EVs are already displacing 1.5million barrels of oil usage per day or 3% of total road fuel demand, however emissions from vehicles are still responsible for between 12-16% of global emissions. But now imagine a world where there are no ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars on the road. That's the future that is needed if we are to hit net zero targets. To realise this by mid century annual EV sales must hit 138 million units by 2040.In this episode of The Next Five podcast we take a deep-dive into the current landscape, tackle the future for EVs from industry leaders in the legacy and pure EV space, and highlight the opportunities and challenges along the way. Adrian Chai, Managing Director, Institutional Banking Group at DBS Bank discusses the gaps in finance in the EV value chain and where capital needs to flow to support the industry growth, as well as the future of the fast evolving battery market. Pras Ganesh, Executive Vice President & Corporate Information Security Officer at Toyota talks about the challenges and opportunities that legacy automakers have in the space, how capital investment is front loaded in new technologies and calls for a just transition. Mike Whittington, Head of Global Sales and Network at Polestar offers insight from a pure EV business model, extolling the need for supportive policy and greater investment into infrastructure globally to meet climate targets. How are electric vehicles (EVs) likely to reshape the car insurance market in the next few years? How should you advise your clients around the use of EVs from an insurance perspective? In this episode of the Insurance Broker Podcast, we're very pleased to be speaking with Steven Williams and Rob Durbin, who are both at the forefront of Direct Line Group's evolving strategy for and assessment of the electric vehicle market. In this revealing and informative conversation with Boston Tullis' Sarah Myerscough, Steven and Rob reveal the fallacies in many common beliefs about how electric vehicles work, and dispel many outdated notions regarding the safety and reliability of the technology. Furthermore, they explain how the insurance market must adapt in order to facilitate manufacturers' rapid transition towards electric vehicles, in light of the impending ban on the manufacturing of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles in the UK, in 2030. Listen now to hear their fascinating insights into this rapidly evolving market for both consumers and business owners.   Quote of the Episode ‘Cars are becoming computers on wheels.' The technology behind EVs is extraordinary, and has undergone rapid evolution since these vehicles were introduced to the mass market around ten years ago. As such, there remain some prevailing myths regarding the safety and efficiency of these vehicles. Fears of the car battery losing charge and anxieties about not being able to find a charging station whilst on the road continue to prevent many drivers from taking the leap to electric vehicles. Yet, at full charge, most new EV releases are capable of running for 200 miles or more. Most drivers, especially post-pandemic, don't travel all that much, and therefore this mileage capacity is more than sufficient. Nonetheless, the EV industry isn't without its growing pains.   Key Takeaways Electric vehicles are an emerging risk. They are relatively new to the market, at least on a wide scale, as they work very differently from ICE vehicles. While the electric vehicle market is the only motor market that grown in the last 18 months, there remains a generalised perception that they are hugely expensive. This is compounded by the costs of insurance, which are particularly high for electric vehicles. A key reason for this is due to the fact that, in the event of an incident causing damage to the car battery, it will be immediately decommissioned. An EV battery can be worth as much as 75% of the cost of the vehicle. Consequently, insurers face higher claims costs if and when EVs are involved in accidents, leading to higher premiums for customers to pay. Nonetheless, EVs are undoubtedly safer than ICE vehicles, and they typically include many advanced safety features to significantly reduce the risk of accidents on the road. This technology undoubtedly presents great opportunities for manufacturers, insurers and consumers alike, with advancements in vehicle safety and efficiency and improvements in the speed of insurance resolutions already underway. Yet, there are still great costs to account for. However, there are alternative methods for becoming an EV driver available. New ‘usership' models are currently being developed, which mirror the basic premise of a subscription service, by which you play a fixed monthly fee, including maintenance costs, insurance and tax, for access to an EV. This new market is experiencing a significant buzz, enabling drivers to use these environmentally friendly vehicles at a much lower cost overall and at great convenience. Salary sacrifice schemes are also available, granting companies a more affordable means of granting their employees access to an EV fleet. There remain a lot of unknowns in the EV world. While the car insurance industry has decades of history with ICE vehicles, we have only 10 years of data and understanding to inform decision-making about electric vehicles. As such, insurance professionals are learning all the time, but adaptation to what will in future be an EV-dominated market remains a work in progress.   