Kamil Tyebally is the founder of Early Spring NYC, a company that works at the crossroads between events, culture, connection and marketing, to create immersive brand events.Kamil's is an unusual story, and he starts by telling Anne how he went from Singapore to Myanmar to Thailand in his teens, and how he first discovered that life experience could match academic performance. His early passion for taking pictures led him to follow a path in photo-journalism in NYC at first, and Kamil explains about how his father sparked his adventurous spirit, which led him to meet his future self in Mexico City and develop two book projects that took him to Algiers (Algeria) and later to Baghdad (Iraq).Coming back to NYC, Kamil landed in marketing and business development. But, he tells Anne how he was set on getting a job at the innovative Fake Love company. This mission took him on a journey to explore culture, connection, technology and empathy — where, at the end, he found himself as the co-creative for immersive experiential events at Fake Love. Kamil's artistic leanings and his keenness to find what makes people tick is neatly encompassed when he talks with Anne about creating value beyond transaction and sparking moments of connections at his events. Kamil launched his company, Early Spring, just before the start of the pandemic with the objective (and the tagline) of ‘engineering serendipity' — which he describes as finding what people need before they even know they need it themselves. The two close the conversation by discussing vulnerability, instinct and finding a connection to their roots. A wide-ranging and fascinating interview with a thoughtful entrepreneur. Malik experienced racism from a young age initially in the care system where he was taken into custody aged nine in 1975 after his father had a stroke having committed no crime. He moved to several different community homes where he suffered varying degrees of physical and racial abuse over the years until his care order ceased at the age of 18. Soon after he was mentored by Gill Scott Heron who saw something in him that he did not see in himself - potential! There is so much here including a cup full of gems! Hope you are ready for the ride! The Revolution Will Not Be Televised was inspired by the Last Poets' Niggers Are Scared of Revolution. Letters to Gil available for pre order can be found here. Before Gil Scott-Heron, the legendary singer, pianist, and poet known as a “godfather of hip hop,” passed away in 2011, he spoke with his cousin, Baltimore soul-jazz vocalist Navasha Daya. He suggested that they work on some music together. “I enthusiastically agreed!” Daya said. “Sadly, he transitioned before we could fulfill the original plan.” Now, ten years later, Daya is fulfilling the promise she made to collaborate musically with Gil Scott-Heron. She recently released The Liberation Song (Red, Black and Green), a cover of a 1975 Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson song. It is the first single from Daya’s upcoming album Legacy (A Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron), which she calls an “ancestral dedication” to her cousin. For Daya, a major part of Gil Scott-Heron’s legacy is his activism. “He fearlessly spoke the truth about what was happening in society,” she said, pointing to his advocacy, with Stevie Wonder, for making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national holiday, and songs he wrote about the prison system, racism, and South African apartheid. Daya mixes activism and art in her work, as well. She is co-founder and director of the Healing & Performing Arts of the Youth Resiliency Institute, providing programming and services for children, youth and families in East Cleveland and Baltimore’s Cherry Hill. She is also co-director of the Cherry Hill Arts and Music Waterfront Festival, held at Middle Branch Park.Daya thinks Gill Scott-Heron should be remembered today in his totality as a pianist, author, songwriter, and singer, as well as for his activism and spirituality. “Gil Scott-Heron was not a commodity. He was multifaceted and really brilliant.”The Liberation Song (Red, Black and Green)by Navasha Daya and featuring saxophonist Gary Bartz, is available now on Bandcamp. Her album Legacy (A Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron) is expected to be released later this year. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gill Scott Heron – The Revolution Will Not Be Televised Ameríska ljóðskáldið Gill Scott Heron sagði það best árið 1970. Þú horfir ekki á byltinguna í sjónvarpinu. Það er ekki nóg að flatmaga í sófanum og borða pizzu og styðja aktívismann án þess að leggja neitt að veði sjálfur. Það voru aðrir tímar þá. Fólk […]
Duchess Harris and her son Zach present the story of the black women "hidden human computers" of NASA. Duchess' own grandmother -- Zach's great grandmother -- Miriam Daniel Mann was one of these amazing women who made significant contributions to NASA from the 1940s to the 1960s. They connect their personal family story to the history of the "space race" and discuss the obstacles blacks -- especially women -- faced in achieving a math and science education.
Italy's I-Robots is one of the most prolific re-editers in the game, putting out a slew of official reworks via his Opilec Music label. With his DJ career stretching back to the early '80s and with a sideline as a second-hand record dealer, his knowledge is impeccable. Uncovering rarities and forgotten gems, he manipulates tracks in both classic chop 'n' splice edit style and also in more complex arrangements. This mix is a journey through his edit suite. *How would you describe your sound?*"Nomad Sound" for sure... Nelson Mandella talk Jesse Jendah and Gil Scott sings JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The office of the South African president says Nelson Mandela remains in critical condition in a hospital. President Jacob Zuma said in the statement Tuesday that people must support the former president and anti-apartheid leader as well as his family, and show their love and appreciation for his leadership. The statement from Zuma's office says Mandela's condition remains unchanged and doctors are doing their best to ensure his recovery and comfort. Mandela, who is 94 years old, was taken to a hospital in Pretoria on June 8 to be treated for what the government says is a recurring lung infection. On Sunday, the government said his condition had deteriorated to critical.
