In comedy, the law is that diametric opposites are inevitably pulled together just because the universe wants to see personalities clash. Hence, in this modern Disney Channel favorite, the ever optimistic Molly drags curmudgeonly Scratch into misadventure after misadventure. Pemmy and James dip their toes into the house that the mouse built for the first time, just in time for Halloween.Because nothing is scarier than Disney lawyers.

Karen Graci is a story editor working on an animated TV show at Disney Television Animation. As the story editor, she's the head of the writing department where she oversees the writers' room, plus she works with the showrunners. In addition to editing, Karen also is actively writing. People often think of "grammar, punctuation, and spelling" when it comes to being an editor, but Karen gets to use her editing skills in such a creative, fun environment. Karen is currently working on an animated comedy-adventure series called "Hailey's On It!" that is out in June 2023 and that she got hired to begin in early 2021. This show is about Hailey, a risk-averse but resourceful teenager, who must finish her long list of challenging (and sometimes impractical) tasks to save the world. She works with incredibly talented and skilled people, such as the showrunners, other writers, animators, and voice actors. One awesome part of her job is that she gets to sit in on the live reads and recordings, meaning that she's there when Auli'i Cravalho (who was Moana!!) voices the main character, Hailey, and Manny Jacinto (who was incredible in The Good Place) voices Scott, the main male character and Hailey's best friend.Karen took an untraditional path to her cool job, including majoring in international relations and touring with Chicago's famed Second City National Touring Company as a professional improviser. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 8 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Opening our show this week, we hear an interview by Olivia Creech who was joined by Dr. Rebecca S. Hall, a curator for the USC Pacific Asia Museum and cultural consultant for Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon. Dr. Hall talks about the winding road she took from Kansas City Art Institute to her PhD program at UCLA in Art History, and how her love of research and textiles flourished and influenced that journey. They delve into Dr. Hall's career as a museum curator and break down the exciting opportunity of working on an animated feature film and what the term “cultural consultant” actually denotes. They conclude the conversation while discussing Hall's favorite exhibition she has curated, “We Are Here: Contemporary Art and Asian Voices in Los Angeles,” and its significance for local Asian communities. Our second segment this week features an interview with Disney Television animation editor, Christopher Gee, by Peter Timberlake. Gee gives great insight into what an animation editor does and what he loves about the creative process of editing. Peter learns about Gee's climb at Disney to eventually work on shows like Kim Possible, Monsters at Work and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and the difference is between an animation and live-action editor. They conclude the interview with a discussion of the challenges and joys of working for a TV animation division of a large company such as Disney, and some practical advice for those interested in the pursuing animation editing.

Tim McNeal starts his day with gratitude. And probably, so do a lot of the staff at Walt Disney Television. Thanks to McNeal, who is vice president, creative talent development and inclusion, there is a more diverse and inclusive writing program and directing program across Walt Disney Television, including Freeform and Disney Channel. McNeal is also instrumental in growing and supporting the National Latino Media Council, and the Hispanic Media Coalition's Latino Television Writers Program. That's just part of the reason he's being inducted into the MediaVillage Advancing Diversity Hall of Honors, at CES on January 8th. Since he joined in 2006, McNeal who came from a creative executive background and worked with diverse creatives, moved from advocacy to activism. As he tells MediaVillage editor, Ginger Conlon and head of strategy, E.B. Moss, "there was a whole population of people out there that already had the skill set that weren't connecting to those opportunities. So I realized that we had an opportunity to identify individuals that were already in the business that weren't connecting with jobs in the entertainment business.. The first thing I did with our talent development programs was shift it from an educational program to a staffing program." Hear how he did that...and so much more to up D&I across Hollywood and beyond... and why it benefits the bottom of media companies and helps the people that media touches.
I fucked up on the audio and a second camera for this podcast, but I HIGHLY recommend you all check this one out, featuring actor John Paul Green. JP (as he goes by) is most widely known for his role as Chuck McCoy in the acclaimed Disney Television show, "Austin & Ally". In this podcast, we dive into how he made the move from Houston to Los Angeles, navigating his way through Hollywood, and what it was like working under the Disney banner. JP is a very intelligent, well-thought out person who I believe added some REAL VALUE to any of those aspiring for a career in the entertainment world. I apologize again for the lack of a second camera and bad audio, but I hope you all Enjoy! Ryan McCoy is a writer first, filmmaker second, entrepreneur third. He has written and produced two feature films, and is beginning to expand out to give talks and share his experience with the next generation of young filmmakers.
