In this episode, Jonathan and James navigate a mix of the absurd and the profound. They kick things off reminiscing about pandemic-era habits and the eerie realism of Superstore's COVID season. From there, they discuss a study showing that people are outsourcing their moral decisions to AI, much like a GPS leading them into a lake. This leads to a deep dive into the Fermi Paradox—if life is inevitable, where are all the aliens? Are they hiding, avoiding us, or have they all self-destructed in a cosmic tragedy? Things take a delightfully weird turn when they uncover research showing that ancient Egyptian mummies don't smell like dust and death, but rather pine and juniper. This revelation spirals into musings on historical smells, the underappreciated importance of scent in our daily lives, and—somehow—the best name for a nerdy stripper. It's a rollercoaster of logic, laughter, and lunacy, covering everything from the ethics of AI-driven warfare to the undeniable heartbreak of watching Godfather III. Buckle up.

Al Martino was an Italian singer and actor. He played Johnny Fontane in the original “Godfather,” “Godfather III” and the trilogy. He also sang the theme for the film. Al told me that he was blacklisted after he played the Fontane part because his character portrayal was based on Italian singer Frank Sinatra.  Director of the movie, Francis Ford Coppola originally took the part away from Martino and gave it to Vic Damone, but ultimately Al got the part. In 2018, Catherine Hand was one of two producers for Walt Disney's adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's beloved children's classic A Wrinkle in Time. Catherine's career in the entertainment business was launched working for the legendary writer/producer Norman Lear. She was the Associate Producer on Lear's Emmy Nominated ABC TV special, I Love Liberty, and helped to create the national nonprofit, People for the American Way. Later, she served as a development executive at Zoetrope, Francis Coppola's company where she worked on several projects, including Godfather III. Catherine has also worked for years in the public service sector. After having produced several large-scale events for national organizations, garnering a Gracie Award for best public affairs programming in 2009, Catherine was recruited by the Obama Administration where she was part of the core leadership team involved in communicating policy and political decisions impacting the federal workforce. Catherine shares some beautiful life lessons in this episode. "Faith is for when things are going wrong," she shares. Her lifelong dream did not come to fruition until after she turned 60. But she did not give up. "We can't changes things...but we can stop fearing them," she counsels. "Thoughts are temporary," she says of her 3:00 am musings. "They are not permanent," and we can talk back to them. One of her takeaways from writing her book, Becoming a Warrior, is that "Have something worth fighting for...that is greater than yourself." And others can benefit from what you have learned. Catherine encourages us to become warriors in the universe to illuminate others. She continues to develop new projects and enjoys coaching others to become warriors in their own lives. Her memoir, Becoming a Warrior is scheduled to be published by Bold Story Press on October 25, 2022. It will be available everywhere. "I read Madeleine L'Engle's award winning novel, A Wrinkle in Time, when I was ten years old and dreamt of one day making it into a movie. It would take five decades for my childhood dream to come true. My journey would include working alongside the television luminary Norman Lear in the creation of the nonprofit People For the American Way, and a 25 year-long conversation with author Madeleine L'Engle about her book. My memoir, Becoming a Warrior: My Journey to Bring A Wrinkle in Time to the Screen due to be released in October 2022 illustrates one woman's persistence—through a demanding career in the entertainment industry, the sudden and unexpected death of my beloved husband, raising three young children on my own—and eventual success. In 2018, over fifty years after I first read A Wrinkle in Time, Walt Disney Studios released a major motion picture based on this beloved novel directed by Ava DuVernay, written by Jennifer Lee and starred Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha Raw and Storm Reid." -- Catherine Hand “Catherine's journey of over 50 years to have A Wrinkle In Time brought to the Silver Screen is simply extraordinary. And the book's impact upon her life is both compelling and inspirational.” -- Alan Horn, Former Chairman of Walt Disney Studios - Motion Pictures “No one I've known ever loved a book more than Catherine Hand loved A Wrinkle in Time. Feed drop time! We're on a break from the show as we prepare for v5 of SquadCast and work on revamping the SquadCast podcast. So, we're bringing you carefully curated feed drops from some of our favorite SquadCasters. This week, we're spotlighting the work of Pam Uzzell, who's been a SquadPodder for a while now. SquadPod is what we call the SquadCast community on Slack. (Join us here). Pam Uzzell is a documentary filmmaker and podcaster currently living in Oakland, CA. At twenty-two, she began working in post-production, with credits in over twenty feature films, including Terminator 2, Godfather III, and Bram Stoker's Dracula. She is the director and producer of three independent documentaries, Some Call It Heaven (2007), Unearthing the Dream (2012), and Welcome to the Neighborhood (2018). More about Pam here. Here's what the episode is about, from Pam's website:Today, I'm joined by independent director and producer Alexi Lacey. She has over 20 years of experience in filmmaking, and her most recent project, Fiji Memory Colonial Time, has been on her mind since she was a teenager. The film explores the complexity of identity when it's been formed by privilege due to the exploitation of other people and the intended destruction of their culture. For Alexi, this was an opportunity to profile her mother's courage, share the bitter truths in their family's history, and the legacy of colonialism in Fiji. We discuss what motivated Alexi to pursue this story, how colonialism impacts our identities, and what she hopes viewers take away from this film. We also touch on the work that she does with issues around the housing crisis, displacement, and gentrification happening in San Francisco. Here's the description of the podcast, from Pam's website: Ready to unlock your inner artist? In this podcast, we explore the intersection between art and well-being. Listen as artists share how they creatively engage with the issues we all struggle with. Through their stories, we meet ourselves with compassion and find common ground. Why we chose this episode:Pam is an amazing producer and interviewer. The stories she chooses to highlight on her podcast are intriguing and heartfelt. We love how she effortlessly weaves in music to enhance her stories. Also in this episode:A pre-roll ad from Leah Carey's Good Girls Talk About SexPam UzzellJoin our communitySend us your podcast pre-rollsGet in touch with us on social mediaCreditsWritten and produced by Arielle NissenblattMixed and designed by Vince Moreno Jr.Artwork and logos by Alex WhedbeeHosted by Zach Moreno and Rock Felder

