Matt and Mike Lisowski take listeners through the arc of their lives—from childhood as a Gold Star family in Georgia and Germany after losing their father, to the diverging but ultimately converging paths that led them to West Point. Mike's detour through prep school and Matt's start in college set the stage for their military careers in both the Army and the Navy. The brothers reflect on how loss, family, and service shaped who they became and the lives they've built beyond the military.

In episode 167, I sit down with actor, writer, director, and producer Steven Grayhm to dig into the 14-year journey behind his new movie Sheepdog and why truthful storytelling about veterans and combat trauma cannot afford to be filtered through a political lens. From his first encounter with a struggling tow truck driver in 2011 to years embedded with veterans, families, and VA clinicians, Steven shares how listening without prejudice became the foundation of this film and why he refused to “bend the knee” to Hollywood to get it made. Sheepdog is not another war movie or PTSD cliché but a deeply human story about post-traumatic growth, fragmented families, and the way ordinary people carry extraordinary burdens. Throughout our conversation, we challenge the idea that stories about war, veterans, and mental health should serve any party, policy, or culture-war narrative, and argue aggressively that they must exist to serve the people who actually lived them — period.  We unpack how character, craft, and performance can honor veterans and Gold Star families without turning them into propaganda pieces or pity objects, and why audiences deserve movies and podcasts that tell the truth as we see it, even when that truth is messy, uncomfortable, or unflattering to anyone's politics.  If you care about actors doing the work, about movies that respect the veteran community, and about storytelling that refuses to be weaponized, this episode will give you a clear, uncompromising case for art that chooses honesty over agenda every single time. Joe Oltmann opens the week with a single truth bomb: America has only ONE problem—a uniparty that betrays its warriors and steals its votes. From Mexico exploding into chaos while their socialist president shields cartels. Then the gut-punch: Tina Peters, Gold Star mom, coughs blood in a freezing cell while Colorado's “Republican” machine funds the same ES&S fraud boxes that jailed her. One problem. One enemy. One fight.Adam DeRito—Sky Soldier, whistleblower expelled from USAFA, author of the DeRito Act—comes locked and loaded. He'll tell the story of how the same Pentagon that weaponized psych evals against him now protects Colorado's rigged election system. Barbara Kirkmeyer wants to be governor in 2026—Adam calls her out by name: legacy RINO, budget-committee enabler, zero action on audits or machines. When GOP “leaders” abandon Tina Peters and fund the fraud, is it incompetence… or treason? Adam doesn't mince words: burn it down or bow down. The finale detonates the MAGA civil war: Trump torches Marjorie Taylor Greene over H1B visas, calls her “wacky traitor,” then unloads on Thomas Massie for daring to demand Epstein files. Donors vs. America First. AIPAC cash vs. American workers. The base is screaming while the President swings at his own. Is the movement fracturing at the worst possible moment? 4PM ET—lock in, pick a side, or watch the Republic burn.

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series. It's Chuck's chat with legendary Gold Star engineer Larry Levine, the man responsible, side by side with The Wrecking Crew, for building Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound”. His peak accomplishments include “Be My Baby”, “Summertime Blues”, “River Deep, Mountain High”, “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'”, “He's A Rebel”, "Then He Kissed Me", A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector, Pet Sounds, Smile, and so many others. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss poached Larry in 1967, making him A&M Records' Chief Engineer. Larry passed away just a few years after this interview in 2008, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure.   Here are just a few of the many things that Larry discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The early days of Gold Star and working with Phil Spector; The Phil Spector session that became the turning point in his working relationship with the producer; How Larry created the very first echo chamber, and an in-depth overview on how it developed over time; Larry's assessment of Brian Wilson's overall character; How Phil talked about Brian to Larry when Brian wasn't around; And his relationship with Chuck Britz. The video transcript proposes a simple and painless method for supporting veterans by suggesting that individuals redirect their credit card cashback rebates to a charitable organization. The speaker emphasizes that this approach requires no additional personal spending or budgeting adjustments, instead leveraging money that is already being returned to the user. The organization Tunnels to Towers (T2T) is specifically highlighted as a highly reputable charity that provides mortgage-free smart homes for injured veterans and offers support to Gold Star families and first responders. The central theme encourages viewers to establish a monthly habit of turning their "free money" into real-world impact as a meaningful way to honor Veterans Day.I used NotebookLM to put this together using my Video as it's source: https://youtu.be/CHoI4hdk0p4

