In this episode… What's keep ing you from reaching your goals? Why are you letting that stand in your way? In this episode of An Unconventional Life, Dr. Adi Jaffe and Dr. Russell Strickland blow the doors of your excuses. Dr. Jaffe was an addict, drug dealer, and convicted felon when his doctoral journey began. He went from graduating with his bachelors degree on a technicality, to convincing his master-level professors to go to bat for him when he applied for doctoral studies. Clearly, Dr. Jaffe had all of the excuses one could ever need to not earn his doctor degree and make a positive impact on the world. But, he completely wasted all of these excuses, instead becoming a doctor, an author, interviewing with Larry King, and building an amazing community to support addiction recovery. So, don't worry that you aren't completely comfortable with what you're doing. In fact, Dr. Jaffe said, "I actually urge you to put yourself in more places where you have imposter syndrome." That's how you make a dent in the world!

Today we’re talking about boundaries, which can oftentimes be an uncomfortable topic for those who are a family member of someone who is struggling with addiction. When families come to us for help with a loved one who is struggling, defining and communicating boundaries are not only the most critical pieces to the puzzle but the most difficult to uphold. However, it is crucial that we change the way we behave and break old habits around our boundaries in order for everybody to heal. In today’s episode, we’re discussing the role of boundaries, how to set them, how to protect them, and what to do when these boundaries are challenged. The genesis of this episode all began at a kid’s birthday party — more specifically, my boy, Leo’s, birthday party. With it being a global pandemic and all, we really decided to go all out with his birthday this year with a theme and everything. One of the activities we planned was a scavenger hunt — and I had this epiphany: our life is nothing but a scavenger hunt. Did I lose you there? In this episode, I’m going to prove to you that life is nothing but a scavenger hunt and why knowing this fact will infinitely improve your life. This is F-Shame Month and in today’s episode we are diving into what it looks like to embody this theme. Practicing mindfulness in anything we do, from making coffee to walking, all the way to wanting to make the world a better place. Being present looks like putting your focus on what you’re doing right now with as little judgement as possible. We are exploring how to step away from the overly critical approach in order to show up in empathy. Shame plays a role in all of these fights that we’re having. Letting go of the roles we play, as a result of the way others shame us, frees us up to be able to think about expansion. Whether that looks like focusing on what is making you feel better right now or eventually connecting into something bigger, something that connects us all. Today’s episode of Heroes' Recovery, we’re sharing stories to better understand body image and what determines our perception of beauty. We discuss Bruce Lipton’s Subconscious Belief Work and how this plays into our level of attraction for others and ourselves. We explore honestly, using story and personal experience to encourage radical self-acceptance. We are breaking down how we can shift our perception of what it means to be and feel beautiful. We make it clear that sometimes our perception is based on projections. This episode explores the link between how we look on the outside and how we feel on the inside. If we can shift our focus from physical manifestations to international more emotional manifestations, then we can create sustainable self-improvement. The world feeds us a lot of conditioning and it’s up to us to be able to understand what our perceptions and pre-conceived ideals of beauty are trying to tell us about our internal state. Body image is an issue that comes up a lot with clients and we are breaking down how to reignite your confidence, leading us to all feeling better about the way we look and feel! IGNTD Specials: Free IGNTD Recovery Workshop 14 Days Free of IGNTD Live Online Groups Family SOS Program IGNTD Hero Nohab Program Topics Discussed: [:40] Body image as a prevalent area of struggle. [1:45] The entire concept of attraction is a subjective, created belief. [4:45] Bruce Lipton’s Episode [5:00] More comfortable with physical representations of the world than internal ones. [5:55] Subconscious Belief, based on Bruce Lipton’s work, at the exact same time you can understand that your attraction to a single man or woman doesn’t make sense. And you can tell yourself it’s ridiculous to strive for their level of appearance. But you still think to yourself that you’re not at that level of beauty or appearance. [7:00] Subconscious Beliefs are always guiding our behavior. [9:50] Guiding our behavior Subconsciously through Honest Exploration and Radical Self-Acceptance. [10:30] How do we as children gather our ideas of what is an ideal man or woman. [12:00] Using our personal epitome of our ideal man or woman to understand that our judgements of others mimic the judgements we have against ourselves. [14:30] Emotional connection to another changes our overall attraction to their physical appearance. [16:20] We don’t see ourselves the way others see us. [17:10] Our brains project images back to us. So our perception is inherently subjective, explaining why we start obsessing and seeking out objective measurements of our body image. [18:55] The state of our internal energy shapes the way we are seen and the way we see ourselves. [20:00] Rather than focusing on the material, money, and physical appearance, as a means of finding satisfaction, we ought to focus on the internal. [21:20] Radical Self-Acceptance, you can’t fix what you can’t face. [22:35] How you see yourself is not how others see you. [26:30] When I feel right, I look right – not the other way around. Today we’re talking about porn. Porn was my gateway for learning about sex and ended up shaping my entire perspective around what sex should look like, early on in life. Due to this, I developed a rather unhealthy relationship with porn and often fell back on it to avoid the risks of intimacy. It took me a long time to recognize the major role it played in my relationships. In this episode (and in episodes to come), I want to have a conversation around pornography addiction, sex addiction, and chronic infidelity under the umbrella of: “Is sex addiction a real addiction?” Today we’re focusing on porn. We’ll be taking a look at the role that porn plays in all of our lives, how a reliance on porn can impact you, what my relationship with porn has looked like throughout my life and how it has impacted me, and some guidance on where you can begin this conversation around porn with yourself and your partner. What we know as ‘recreational drugs’ are being utilized more and more in a clinical setting. Having recently spent three days in absolute silence, I ended up reading a lot of books. One of which was The Art of Happiness, by the Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler, M.D. In the book, the Dalai Lama shares how, ultimately, we all have the same goal: the pursuit of happiness. And though it may sound really simple to achieve happiness… it can get complicated, fast. In today’s episode, I want to focus in on a specific part of the conversation around happiness, and that is this blurred line between happiness vs. pleasure. A lot of people confuse the two, and oftentimes, end up sacrificing