In this podcast we round out the trilogy by deep diving on nothing less than…remuneration via fees VS commissions. Beardy & Rolf from Coastsure Insurance Brokers, give us their insight about how they approach charging fees only for a portion of their business, and what they see are the benefits. We get to hear about proper costing of time for staff throughout their business, and how this helps the client. And funnily enough…the benefits of a clear Service Proposition come up again, in helping clients see the work we do. Because this is such a large issue for our industry, we hope this insight from a successful business helps you feel a bit more connected, no matter what business you're in or what your stance is for remuneration. Even if that stance undecided! We're not sure if this one is a version of Godfather III, Police Academy III or Hangover III. You be the judge… We hope you enjoy this one. CAGE OF CONSENT AND THE TEMPLE  OF DUMBSometimes to past is refuge, as with PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, 1986, one of Cage's earliest mainstream breakout films, directed by his Uncle Frankie, Francis Ford Coppola. Kathleen Turner goes back in time 25 years to high school and engages in, well, morally dubious behavior. Cage plays her husband in 1986 and her aspiring singer boyfriend 25 years earlier. This was the third and last Coppola film our maximalist hero was in (after Rumble Fish and Cotton Club). Nicolas Cage was reportedly a bit much on set in Peggy Sue, as we discuss, and it resulted in Coppola casting Andy Garcia in Godfather III and Keanu Reeves in Dracula instead of Cage, roles he wanted. What coulda been! Heck, Cage taking Sofia Coppola's place would have made a world of difference in Godfather III.  Other times the past is prologue to a current crisis, which resembles a global-sized escape room, as with National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007). The second of the epic National Treasure duology, Cage must clear his family name as it is smeared by being associated with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Everyone from the first film still alive returns and pretty much does the exact same thing. For fans of location work and practical effects in this depressing age of green screens, this one does have its merits!  Two movies about time from wildly different Cage eras; one right before he broke big and the other right before he broke small. We may talk hair for a bit. Our guests today are Andrea Kalas, vice president of archives at Paramount, and James Mockoski, archivist at Zoetrope. They explain how archivists help to reimagine a story whilst paying respects to the original works, and how new technology is able to make us fall back in love with a film all over again. GODFATHER III (Screen-Test) In 1990 Timothy Carey wanted to play the role of Don Alto Bello the 80 year-old patriarch subsequently played by Eli Wallach. Francis Ford Coppola wanted Carey in Godfather I and II . Carey turned down both opportunities. Two decades later, Carey was called upon again for the third and final story of the fictional Corleone crime family. To prove to Coppola that he could play an 80 year-old, Carey set-out to produce and direct himself in what would be his final project Timothy Carey's Screen Test for "GODFARTER 3" and the role of Don Alto Bello. Ep118: Legendary Editor Walter Murch On Optimizing Creativity, Productivity, and Well-Being In Hollywood For 50+ Years

