and featuring the voice talents of Billy Joel for some reason, Dom Deluise, Robert Loggia, Cheech Marin, Roscoe Lee Browne and li'l Joey Lawrence.

In this FUN SIZE episode, Ream and Patrick talk about The Land Before Time! The Land Before Time is a 1988 American-Irish animated adventure drama film directed and produced by Don Bluth and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall. Produced by Sullivan Bluth Studios, Amblin Entertainment and Lucasfilm, it features dinosaurs living in the prehistoric times. The plot concerns a young Longneck named Littlefoot who is orphaned[4] when his mother is killed by a Sharptooth. Littlefoot flees famine and upheaval to search for the Great Valley, an area spared from devastation. On his journey, he meets four young companions: Cera the Threehorn, Ducky the Bigmouth, Petrie the Flyer, and Spike the Spiketail. The film explores issues of prejudice between the different species and the hardships they endure in their journey as they are guided by the spirit of Littlefoot's mother and forced to deal with the Sharptooth. This is the only Don Bluth film of the 1980s in which Dom DeLuise did not participate (instead, he starred in Disney's Oliver & Company that same year), and the only film in The Land Before Time series that is not a musical, as well as the only one to be released theatrically worldwide. Released by Universal Pictures on November 18, 1988, the film spawned a franchise with thirteen direct-to-video sequels and a television series as well as merchandise. This episode was very fun! There were exactly 364 days separating the theatrical releases of Disney's The Little Mermaid and this week's film. What a difference a year can make - specifically, the difference between a film that would jumpstart a flailing company and launch them to new, dizzying heights, and one that would take eight years to get released on home video. It's not hard to see why Disney may have wanted to sweep this movie under the rug. Aside from one very catchy song, this film is a mess of lazy animation, stunt voice casting that rarely works out, and a story so loosely based on Dickens' Oliver Twist that the only similarities are four of the characters' names. This week on We Want The D, Vicky, Nolan and Jill watched OLIVER & COMPANY - and for all the savoir faire the characters claim to have, this movie has none.
Which Oliver Twist-related pun should we start this description off with? There are just so many to choose from, even if this week's new Mousterpiece Cinema focuses on an Oliver Twist adaptation, Oliver & Company. So maybe we could say that this is a podcast...podcast for sale. Or we could ask, shocked, if you want...MORE? And so on. Kidding aside, this week's episode is no joke. Gabe and Josh are joined by Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly to revisit this 1988 Disney animated film that represents a transitional period right before Disney's Renaissance period, to sing a few bars of a Billy Joel song or two, and to discuss the state of hand-drawn animation at Walt Disney Feature Animation. If you're a hand-drawn animation advocate--and who isn't?--you'll want to stay around for the whole show, as Anthony describes in detail his recent interview with the head honcho himself, John Lasseter. Now, if you've got just enough street savoir faire, take a listen to this week's show!
