From one of the minds behind Rick and Morty, Netflix's new animated comedy Haunted Hotel is the perfect mix of fun and creepy to kick off spooky season. Will Forte voices a ghost who previously ran the Undervale, a very, very haunted old hotel. The show follows his attempts to show his family the ropes, vis a vis ghosts, demons, bleeding mirrors, and possession. To access bonus episodes and sponsor-free listening for Pop Culture Happy Hour, subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour+ at plus.npr.org/happy.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
WILL FORTE INTERVIEW! Greg Alba sits down with Will Forte (known for his iconic Saturday Night Live sketches & characters including The Falconer, Tim Calhoun, MacGruber, The Closet Organizer Guy, and Spelling Bee Contestant). We dive deep into how Nebraska (2013, directed by Alexander Payne) changed everything for him, what it means to find “heart” in storytelling, and how fatherhood has impacted his acting choices. Will also opens up about making Haunted Hotel (2024, animated horror comedy), collaborating with Tina Fey & Steve Carell on Four Seasons, and even working on a sketch show with his mom. We also discuss his absurd yet heartfelt comedy, from Last Man on Earth to MacGruber, and how his SNL journey shaped his career. Plus — Forte shares his love of horror classics like The Omen, Halloween, and The Exorcist, talks ghosts, existentialism, and what it means to balance absurdity with vulnerability. Fans of Coyote vs. Acme, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and The Lego Movie will love hearing about what projects he's most excited to share with his kids. This conversation covers everything — from career breakthroughs to personal reflections — all in classic Will Forte sincerity and hilarity Intense Suspense by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... This week, in Willard, Ohio, a deeply disturbed man moves back in with his mother, only to go deeper into strangeness, by not leaving the house for over nine months, not getting any psychiatric help, and heavily day drinking whiskey. One night, when his neighbor mows her lawn, after dark, he decides it's finally time to leave the house. This ends in a bloody confrontation, featuring unprovoked attack, and a lawnmower!! WITH SPECIAL GUEST, WILL FORTE!! Along the way, we find out that some people just get chased by dogs, that drinking huge amounts of whiskey doesn't help deep psychological problems, and that a lawnmower is a weapon that most people just don't think to use! On this week's episode, I'm joined by Matt Roller, the creator and showrunner of the new Netflix animated show Haunted Hotel. We discussed his background in television, how it helped prepare him for the long (shockingly long!) process of creating a full season of animated television, and why he is reading the comments. The show is live on Netflix now and I hope you check it out … and give it the preferred two (not one!) thumbs up, for the reasons Roller laid out in this episode. And if you enjoyed THIS episode, I hope you share it with a friend! (I could also use a thumbs up or two myself, you know.)

We visit haunted hotels you can actually book—from the Stanley Hotel (inspiration for The Shining) to Glacier National Park's Belton Chalet—with the hosts of National Park After Dark. Our guests, Danielle LaRock and Cassie Yahnian, share chilling tales of historic lodging near our country's most majestic parks. Join us (if you dare) to meet the West's creepiest overnight guests, including Scary Mary and her terrifying grip as well as a helpful suitcase-packing specter. Danielle and Cassie also provide practical advice for ghost-curious travelers, explain why the pleasures of staying in these classic sites can offset their supernatural challenges, and why you might not want to sleep—or even shower!—alone in some of them. Whether you're plotting your next national park road trip or just love a spooky story, this episode is for you. Spine-tingling highlights: The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, CO: Find out why the Stanley's vibes feel “spooky but wholesome”—and what really happened in room 217. Golden North Hotel, Skagway, AK: Gold Rush–era landmark where “Scary Mary” still stares out the window. Red Onion Saloon, Skagway, AK: Former brothel where a “doll & tube” system signaled which workers were available. Belton Chalet, West Glacier, MT: Meet giggling child ghosts and the lodge's resident spectral prankster, “Belton Bob.” Granite Park Chalet, Glacier NP, MT: Backcountry stone chalet tied to the 1967 “Night of the Grizzlies” and the 2003 Trapper Fire. Crescent Hotel, Eureka Springs, AR: Former hospital now frequently cited as one of America's most haunted hotels. Plus, listeners' paranormal encounters at Fort Bragg's Gray Whale Inn, aboard the Queen Mary, and in Laughlin, Nevada. And tips on how to visit haunted places with respect (say hello, set boundaries, and don't agitate).