their long-term happiness for their short-term pleasure — especially in relation to addiction. In this episode, I’m breaking down the key components that you need to know regarding happiness vs. pleasure and how you can trick your brain into focusing on long-term happiness rather than short-term pleasure. In this week’s episode, I really want to talk to you all about this silent retreat that I just came back from. It was three days of pure silence, which means no talking whatsoever. And as someone who talks for a living, to say I was nervous going into it is an understatement. I was almost ready to throw in the towel before I even started. But it’s these difficult experiences — the ones that push you to your edges — that you benefit the most from. And after the three days were over, it ended up being one of the best things I have done for myself — and in this episode, I’m going to share why. As many of you know, I run an online program focused on addiction and mental health called the IGNTD Hero Nohab Program. Within this program, we have about 9 or 10 groups that we run, two of which I run every Tuesday and Friday. During my Tuesday session, I always kick it off with a sort of ‘rant,’ where I focus on a specific topic or lesson. So for today’s episode, I’m going to let you in on one of these sessions entirely for free and let you be a sort of fly-on-the-wall for one of these group-only meetings! Whether or not you’re struggling with addiction or mental health, today’s conversation is an incredibly important one in terms of regulating your day-to-day functioning. I discuss the habits and rituals that have changed my life over the last decade and how you can apply them to your own life to make some seriously powerful changes. In today’s episode, I’m going to be unpacking a bit of a complicated topic. Recently, I watched the movie 13th, which shares the idea that incarceration is the new segregation and that laws are written purposefully to keep black people marginalized — and essentially, enslaved. The place I really want to look at in regard to all of this is the addiction problem in marginalized groups and how it often ends up leading to incarceration. There are some powers at play that do not have everybody’s interests in mind, and over time, can create these huge scaled effects that are unfair. I hope you’ll join me in taking a look at this important topic. [2:35] The disparity when it comes to the possession of drugs. [5:48] How this disparity heavily impacted black communities. [7:25] Why this massive impact created a cycle that continued for decades in black communities. [8:46] Where the rubber meets the road with the huge discrepancies in imprisonment. [9:18] The issue I have with people focusing on racial profiling. [11:04] Here’s what we’re going to have to figure out. [13:03] What we have to do, regardless of how we got here. Currently, we’re wrapping our Family SOS Program — the first program we have ever run for the family members of those struggling with addiction. I can honestly say it has been one of the most incredible and enlightening experiences I have ever had and I cannot wait for this program to be more widely available in the future. Through working exclusively with the families of those who struggle, I learned some important lessons that I really want to share with all of you today. Often, we only have the perspective as either the person who is struggling or of the family member of someone who is struggling. Whichever side you may be on, I highly recommend you tune in to today’s episode so you can better understand how to bridge the gap. It is so incredibly important that we understand both sides of the coin so we can all heal and grow together. Today, I want to talk about what it means to listen to and support a loved one. Often times, we are quick to judge someone’s story based on our own perceptions and ideas of reality. We “listen” without actually listening with a clear heart. We have our own ideas of what they should do or how they should behave. This judgment can lead to both parties feeling misunderstood and alone. Over the last 12 years that I’ve been working in the field of addiction recovery, I’ve seen hundreds of family members who want to help their struggling loved one, only to be at a loss for how to get through to them. In today’s episode, I’m explaining how to create an environment that builds trust and safety so that your loved one has the chance to open up. We’ll also dive into listening with intention and openness so that you and your family members feel heard. If this resonates with you, I highly encourage you to look into our new program, Family SOS, so that you and your family can get the help that you deserve. Today, I want to talk about family with you all… but not in the way that we normally talk about it. But rather, I want to talk directly to those of you who have someone close to you in your life who is struggling with addiction. Over the last 12 years that I’ve been working in the field of addiction recovery, I would say that at least half — if not more — of the questions I get asked are not from the people who are struggling with addiction but are actually from the family members of the person who is struggling. They want to help them, but they don’t know how. And I empathize completely with this difficulty. So in today’s episode, I want to address the family. If you are in this position or know somebody who is in this position, I highly recommend you tune in for this episode. As I sat down to record this episode on Sophie’s birthday, April 30th, the word ‘gratitude’ kept coming up for me. So that’s what we’re going to be focusing on today: this concept of gratitude. My story didn’t start out with a house with a backyard and a wife and kids who love me. I’m grateful every day that this is my reality now. In the past, I was not only self-centered, but I always used to look for what was going wrong in my life too. Weirdly, it wasn’t until I nearly lost everything in my life that things changed for me, and I began to appreciate the small things. If you have the sense that where you are now isn’t where you need to be… this episode is for you. In this episode I deliver quite a rant - on conspiracy theories, Corona (COVID-19) mania and more... Why is it that in times of crisis some of us rely on the least accepted and barely coherent message? So many of us have lots our anchors in the world and any sense of normalcy. This loss can lead people to grasp onto any solid concept that fits their previous beliefs without looking at sources or the truth. There are tons of conspiracy theories circulating about COVID-19, where it started, why it’s here, who’s in charge…the list goes on! There are two types of addicts that most people think of: the “trainwreck” who is not seeking help and the one who is seeking help, going to AA meetings or rehab. The reason many people only see these two sides is because that’s all that the media tends to cover. My special guest today, Alexis Haines, is here to talk about all of the people who fall in the middle — because, in reality, very few people fit into those two camps. And Alexis is not ashamed to share her story — what recovery from reality actually looks like. And she has been through a lot; from being a 19-year-old heroin addict who was fighting criminal charges to someone who is now 9 years sober and owns her own treatment center and hosts a successful recovery podcast. Alexis truly has so many incredible insights, lessons, and advice to share from her experiences and the journey that she’s been through! I hope you’ll all tune in