Best Moments/Key Quotes “Although EVs have been around since about 2013, they are probably considered nothing new at the moment. What is new is the apparent rise in their popularity and numbers and affordability. That's being driven primarily for a few different avenues. There's a lot more conscientiousness in the public around climate change. Also, the cost of living, cost of fuel prices, especially last year, was driving a lot of people to shift to EVs.”   “For ICE vehicles, we have decades and decades worth of information. On EVs, it goes back to 2013. So, every month, we're learning and there's so many more models of EV that are going to come out in the next three, four or five years. Certain manufacturers are only going to be delivering ICE vehicles from 2025-2026 ahead of the legislation in 2030, which says you can no longer sell ICE vehicles, it has to be a plugin, either hybrid or, or [electric].”   “Clean air is the ultimate benefit of all this. Therefore, if we can help our customers make that transition, that's good for them, good for us, but also good for the wider environment.”   Resources Direct Line – A Complete Guide to Electric Car Insurance: https://www.directline.com/car-cover/magazine/electric-car-insurance Direct Line – Electric Made Easy: https://www.directline.com/car-cover/electric/electric-made-easy   About the Guest Steven Williams is the lead of Direct Line Group's EV strategy. This is compared with data from the NFPA showing on average there is a vehicle fire every 19 million miles.   Original Source : https://www.benzinga.com/tech/21/08/22405918/tesla-says-fires-are-11x-less-likely-for-its-vehicles-compared-to-the-average-us-vehicle   TESLA CEO ELON MUSK EARNED $11BN LAST YEAR   - Elon Musk is the most highly compensated chief executive in the world, according to Forbes' calculations. The platform calculates that he was paid $11 billion in 2020 all in Tesla stock options awarded to him as part of the compensation plan he signed with the electric carmaker in 2018.   - Musk is entitled to options that will allow him to buy a total of 101.2 million Tesla shares at a split-adjusted price of $70 per share. What is more, the compensation is divided into 12 tranches.   - The first four tranches of Musk's options awards vested in 2020, as Tesla hit various market capitalization and operational milestones and its stock increased sevenfold, boosting Musk's fortune astronomically   - Musk must hold the newly awarded Tesla shares for five years, according to filings. So while he has the right to exercise a total of 33.77 million options from his 2020 awards, he can't immediately turn around and sell those shares   Original Source : https://face2faceafrica.com/article/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-earned-11bn-last-year-making-the-sa-born-the-highest-paid-ceo-in-the-world   MIAMI'S $120 MILLION 'FUTURE-PROOF' CAR DEALERSHIP REFINES THE LUXURY BUYING EXPERIENCE   - Warren Henry Auto Group is betting big on its future, having constructed a $120 million dealership in North Miami, Florida.   - The company's story stretches back to 1976 when Larry Zinn's father Warren opened his first car dealership.   - The new North Dade dealership site is the equivalent of 19 acres of concrete across seven stories. It allows for more of the company's inventory to be kept in a climate controlled environmen   - Zinn calls the new space "future proof" saying that it's been wired for 400 electric vehicle chargers across multiple floors.   - Today, 90 percent of buyers shop online before arriving at the Group's retail outlets.   Original Source : https://www.newsweek.com/miamis-120-million-future-proof-car-dealership-refines-buying-experience-1617641   KIA SOUL EV BOARDMASTERS EDITION IS A SURFER'S DREAM MACHINE   - Automakers often destroy pre-production prototypes after they've reached the end of the development process, but Kia's U.K. division recently saved a Kia Soul EV prototype that was destined for the crusher. After it avoided an untimely death, this Soul was transformed into this custom, lifted surf-mobile for Boardmasters 2021, a surfing and music festival on the Cornish Coast in England.   - the Boardmasters Edition retains the production car's powertrain, with a 64.0-kWh battery   - sits on new 16-inch white steel wheels shod in 265/75 R16 Maxxis Bighorn tires, which required redesigned wheel arches.   - Along with off-road tires, the Boardmasters Edition gains a modified suspension with a 3.0-inch lift, as well as a 4.3-inch wider track at the front and 4.5-inch wider track at the rear. There is also steel roof rack that holds a pair of Tahe Bic Malibu surfboards   - The Soul EV Boardmasters Edition will be on display throughout the festival from August 11 to 15.   Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a37258964/kia-soul-ev-boardmasters-edition-details/   FORD TAKES CHARGE OF ITS BATTERY SUPPLY CHAIN   - Today China, South Korea and Japan dominate battery cell manufacturing, while raw minerals are sourced from several primary locations including Chile, China, Africa, as well as the US, Canada and Australia for some materials.   - According to the Ultima Media report, there are surges in demand for lithium batteries around the world; along with regional spikes that are hard to forecast, there is the threat of demand outstripping the supply of crucial minerals, such as nickel, cobalt and lithium.   - Ford recognises that recent raw material price increases are an indication of demand outpacing supply and it calls on government and private enterprise support to secure the battery chain.   