Welcome to this Sauna Talk podcast episode with Nick Fox: Minnesota's first Wim Hof certified instructor and baker of amazing homemade bread. We communed in heat, cold plunge and nature in my backyard sauna recently and you'll hear my interview with Nick in just a moment. But before then, I'd like to take you back to a dark and cold February night in Minnesota a few years ago when Nick first sat down to watch the VICE documentary on Wim Hof, the Ice Man. Inspired by the science and adventures in the cold with minimal clothing, Nick began taking cold showers and practicing breathwork the very next day. His experience with the Wim Hof Method (WHM) initiated Nick's breathwork journey. In January of 2022 he went to Poland to complete his certification as a WHM Instructor, and later he became certified in the Oxygen Advantage. Now, he guides breathwork and coaches ice baths in workshops around the Midwest. Pulmonaut beginnings Before becoming a full-time Pulmonaut, (a pulmonaut is simply someone who uses their breath as a tool for exploration and transformation) Nick taught Philosophy, History, and Art at both the high school and college level. He is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, and spends his summers out in the field with the cadets at the Military Academy in West Point, NY. When he's not playing Army, he's writing and drawing with his young kids. Sauna Talk Podcast cold exposure breathwork guests Those familiar with this podcast are familiar with a few other Sauna Talk guests from the world of cold exposure and breathwork. A few that come to mind include Harvey Martin, who currently is on staff breathing and contrast therapy-ing with the San Francisco Giants major league baseball team, Jesse Coomer, trainer, breathwork coach and author of two books on the subject, and Wim Hof himself, back in 2017. So feel free to dig back and check out these episodes in particular. Back to Nick Teaching people deep conscious breathing and cold exposure techniques is his new passion. You can visit his website foxfirebreathworks.com where you'll be able to check out his upcoming workshops and classes. For example, in January 2024, it should be cold enough in Minneapolis for Nick's winter swimming class at the Swedish Institute. He is mobilizing a kick ass wood fired mobile sauna (one that I actually had a hand in helping with with my friends Brad and Ben at Prairiewood Saunas, but that's story for another day coming soon). Anyhow, Nick looks forward to helping you explore your inner strengths. And I am super happy to share some breathing on the bench with you and Nick Fox from FoxFire Breathworks. Welcome Nick to Sauna Talk!

“The feeling I get with wood fired (sauna) is so much deeper than any kind of heat I've every experienced. I feel human when I get out of a wood fired sauna.” Today on the sauna bench, we are joined by Mindstrong Harvey, founder, CEO, of The Mindstrong Project. Many of us may not have heard of the Mindstrong Project, but if you were a pro athlete talking about performance, breath work, contrast therapy, sauna, Wim Hof, or any combination of any of these, I can pretty much guarantee you that you would be well tuned to Harvey Martin and the Mindstrong Project. The thing is, Harvey is very humble and low key about his practice and his company. He, like many of my friends for some odd reason, fall into more of the camp of witness relocation program, vs. major social media marketers. And I can't speak for my other friends on the witness relocation program, but Mindstrong Harvey has good reason to be low key. The work he does with pro athletes is by reputation only. Harvey Martin's marketing is mainly his reputation And by extension, his marketing is defined by the proven performance measures from his clients. In a world where literally, every second counts, and where the slightest margin, the smallest incremental improvement in performance can mean playing in front of tens of thousands of people or sitting on the bench, from being signed to a big contract or relegated to the taxi squad, from being hero to .. i'm still trying… well, I don't know what your day job is, but to operate with that kind of pressure must require the upmost tuning, both mentally and physically. Pro athlete performance and wellbeing is the space where Mindstrong Harvey operates. Brick and Mortar – tree and lake location The Mindstrong Training the highest performing athletes in the world in nature. A training system outdoors. Physical movement, yoga, training, cold, sauna. “Wherever I go, sauna will be a part of my life.” Minnesota is way colder. Witness relocation program When you train professional athletes, they are on a level of celebrity. They have financial freedom and they are young. They don't have an opportunity to experience the build up. They go from 0 to 1 right away. Mindstrong Harvey is there to guide them. He has earned this level of respect within the small family of professional athletes. The athletes share Mindstrong Harvey with other athletes. A professional athlete lives so against nature. They travel, they fly, and when you can give them the most natural training environment, they appreciate simple systems. The connection with nature. Sauna in nature is bigger than all of us. A deep respect with Nature. Nature is the only system that can bring us to our own personal truth. Body adapting to the cold If you burn fuel too much, you become an emotionally reactive human. Limbic part of your brain The front of our brain, the pre frontal cortex is the rational part of our brain. n the cold, we are breathing less and Living in the front of our brains. You are training your physiology to train your psychology.