to hear what she has to say on recovery, addiction, and healing. “I knew that I was okay going forward when I stopped spending every single day trying to check out of my reality, but instead, trying to check in to my reality.” — Alexis Haines IGNTD Specials: Free IGNTD Recovery Workshop 14 Days Free of IGNTD Live Online Groups The Abstinence Myth, Dr. Adi Jaffe — Get the book free! One of the things I try to do on this podcast is present you with completely different approaches to recovery and improvement of mental health. So, just like last week, I'm inviting on another guest to share their thoughts and insights on the topic! Matt Simpson is an author, speaker, and transformational coach. His 2019 book, Worth The Fight: Acting for a Better World, A Guide to Spirituality, Psychedelic Medicines, and Overcoming Trauma, provides invaluable insights and tools to overcome trauma and up-level your game. He also does some amazing, amazing work with veterans through plant medicine work where he focuses on inner work. In this episode, Matt and I have a very frank conversation and we discuss several topics on the themes of healing through hallucinogens, facing your shadows, early life trauma vs. stereotypical masculine programming, the trauma that veterans face, and how to find what works for you in your own journey of healing. My hope for this podcast is to bring you new ways of thinking about recovery that you may have never heard about before… and I know this episode with Matt hits that mark! What did this healing work help him address? And how did it ultimately lead him to this collective veteran soul-healing mission? [12:40] How hallucinogens can help us face our shadows — which is where these profound lessons and growth are found. [13:41] How people get stuck in a life that they hate. [16:20] How these drugs can help us acknowledge and recognize our struggles (i.e. face our shadows) instead of hiding or running away from them. [19:04] Matt speaks about what is possible with this veteran collective soul-healing mission. He also speaks about the trauma that many veterans face. [21:00] Why Matt is hopeful for the future. This week on the podcast we have a special interview episode with Holly Whitaker! Holly is doing great things in this world in the space of addiction recovery. She started a movement called Hip Sobriety (now rebranded as Tempest) that leads others through a modern, accessible, and empowering approach to recovery that is built around the individual. Holly knows that there is not a one-size-fits-all path to recovery and through her work, she exposes those she helps to a wide range of tools, teachings, and practices pulled from many different schools of thought. Holly and I have a very candid, open conversation in today’s episode and I think you’ll really love it! We get into her own story of addiction and recovery, how she created her system to help others, and why she believes it is so vitally important to expand the scope of what addiction looks like and make it more accessible for others to find the help that they need. Throughout the podcast, Holly also shares many incredible resources, tools, and actionable steps that you can start utilizing today! Can you remember what it was like being a kid and having a pretty limited set of worries? Now, I can barely remember a time at all like that existing for me. Life is full from the moment I wake up to the moment I fall asleep now. And suddenly everything is catching up for me and I’m exhausted. Have you ever been here? If you’re anything like me, you’ve only realized how busy and overwhelmed you are when it’s already too late and you’re ready to collapse from exhaustion. So that’s what I want to focus on today: the lessons I’ve learned from reaching this point of exhaustion and overwhelm, the things I have put in place to counteract it, and the system I use currently to prevent myself from tipping that scale. I’m going to help you identify when you’re heading towards this place of overwhelm, help you put tools in place so you know what to do when you’re there, and provide some proactive steps you can to take to make it doesn’t happen to you again. I remember being the kind of person who would always look for the pieces that other people needed to provide me so that I could succeed in life. I would always look outside of myself for reasons why I wasn’t getting further ahead. But the thing is, we make our reality. We create it. And waiting for the right circumstances is not going to help you create the life you want to live. So in today’s episode, we’re going to be looking at why you shouldn’t wait on anybody else to make your life better — and instead, what you can do to live the life you want. 20 years ago I used to put almost all of my effort into looking at what wasn’t working in my life. I would always focus on the pain and the things that I couldn’t do. From this description alone, most people would consider me a “glass-half-empty” kind of guy. But the thing is: that’s not at all true. I didn’t look at the glass as half empty — I just saw empty. The whole question of, “Are you a glass-half-full or a glass-half-empty person?” already sets us up for the wrong answer, and in turn, the wrong way to look at life. So, in today’s episode, I’m going to break down every aspect of this analogy, explain why it doesn’t work, and share how you can begin to fill up your glass with liquid — even to the point where it overflows! If this is something that you struggle with, I hope you’ll tune in to hear how you can fill up your glass and the secret sauce to truly shifting your perspective! IGNTD Specials: Free IGNTD Recovery Workshop New IGNTD Recovery Live Online Support Groups IGNTD.com/Secret Topics Discussed: [:35] About today’s special episode. [4:03] Here’s the thing: you can only focus on one thing at a time. So you’re either looking at your glass empty or full. [5:08] Taking a deep dive into the needs and motivations of what it is that allows us to analyze how our life is going by breaking the glass analogy up into three parts. [6:00] The glass: the three major factors that you need to feel comfortable about to allow your glass to even hold liquid. [8:10] The liquid in our glass: what it is made up of and how we can get more of it. [10:43] The secret sauce: the flavor and richness of the liquid of our glass and how it is determined. [14:52] If we want our lives to be filled with joy, fulfillment, and impact, then the whole ‘glass-half-full or glass-half-empty’ is the wrong way to look at things. Today we’re talking about trauma. The concept of trauma and the discussions around it have definitely become more and more commonplace. As a society, we’re becoming much more comfortable talking about it in general. But, I think there’s still a nuance that we’re missing. When others talk about trauma, we tend to compare our trauma to theirs. We might even think that our trauma wasn’t significant enough because it wasn’t as bad as someone else’s. So, in today’s episode, I want to talk about this notion around trauma and break down the idea of personal perspective in the context of trauma, the subjective impact that each one of us has, and how that affects you in the present moment. I’ll also be providing a bit of an exercise at the end of the podcast to help you resolve these issues related to the impact your trauma has on you. I don’t know about you, but I have this thing that happens in my head all the time that tells me that I’m never doing enough or that my efforts are not paying off — and it’s pretty consistent and constant! I could work for 12 hours and then as soon as I watch 30 minutes of TV my brain is screaming at me: ‘You’re being lazy! What are you doing?!’ I used to think the answer to solving this was just to work harder. So instead of getting up at 6 a.m. I would get up at 5 a.m. and work until 9 p.m., and I thought that would fix it. But the answer isn’t to work harder — it’s to face the monster head-on. So in today’s episode, I’m going to be breaking down how to deal with your own monsters. You may be running away from alcohol, porn, food, drugs — whatever it may be — here’s how to kill these monsters for good. IGNTD Specials: IGNTD Recovery (Register and join the free workshop!) Today I have a guest on for our Friday show! We’ve had Shannon Algeo on our IGNTD Relationships podcast before to discuss embracing change and living your life’s purpose, but in today’s episode, we’re going to be looking at finding your purpose after addiction. Shannon is a meditation teacher, a life coach, a motivational speaker, and runs the podcast, Soulfeed, with his co-host, Alex Kip. A lot of his work revolves around helping others discover their purpose and helping others to heal their old patterns of trauma so they can show up powerfully in the world. As we talk about in today’s episode, quitting can actually be the easy part. Living life in a way that maintains your new way of living after addiction, in reality, is the hardest part. But the good news is: we have the solution. Discovering your life’s purpose brings that meaning to your life that is so key in maintaining your new lifestyle after addiction. So if you or someone you know is struggling with life after addiction, this is a not-to-miss episode to learn all about the purpose of purpose! Today’s topic is coming to you from a moment of realization I had recently at one of the restaurants we like to go to in the Dominican Republic where we’re currently vacationing. The song, “Time,” by Pink Floyd was being played by a local band and it reminded me of one of the common conversations that I have with so many of the people that I work with. And that is, that they’ve missed the boat. ‘The starting gun’ had gone off, as it says in the Pink Floyd song, and now they feel it’s too late. The truth to this song is that nobody tells you when to start. And for some of us, we’ve never really truly gotten started. And at that point, you have two choices: you can get really freaked out and anxious, or, you can simply start now. IGNTD Specials: IGNTD Recovery (Register and join the free workshop!) TheAbstinenceMyth.com (Pay for shipping and I will send you the book for free!) Topics Discussed: [:43] About the inspiration for today’s episode. [3:22] The truth in the Pink Floyd song, “Time”: nobody tells you when to start. [4:40] What you can do about this now that you’ve realized you missed the ‘starting gun.’ [5:54] Life is not a race and you are not too late to fire off your own starting gun! [7:53] The moment you realize there are things you want to do… that’s the moment you get to start doing those things! [8:38] The reason why late-in-life success stories are told. [9:31] The one difference in perspective I have with Pink Floyd in the song, “Time.” [10:44] Thanks for tuning in! I hope you enjoyed today’s episode! Today’s special episode features a recording from our ‘Trauma Panel’ at our recent IGNTD Glow Event! Trauma is often a huge part of our experiences but we don’t usually want to talk about it — in fact, most of us hide it. But on this panel, you’ll be hearing from three incredible women who are definitely not hiding it! Rachelle Tratt, Aarona Lea, and Brittany Piper tackle this topic of trauma so elegantly and show all of us that healing is not linear; we all do it at our own pace and in our own way — and that’s OK. I hope you’ll all tune in to hear what these three amazing women have to say as they share their personal struggles with trauma, the tools and methods they’ve used to help themselves overcome it, and what they’re still doing to this day to continue on their journeys! Today we’re talking about stress. We all have it… but did you know that chronic stress could be killing you slowly? Always comparing yourself to others and constantly striving for perfection can place a huge amount of stress on you and in-turn, massively impact your health in a negative way. So, in this episode, I’m going to be shedding some light on the negative impacts of stress in the long-term. I’ll be covering the biological, the psychological, and the social implications of stress; as well as how we can better manage it through setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and finding a healthy balance! Today I’m going to talk about something kind of personal. And the reason this topic is coming up today because we get this question a ton, and that is: ‘Are you a doctor?’ And it’s sort of a lot more of a convoluted answer than anyone would really expect. So in this episode, I’m addressing this question! And I hope, once and for all, this clarifies the specifics of how I got to be in this weird little place as Dr. Adi Jaffe — not the M.D. version; the Ph.D. version — who’s not a licensed psychologist, but works with people and coaches them to deal with their relationships, mental health, addictions, and struggles. I see the same story with families all the time where they’ve spent hundreds of thousands on various addiction treatments and nothing is working. Frankly, these traditional methods are failing us. They just don’t work for most people. In today’s episode, I’m going to show you and tell you why it is that so many of these traditional solutions fail and I’m going to break it down into three primary elements as to why this is. I also speak about the incredible transformation these families go through after they come to me as a last resort. When they completely change the ideas that they had about the nature of the addiction and how they could help support their loved one in moving forward, all of their lives changed for the better! If you are a loved one of somebody who is struggling, you are going to want to listen for sure! IGNTD Specials: IGNTD Recovery (Register and join the free workshop!) TheAbstinenceMyth.com (Pay for shipping and I will send you the book for free!) IGNTD Family SOS Workshop Topics Discussed: [:35] An introduction to today’s episode. [5:52] The path families are generally led down when a family member has an addiction. [6:54] What this episode is about. [7:09] If you know someone who is struggling with addiction, please send this to their family! [7:30] The first of the three primary elements that I’m breaking this episode down by — addiction is not what you’ve been told it is. [9:20] The second element — the moral concept. The idea that addicts are bad, liars, narcissistic, and that their brains are damaged so, therefore, they can’t make morally justified decisions. [12:32] An important piece to the moral concept — spirituality and the fact that addiction is never one thing. There are four factors that play into it: biology, psychology, environmental, and spirituality. [14:16] The last element — telling somebody that they’re broken and defective and then expecting them to get better. [16:30] Why your loved one ended up where they are and why they are not broken. [17:09] A study that helps illustrate these concepts. [19:00] Sharing a couple of the families’ stories that I’ve worked with and explaining how we can help people change and not force them. Today I’m here to give you a download of our recent IGNTD GLOW Annual Event that was held from October 18th-20th! The event was incredible and ended up being a truly