Gina (perinatal fitness trainer and birth doula) and Roxanne (certified nurse midwife) share the story of Roxanne's fourth “bonus baby,” Harvey, and the end of her pregnancy leading into a planned home birth. Roxanne describes weeks of waiting, prodromal labor, and trying to start labor on her due date (January 7) before Gina left for a pre-planned Disney Marathon trip; a cervical check showed she was 1 cm and “super thick,” and labor stalled. After midnight while Gina is away, Roxanne has a gush of fluid, then contractions quickly become consistent and stronger. She calls her midwife, her mom, and backup support, and uses comfort tools like a TENS unit, shower, a Pixie heating pad, and acupressure balls. She labors in the birth tub using different positions; the midwife tries calling Gina, but she doesn't answer. Roxanne's water breaks and Harvey is born quickly in the tub, with brief pushing and no long second stage.Postpartum, Roxanne reports no tearing, no hemorrhage, less bleeding than prior births, and an easier recovery; Harvey weighs 7 lb 13 oz. In this episode, we get to speak with both mom and dad! We love when we get to chat with a home birth couple and hear both perspectives from the decision-making process to the experience itself. So we're chatting with Jarmar and Jonnelle Dupas. They live in Austin, Texas with their 4 children. Their switch to home birth happened with their most recent baby, Jase. For them, they were interested in something different and evolving from some of the coldness they noticed in the hospital setting. They had always used midwives with their births, so transitioning into home seemed like the next step. Jarmar and Jonnelle both described their home birth as much more peaceful. Basically, a thousand times better and something they would've done sooner had they known. A highlight from their story is that “divine connection” with their midwife Afua. We certainly know the difference that the level of care can make, and how important it was for us to feel connected and have a deep sense of trust with our midwives. And get this - they are a podcasting couple as well! Their show “Get Your Money Right” is all about financial well-being. We can dig that (since babies aren't cheap!). Listen in and enjoy as we get to know more about Jarmar and Jonnelle, their family and their magical home birth! What if fear doesn't have to be part of your first home birth experience? In this episode of the Pain Free Birth Podcast, Karen Welton sits down with Katie Brambila, a first-time mom and midwife-in-training, to share her incredible, God-filled home birth story.Katie brings a unique perspective to birth. Before becoming pregnant, she had already spent nearly three years in midwifery school and attended close to 100 births, most of them at home. Despite her extensive experience, Katie still had to confront common fears and stigmas surrounding first-time home birth, including the belief that first labors are always long, difficult, or destined for transfer.Throughout the conversation, Karen offers expert insight on dismantling birth fear, the importance of mental preparation, and why even highly knowledgeable women still need intentional support and mindset work in birth. Together, they normalize fear, highlight the vulnerability of labor, and encourage women to trust their bodies and God's design for birth.Tune in to hear:Why first-time home birth fears are common and how to reframe themHow mindset and mental preparation impact the experience of laborThe role of surrender and faith in pain-free birthWhy identifying and targeting specific fears is more effective than avoiding themHow breath, prayer, and focus can change how contractions feelWhat it's like to actively push and birth at home as a first-time momWhy support from a doula and birth team matters, even for birth professionalsConnect with Katie:IG: @katiebrambilaSend her a DM & mention this episode to receive free shipping on NORA Moon Time tea blend to support your luteal and menstrual phases.CONNECT WITH KAREN:Use code PODCAST to get $50 off the Pain Free Birth E-course HEREInstagramFacebookYouTube

Lindsee's first birth was a fairly typical hospital experience—and it left her feeling there had to be a better way to bring life into the world. When it came time to choose where her second baby would be born, she opted for a midwife-run birth center, and the difference was profound. The experience was respectful, empowering, and deeply positive. Like so many after a redeeming birth, Lindsee became fascinated by all things birth and eventually went on to become a doula herself. Pregnant with her third, she eagerly began planning a home birth. Tragically, that pregnancy ended in a devastating second-trimester loss due to a rare genetic anomaly. Much of how the hospital handled both the birth and death was deeply disappointing, with the exception of one compassionate nurse who stood out during an otherwise excruciating experience. Lindsee longed for another baby, but it was a long road before she finally saw a positive pregnancy test again. This time, she was able to welcome her baby at home, experiencing the birth she had always hoped for. Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Kaela.Kaela is a mama of one from Australia. In today's episode she shares about her empowering and natural home birth that turned into a hospital transfer as she had a 3rd degree tear. Hospital transfers and tears are the 2 biggest fears amongst pregnant mamas and especially you who listen to this podcast. So what better way of facing those fears than by listening to a mama who had, according to herself, the most empowering birth even though she had both one of the bigger tears that only around 5% of women get and a hospital transfer from her home birth.People usually assume I think a natural birth through and through is the be all and end all because I am a huge advocate about educating about natural physiological birth and the benefits of it. But if you've listened to me for any length of time you know this is not true, and if you're a student or mentee of mine you know it even deeper.I'm