Cory Gregory (@corygfitness @maxeffortmuscle) is a life long fitness entrepreneur and competitor. He is joined by Brian Peters and Harvey Martin in an electric conversation about purpose, entrepreneurship, developing confidence, the importance of grit and standards, and making generational change. The boys dive deep into Cory's journey to create the job and life he wanted for himself. Grinding through the coal mine to become a personal trainer and eventually a successful fitness entrepreneur and owner of multiple supplement and fitness companies. He deconstructs he mindset and the things he uses to keep him, his business, and actions up to his high standards. Buckle up. Some of the boys get emotional. All of them get deep into the magic that is Cory's story, mindset, and structure to obtain a life he dreamed of. Enjoy!
With an imaginative, high-scoring offensive and a crushing defense, Dallas cruised through the regular season, the playoffs and the Super Bowl. The story of the 1977 Cowboys is told by Tony Dorsett, Thomas Henderson, Charlie Waters and Drew Pearson and each relate contribute to the story of their championship season. Each former player is able to offer insights (often humorous!) into their championship run. Tony Dorsett, Heisman Trophy winner, was the super-rookie that everyone expected to be the final piece of the puzzle in Dallas' return to championship form. It took him a while to learn the complex Dallas offense, but when he did, he was exciting to watch! Thomas Henderson was the maverick who gave himself his own nickname of "Hollywood Henderson" and rubbed everyone the wrong way! Charlie Waters was the safety who was the leader of the "Doomsday Defense" anchored by a defensive line composed of Harvey Martin, Randy White and Ed "Too Tall" Jones. Waters was the brain behind Doomsday who kept all the "personalities" working. Drew Pearson was Mr. Clutch because when team leader Roger Staubach needed a pass completion, he looked for the man who gave clutch performances when the game was on the line. These very different men talk about the struggles, the successes and the eventual victory in Super Bowl XII in which the often hated Dallas Cowboys rode to victory with a powerful defense and a well-executed offense.
Two incredibly mind-numbing wrongs were righted over the weekend, with former Cowboys safety Cliff Harris and wide receiver Drew Pearson being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Curiously, Pearson and Harris were the only two members of the NFL 1970's All-Decade first-team who were not already inducted into the Hall of Fame. With their induction, comes optimism from Cowboys fans that other former players will get their shot, and there is clearly a long list of Cowboys candidates. When you think about those Super Bowl teams from the 1970's, a few names come to mind that seem deserving. There are even a few from the more recent 1990's Super Bowl teams that match up well against players from other teams who are already in. Who are the greatest Cowboys players from yesteryear who we think belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Let's discuss? Please join us daily for the Daily Blitz at CowboysSI.com, TheBlitzcast.com, or the Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast YouTube Channel. And make sure to subscribe for all the latest videos and visual content! Then continue the conversation on our new forums, Twitter: @BlitzcastNFL and @IndyCarTim. To submit a question for the show please email us, or to submit your joke of the day to be considered for use on the air, email the show at TheCowboysBlitzcast@gmail.com with “Joke Of The Day” in the subject line. If we use your joke on the air we'll send you a free DSP Media / Cowboys Blitzcast t-shirt or hat!