Original Source : https://www.automotivelogistics.media/electric-vehicles/taking-charge-of-battery-supply/42164.article   MAGNA'S PROPRIETARY 'EBEAM' AXLE TECH   Original Source : https://www.futurecar.com/4793/Magnas-Proprietary-eBeam-Axle-Tech-is-a-Novel-Solution-to-Electrify-Pickup-Trucks   NHS DEVELOPS ELECTRIC AMBULANCES WITH FORD   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/08/09/nhs-procures-fleet-of-electric-ambulances/   ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGEPOINTS SET TO BECOME NEXT GREAT BRITISH EMBLEM   Original Source : https://www.gov.uk/government/news/electric-vehicle-chargepoints-set-to-become-next-great-british-emblem   WOLFEBORO PD ADDS TESLA TO ITS FLEET OF CRUISERS   Original Source : https://www.conwaydailysun.com/news/local/wolfeboro-pd-adds-tesla-to-its-fleet-of-cruisers/article_2a1a0b74-f90a-11eb-bb19-83794ce00898.html   WHY BYD BLADE BATTERY IS AHEAD OF COMPETITION   - Currently the LFP (LiFePO4) cobalt-free chemistry allows to build EV batteries that are extremely safe, durable, simple, affordable and with good performance. Since – unlike NCM or NCA – LFP battery cells are extremely safe and won't burn or explode even if punctured, the battery packs don't require much safety equipment and can adopt a simple CTP (cell-to-pack) format becoming module-less.   - Everbright Securities analyzed the cost of several battery packs made with LFP cells from different companies and you'll see why BYD is ahead of competition.   - Cost of LFP (LiFePO4) battery packs   Average with modules: 650 yuan (85 euros) per kWh CATL with CTP: 570 yuan (75 euros) per kWh BYD with CTP: 420 yuan (55 euros) per kWh   - Everbright Securities estimates that SIBs (sodium-ion batteries) are 30 % cheaper to produce than LIBs (lithium-ion batteries), dropping the cost per kWh below 40 euros.   - Remember when the auto industry told us that when the kWh cost of battery packs reached 100 USD (85 euros) electric cars would achieve price parity with their gas-counterparts? Automakers that don't plan to soon start using cobalt-free battery cells in CTP packs aren't serious about mass producing affordable electric cars. The technology is right there in front of them.   - With a good 60 kWh LFP battery costing around 3.300 euros today there is no good reason why we still allow automakers to profit from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars that poison our air.   Original Source : https://pushevs.com/2021/08/10/this-is-why-byd-blade-battery-is-ahead-of-competition     QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   On a scale of 1-10, where does ‘environment' rank for the reason you're interested in EVs?   Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONAL CAR CHARGING ON THE US MAINLAND AND ALOHA CHARGE IN HAWAII DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   STELLANTIS MAKES 30 BILLION EURO WAGER ON ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET   - Stellantis (STLA.MI), the world's No. 4 automaker, said on Thursday it plans to invest more than 30 billion euros ($35.54 billion) through 2025 on electrifying its vehicle lineup. The company, formed in January from the merger of Italian-American automaker Fiat Chrysler and France's PSA, said its strategy will be supported by five battery plants in Europe and North America as it gears up to compete with electric vehicle (EV) leader Tesla (TSLA.O) and other automakers globally.   - Stellantis said it is targeting more than 70% of sales in Europe and over 40% in the United States to be low-emission vehicles - either battery or hybrid electric - by 2030. It aims to make the total cost of owning an EV equal to that of a gasoline-powered model by 2026.   - Stellantis said it wants to secure more than 130 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity by 2025 and more than 260 GWh by 2030. It said it has signed memorandums of understanding with two lithium geothermal brine process partners in North America and Europe to ensure supplies of lithium, a critical raw material for batteries.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/stellantis-says-h1-margin-expected-top-annual-target-55-75-2021-07-08/     STELLANTIS TO SOURCE OVER 260 GWH IN EV BATTERY CAPACITY BY 2030   - Stellantis currently has two gigafactory projects, one in France and one in Germany, under its joint venture with Total, called Automotive Cells Company (ACC).   Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares announced that it would also be building a gigaplant in Italy at its engine facility, and one in the US.   - Stellantis said that its plans included dual battery chemistries, including a high energy-density option and a nickel cobalt-free alternative by 2024, with a solid-state battery technology introduction planned in 2026.   - As part of its strategy, Stellantis is also aiming to reduce battery costs using its technical expertise and manufacturing synergies, with it targeting to reduce EV battery pack costs by over 40% from 2020 to 2024 and by more than an additional 20% by 2030.   Original Source : https://www.spglobal.com/platts/en/market-insights/latest-news/electric-power/070821-stellantis-to-source-over-260-gwh-in-ev-battery-capacity-by-2030   AFTER SLOW START, STELLANTIS BETS BIG ON EVS   - Just by mid-decade, said Tavares, the goal will be to have 55 plug-based vehicles in global showrooms: 40 battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, and another 15 plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, or PHEVs.   - The PSA side of Stellantis, drawing on experience from core brands Citroën, Opel and Peugeot, is further ahead when it comes to electrification. In the U.S., the former Fiat Chrysler brands trail the competition. It currently offers no all-electric models and just two plug-ins, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan and the new Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The response to the 4xe has taken company officials by surprise, generating more than 20% of Wrangler sales since its April debut.   Original Source : https://www.forbes.com/wheels/news/stellantis-ev-plans   STELLANTIS DELAYS AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC CARS UNTIL 2026   - Stellantis EV Day 2021 was embarrassing. The 3 hour video presentation was all about putting together multiple nonsense commercials and delaying the introduction of affordable electric cars.   - Four BEV-centric platforms are the backbone of the electrified vehicles from Stellantis brands. The platforms are designed with a high level of flexibility (length and width) and component sharing, delivering economies of scale as each platform can support production of up to two million units per year. The four platforms are: ● STLA Small, with a range up to 500 kilometers/300 miles ● STLA Medium, with a range up to 700 kilometers/440 miles ● STLA Large, with a range up to 800 kilometers/500 miles ● STLA Frame, with a range up to 800 kilometers/500 miles   - Stellantis recognizes that CTP (cell-to-pack) combined with cobalt-free batteries are the two most important technologies available today to make affordable electric cars that compete with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars in price and availability. However, Stellantis will delay the introduction of these two technologies until 2024. Moreover, only in 2026 the TCO (total cost of ownership) of Stellantis' electric cars will match ICE cars   - With this decision, Stellantis leaves an open door for Chinese automakers to arrive and dominate the European EV market very soon   Original Source : https://pushevs.com/2021/07/08/stellantis-delays-affordable-electric-cars-until-2026/   STELLANTIS TO INVEST €30 BILLION IN E-MOBILITY   - In the US, performance brand Dodge plans to launch its first electric muscle car in 2024, Ram will sell an electric version the 1500 in 2024. Jeep wants to offer plug-in hybrids in all SUV segments by 2024, the Wrangler 4xe is already sold out for this year. The Jeep Wagoneer is to be targeted as an all-electric premium SUV primarily for the US market.   - In addition to the gigafactories of ACC (the joint venture together with Total subsidiary Saft), the cells are to be sourced from CATL, BYD, SVOLT, Samsung and LG Energy Solution, preferably from their European plants. The 50 GWh for the USA are to be procured from partners, while names are not yet mentioned since final negotiations are reportedly still underway. In 2030, the demand will be the 260 GWh mentioned above, of which more than 170 GWh will be in Europe. Half of this – 85 GWh – is to be covered by ACC. Either ACC will have to expand the factories in Douvrai, Kaiserslautern and Termoli or build further gigafactories.   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/08/stellantis-to-invest-e30-billion-in-e-mobility   VAUXHALL EV-ONLY BY 2028 AS STELLANTIS RAMPS UP ELECTRIFICATION   - The company – whose brands are Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall – has targeted low-emissions vehicles (LEV) accounting for more than 70% of its European sales and 40% of its US sales by 2030. The LEV term includes both electric cars and plug-in hybrids.   - Opel – including Vauxhall in the UK – will become an electric-only brand in Europe by the end of 2028 in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The firm will also expand into the Chinese market with a range of EVs. The German brand has also confirmed that it will revive the Manta name for a new EV. Opel has previously shown an electric restomod version of the Manta, but a teaser of this latest car shows it will be entirely unrelated, with the concept's low-slung retro silhouette making way for a high-riding and altogether more SUV-esque proposition.   - , Fiat will become electric-only by 2030, with the exact date determined by customer demand, and will launch a new dedicated EV in 2024. Its performance offshoot, Abarth, will also go electric-only.   - Stellantis has also released 'statements' for all 14 of its brands to reflect the electrification approach of each. Alfa Romeo's statement is "From 2024, Alfa Becomes Alfa e-Romeo", although the firm has yet to specify exactly what this means.   Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-manufacturing/vauxhall-ev-only-2028-stellantis-ramps-electrification   STELLANTIS INVESTS IN ITS FIRST ALL-EV PLANT   - The automaker plans to devote its factory in Ellesmere Port in the UK to electric LCVs (light commercial vehicles) and passenger EVs, with the plant slated to produce models under four brands: Opel, Vauxhall, Citroën, and Peugeot.   - The plant will receive a new body shop, an on-site battery-pack assembly facility, and an upgraded general assembly.   - When it comes to light commercial vehicles, the Ellesmere Port plant will produce battery-electric versions of the Opel and Vauxhall Combo-e and its passenger variant, as well as the Citroën e-Berlingo along with its passenger version, and the Peugeot e-Partner with its own passenger model.   