all for education in pregnancy and optimizing body, mind and soul for your desired birth outcome which I believe mostly have to do with inner work, facing fears and deeply getting to know your body, baby and having a relationship with your intuition.Once the first contraction hits you are now to surrender to the great mystery of birth. And a positive birth experience is not necessarily a natural one. Not holding on to a certain outcome for your happiness is so important and trusting that there is wisdom in the way you birth even if it's not the way you wanted it. We can learn so much about ourselves, our babies, our deep hidden patterns and allow birth to awaken us, transform us and enlighten us instead of feeling like failures if it didn't end up being exactly as we wished.I love that Kaela only have positive proud feelings around her home birth where some might have felt the opposite having had a 3rd degree tear and transfer.I hope her story and how she navigated her tear and transfer is inspiring to you and also might release some fear around these two occurring in your birth.Want to work with Anna or join The Sacred Birth Worker Mentorship?Find Anna's Website, about her Mentorship & How to Work with Her, as well as all Links & Resources she mentions in the episode here:www.sacredbirthinternational.com/links-podcast
Send us a textIn this episode, I'm joined by Fenja, who shares her freebirth story with honesty, depth, and clarity. At a time when freebirth is being widely discussed — and often misunderstood — Fenja's experience offers a grounded and much-needed perspective on what informed, conscious birth preparation can look like.Fenja speaks openly about the extensive work she did during pregnancy: building physiological understanding, engaging in emotional and mental preparation, and developing a deep trust in her body and decision-making. Her choices were not made lightly. They were rooted in knowledge, reflection, and personal responsibility.During her pregnancy, Fenja chose to hire a doula — not as someone to direct her birth, but as optional, woman-led support. When labour unfolded, she recognised that what she needed most was solitude and privacy, and she chose not to call her doula to the birth. This decision was hers alone, made in the moment, based on what felt right in her body and nervous system. With recent media coverage and coroner's reports attempting to suggest that doulas are influencing women to make unsafe decisions, Fenja's story provides an important counterpoint. It clearly demonstrates that women are capable of making informed, autonomous decisions about their own births, and that doulas do not make decisions for women — they support them, when and if that support is wanted. This episode is not about persuading anyone to freebirth. It is about respecting women's capacity to prepare deeply, think critically, and choose consciously.Fenja's story is thoughtful, grounded, and a deep reminder that birth choices cannot be reduced to headlines or assumptions. You can find Fenja and her work at helikraft.co.ukOn Instagram @heilkraftosteopathyIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Lindsay Bonnar was one of the first moms we spoke with when we started doing interviews back in the day. In our part 1 with her (episode 20) we talked about the birth of her daughter Charlie, whom she originally planned to birth at home, and eventually transferred to a birthing center to have an awesome birth experience. At the time, she was pregnant with baby number two and planning another home birth. Now, our part two (and episode 85!) with Lindsay is about the birth of her son, Linken. Spoiler alert: they did it at home! Linken was born at home, surrounded by love and support. There were a few curve balls during the birth. Lindsay would later learn that some cord compression was occurring and it was causing Linken's heart rate to drop. At one point, Lindsay's midwife thought they might have to go to the hospital. Paramedics were called and as if orchestrated, Linken made his entrance just as the responders arrived at their home. Everyone was healthy, safe and did not need to be transported. With the concern of the cord compression, this meant Lindsay had to push baby out efficiently and in a short amount of time. She told us how she pushed him all the way down the birth canal in less than 10 minutes. She cannot emphasize enough how important it is for mamas to do their squats in preparation for birth! Lindsay's part 2 is really a testament to stellar care in the form of her midwife, a loving, safe environment to support her and the incredible tenacity and power that is the birthing woman. This week on The Baby Tribe, Afif and Anne return after the Christmas “break” (parenting, but with more chocolate) and ease back in with a totally non-controversial topic: home birth and free birth. We start by clearly separating free birth (no medical care, no trained attendant, outside healthcare infrastructure) from planned home birth (full antenatal care, risk assessment, trained midwife support, and an escalation plan). This episode is not about shaming women or taking choice away. It's about risk, and what happens when birth stops being straightforward. We unpack what can go wrong for mothers, including postpartum haemorrhage and sepsis, and why peripartum deterioration can be sudden, making rapid multidisciplinary response crucial. Then we shift to babies, discussing why the initial steps of newborn resuscitation can happen at home, but more advanced interventions cannot, and why that matters when minutes count. We also talk about water birth, why labouring in water is different from delivering in water, and the rare but serious neonatal complications reported in the literature. Finally, we discuss Irish transfer realities using data from a recent audit of the HSE home birth service (2012–2021), including transfer rates and travel times, and why “transfer if needed” is not always the reassurance people think it is. If you're pregnant right now, chances are your mornings—or really, your entire day—feel like a constant battle with nausea.