Every so often you have a conversation with someone that you have such a nerd-like connection with on a topic that an hour conversation feels like five minutes. That was how my conversation with Harvey Martin went. Harvey is the founder of The MindStrong Project, an organization that takes training and human performance to a whole new level. They combine foundational nature based training with industry leading strength, movement, conditioning, and nutrition programs that give athletes a serious edge over the competition. My conversation with Harvey today centered on the most powerful thing every single living human has access to; your breath. Harvey and myself are both Art of Breath certified coaches and so we share many of the same practices around breath work. This was a great discussion with many practical nuggets to take away and implement immediately. Enjoy! Harvey Martin and Matt Arends of the MindStrong Project speak on the modalities used at the MindStrong Project, particularly heat and cold therapy, as tools that “bring you back to yourself faster”, that help anybody recover and reach a refreshed state of consciousness in the most natural way possible. Their work, ultimately, is around helping a person, through their own physiology, take control. The MindStrong Project believes in “respecting the animal” in our humanity while exercising the power that puts us at the top of the food chain, namely “advancing our cognition”. As Harvey and Matt explain, advancing our cognition tends to be prioritized at the expense of respecting the animal. Their team uses the modalities that they do in response to the environmental stressors of the modern world in an effort to prepare and allow the body to recover from those stressors. The MindStrong Project was founded in 2017 to shape the world of human performance by improving the physical, mental, and emotional capacities of top performers through tried-and-tested natural breath, movement, and mindset protocols. Their team of five combines foundational nature-based training with industry leading strength, movement, conditioning, and nutrition programs. Harvey Martin is the founder of The MindStrong Project. The MindStrong Project helps athletes and entrepreneurs raise their performance, reduce stress, and become better problem solvers by implementing natural breath and movement exercises in their daily routine. We've helped hundreds of athletes increase endurance, better manage in-game stress, and recover faster by helping them build a greater ownership over their own physiology. For entrepreneurs, we help them structure their day while providing concrete tools and techniques to be optimized during meetings or in times of creative thinking. Harvey himself specializes in training professional athletes within Major League Baseball, the NHL, and NFL and has consulted at every level of US College Athletics. Harvey also hosts The MindStrong Project podcast where he interviews everyone from Olympians to extreme sports athletes. Harvey’s unique approach to coaching follows the laws of nature. Creating adaptation through the basic necessities of breathing, nutrition, movement, and sleep. His work involves the use of environmental stressors such as heat and cold exposure with breathing techniques that teach performers how to shift their mental and physical state in the moment.

On this episode, MindStrong Project founder Harvey Martin and Strength Coach Brian Peters have an amazingly energizing conversation with Rich Hill, the Head Baseball Coach at the University of San Diego. In our conversation, Coach Hill shares his thoughts on how his success in coaching has been so sustainable. A few themes stuck out - Relationships and Connection. Coach Hill leans on influences such as Brené Brown, Nick Saban, and Mike Krzyzewski. He expresses an approach of treating players with firmness, while also being an authentic human. Brian and Harvey reflect how their own relationships with their leaders have held similar sentiments. Furthermore, Coach Hill discusses the importance of cultivating a strong mindset. He dives into the benefit of having a dynamic mental toolbox, and learning how to interact with fear. One overarching theme encompassed the entire conversation - Gratitude. Throughout the entire show, Coach Hill's mindset of abundance and appreciation were both inspiring and contagious. Coach Hill has built the USD Toreros into one of the premier Division I baseball programs on the West Coast. In his 33 years as a head coach at the collegiate level (22 at USD), he Coach Hill has amassed 28 winning seasons and is the youngest coach in the West Coast Conference (WCC) with 1,000 wins. Coach Hill spends his days surfing, doing breathwork and meditation, speaking, and aiming to connect with others in the most authentic and vulnerable way. After spending just an hour with Coach Hill, it's no surprise to see the success he's had at USD. ***Special Thanks to our great friend and mentor Logan Gelbrich, a former USD Torero himself, who connected us with Coach Hill.

Each day we make over 200 food decisions. As athletes, what we put in our bodies directly impacts our performance and the speed at which we recover from training or exercise. Glucose is used by the body for energy production, but too much of it and it begins to cause serious cell damage oftentimes leading to severe inflammation, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and poor tissue health. Glucose spikes are caused when too much sugar (glucose) is taken into the body at one time. The mitochondria become overwhelmed and the body produces free oxygen radicals that go and attack other cells. Glucose is a sugar/starch molecule in its simplest form, so think sugar, cookies, pastas, oats, among others. For years, athletes have been told to carb load before games or performance. But is it really all that good for us when we know that glucose spikes caused by eating too many carbs actually ends up hurting our bodies in the long run? The answer might surprise you. Join hosts Harvey Martin and Matt Arends as they chat with Jessie Inchauspe aka Glucose Goddess about the health impacts of glucose spikes, how to avoid them and flatten the glucose curve, and how to avoid the adverse effects the next time you go for that big bowl of pasta or oatmeal. Check out the amazing studies by Jessie on her Instagram: @glucosegoddess She releases studies on how to best pair food, what tricks can help you stabilize spikes, and which foods cause larger spikes than others.
