Scaling UP! H2O
440 Mental Health in the Workplace with Dr. Andy Melton

The best leaders are the ones that can hold space for both—care personally and challenge directly. Work never happens in a vacuum. Field calls, customer pressure, travel, and deadlines compound the very real mental load carried by water professionals. In this conversation, Dr. Andy Melton, a professional counselor and executive coach at  www.andymelton.com—shares clear, practical ways leaders and teams can recognize mental health warning signs, set the right boundaries, and respond with care without stepping outside their role.  Care Personally, Challenge Directly—Inside Clear Boundaries Managers aren't neutral parties, and that matters. Andy explains the built-in conflict of interest when a supervisor probes too deeply into an employee's personal struggles. You still need to check in—but do it in role: use open-ended, performance-anchored questions (“What's been challenging for you lately?”), document observations, and offer resources instead of diagnoses. He also highlights Kim Scott's “Radical Candor” frame—care personally and challenge directly—as a durable leadership posture for tough conversations.   Spotting Decline Early—Behavioral, Cognitive, Physical  Before missed KPIs and callbacks spike, there are tells: sudden drops in productivity, withdrawal, irritability, rising absence/tardiness, markedly negative self-talk, and physical complaints (fatigue, headaches, stomach issues). Andy shares a simple “dashboard” self-check—sleep and eating patterns—plus trackable 1–10 scales for stress, energy, engagement, and mood stability to catch trends early.  When It's Serious—Safe Paths and Resources  Anonymous surveys can surface urgent risks—including suicidality. Andy outlines responsible next steps: widen communication, invite follow-ups, and immediately involve a mental health professional or crisis resources. Know the number 988 and your local mobile crisis team information; publish those options prominently so help is never far away.  Grounding Under Load—3 Techniques You Can Use Anywhere  For anxiety (mind racing ahead) and depression (mind stuck in the past), uniting mind and body in the present increases bandwidth. Andy teaches three job-friendly tools: the four-second “box” breath, a five-senses “sensory scan,” and a head-to-toe “progressive muscle relaxation.” Each can be done discreetly at a desk, in a service truck, or before a customer meeting.  Strong operations require strong people. Build a culture that normalizes check-ins, provides resources, and keeps performance expectations clear. That's how teams protect each other and maintain reliability in the field.  Listen to the full conversation above. Stay engaged, keep learning, and continue scaling up your knowledge!    Timestamps    02:20 - Trace welcome Industrial Water Week is next week and why it's our "Super Bowl" 11:38 — Water You Know with James McDonald 13: 11 - Upcoming Events for Water Treatment Professionals    15:14 - Introduction for Dr. Andy Melton 15:35 - Andy's background 19:06 - Why mental health is hard to discuss at work; stigma and judgment 21:40 - Cognitive/physical signs: negative self-talk, fatigue, headaches, stomach issues 23:33 — Why self-awareness is hard; “mirror” idea of counseling/coaching 24:21 — Self “dashboard”: sleep and eating as early indicators 26:22 — Employer question: caring without crossing the line 31:44 — Impact on teammates and operations; why the talk still must happen 32:06 — Culture: build trust so care is believed 36:12 — Psychological safety: education via outside counselors/coaches; offer EAPs 42:07 — 988 explained; local mobile crisis teams and how they respond 45:06 — Awareness first: listen to body; define “stress” simply 48:27 — Grounding overview: techniques to reunite mind and body   Quotes  Struggles in mental health still have stigma… but I do think there are ways to handle this sensitive subject in the workplace. At first glance you may be forgiven for thinking this fairly obscure 1962 British film was one of those forgettable ‘let's put the show on right here!' teensploitation flicks full of popular music acts of the day, bland and generic enough to offend nobody other than crusty old colonel-types who objected to young people being seen to have fun. But this film, the feature directorial debut by Richard Lester, was something a little different, with an eye for visual flair to differentiate it from the formulaic British musical films which had preceded it. Lester pretty much determined that he had to make the absolute most of what he was given to work with and we see in the film the earliest knockings of what would later become known as the music video; and he would use these techniques to greater effect a couple of years later in A Hard Day's Night. There was also actual proper comedy, not in abundance but any dads in the audience would have been reassured by the presence of Derek Nimmo, Mario Fabrizi, Frank Thornton and Hugh Lloyd – not to mention the soothing tones of Deryck Guyler as ‘The Narrator'. Lester employed cartoonish, one might almost say Goonish flourishes throughout the film: fast motion, reverse spooling, the aforementioned omnipresent narrator who's in on the joke and there's even a custard pie gag. The pairing of just-about-still-relevant pop stars Helen Shapiro and Craig Douglas as the film's colourless leads was necessary to draw the target audience but by 1962 how many teenagers were still into Mr Acker Bilk, Chris Barber or even Chubby Checker? The Beatles' heavy footfall was a creak on the stair and within months this sort of music would be swept away as Merseybeat and beat groups in general bestrode the Hit Parade. Joining Tyler to discuss “the whole swingy parade [which] goes like a good-humoured bomb” (The Daily Mirror) is Andrew Hickey, host of A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs who believes it is a standout film of its genre, but says the credit is largely owed to Richard Lester and his unique directorial style. He discusses the musical and cultural climate in Britain at the time, the origins of Trad Jazz, the early career of Lester and how films like this were usually largely cinematic landfill, plus talks about his show and plans for the future. (Recorded February 2025 and first heard on Goon Pod Film Club)