We love the little synchronicities that the universe throws out there. Like publishing this episode right after our previous episode - completely unplanned. If you missed our last episode, we spoke with Jessicca Moore, the creator of the documentary, “Why Not Home?” a film that explores the decisions of hospital birth care providers (nurses, doctors, midwives, etc.) who chose home birth. Well in this episode, we have Alyssa's story. The synchronicity that we mentioned? Alyssa is a registered nurse, with most of her experience in the postpartum and nursery units. Our conversation with Alyssa is the perfect follow up to our interview with Jessicca last week, where we talk about birth professionals choosing home birth. Alyssa is this person! How awesome is that? And Alyssa is super knowledgeable. We were just in awe of all the information she has and can rattle off. There's so much that we included parts of her emails and additional resources in the extra notes with the episode on our website. Alyssa shares her passion for birth with us along with her journey of pregnancy and birth for her daughter Zoey with her husband Chris. They actually switched over to a home birth plan and midwifery model of care in the third trimester (so it's never too late for you to use the care provider that aligns best with you!). Like many of our guests, Chris and Alyssa watched “Business of Being Born.” Chris's response, “We can do this. Let's just do it at home!” We like his style! Alyssa has firsthand experience of what it feels like to choose home birth, when you work in an environment that does not typically support it. Fears, reactions and judgements from friends, family, co-workers come up in our talk. Also what evidence-based practice is about, the details around informed consent and why birth is not a pathological process. Alyssa's amazing birth experience and fascinating perspective given her profession make this a must-listen episode! In this episode, I speak with Dr. Nathan Riley about how modern systems shape pregnancy and birth — not just medically, but psychologically and culturally. This conversation isn't about rebellion or nostalgia. It's about responsibility, trust, and what happens when we're trained to hand those over.We talk about natural birth, home birth, and the power of doing less instead of more. C-section rates keep climbing and fear is introduced early through institutional rituals. Education, compliance, and credentialed authority train us to outsource knowing, especially during pregnancy and birth. From midwifery to birth trauma, from holistic health to reclaiming responsibility, this conversation connects dots most people never think to question. If you're interested in birth sovereignty, health sovereignty, and the deeper implications of how humans enter the world, this episode will challenge you. Carly from Saskatoon shares the story of her daughter, Nora. Carly took courses, planned for a home birth, and was excited for birth. At 40+3, labour began spontaneously and continued over the next few days. In labour, Carly developed an infection which she received antibiotics for and all was well. Her daughter was born vaginally and they experienced a few challenges immediately postpartum. Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Jolien.Jolien is a mama of two from the Netherlands. Today she shares her two birth stories, her first that was an intended home birth but became a transfer after 4 days of prodromal labour with everything happening that she did not want.If you do not wish to hear this first story then fast forward to her second redemptive home birth at around 30min into the episode. When becoming pregnant again Jolien and her husband decided that with their second pregnancy the only thing they could change to hopefully have a better birth outcome was to employ a doula. Because of her they ended up with an independent caseload midwife this time at 30 weeks pregnant. And she gave Jolien all the information and positive energy that she needed. This time Jolien ended up having a 2.5 hour birth at home in her bath without any intervention. The midwife only walked in as the head of Jolien's baby was born. Jolien's story really shows the importance of choosing your birth support wisely and that employing your own can make a world of difference. In today's episode, we're talking with Kayleigh Johnson, mama to 14-month-old Amelia and wife to DJ. Kayleigh and her family live in Massachusetts, where they are planning for the birth of baby number two. Amelia was born in a hospital with an epidural and pitocin experience. To Kayleigh, the pitocin contractions felt very unnatural. They way she puts it, “it felt like it was happening to me.” So after some soul searching, they decided on a home birth for this pregnancy. A big influence? Podcasts and social media! Kayleigh got to see and connect with real people, real stories that seemed attainable and allowed her to see the experience for herself. Kayleigh's faith is integral in her life, and so it's been a part of her birth planning as well. She was able to find a Christian midwife who aligned with her belief system (she even found her midwife on social media! Thank you, technology!). This synergy has been important for the connection she's seeking with her birth team. Kayleigh also has visions she is praying for in her birth. She's believing for a pain-free, no tear, en caul birth. We're happy and honored to hold that intention for her. And we're very excited to share her story with you! Send us a textWelcome to the November Q&A! Today, we start with a topic that always stirs strong feelings—birth partners. From the gestures that truly helped to the ones that fell short, we chat about your experiences of your partner's support, presence, connection or not.Next, we respond to an emotional call for help from a sleep-deprived and emotionally exhausted mother whose husband threatens to call the cops on her for how she handled an overwhelming moment