Hi Everyone! I am in awe of today's guest and I can't wait for you to listen to this conversation! Jimmi Simpson is one of those actors that really makes you pay attention from the moment you see him onscreen. You may know him from playing Liam McPoyle on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or from his more dramatic work as William in Westworld, Walton in Black Mirror, Tom Andrews in Pachinko, or from one of many many other roles. It was such a pleasure to chat with someone whose work I really respect and learn that our process (or lack of process) is not that different! It was a nice feeling to realize that even someone who seems so disciplined and confident as an actor still faces lack of sleep, ADD and imposter syndrome. We talk about obstacles and opportunities and how to make your way through a challenge as an actor even when you may not know the best way to approach it. This is a great conversation about acting, but Jimmi also has lots of nuggets of wisdom about life in general. Plus, Jimmi's new show Haunted Hotel is really funny and beautiful and I can't wait for everyone to check it out! Be sure to stick around for the Hindsight, where my producer Jeph and I chat about the interview, as well as upcoming live shows and conventions! This week was pretty heavy with News Around the Nerdosphere, but not wholly devoid of trailers. The guys take a look at trailers for Haunted Hotel and Steve. From there, the guys analyze Paramount's power play as they landed the UFC in a shocking move. What does this mean for Paramount+, and will this help them challenge the streaming heavyweights for the top spot in the industry? The fellas take a look at the upcoming panels for New York Comic Con and give some early thoughts on which ones seem to stand out. Vought Rising gave us a first look at some costumes, Crunchyroll and Delta Airlines partner up, Fallout: Season 2 looks to be headed to New Vegas, and the rift between Beau DeMayo and Kevin Feige gets even uglier. Tonight is a listener's suggestion from Texas about a haunted location in... you guessed it, Texas. Miss Molly's Hotel in Fort Worth was formerly a bordello turned bed & breakfast that reports many instances of paranormal activity. From phantom sounds to whistling, touching and being watched, you name it, Miss Molly's has got it. Are these from patrons or madams of the former brothel and bar, or something more sinister? Would you visit Miss Molly's Hotel and stay for a spell or would the spirits chase you off like so many others before? Enjoy tonight's spooky location episode! Life on the road for musicians may sound glamorous—sold‑out shows, luxurious hotels, and the rush of touring—but behind the music, there are chilling stories that rock legends rarely talk about. From restless spirits lurking in the shadows of tour buses to spectral visitors in hotel rooms, and even unexplainable phenomena inside recording studios, the paranormal has long played a mysterious role in the lives of traveling musicians. We start with the eerie world of tour buses. For many bands, their bus becomes a second home, but these mobile sanctuaries have also been the setting for strange and unsettling encounters. Some musicians have reported waking in the night to see shadowy figures standing silently in the aisle. Others have spoken of cold spots, phantom footsteps, or the unexplained sound of knocking from the storage bays. Is it the lingering energy of past tragedies, or are spirits somehow drawn to the intense, emotional atmosphere of life on tour? Next, we check into the haunted hotels that touring acts frequent. Many historic hotels across the country are steeped in ghostly lore, and traveling bands often find themselves as reluctant overnight guests in these paranormal hot spots. From strange voices over the phone when the line is dead, to TV's turning on in the middle of the night, and even musicians waking to find a ghostly figure at the foot of their bed—some of these tales will make you think twice before staying in a famous rock‑n‑roll hotel. We'll share chilling accounts from legendary venues like The Hollywood Roosevelt, The Chelsea Hotel, and others that have left more than one touring artist shaken. Finally, we step inside the recording studios—sacred creative spaces where some of the most iconic albums have been born. But these studios have their own haunted histories. Engineers and musicians have described equipment malfunctioning at key moments, strange whispers bleeding into recordings, and feelings of being watched while alone in the control room. Some claim these spirits are former musicians still attached to the place they loved most; others think the heightened creative energy somehow invites supernatural activity. Throughout this episode, we'll share documented cases, first‑hand stories, and a few hair‑raising legends from the road. We'll also explore possible explanations—could these experiences be tied to the intense emotions, long hours, and sometimes tragic events that surround the rock‑n‑roll lifestyle? Or are these truly encounters with the other side, reminding us that music, like the spirit, lives on forever? Whether you're a paranormal enthusiast, a music lover, or both, this episode will give you a whole new perspective on the life of a touring musician. So grab your backstage pass, settle in, and join us as we turn up the volume on the haunted world of rock‑n‑roll travel. The last in Caro's Tahoe miniseries (but not the last of Tahoe content!) takes us to the Cal-Neva Hotel, a property that has changed hands many times, been host to celebrities, mobsters, politicians, and more over the years, and most recently, inspired a 2018 film featuring some folks you might be familiar with! Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe are the most famous of the folk said to occasionally haunt the Cal-Neva and other Lake Tahoe properties, but they aren't alone. It's time for Bizarre News for January 2025! We have four exciting and strange news stories for you this month.Story 1 - Bigfoot Sighting (Mansfield, Ohio): A man named Andrew Baum and his stepfather reported seeing a Sasquatch while setting up a tree stand on their farmland near Interstate 71 in December 2024. The BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) investigated and found the witness credible, though they questioned whether it might have been a human walking across the field rather than a Sasquatch.Story 2 - Alien Life Search Advancement: Scientists are increasingly optimistic about discovering extraterrestrial life due to technological advancements like the James Webb Space Telescope and the $100 million Breakthrough Listen project. Previous search efforts have been minimal (equivalent to scooping an 8-ounce glass from Earth's oceans), but new technology is expected to dramatically increase our ability to detect potential signs of life in space.Story 3 - Haunted Hotel for Sale (Ballinger, Texas): The Old Park Hotel, an 1886 two-story building known for paranormal activity including full-body apparitions and cold spots, is being put up for sale by its current owners Connie and Dan Lefebvre. The hotel, which has been featured on the Travel Channel, has attracted paranormal investigators from around the world, and the owners are seeking buyers who will continue operating it as a paranormal venue.Story 4 - Haunted Strathpeffer Pavilion (Scotland): A Victorian-era building in the Scottish Highlands has gained a reputation for being haunted, with reports of shadowy figures and unexplained phenomena. Recent paranormal investigators using specialized equipment like EMF detectors and spirit boxes claimed to have received clear responses through their devices, including being told to leave the balcony area.Want two more bonus news stories?