In the early morning hours of December 2nd, 1805, Rostov was patrolling the skirmishing line near Bagration's detachment. Behind him he could see his army's campfires glowing. In front the French were covered by misty darkness. Rostov was exhausted. His eyes would close and his fancy appeared—now the Emperor, then Denísov or whirling Moscow memories. His hussar companion occasionally alerted him to steer his horse out of bushes.   He was disappointed his unit was not advancing and wanted to ask for permission to join the attack. He was dreaming about The Czar, envisioning how they would have a chance encounter and he would receive an assignment. He was confident he would do a superb job and develop a relationship with the sovereign.  How faithfully he would guard Alexander, tell him the truth and unmask any deceivers!   Rostov pictured how he would humiliate and kill an enemy of the state, either a Frenchman or a deceitful German ally, all in the presence of Alexander. Suddenly, a distant shout aroused him. He opened his eyes but only noticed the surrounding hills and white patches of snow. His mind veered toward his sister, who he wished to tell of his acquaintance with the Czar.  Soon enough, there noticeable sounds in the distance. It appeared to be commotion from a group. He noticed fires igniting all along the landscape.  The shouting grew louder.  He was near one of the main French camps. Rostov could hear French spoken but not the words. The voices merged into a roar only an army could produce.  The lights spread and he heard the triumphant shouting of the enemy – the famous, “Vive l'Empereur! Vive l'Empereur!”  He was witnessing inspired men, more genuine than anything in Rostov's camp.  The spectacle was so obvious that it attracted Generals Bagration and Dulgarukov. The latter suggested it was just a decoy.  Dulgarukov felt the main force retreated but Bagration realized his adversary was a force to be reckoned with and directed Rostov and a few others to investigate.  Rostov was frightened but thrilled to propel into danger.  Bagration called out for the group to not go beyond a certain stream. Rostov pretended not to hear the order. The French voices grew closer and soon enough there was shooting.  The Hussars presence may have been noticed but it also could have been excited French firing  into the air.   Rostov's group retreated back to Bagration.  Rostov reported that the French presence was consistent with previous scouting. Bagration thanked Rostov, who leaped at the opportunity to ask to join a squadron that would  advance.  Bagration allows Rostov to join his own unit, sensing he is meeting Ilya Rostov's son.  Rostov thanks the Lord and felt he was a step closer to becoming involved with the Emperor.    Tolstoy, as Narrator, lets us in on what was happening among the French. There was celebration because Napoleon was riding and sometimes walking through the camps while his written orders were being read.  This would cause the fires, as soldiers would light wisps of straw and run after him; and others would fire guns into the air.   Further, the soldiers knew the critical battle would be fought on the anniversary of Napoleon's coronation, just a year prior at Notre Dame. This was considered a good omen. Tolstoy conveys Napoleon's inspirational and historic message. It includes: Soldiers! I direct all your battalions. I will keep out of fire if you -- with your habitual valor carry disorder and confusion into the enemy's ranks -- but should victory be in doubt, even for a moment, you will see your Emperor exposing himself to the first blows of the enemy, for there must be no doubt of victory, especially on this day when the honour of the French infantry is at stake, so necessary to the honour of our nation.