magical weekend. We had so many special guests that have been on the podcast with us — Shaman Durek, Alexandra Roxo, Bizzie Gold, Rachelle Tratt, and so many more. One of the most incredible parts about the weekend, however, was the many people that came up to us and shared the incredible transformations that they went through and the lessons that they learned. People even told us that they had better conversations than they’ve had in years on the drive home from the event! So, in today’s episode, I really want to share with you some of the key points from my talks at the IGNTD GLOW Annual Event, the lessons that were shared with us, and the lessons I then learned in-turn. I hope you’ll join me! Topics Discussed: [:41] About today’s episode. [1:45] I would’ve never, in a million years, believed 20 years ago that I would be leading a transformational weekend for other people… and here’s why. In today’s episode, I’m bringing you something a little new — a recording from one of our live sessions for our IGNTD VIP members! This particular recording and conversation are focusing on the concept of credibility and what makes us credible by breaking it down into three pieces: where we get our concept of what is credible vs. what isn’t, what happens when we step into that place and the concept of imposter syndrome, and through understanding these pieces, how we can shape the life that you want. This episode is especially beneficial for anybody who’s been struggling with the problem of not really knowing what they want out of life. These three basic principles — credibility, the imposter syndrome, and the work of creating the life that you want — are key in understanding how to get where you’re trying to go, despite the programming you’ve had earlier on in life. Topics Discussed: [:35] About today’s episode. [2:32] The start of the recording from my live session for our IGNTD VIP members. [4:00] Why our chase for credibility is often one of the main reasons why we end up getting to outcomes and figuring out that maybe they weren’t the ones we were going after, after all. [4:52] Where we get our concept of what is credible vs. what isn’t. [8:34] My experience with imposter syndrome and how it relates to our concept of credibility. [11:18] How do we create the life that we want in the face of all these challenges (such as imposter syndrome and our ideas of credibility and what we want are largely influenced by our past?) [13:17] My homework for you: find the life that you want. [16:21] This took me 10 years to figure out! My hope for you is that by just listening to this episode, I’ve created a shortcut for you to get there sooner than I did. I was inspired to do today’s episode following a conversation I had with a client of mine — we’ll call him Michael. Michael was telling me this story of what had happened to him just this past week. He and his girlfriend were visiting his mother and they got into a huge fight. As we began to put the story back together, we realized that they always got into arguments leading up to these visits with his mother. As we discovered, a lot of what had to do with these consistent arguments were around the relationship that he currently had with his mother. His mother was actually a trigger for him. Triggers are all around us and a lot of us have them! So if you’ve ever been weirded out or upset by a conversation you’ve had with your mom, your sister, an ex, or your husband or wife, and you’ve been unsure of why then this episode is for you. Topics Discussed: [:53] About today’s episode. [1:16] What inspired this episode: a conversation I had with a client. [6:05] Here’s what I want you to take away from today’s episode. Adi Jaffe, Ph.D. is a nationally recognized expert on mental health, addiction, relationships and shame. He was a UCLA lecturer in the Psychology department at UCLA for the better part of a decade and was the Executive-Director and Co-Founder of one of the most progressive mental health treatment facilities in the country - until he started IGNTD. Dr. Jaffe's work and research focus on changing the way Americans think about, and deal with mental health issues. He is passionate about the role of shame in destroying lives and aims to greatly reduce the stigma of mental health in this country. In this context, Dr. Jaffe has used his personal experience as an incredibly effective inspirational and motivational tool. Dr. Jaffe attended UCLA, graduating with a B.A. in psychology. It was during his undergraduate career that Adi began struggling with drug issues himself, eventually leading to a 4 year hiatus from studies and into the Los Angeles drug-dealing world where he became quite successful. During that period of his life, Adi's days looked more like a re-enactment of a beatnik novel or a Quentin Tarantino film than the life of an upper-middle class suburban kid. Following a SWAT team arrest in his apartment, and extended court case and a year-long jail sentence, Adi began rebuilding his life. Today, we’re talking about co-dependency. In my field of work, co-dependency shows up a lot. I have this client, whom we’ll call Melissa (though that is not her real name), who was really struggling and by the time she came to me, she was diagnosed with six different clinical diagnoses. And her mom was someone that many would consider overbearing or a co-dependent. Whenever Melissa would come into my clinic to visit me, her mother would bombard her with constant calls, updates, and emails. But, the thing is, I don’t think Melissa’s mom was ‘a co-dependent’; I think she was acting co-dependently. Whether this is semantic to you or you have been that family member who has been called co-dependent, I highly recommend that you stay tuned in for this one as we dive deeper into what it means to be co-dependent, why these behavioral patterns exist at all, and how we can help others to overcome and move past this co-dependent behaviors and mindset. Topics Discussed: [:42] About today’s topic: co-dependency, and a story about a client of mine. [2:35] More about this term, ‘co-dependent.’ [3:22] My perspective on Melissa’s ‘co-dependent’ mom. [3:51] The three components I’m going to break down in this episode (on co-dependency): what does it even mean to say somebody is co-dependent? Why do these behavioral patterns exist? And how do we help others overcome and get past these co-dependent behaviors? [4:10] How co-dependency is defined and how it first came about. [9:40] Why do these co-dependency behavioral patterns exist? [13:24] How we “cured” Melissa’s mom of her co-dependent behaviors, and why it is incredibly important that we keep it sub-clinical rather than a full-on, clinical disorder. [15:55] How do we measure dysfunction in a couple or a pair of people where this co-dependent pattern of behavior works well for them? [17:04] In Melissa’s and her mother’s story, did co-dependency actually end up serving them? [18:49] What is important to know if you’re struggling or you know someone who is struggling. As recovery month is coming to a close, I wanted to focus this episode around the theme and topic of my upcoming workshop, “Are You Really an Alcoholic? And What to do About It” and give those of you who are interested or thinking about joining, a small glimpse into the kind of conversation we’re going to be having. We’ll be taking a look at the origin of the terms ‘alcoholic’ and ‘addict,’ how the power of belief changes the way you think (and how others around you think about you) from the definitions of these terms, what happens when we stick to the existing beliefs around these labels and