Buckle up, patriots—it's a brutal postmortem on the 2025 off-year bloodbath that has conservatives reeling and the deep state smirking. From Zohran Mamdani's shocking socialist surge to NYC's mayoral throne—quoting Marxist icons who crushed freedoms abroad—to Abigail Spanberger's iron grip on Virginia's governorship and Jay Jones' vengeful ascent as AG, Democrats didn't just win; they weaponized the vote. Joe Oltmann blasts the undeniable: "We haven't won a single election since November 2024—the legacy set is rigged." Mark Cook warns we're "one or two elections from Venezuela," zero doubt. This isn't random; it's a calculated assault on the Republic, from NJ's blue wave to Virginia's radical rematch. Tune in as we dissect the fraud fingerprints and rally the roar against a system screaming for reform.Enter the unyielding warriors on the front lines: Lori Gimelshteyn, founder of Colorado Parent Advocacy Network (CPAN), storms the airwaves to expose leftism's siege on our kids. This patriot mom turned national firebrand mobilized 35,000 signatures to gut HB25-1312's speech-crushing tyranny, co-leads landmark lawsuits shredding school districts for secret gender transitions, firing "proud American" deans, and stripping dads of medical rights over mutilating teens. From her triumphant National School Choice bash—to the gut-wrenching Rocky Mountain Summit unveiling gender-affirming horrors via whistleblowers like Jamie Reed, Lori's battle cry echoes: parents, not the state, rule the roost. Hear her unfiltered fury on SEL indoctrination traps, custody kidnappings, and the medical mafia's grip—plus blueprints for every family to fight back. If Colorado's a battleground, Lori's the general we need nationwide. But the chill wind from NYC's Mamdani victory isn't just blue—it's a Sharia shadow creeping into Times Square, where crowds chant for Islam in every home and liberals cheer, blind to burqas and ballot-or-bullet threats from Muslim Brotherhood blueprints. Curtis Sliwa's dire warning rings true: Van Jones laments the "missed outreach," but we see the endgame—socialist jihadis remaking the Big Apple in Nehru's nightmare mold. As fallout erupts, we pivot to raw reaction: Fax-Blast Congress with our Tina Peters thunderbolt, demanding her pardon from Biden's dungeon for daring to decode Dominion's dark code. Free this Gold Star mom, ban the machines, mandate paper ballots and voter ID—or 2026 seals our fate in server-farm slavery. "Sara, I tried one little thing you recommended in our session and it totally changed my interaction with a team member!" Back story…I was leading a training for a leadership team recently and we talked about how to practice active listening in leadership.  One of the leaders decided to put one of my recommendations into action immediately (Gold Star for this leader!) and he was so excited about the results.  Following our training, he shifted his default behavior of “getting right down to business” in a one-on-one meeting to starting off a one-on-one by asking a team member an open-ended question.  This led to a great conversation and important insights between the two of them.  By getting curious before getting down to business, this leader fast-tracked trust and paved the way for open and honest communication with their team member.  He was giddy sharing this win with me.  I love it when new behaviors lead to new wins!  Curiosity is one of the most underrated, yet most powerful, leadership skills you can develop. In this episode, we dig into how curiosity can completely shift the way you lead, communicate, and connect with others. Whether you're managing up, collaborating across, or leading your team, curiosity opens up space for real conversation, minimizes assumptions, and builds relationships that feel grounded in care and respect. When you lead with curiosity, you create connection instead of disconnection, and you let the people around you truly shine. In this episode, I walk you through five ways to use curiosity to become a more emotionally intelligent leader. We'll talk about how to ask before assuming, how to get curious about motivations instead of just outcomes, and how curiosity can bridge differences when perspectives clash. You'll also learn how to replace performance check-ins with curiosity-driven conversations that make your people feel seen and supported, and why modeling curiosity publicly builds trust and psychological safety at every level of your organization. Ultimately, curiosity helps you become a leader who doesn't just manage people — but inspires them. #428: Andragogy in MedTech: Why Adult Learning Principles Beat Traditional Training