Diving into a novel usually involves a level of trust. We assume that the characters on the page are telling the truth, or at the very least, we trust that the narrator will inform us when someone is spinning a web of lies. But what happens when the narrator is the deceiver? Unreliable narrators may lead us astray due to a variety of reasons; deliberate deception, mental illness, flawed memory, bias, or a limited or skewed perspective. Sometimes the reader finds themself deep into a story before realizing that they've been lied to all along, forcing them to rethink every single page! In today's episode, Briana speaks with Kim, Shannon, and Christy about the novels and narrators that left them questioning everything they thought they knew. These books will keep you guessing long after the last page has been read. Book RecommendationsThe Goldfinch by Donna TarttAtonement by Ian McEwan Listen for the Lie by Amy TinteraIntro Music by nikitsan

Nicole Cash is a highly skilled performer whose training in classical music allows her to captivate audiences and connect people through the power of sound. She served as 3rd Horn with the Dallas Symphony, and Associate Principal Horn of the renowned San Francisco Symphony, until she was diagnosed with focal dystonia, a career-ending repetitive movement disorder. The meandering road of recovery and rediscovery led Nicole to the art of audiobook narration, to which she brings the same keen sense of rhythm, intonation, lyricism, and drama.Nicole delights in voicing the blood-curdling suspense of a dark thriller,  the complex characters of literary and historical fiction, and the heart-warming nostalgia of a coming of age story. Her experiences as an African-American woman compel her to share the tangled theories and truths of social science and political justice tomes. As the mother of two young children, Nicole feels right at home bringing to life all sorts of fantastical characters and creatures, and finds great joy in being silly. Most often described as “warm, clear, engaging, and easy to listen to,” her voice is a hug that envelops the listener in whatever story she is sharing. When away from her home studio on the North Shore of Long Island, NY, Nicole can be found creating custom cakes for friends and family, attempting to grow organic vegetables and herbs in her garden, skiing, singing karaoke, and of course…reading.https://nicolecashchronicles.comhttps://www.instagram.com/nicolecashchronicles/ https://www.facebook.com/nicole.cash.56Make sure you SUBSCRIBE to Crushing Classical, and maybe even leave a nice review! Thanks for joining me on Crushing Classical! Theme music by DreamVance.I help people to lean into their creative careers and start or grow their income streams. 3/8. In The Iliad, Professor Emily Wilson highlights the narrative's sophisticated literary techniques, comparing them to an English novel. The poem expertly navigates between an omniscient narrator and individual characters' points of view, delving into their minds. Wilson also notes the challenges of translating ancient Greek, citing, for example, the existence of three distinct words for "spear," each carrying specific connections that she endeavors to render dynamically into modern English. This intricate storytelling was a hallmark of 7th-century BCE Greek. 1200 TROY

Send us a textEver found yourself deep in a Reddit rabbit hole, judging strangers' moral dilemmas from behind your screen? You're not alone. This episode takes you on a journey through some of Reddit's most thought-provoking "Am I the Asshole" stories, where we dissect social boundaries, personal quirks, and the grey areas of human interaction. From a heated confrontation over a medical condition versus a no-shoes household policy to the unexpected drama of allowing dogs but not children at a wedding, these stories reveal how everyday decisions can spiral into complex moral quandaries. We dive into a particularly hilarious case of a coworker who narrates their lunch like a cooking show host ("You're just a sad sandwich. Don't worry, I'm gonna eat you anyway"), examining when quirky becomes uncomfortable and when it's appropriate to speak up about unusual behavior in shared spaces.Throughout our discussion, we share personal insights about how our own experiences shape our judgments - including a tangential but passionate debate about the proper Star Wars viewing order and reflections on childhood experiences that influence our adult perspectives on social norms. What makes these discussions so compelling isn't just the drama of each situation, but how they challenge us to examine our own boundaries and values. After all, in most interpersonal conflicts, there are rarely perfect heroes or villains - just people navigating social waters with different priorities, limitations, and communication styles.Ready to judge along with us? Studios hate him. A blind film critic dropped one review on Rotten Tomatoes and suddenly producers are begging him to reconsider… and he might, if they add audio description in film. That's power. That's disruption. That's John Stark. He launched the Blind Film Critic Society with Alex & Lee (because if the Razzies can start in a living room, why can't blind critics start a movement?) He's now a legit Rotten Tomatoes blind critic. And when he posts? Studios listen. Or panic. Sometimes both. He's exposing how credits for audio description accessibility are erased. Writers invisible. Narrators uncredited. Audiences cheated. He's calling BS. And here's the kicker: he's proving exactly how audio description helps blind audiences experience films fully, while showing the industry why ignoring it costs them money, loyalty, and credibility. This episode slaps. It's not just film reviews with audio description; it's a playbook for shaking an entire industry awake.