with her toddler. Today's episode includes a special guest appearance from Nancy Wainer, world-renowned midwife and the woman who coined the term VBAC. Nancy answers a listener's question about an anterior placenta in a planned VBAC and explains what her decades of experience tell us about how placentas behave in utero. We also discuss endometrial polyps and whether a biopsy could affect future fertility, how to handle conversations about home birth within a hospital work environment, and how to choose a midwife when you have numerous options and like them all. In Quickies, we cover making baby-wearing more comfortable, the myth that labor “starts” at one centimeter, chiropractic versus pelvic floor PT in pregnancy, relieving newborn gas, timing big changes during teething, postpartum nutrition, and even whether to skip airport scanners while pregnant. We end with each of us pondering which baby names we'd choose today and our favorite ways to spend a slow morning at home.VBAC: How to Plan for Success#257 | Labor & Delivery Nurses' Roundtable: How Their Hands are Tied to Doctors' Orders#273 | Special Q&A Featuring Nancy Wainer on VBAC and More********** Needed
We have a fun and little different kind of episode for you today. Katy emailed us after her great friend and fellow DIAH mama Katie McCormick (from episode 73) shared the podcast with her. Katy thanked us for what we're up to with the show. As a “non-mom” (though she plans to be in the future), she's always been fascinated by pregnancy and birth. She's been exploring the option of home birth for herself when that time comes. So we figured...let's get on the phone, hit record and see what happens! We believe that what Katy's doing is an awesome example. If women who are not yet mothers are interested in exploring their future options, educating themselves, having conversations with other women at different stages of motherhood, then that means we have a lot more women empowered, confident and supported in their decisions. We are all for that! This doesn't mean all women need to be doing this. It's whatever works for you. We would just like to see more positive energy around conversations of pregnancy and birth, regardless of what phase of it someone is in. So Katy shares with us some of her thoughts on why home birth would be a good fit for her. For one, she likes to take the most natural route possible with things. She's also a more private person, and looks at birth as a very sacred time. We also talk about how resources like the Doing It At Home podcast have helped, supported and informed on home birth related topics. So if you are not pregnant yet, but considering home birth as an option, this is a perfect episode for you! In today's episode, we're talking with Becky Diaz - a personal trainer, nutritionist, and placenta encapsulator who used fitness and nutrition to help prepare for her most recent home birth. Becky and her husband Hugo live in Los Angeles, California and have 3 children: Riley, Julian and River. Her first was born in a hospital, where she experienced an epidural and pitocin. For babies 2 and 3, they decided to go with home birth. Becky was really interested in how she could use the experiences of pregnancy and birth to really push herself and learn about herself more. In our conversation, we talk a lot about the preparation she did for her third birth for baby River. This pregnancy involved a lot more mental work - being more mindful and not just muscling through the birth. This was more about trust and surrender to the process. Becky utilized techniques like meditation to support her. She used a visualization practice of seeing the sensations as waves crashing and washing away, rather than a painful contraction. Birth for her was incredibly spiritual, and she says it was the most meditative she's ever felt. Becky is a beautiful examples of knowing yourself, tapping into that and using it to help you prepare for such an incredible experience like birth is. Another key piece of advice from her that we totally agree with: “Don't listen to someone else's horror story.” In other words, be mindful of the material you take in during pregnancy and birth preparation. It can really make an impact. Building a new home that feels like it's been here for a hundred years has been a labor of love (and a learning curve!). In this solo episode, I'm sharing the latest updates from our farmhouse build, what's been harder (and more rewarding) than expected, and the details that are truly making our home look historic. From kitchen plans and farm goals to my favorite baby wrap, birth method, and thoughts on balancing homemaking and entrepreneurship, this conversation is a mix of practical tips and real-life reflection from my current season of life. In this episode, we cover: - An update on where we are in the farmhouse build and what has surprised us throughout this unique building process - How priming and painting every board, trim piece, and bit of crown molding has slowed the process but is worth it for the truly historic look - What I've learned about creating a historic-looking new build and why proportions matter more than you may think - Is it possible to build a “new old home” on a tighter timeline or with a smaller budget? - Some of my kitchen plans, including the Lacanche range and wood cookstove I've been dreaming of for cozy winter baking - What we plan to use our land for and how we are learning from my sister's full-time farm - Why I'm such a staunch believer in babywearing and which wrap I'd choose if I could only have one - The reason I won't have a water birth and the method I swear by that's made my labors nearly pain-free - Thoughts on whether it's possible for moms to truly balance homeschooling, cooking, and homekeeping all at once - How Luke and I divide our work, homeschool, and business responsibilities in this season as a full-time entrepreneurial family View full show notes on the blog + watch this episode on YouTube.