Original Source : https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a36954284/stellantis-first-ev-plant/   THE STELLANTIS BRANDS HAVE NEW 'GREEN' SLOGANS AND THEY'RE PRETTY TERRIBLE   Abarth – “Heating Up People, But Not the Planet”         Alfa Romeo – “From 2024, Alfa Becomes Alfa e-Romeo” Chrysler – “Clean Technology for a New Generation of Families” Citroën – “Citroën Electric: Well-Being for All!” Dodge – “Tear Up the Streets… Not the Planet” DS Automobiles – “The Art of Travel, Magnified” Fiat – “It's Only Green When It's Green for All” Jeep® – “Zero Emission Freedom” Lancia – “The Most Elegant Way to Protect the Planet” Maserati – “The Best in Performance Luxury, Electrified” Opel/Vauxhall – “Green is the New Cool” Peugeot – “Turning Sustainable Mobility into Quality Time” Ram – “Built to Serve a Sustainable Planet” Commercial Vehicles – “The Global Leader in e-Commercial Vehicles”    Original Source : https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-stellantis-brands-have-new-green-slogans-and-theyre-pretty-terrible/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   If you had to buy one electric car today and it was the only car you were allowed to drive for the next three years, what would you choose? HIs name is Beneil Dariush, saying he's been waiting for his Tesla delivery for 6 months, and he needs a good car for his family! [audio] DMV PROBING WHETHER TESLA VIOLATES STATE REGULATIONS"Tesla is “under review” by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to determine whether the electric car maker misleads customers by advertising its “full self-driving capability” option, the agency told The Times." reports Russ Mitchell for The L.A. Times: "A Tesla equipped with the $10,000 full self-driving package can change lanes, take highway exit ramps, and stop at traffic lights and stop signs on its own, the company says. However, it is not capable of fully driving itself, according to widely accepted engineering standards. social media are rife with videos showing drivers, mostly young men, overcoming Tesla’s easily defeated driver-monitoring system to crawl into the back seat and let the Tesla “drive itself” down public highways. If the DMV finds Tesla is misleading customers, potential penalties include suspension or revocation of DMV autonomous vehicle deployment permits and manufacture and dealer licenses, the DMV spokesperson said." https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-05-17/dmv-tesla-california-fsd-autopilot-safety STELLANTIS: GOVERNMENTS MUST CONSIDER TRUE COST OF ELECTRIC CARS"Governments must consider the need to keep cars affordable for the masses and the full lifecycle impact of a vehicle when mandating the switch to full electrification. That’s according to Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares, who wants it to be remembered that “the scientific decision on the choice of this technology hasn't been made by the automotive industry”." says  Autocar: "Tavares said he was committed to bring in EVs as required by legislation, but even more so on reducing emissions. However, he said that governments mandating purely on tailpipe emissions are missing the bigger picture and driving up the cost of vehicles for consumers. Tavares expects Stellantis’s future manufacturing footprint in Europe to stay the same after the switch to electrification - but failure to do so would lead to “social consequences”, likely restrictions and redundancies." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-environment/stellantis-governments-must-consider-true-cost-electric-cars VW LEADING BEV SALES IN EUROPE"Taking an ever bigger step back, we’ve got all electric vehicle sales from the overarching brands or groups/alliances — making a comparison of sales from all of their electric models combined gets us to true electric vehicle sales leadership in absolute terms (relative sales leadership, taking into account these companies’ fossil-fuel vehicle sales, is a different matter)." says Zach at CleanTechnica: "Volkswagen Group pulls away even a little more than the Volkswagen brand itself when you look at the stats from this perspective. It stands in a whole different league than the rest of the pack. Looking at the first 4 months of 2021, Tesla drops down to #5, while the Stellantis alliance (more than 10 automotive brands combined) shines much more than any of its individual brands, even passing up the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Volkswagen Group is on track for more than 150,000 sales in Europe in 2021. Maybe it's time to cut subsidies on PHEVs?" http://ev-sales.blogspot.com/2021/05/france-april-2021.html SANDY MUNRO SAYS POLESTAR SHOULD BE PROUD"In the third episode about the Polestar 2, Munro Live reviews the undercarriage of the car, which usually is the most interesting in the series, due to the vast experience of Sandy Munro. The overall evaluation is very positive. Sandy Munro said that he is pretty happy with what he saw under the Polestar 2 and that Volvo/Geely parent companies should be very proud of the Polestar." says InsideEVs: "Sandy Munro found also a few interesting solutions to reduce wind noise. He of course appreciated the use of big casting parts, referring to Tesla's single-casting approach. It's great to see that new EVs on the market are well-engineered." https://insideevs.com/news/507896/sandy-munro-polestar-2-undercarriage/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles  2022 CHEVROLET BOLT EUV AND BOLT EV SHIP OUT TO DEALERSHIPS EARLY"Production of the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV and 2022 Chevy Bolt EV has started, and first cars are already shipping out to dealerships, GM confirmed Monday to Green Car Reports. Amid many delayed rollouts and arrivals, due to microchips and supply-chain issues, that’s about a month earlier than GM suggested earlier this year. Per the update from GM, first Bolt EUV deliveries will be made by the end of May.  