On this week's show, Disneyland veterans, David and Ronn dive into several sizzling Disney topics. The Disneyland Resort Phased Reopening – is only at the Halfway Point?  Wait. What? Another year?! That's right, according to Disneyland President, Ken Potrock, who says the Disneyland Resort has only just reached the halfway point of an extended phased reopening with another year needed before operations fully return to pre-pandemic levels. What does that mean? What operational elements remain that would require an entire year to complete? Was this intentional statement intended to reset our expectations? To buy time for something specific? So many questions! Which non-IP rides would we like (hypothetically) to see made into a movie? Will we see Lightning Lane added to Pirates of the Caribbean with the New Orleans Square remodel? Have we ever skipped work to go to Disneyland?Plus, we remember, celebrate, and honor The Ugly Duckling, Private Pluto, Ub Iwerks, the Midget Autopia, the 'Disneyland' television series, The Bathroom of Tomorrow, and Frank Wells in this week in Disney history. As the 20th century drew to a close, Disney was reflecting on a roller coaster of a decade. Throughout the 90s, every division had experienced both dizzying highs and discouraging lows. The theme parks started the 90s in a rut when Disneyland Paris flopped, but regained its footing when Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom proved a big hit. On the other hand, the animated feature division struck gold early in the decade when Beauty and the Beast, became the first ever animated feature nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, but hit a major rough patch in the mid 90s when controversial powerhouse Jeffrey Katzenberg was fired, and his new studio declared war on his former employer. By the time Tarzan was released in the summer of 1999, Michael Eisner had been the public face of the company for more than ten years. That was true when he worked in partnership with Frank Wells, when he ran the company solo after Wells’ death in 1994, and it would continue to be the case moving into the new millenium, when former ABC President Bob Iger was appointed COO. For better or worse, the buck stopped with Eisner. Tarzan was a big hit, and the parks division was on a hot streak. As the 21st century dawned, Disney was optimistic that Eisner and Iger could continue creating magic together, riding the success they’d had throughout...the Disney Decade. Another D23 Expo has come and gone. Hopefully you caught our slightly inebriated recap of the festivities on Inside The Mouse Castle. Today, we're going to sit down in the Lounge with some of the people who were part of the Expo. Tim's got Kaye Malins and Peter Whitehead with the Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Walt's boyhood home of Marceline, MO. They're going to talk about their ambitious fundraising efforts to restore the Midget Autopia, which was relocated from Disneyland to the city of Marceline in 1966. It operated in Marceline for a number of years before falling into disrepair and now the Museum wants to bring it back…and you can help.   Another great cause to support is the Walt Disney Birthplace in Chicago. It's the actual home designed and built by Walt's parents in 1893 and the very place Walt was born in 1901. The Birthplace is undergoing an extensive restoration and Todd Regan will be here to bring us up to date on how it's progressing.   Before we get to that, though, we'll be joined by the former director of corporate synergy with Disney, Lorraine Santoli. She's also an author who's had a long time association with the original Mouseketeers. In fact, Lorraine hosted a celebration of 60 magical years of the Mickey Mouse Club at the D23 Expo. She was joined on stage by the likes of Sherry Alberoni, Sharon Baird, Bobby Burgess, Tommy Cole, Darlene Gillespie, Cubby O'Brien and Doreen Tracey. It was a delightful presentation.   Before the Expo, Tim and Lorraine chatted on the phone about her latest book, a memoir of her 22 years at the Walt Disney Company, Inside The Disney Marketing Machine. In it, Lorraine recalls the many memorable events she was part of in the 1970s, 80s and 90s including Mickey Mouse's 50th birthday, Donald Duck's 50th birthday and Disneyland's 30th anniversary. She also talks at length about the leadership styles of Disney's top executives during that time, Michael Eisner and Frank Wells. It's an insightful look behind the scenes of an entertainment company on the verge of becoming the media giant it is today.    Enjoy!www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss

In the late 80's and into the 90's, the Walt Disney Company was in a downward spiral.  The company was being torn between the thinking of Walt's nine old men and the new generation of animators with fresh ideas.  A series of takeover threats and mutiny left the company's future in serious doubt .  In a bold move, Roy Disney hired Michael Eisner and Frank Wells to turn things around and save the Walt Disney Company.  These two men, along with several others, led a cut throat culture of greed, jealousy and envy, which would be known as the Disney Renaissance.  With the help of the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty, Nick and Dave tell the story of one of the greatest turnarounds in Disney history through the eyes of the men involved.******************************************************************************Have an idea, question, or want to share your experiences with Nick and Dave on the show?Contact us:mousecapadespodcast@gmail.com(407)674-0414Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Periscope.   For ten years in the 1970s and 80s, Steve Hulett was a story man at Disney Animation, following in the footsteps of his father, longtime Disney artist Ralph Hulett. Steve was with the company during the most unique of times, the period after Walt Disney's death--when his company was struggling to find its identity--until it came back in a big way under the leadership of Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Frank Wells. It was a time when the old guard of Disney animation, the Nine Old Men, were making way for the new blood of Disney Animation, people like Glen Keane, Don Bluth, John Lasseter and Tim Burton.  In his book, "Mouse in Transition," Steve Hulett tells candid tales about his years at Disney where he worked on such films as "The Fox and the Hound," "The Black Cauldron" and "The Great Mouse Detective." In addition to recalling the creative work, Steve shares plenty of stories about the office politics and ego clashes that went on behind the scenes. In part one of Tim's conversation with him today, Steve touches on a few of those stories, as well as a memorable encounter with Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney.  www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss

Here's the second half of Mr. Hickner's audio podcast, and most of the interview in the video version (new camera equipment was a tad glitchy; new processes to learn): TAG Interview with Steve HicknerFind all TAG Interviews on the TAG website at this link Steve arrived at Disney Feature Animation while The Black Cauldron was in work, and plunged into work on the production. After that came The Great Mouse Detective, in the middle of which Michael Eisner, Frank Wells and Jeffrey Katzenberg arrived to remake the studio, top to bottom. Peter Schneider was installed as head of Disney Feature Animation. During the production of live-action/animation hybrid Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Steve asked Mr. Schneider for two minutes of his time, which Peter granted. (Who can turn down a couple of minutes, right?) Mr. Hickner told Peter he had heard a second animation unit for Roger Rabbit was opening, and he wanted to be part of it. Mr. Schneider made Steve no promises (he didn't even admit the unit was being formed), but a short while later Steve was an early assignee into Who Framed Roger Rsabbit's new-formed animation unit. Which demonstrates that it pays not to be shy when there are new worlds to conquer.

This is WEDway Radio episode 60, hosted by Matt and Nate.  This week we begin a new series, Disney MGM Studios 89, which looks at the (then) Disney MGM Studios in its first year.  We begin the series by looking at the development of the Studios from an idea for an Entertainment themed Future World Pavilion at Epcot Center.  This was during the 1980's when the Disney Studio was going through a lot of changes that ultimately led to new leadership, headed by Studio chief Michael Eisner and Frank Wells.  We discuss the different influences that led Disney to create the Studios and the Hollywood star power that Eisner was able to provide and finally discuss the finished product that we ended up with. Enjoy!