ignore our individual differences, and of course, how we can begin to break free from these labels and find our own path to recovery. Topics Discussed: [:46] About my upcoming workshop, “Are You Really an Alcoholic? And What to do About It” [1:30] Why I decided to do this workshop (and episode). Today I’m here to talk with you all about what recovery really looks like when you do it well. If you’ve been listening to the podcast long enough, you all know my stance on recovery and that it’s is not really about abstaining, but instead about creating a different reality for yourself and changing the circumstances of your life. But what does it look like to recover? And to do it well? Today I’m going to be presenting the topic of what recover looks like and how to improve your life through the lens of what it is that we did to create the IGNTD Glow Event. This event will help not only those in recovery but anyone in their life journey, in figuring out how to become a better person and continuously improve upon yourself. We found, through setting up this event, that these four major categories are the most critical in allowing people to be their best selves: movement, mindfulness, inspiration, and education. Through these four areas, you can become more than you are right now. Tune in to this episode to learn more about what real recovery looks like, about this transformational event, and what you can do to better yourself with a supportive community! This week I’m here for a really simple — yet, important — topic. This is something that I deal with, with many of my clients — and that is, making the decision to focus on the positive. When I was at my lowest point, I considered myself a realist. I was proud of the fact that I saw things exactly as they were. And for me, at the time, that meant a pretty strong existential crisis. My whole world was focused on these dark topics with depressing themes, which I considered at the time to be a very realistic way to view the world. Here’s the thing: I now know that what I considered a realistic and objective view of the world was not necessarily A) as valuable as I thought it was, and B) as honest and objective as I thought it was. So that’s what I really want to talk about with you all today: making the decision of where you put your focus on. Life will always have both positive and negative aspects, so where you put your focus makes all the difference. Topics Discussed: [:01] About upcoming IGNTD events and offerings for September’s recovery month! [1:10] About this week’s episode. [1:48] My past struggle with being a ‘realist’; not focusing on the positive. [3:55] Here’s the thing: my past view of the world was not as realistic as I thought it was. [4:18] The problem with our search for objectivity and truth. [9:50] An important exercise for you all to begin focusing on the positives. [10:40] Life has both aspects: the positives and the negatives. Here’s what we have to get good at: making the decision to focus on the positive. [11:38] Here’s what happens when you begin working on this exercise. [12:01] The qualities of a person who focuses on the positive. [12:39] My question for you: what is it you want? Do you want to be right? Or do you want to be happy? [13:31] How focusing on the positive has helped me in my own life. With this month’s theme being recovery — and not just in the IGNTD space, but nationally — I thought it would be the perfect time to continue the conversation about recovery and what it means to recover. The official government definition of recovery reads, “A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” And what I think is so critically important with this definition is that it does not mention abstinence at all. For a lot of people, recovery tends to be synonymous with abstinence and 100% sobriety, when it really should be the process of simply improving your life. It is really incredibly powerful what can happen when someone enters recovery, so this week, I’m going to talk about three ways that I see recovery as being very different from this stereotypical ‘abstinence definition’ many people assign to it. I hope you’ll join me in increasing awareness around the stigma of mental health and substance use! [3:18] A recent experience I had on a recovery podcast who did not share my same stance with. [5:23] SAMHSA’s official definition of recovery. [7:05] What I’m going to be covering today: the three areas in our life that recovery center around (physical, mental, and emotional). [8:11] Starting with the physical aspect of recovery, I speak about what my health was like physically during peak addiction and how it has changed in recovery. [12:11] A story of a woman I saw when I first had my old treatment center and how she changed, physically, in recovery. [13:55] The mental shifts people experience in recovery and my own personal experience with how my mind and perspective changed. Continuing with the ‘framily’ theme we’ve had going with this month, I’m going to talk about the way that ‘it’ applies to recovery and mental health struggles. None of the stuff I was able to do would’ve been possible at all without the support of my family; I wouldn’t be where I am right now. My parents supported me in my arrest, helped pay for my lawyer, supported me during the trial, came to see me in jail, helped me financially after I got out of jail, and then helped pay for my schooling. Through that support, I was able to get where I am today. They seriously had my back through those years. Family support, all-in-all, is a hugely important factor in recovering and I think it’s underappreciated. So today, I’m going to break down why family (and ‘framily’) is such an important piece to the recovery equation by taking a look at the three factors that I think it affects the most: biology, psychology, and environment. Topics Discussed: [:41] About today’s episode. [4:30] The importance of ‘framily’ support in recovery and why it really matters. [5:16] Breaking down ‘framily,’ starting by taking a look at how it affects biology. [10:18] Breaking down the second piece that ‘framily’ affects the most: psychology. [14:57] Why the environment you grew up in matters; breaking down the third factor that ‘framily’ affects the most. [17:59] Why this topic is particularly important with regard to recovery. [19:05] Here’s the great thing about all this: we get to make a choice about changing these things, and this is what we can do to change it. [20:40] Please share this episode with somebody that you know is struggling and needs to understand why that’s happening. Today is a bit of a special episode; we have a guest joining us! Sherry Gaba is a Holistic Psychotherapist and Life Coach. One of Sherry’s specialties is working with couples and relationships that are struggling around sex addiction. She was even on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew! She has also written a couple of books and has really been challenging the way people think about addiction. So today, please take a seat back, open up your mind, and listen in to what Sherry has to bring to the equation. We had a super interesting conversation and I’m excited for you all to tune in and learn about Sherry’s perspective on mental health, addiction, and recovery! Today we’re going through clearing space. Right now, in the IGNTD household, we’re super busy with being in the process of buying our first house. As exciting as it is, I had no idea what kinds of challenges it would bring along! And here’s the thing about life: we’re constantly recycling and re-figuring out what we have to do to keep our head