Optimize Yourself

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2020 82:34

When you think of film editors, let’s face it - healthy habits and good physical conditioning are not images that immediately come to mind. But with a pandemic upon us, and with the high cost of the ‘Passion Tax’ we constantly pay as Hollywood creatives, healthy living is no longer an option - it’s a necessity. If we want strong immune systems and creative minds that are resilient to high-stress environments, it is imperative we adopt healthier habits like eating better and moving more throughout the day. While it might seem as though these are new concepts, today’s guest proves these ideas have proven successful for decades. Legendary and Oscar-winning Hollywood film editor Walter Murch (who has edited such films as Tomorrowland, Cold Mountain, The English Patient, Apocalypse Now and The Godfather III, to name a very select few) knows just how important it is to be health-conscious and physically fit in order to do the intense creative work that’s required to edit critically acclaimed films and documentaries. Walter has spent years not only honing his craft but also honing his most valuable assets: His body and mind. And for those unaware, Walter is THE leading pioneer in the standing desk movement (I just amplified his work, but he started it). In today’s conversation, Walter shares his secrets for maintaining his health and energy levels while working long hours on feature films. He dives deep into the neuroscience of why our brains work better when our bodies are moving more and the strategies he uses for incorporating movement throughout the day. We talk in detail about his specific creative process, the long-standing issue of burnout and excessive working hours, and how he feels about editors being classified as “below the line.” While this was originally a conversation from the ‘Fitness in Post’ days, there is an abundance of timeless wisdom to be gleaned from the legend himself who has survived well over four decades in a brutal industry where when people start dropping like flies, the executives simply reply, “Then get more flies.” (as Walter tells it) Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Zack’s favorite passage from the book, Behind the Seen (which he calls "porn for editors”) that became the inspiration for his healthy lifestyle and this podcast. The tragic story of Walter’s motivation to incorporate movement into his workday. Walter’s exact process for getting his body and mind prepared for any new project (and how you can adopt the same process). The importance of capturing ideas when they strike and his secret weapon to ensure he never misses one. The crucial task every editor should do to understand the script and inhabit the story better. Walter’s best advice for adding more movement throughout the day. What a short-order cook, composer, and brain surgeon have in common with editors and how he’s adapted his working habits to be more like all three of them. HINT: Standing is involved. Why skipping lunch breaks is not only bad for your health but bad for your productivity. Two tricks Walter uses to prevent low back pain when using a standing desk. How a sedentary lifestyle is shortening your lifespan and the ways neuroscience recommends reversing it. Why Walter only eats breakfast and lunch and avoids dinner. The amazing power of sleep and how it enhances your creativity. What the essence of being an editor is and what Walter believes are the essential skills necessary based on the technology today. How Walter approaches cutting documentaries versus scripted films and what the major similarities and differences are between them. KEY TAKEAWAY:  The seasick feeling or 'hiatus flu' that editors experience at the end of a project is completely natural, so be aware and do not make any big decisions during this time. With a career stretching back to 1969, including work on THX1138, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather I, II, and III, American Graffiti, The Conversation, and The English Patient, with three Academy Award wins (from nine nominations: six for picture editing and three for sound mixing), he has been referred to by Roger Ebert as "the most respected film editor and sound designer in the modern cinema." Walter Murch is a legend in the film editing world, having edited such recent films as Tomorrowland, Cold Mountain, and The English Patient, as well as some of the most historic and legendary films of all time including Apocalypse Now and The Godfather III. He is also the author (or subject) of several of the most influential texts ever written on the art and science of film editing including 'In the Blink of an Eye,' 'The Conversations,' and my personal favorite editing book of all time, 'Behind the Seen.' To put it simply, without Walter Murch there would be no Fitness In Post. It was a single picture of Walter standing at his workstation that inspired my personal development journey almost ten years ago. In this episode we discuss a wide range of topics about how he has maintained his health and longevity and survived over 5 decades in the film industry. You can't survive 50 years in post-production working on some of the biggest films of all time without knowing how to take care of yourself, and Walter talks all about his daily routines, how he prepares for upcoming projects, and many other topics listed below. This is episode is a MUST LISTEN for anyone hoping to have a long-lasting and successful career as an editor. Let’s not torture ourselves.” - How the industry has changed in the last forty years--from film to digital - What it means to be an editor in today’s world with today’s technology - The differences between working in documentary versus scripted - Walter’s thoughts on being “below the line” - Rebounding from working a long job, aka recovering from “hiatus flu” Useful Links: Missing link found between brain, immune system; major disease implications Behind the Seen In the Blink of an Eye The Conversations Essential tools for a standing workstation: apple box lacrosse balls vibrams foam rollers TopoMat Download the E-book 'How to Overcome (And Avoid) Burnout' Blog: 'My System For Getting Seven Hours of Sleep Every Night' Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, the show notes were prepared by Natalie Boschan, and this show is executive produced by Kanen Flowers.