This episode of the Global Medical Device Podcast, hosted by Etienne Nichols with guest Shannon Decker, CEO of VBC1 and an expert in healthcare transformation, dives deep into the science of how adults learn, contrasting pedagogy (child-centered learning) with andragogy (adult-centered learning). The discussion reveals why traditional training methods, like handing new hires 40 SOPs to read, are often ineffective for experienced professionals in the MedTech industry.Shannon explains the core principles of andragogy: adults are self-directed, problem-centered, and bring a vast reservoir of experience to the table (schema theory). They are less motivated by sequential, externally guided learning and more by what is relevant, timely, and what is in it for them. This self-directed approach means successful training in MedTech requires catering to intrinsic motivation and providing tactile, real-world practice rather than just videos or documentation. The conversation pivots to practical applications across the medical device lifecycle. Shannon shares compelling examples, like improving physician adoption of a medical device by shifting the focus from extrinsic financial rewards and regulatory compliance to the intrinsic motivation of improving patient health outcomes. By making users part of the development process and using performance feedback to tap into a professional's competitive spirit, organizations can achieve significantly higher engagement and successful adoption of new technologies.Key Timestamps[03:20] What is Andragogy? How adults learn differently than children.[04:45] The role of schema theory and existing experience in adult learning.[05:40] Why the traditional "drop 40 SOPs" on a new hire's desk fails adults.[07:15] Case Study: The challenge of low medical device adoption and the missing education piece.[08:50] The power of tactile practice and addressing user confidence (e.g., misusing the device).[11:00] Contrasting Andragogy (self-directed) vs. Pedagogy (directed/sequential).[14:10] Applying adult learning to device development: solving the user's problem.[16:45] How to boost adoption: Intrinsic motivation and making users part of the process.[18:20] The key physician motivator: Desire to help people over money or administrative requirements.[21:10] Behavior science: Focusing on influential champions and mid/top performers for diffusion.[22:45] The "Gold Star" effect: Using competitive spirit and relevant KPIs for motivation.Quotes"The way we come to learning with adults is different... The best way that they learn is coming up with things that are relevant to them, things that are timely, things that they need. They want to be interested." - Shannon Decker"I don't talk about the money that they're going to make... What I talk to them about is by paying attention and doing these screening exams, you're going to have an impact on the overall health of your patient." - Shannon DeckerTakeawaysStop Relying on Documentation for Training: Adult learners need tactile input and practice. Replace or supplement large volumes of SOP reading with project team involvement, practical exercises, and hands-on use to build confidence and retention.Focus on the "What's In It For Me" (WIIFM): When designing a medical device or a training program, identify the user's intrinsic motivations. For clinicians, this is often the desire to improve patient outcomes—lead with this message rather than revenue or regulatory burden.Build Champions, Not Just Compliance: Instead of solely focusing energy on low performers or the loudest voices, identify respected, influential leaders (champions) to pilot and advocate for new technology. Their positive experience drives the Law of Respect and encourages wider...

The Scuttlebutt: Understanding Military Culture

We've asked 26-year Army and Pennsylvania National Guard veteran Matt P. Cahill to join us to talk about his Green Star Families of America (greenstarfamilies.org) nonprofit. Matt served as a medic in Iraq and later endured his own battles with PTSD, a traumatic brain injury, and the lasting wounds of war. Out of these experiences, Matt founded  a nonprofit dedicated to honoring and supporting the families of veterans who have died by suicide. Much like the Gold Star tradition that recognizes families of those killed in action, Green Star Families seeks federal recognition of a Green Star Service Banner as a national symbol of remembrance and dignity for survivors of veteran suicide. Matt, now also an advocate and social worker in training, has made it his mission to reduce stigma, build community, and fight for the visibility of these families who often grieve in silence. His work has already inspired legislative efforts, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships across the veteran community. We believe every veteran has a story to tell and wisdom to share. This event is a chance to listen, learn, and connect with others who understand the unique bonds and challenges of military service. If you have something on your mind—whether a personal memory, a question, or a topic you think deserves attention—we encourage you to bring it to the conversation. Veterans are also invited to email Todd DePastino at todd@veteransbreakfastclub.org with any specific topics or issues they'd like to discuss. The Veterans Breakfast Club's mission is to create communities of listening around veterans and their stories, and our Open Conversations are one of the most dynamic ways we do that. These sessions are often wide-ranging, emotional, funny, and thought-provoking, providing a welcoming space where everyone's voice is valued.