up above the water. So today, I want to talk with you about how to clear out space in your life! Because, if you make the tough decisions and clear out the things in your life that are causing the most stress, pressure, and noise in your life, you will be making space for new, incredible opportunities. Topics Discussed: [:43] What we’re currently up to at the IGNTD household! [2:27] What I’m going to break down for you today. [4:25] What happens when you first clear out your space. [7:14] How we cleared out space recently. [9:00] Why you haven’t had the time to clear out your space, how to make the time, and the benefits I have received from clearing my space. [11:00] Why clearing your space is so valuable. [12:05] My question for you: How much of what’s going on in your life is happening because you’re not clearing your space? [12:51] My exercise for you: Write down all of the things that are creating the most stress, pressure, and noise in your life right now. When you’re done with that list, you have your mission. Figure out how much you can clear and how much space you can create so you can grow in your life and get to a new and better place! In this episode, we’re talking all about self-doubt. For most of my life, I’ve been saddled with self-doubt. There was always this voice in the back of my head making sure I knew I wasn’t enough in whatever I was doing. For years, it played as constant noise in the background of my life. But, over the past 15 years or so, I’ve made an incredible realization: you shouldn’t actually be running away from this voice at all. And in order to enjoy your life to the fullest, you have to respect and acknowledge this voice — or as some people call it, ‘your shadow.’ So today, we’ll be looking at what the concept of ‘shadow’ is, what light is, and how I use shadow to have more light. Topics Discussed: [:44] About today’s topic of discussion. [3:07] What is the shadow? [7:22] What light is and why we have trouble sharing it with others. [8:59] What I propose: let’s use our shadow to ignite our light. [10:18] What I learned about shadows and light. [13:04] Why you should not hide your shadow and instead use your shadow to fuel your light. [15:29] What life is like being able to live with your shadow and light in harmony. [16:24] What will happen for you when you start going through this process yourself. Today we’re continuing the conversation about toxic masculinity from a few weeks back with the episode, “Changing Our Perspective of Masculinity.” Everybody looks for the most obvious examples of toxic masculinity — such as the Harvey Weinsteins, the Donald Trumps, and the Jeffrey Epsteins of the world. But I see toxic masculinity as a manifestation of a much deeper issue. And today I’m going to dig into it by revisiting what we discussed last time (the typical male roles as we define them by our culture); what happens to the 95% of men who just don’t match up to those ideals; and lastly, what the consequences are when you don’t match up to these ideals. Topics Discussed: [:42] About today’s episode. [:55] Reflecting on masculinity in junior high. [4:02] What I’m going to be covering in today’s episode regarding toxic masculinity. [4:49] What is the ideal male role? And what are the damaging consequences of trying to fit (or actively not fit) into the “ideal” male role? [14:40] Summarizing the key lessons of today’s episode. [15:40] Using Harvey Weinstein as an example of what it means to try and fit into this “ideal” male role. [17:50] So where is the guy now that was the alpha male in junior high? [19:08] The major takeaway of today’s episode on toxic masculinity. [20:03] If this episode resonated with you, share it around, tag us, and let us know what you think! I had a pretty good childhood — my parents stayed together, we went on a lot of family vacations, and we had birthday celebrations. But, it was also not entirely perfect — my parents fought a lot when I was younger, my dad was almost always gone, and there was cheating. And now, as a parent, I worry about the sort of impression I’m leaving on my own children and how it may affect them in the future. How do I make sure that when my kids look back on their childhood, they have memories that make them feel good, happy, and secure even in the face of future challenges? So, today we’re going to be taking a look at this question from a few different angles: your everyday life, how to do it when your kids are challenging, and how to do it when you make mistakes. And be sure to tune into this episode even if you don’t have kids — these concepts apply to all relationships! Topics Discussed: [:42] Reflecting on the good and the bad aspects of my childhood and how it affects me today. [4:07] How do we, as parents, make sure that when our kids look back on their childhood, they have memories that make them feel good, happy, and secure even in the face of the many challenges they will face? [6:06] The three aspects we should consider when we think about how to accomplish this goal: your everyday life, how to do it when your kids are challenging, and how to do it when you make mistakes. [6:51] How everyday life and day-to-day activities play a huge role in your child’s lasting memory of you as well as to reinforce what your relationship will be like in the future. [11:15] What should you do when your child acts out or the relationship becomes challenging? [16:13] What to do when you make mistakes in the relationship with your children? [19:09] So, in summary, how do I create a childhood for my kids that they’re going to remember as being good? [20:38] The most important takeaway from today’s episode: We all can get a little too wrapped up in our own lives to realize the impact that our actions have on other people. So what I want you to do today is to take a moment to consider the potential future implications of some of your own actions and behavior patterns. Today I’m here to talk about a topic that came out of a client session I had about a year ago. In this session, my client was really struggling about what to do next. He was faced with the knowledge that as he continued doing the work he needed to do, he further understood the gap in his knowledge. Think of the Aristotle quote: “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.” For some people, this concept can be really scary! I believe that this fear actually stems from another common saying that goes: “Ignorance is bliss.” The idea is that if you don’t know what you don’t know, you will be happy. But I think that that is completely backward. To me, the idea that knowledge is a bottomless pit represents ultimate freedom in life! So, what I want to do today is to present three points to you about the way this concept relates to life, how it relates to mental health and recovery, and the way it relates to the relationships that you have — and ultimately, explain why ignorance is NOT bliss. Topics Discussed: [:40] About today’s episode. [4:54] How this concept relates to life. [7:30] Where we tend to develop a fear of knowledge, supported by the phrase, “Ignorance is bliss.” [7:50] Why ignorance is NOT bliss. [10:48] How this concept relates to mental health and recovery. [13:35] How this concept relates to our relationships in life. [15:36] How radical transparency can fix everything (with regards to this relationship portion). [16:30] Summarizing the key takeaways for this week’s episode. [20:38] Be sure to screenshot this podcast, DM me or share it on social media, and let me know what resonated the most with you in this episode! Buckle up because we’ve got a serious topic