Both models, built in Lake Orion, Michigan, represent a Bolt EV refresh for 2022, but it’s the Bolt EUV that updates the Bolt EV formula with a slightly larger form factor. The EUV is just 6.3 inches longer than the EV, on a wheelbase that’s 2.9 inches longer, but it offers more backseat space and cargo versatility. " says Green Car Reports: "The Bolt EV retains that 259-mile rating with its 2022 refresh, although the Bolt EUV, with its higher curb weight and potential aerodynamic differences, has received a range rating of 247 miles. This is big news! LFP now represents 52 % of all battery cell production in China, but its market share is expected to grow even more in the coming months. In most electric cars NCM will be relegated to more expensive trim levels, while LFP will become the standard battery cell chemistry." writes Pedro fo PushEVs: "While Chinese automakers have been extremely fast to adopt LFP as the standard battery cell chemistry, other automakers will follow this strategy. Tesla, Volkswagen and Renault already stated that LFP will become the chemistry that allows to mass produce electric cars that compete with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars in price and availability." In terms of costs at the battery pack level with the CTP (cell-to-pack) technology:NCM/NCMA: 90 euros per kWhLNMO: 80 euros per kWhLFP: 70 euros per kWh https://pushevs.com/2021/05/17/lfp-monthly-production-surpassed-ncm-in-china/ SSE ADS RENAULT ZOE VAN TO ITS COMMERCIAL VEHICLE FLEETSSE, one of the UK’s leading utility providers, has identified the Renault Zoe Van as being the ideal vehicle to help with the electrification of its commercial vehicle fleet.the UK’s only fully electric car-derived van was recognised as the perfect replacement for several ICE vehicles where the range of existing commercial-focused EVs had previously compromised the transition to pure electric power. SSE’s new Zoe Van’s will be used by its supervisors and team leaders to visit the company’s operational sites and developments throughout Scotland. COALITION TO SPEND $2.3 BILLION TO ENSURE AUSTRALIANS KEEP DRIVING PETROL CARS"Australia’s struggling fuel refineries will be propped up by the Morrison government in a multi-billion dollar handout that will see Australia hooked on petrol vehicles, while the federal government continues to snub the fledgling electric vehicle industry." according to the driven.io: "The Morrison government will provide more than $2.3 billion in subsidies to Australian based oil refineries through a new Fuel Security Service Payment that will top up the revenues they receive when fuel prices drop below a certain threshold." https://thedriven.io/2021/05/17/coalition-to-spend-2-3-billion-to-ensure-australians-keep-driving-petrol-cars/ AMAZON TESTING RIVIAN ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS IN SAN FRANCISCO"After a short stint in Los Angeles, Rivian's electric vans moved on to San Francisco in March.  The latest expansion to San Francisco is part of Amazon and Rivian's initial program to test the electric vans. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   RENAULT ZOE SELLS ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE CLIO "Last month the all-electric supermini ZOE was Renault’s second best selling car, only a little behind the extremely popular Clio. The sales of the Renault Twingo ZE are also getting very close to its gas counterpart." reports the PushEVs.com blog: "December sales in Europe...Clio: 20,404, ZOE: 16,035. At the moment, Renault seems to be the legacy automaker that is making the best transition to electric cars in Europe, by having good electric alternatives to its most popular ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars. Another important reason for success is the fact that electric cars sold by Renault currently have the lowest delivery times in Europe. As for the ZOE, it’s still much more expensive than the Clio in countries without government subsidies to buy electric cars, so it might take a while until it’s ready to completely replace its dirty sibling."   Luca de Meo had said on Renaulution event that they are going to start using LFP chemistry as well. Could be from the CATL European production base in Germany (CATT - Contemporary Amperex Technology Thuringia).   Cobalt free, and cheaper. In Erfurt they will build the cells and make them into modules ready for EVs.   https://pushevs.com/2021/01/21/renault-zoe-sells-almost-as-much-as-the-clio-in-europe/   SKODA PLANS TO PRODUCE BETWEEN 250 AND 350 ENYAQ IV DAILY Skoda began production of the all-electric Enyaq iV in November, and by the end of the year delivered about 600 units. The manufacturing target at the Mladá Boleslav plant in Czechia was set for 250-350 Enyaq iV per day. Assuming 5-days a week, it's about 5,000-7,000 a month and 60,000-84,000 a year." according to InsideEVs: "It would place the Enyaq iV among the top-selling EVs in Europe in 2020, and probably also one of the tops in 2021. If the company works seven days a week, it could be 7,000-10,000 a month or 84,000-120,000 a year. Even at 50,000 in 2021, it would be a great achievement, especially since there is now growing competition in the segment, including "friendly-fire" from the Volkswagen ID.4."   