to cover today. Today we’ll be talking all about this concept of connection vs. isolation. They’re these two different sides to this battle we fight in how we deal with our problems, how we treat others, and what our relationships end up being like. When I was younger I was extremely jaded. I felt like almost nothing in the world mattered -- period. I felt like everything was always going to get screwed up, nothing was ever going to work out, and therefore there was no purpose to any of it. This was such an isolated way of looking at the world. And I wasn’t the only one who thought this way. Many of us tend to think that isolating is an easier solution. But the problem is this: when we all isolate, we all suffer. And because we’re all isolated, we’re all constantly wearing these masks so that other people think we’re okay. But the good news is that there’s a flip-side to all of this: we can find connection through practicing radical transparency. And in this episode, I’ll be walking you through my own journey with this, how you can begin approaching this transition in your life, and what to expect. Join me in challenging your beliefs and in taking this next step in nurturing yourself and your relationships! Topics Discussed: [:40] About today’s episode — connection vs. isolation — and my own experience with it. [7:16] The problem with isolation. [12:12] The flip-side of isolation: connection through practicing radical transparency. [16:00] What to look forward to on the other side of being radically transparent. [18:00] What I traded my isolation in for — a completely open, communicative, and interdependent way of living where I’m part of a community. [20:22] My challenge for you all this week. Ask yourself these questions and take action: In what areas of your life are you not being the most honest and transparent that you could be? And how is that affecting you? What if you started allowing more transparency into your life? And how can you get closer to radical transparency in every area of your life? Today we’re talking all about travel! Sophie and I just recently came back from a really long family vacation to Israel, which we do once a year, every year. What was unique about this trip, though, was that it was actually the longest trip we’ve ever taken together as a family! And it was completely amazing. So in this episode, I really want to speak with you all about the value of travel. Yes, it can be expensive, but it is also incredibly valuable. In fact, it can provide you with the three things we all want most in life: joy, connection, and impact. And being able to travel with your family — if done with the right intention and thought — can actually provide these fairly easily. Tune in to find how travel delivers joy, connection, and impact; and how to get the most out of it all! Topics Discussed: [:42] About today’s episode on travel. [2:32] The value of travel and what it can potentially deliver to you. [2:55] How travel delivers joy and how to get the most out of it! [7:50] How travel delivers connection and how to nurture that. [10:24] How traveling literally expands your mind! [11:40] Summarizing why travel is the cure-all for getting unstuck, finding joy, nurturing connections, and creating impact. [13:08] My number one takeaway and challenge to you all: come up with a plan for you and your partner and then post it online and tag me so we can all see what your next adventure holds! Today we’re talking about a really controversial topic, and that is the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. I was in AA for three years and the first step is to ‘admit that we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.’ This mantra made me doubt and second guess other things in my life. It became this constant noise in the background. So today I want to talk to you about why I don’t actually believe that anyone is powerless and believing that you’re powerless can actually screw up any real successful attempt at change. Topics Discussed: [:51] About today’s episode. [1:10] My experience with ‘connecting’ to the twelve steps of AA and admitting I was powerless. [4:04] My mission with today’s episode: why nobody is powerless. [4:32] The meaning behind what “powerlessness” is and why it is such a troubling concept for anyone trying to recover! [11:54] What we’re really saying as helpers if we make those seeking help to proclaim they’re powerless. [12:16] The problem with making someone believe they’re powerless and why it ultimately doesn’t help them get better! [13:12] We are not powerless! Why being empowered and acknowledging our strengths and limitations help us confront the issues that really matter. [17:24] If you know somebody who’s struggling with this or you are struggling yourself, how are you going to exert your power? How are you going to take back control? What are you going to do in your life to start claiming back the right to live the life you want? In today’s episode, I’m speaking with someone about their experience in the IGNTD Hero Recovery program and their entire journey leading up to it. Richard’s experience is common to many people but it also has many unique facets, so I’m excited for you all to listen in and hear his journey. Richard’s struggles originate around drugs and alcohol, and like so many people, have to do with fitting in. Part of that is because Richard identifies as gay and is now discovering — like many of us — that we don’t have to fit into this “ideal” image of masculinity that we were all told to identify with growing up. This image of masculinity we were taught can be very problematic; it can affect your self-esteem, your anxiety, your stress, and your ability to fit in with others. Richard found himself in this position and by the time he came to us he had tried many other rehabs and methods of recovery, but nothing quite clicked. So today I want you to sit back and listen to Richard’s story and really pay attention to what happens when someone feels like they’re being rejected and shamed. And in the context of everything that we talk about here, what can we do to help people like Richard feel more accepted? Feel like they belong? Feel like less traumatized and less rejected? Because I think if we can do that across society, we’ll start seeing that a lot of these mental health and addiction struggles that we’ve been fighting against for so long will start disappearing. Topics Discussed: [:42] About today’s episode. [2:48] Richard speaks about his entire journey prior to finding IGNTD. [8:55] When did Richard discover alcohol and drugs as a method of coping? [17:25] Richard continues his story at the age of 27 when he began to get deeper into the world of drugs. [21:04] Richard’s journey into seeking help and his experience in various treatments. [28:48] The cycle Richard found himself in when seeking and going through treatments. [30:11] How did Richard discover IGNTD? [38:20] Richard’s experience with the IGNTD Hero Recovery program. [40:14] Richard describes the concepts that were powerful for him in the program and what it felt like to work through some of the core negative beliefs that he had. [42:27] How we worked through Richard’s belief that he was going to repeat the cycle of not making it past 2-3 months of recovery. [53:22] Thanking Richard for sharing his incredible story on this podcast. [54:06] What is the power of the IGNTD Hero program? How has it benefited Richard? [57:02] Has Richard talked to his parents since being in this new phase of life? [59:04] If this episode resonated for you be sure to share it with others who may benefit from it!