https://insideevs.com/news/481562/skoda-plans-produce-between-250-350-enyaq-iv-daily/   WHERE EXACTLY DOES JOE BIDEN PLAN TO PUT 550,000 EV CHARGING STATIONS? "As it stands, you can get most places with the existing EV infrastructure we have, but if you’re trying to get to your cousin’s place in rural Idaho or North Dakota, you’re going to have a tough time. Hopefully by making electric car chargers as ubiquitous as gas stations, that range anxiety and usability problem will disappear entirely. With more charging stations, we can shrink the so-called electron deserts." says Jalopnik: "Biden has expressed a desire for the U.S. to be competitive with China on electric vehicle adoption, largely out of support for the many automakers with manufacturing facilities based here. China already has half a million public EV plugs in place, so this 2030 expansion plan would only get us caught up to China’s 2021 levels."   https://jalopnik.com/where-exactly-does-joe-biden-plan-to-put-550-000-ev-cha-18460967673   2021 PORSCHE TAYCAN 4S GETS 10% MORE EPA RANGE "The EPA has the updated range estimates for the 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S, its midrange model now that the standard model Taycan has been announced. Surprisingly, the range jumped from 203 miles in 2020 to 227 miles of range this year, a gain of over 10%." reports electrek: "Porsche simply did not use the monster 21-inch wheel option in its EPA calculation in which it chooses the worst case scenario to report. Apparently, the 2021 is the exact same car as the 2020 as far as the drivetrain is concerned. The only difference is that the high-drag 21-inch wheels were not reported from/to the EPA. That same source told us that almost no one buys those wheels, as most people stick with the 19s or 20s. Those huge wheels come standard on the Taycan Turbo S so the calculation stands there. The 20-inch wheels apparently make the Taycan over 10% more efficient, which is seemingly a huge gain. In the case of the Taycan 4S, it added 24 miles of range. The 19-inch wheels/tires are apparently even more efficient."   Real world tests all show late 200's, with 19 inch wheels at highway speeds you can get close to 300 miles.   Porsche are clearly under promising and over-delivering.   https://electrek.co/2021/01/21/2021-porsche-taycan-4s-gets-10-more-epa-range-we-tell-you-why/   TESLA'S INFOTAINMENT UPGRADE GETS 40% DISCOUNT "Tesla cut the cost of its infotainment upgrade by 40% about a week after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked it to recall nearly 159,000 cars due to a defective touchscreen. While the upgrade brings an array of new features while deleting older ones, it also fixes the problem identified by the agency." according to Autoblog: "Owners of a Model S or a Model X built before March 2018 can buy the infotainment upgrade, which the firm calls simply Infotainment Upgrade, via the Tesla App. It adds in-car video streaming, Caraoke and Tesla Arcade, among other functions, and it removes the AM, FM and Sirius XM radios. Significantly, it also includes a faster and more responsive touchscreen that doesn't rely on the faulty hardware identified in the NHTSA's findings. Tesla charged $2,500 for the upgrade until January 2021, when it quietly slashed the price to $1,500. If a recall is issued, Tesla will replace the touchscreen in affected cars, but it likely won't load it with games and connectivity."   Deadline to fight NHTSA judgement is Jan 27.   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/22/tesla-recall-infotainment-upgrade-price-cut/   TESLA TO ADD CELL MANUFACTURING IN BERLIN "Tesla has been given the go-ahead to start preliminary work for the battery cell manufacturing facility that will supply the Berlin Gigafactoy. According to BZ-Berlin, the news comes as a surprise to the Brandenburg government, which oversees the location for Giga Berlin." says Torque NEws: "Tesla hasn’t submitted an official application to build a battery cell manufacturing facility to the Brandenburg authority. However, the preliminary permit comes in the way of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics. The Ministry’s Chief Peter Altmaier bundled the applications of multiple companies looking into battery cell manufacturing and submitted them to the EU Commission. In the meantime, the ministry has also granted Tesla to start initial work for the plant."   Capacity is 100GWh per year. Well above 35GWh in Nevada and every other cell gigafactory in the world. At 75kWh per pack (Long Range Model Y pack), 100GWh is 1.3 million cars a year.   https://www.torquenews.com/11826/tesla-gets-preliminary-approval-get-state-aid-and-add-battery-manufacturing-facility-giga-berlin   TESLA MODEL 3 AND MODEL Y’S ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION "An update to the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y’s Owner’s Manual recently revealed fresh hints about a possible adjustable suspension system for the all-electric sedan and crossover. The features were teased in a new icon on the vehicles’ infotainment system that resembles the air suspension icon used by the company in its flagship EVs like the Tesla Model X. " repotrs Teslarati: "The new hints on the Model 3 and Model Y’s adjustable suspension features were shared online by noted Tesla owner-hacker @Greentheonly, who noted that the changes were rolled out with update 2020.48.26, better known as the 2020 Holiday Update. Considering that the new icon is already in the Owner’s Manual for the two vehicles, there’s a fair chance that the features may be rolled out soon"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-model-y-adjustable-suspension-update-owners-manual/   MAJORITY OF EV OWNERS ARE INTENT ON PURCHASING ANOTHER ONE IN THE FUTURE "Among the early adopters who own an EV, 82% say they “definitely will” consider purchasing another in the future, according to the inaugural J.D. Power US Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study. However, satisfaction with the current ownership experience is a key influencer for whether owners will purchase the same brand of EV again." repotrs Green Car Congress: "The study finds that 95% of EV owners whose overall ownership satisfaction exceeds 900 points say they will purchase another EV. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of these owners say they “definitely will” repurchase the same brand. However, likelihood to repurchase the same brand lessens as satisfaction declines. Show #873   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 21st August 2020. SERIES PRODUCTION OF VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 BEGINS From VW: Volkswagen’s electric offensive continues to gather speed: Series production of the brand’s first all-electric SUV, the ID.4, gets underway in Zwickau. The world premiere of the ID.4 follows at the end of September. Preparations to roll out the electric SUV at international level are also in full swing. Pre-production of the ID.4 has already started at the Anting plant in China, the Chattanooga site will start the ID.4 production in 2022. The SUV will initially be launched with rear-wheel drive, while an electric all-wheel drive version will be added a later date.   PushEVs points out: "The Volkswagen ID.4 made in Europe is using the new NCM 712 battery cells made by LG Chem in Poland. Later on, the made in USA version will get its battery cells from SK Innovation and the made in China version will probably get its battery cells from CATL. Made with very energy dense and affordable NCM 712 batteries – that cost below 100 euros per kWh -, the expensive Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 will be extremely profitable electric cars (on average way more than 15.000 euros per unit). That’s why Volkswagen will only try to sell the cheaper electric triplets (UpMiiGo) made on the old MQB platform when it’s required to reach EU emissions targets. This year thanks to the COVID-19 lockdowns, ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car sales dropped a lot, this is great but also means that Volkswagen won’t have to sell as many electric cars as it was previously expected. The very profitable ID.3 and ID.4 will be enough to comply with EU emissions regulations and VW doesn’t need to sell any more triplets this year."   https://pushevs.com/2020/08/20/series-production-of-volkswagen-id-4-begins-in-zwickau/   TESLA IS ROLLING OUT SUSPENSION UPDATE WITH REAL-TIME VISUALIZATION "Tesla has started rolling out a new suspension update with real-time visualization of the suspension for Model S and Model X vehicles equipped with the new fully-adaptive damping suspension." says Fred at Electrek: "Model S and Model X vehicles have long been equipped with a standard “smart” air suspension, but when Tesla launched the new Raven Model S and Model X vehicles last year, it updated the vehicles with a new adaptive suspension."   Tesla said: "You can now see a real-time visualization of how the suspension system is dynamically adjusting each wheel’s damping to account for changing road conditions. Tap “Show Suspension Data” to get even more real-time information. Adaptive Suspension Damping now has an ADVANCED setting that allows you to set custom levels of Ride Comfort and Handling in addition to the existing COMFORT, AUTO, and SPORT settings. We have simplified the Tesla suspension control logic to better support both temporary and more permanent heights. If Ride Heights is manually adjusted to High or Very High, your car now automatically lowers after you drive a short distance. For snowy or off-road conditions, tap “Keep” next to the Ride Height slider to keep the height at High or Very High until you reach the maximum allowed speed. For steep driveways or places where you repeatedly need a higher ride height, tap “Always Auto-Raise at this location.” This feature will raise suspension to the saved height when re-entering the location.”   https://electrek.co/2020/08/21/tesla-suspension-update-real-time-visualization/   TESLA’S AUTOPILOT TO BENEFIT FROM UK PUSH FOR AUTONOMOUS DRIVING "The UK government already has said that by spring 2021, hands-free driving could become legal on the country's roads. In preparation for this transition, officials and pertinent organizations are now initiating a deeper dive into the technology." says Tesmanian: "The call for evidence will look at the Automated Lane Keeping System (ALKS)--an automated technology that can take over control of the vehicle at low speeds, keeping it in the lane on motorways. Following the approval of ALKS Regulation in June 2020 by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)--of which the UK is a member--the technology is likely to be available in cars entering the UK market from Spring 2021. The government is acting now to ensure that regulation is ready where necessary for its introduction."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/hands-free-driving-could-be-made-legal-on-uk-roads-by-spring-2021   CHINESE EV MAKER NIO LAUNCHES BATTERY LEASING SERVICE "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio Inc has launched a battery leasing service that will allow drivers to buy an EV without owning the battery pack - one of the most expensive EV components - thereby lowering the starting price of its cars." reports Reuters: "The service, called “battery as a service” (BaaS), entails drivers paying a monthly rental fee for use of the batteries. The cheapest Nio car after subsidies is now an ES6 sport-utility vehicle (SUV) priced 273,600 yuan ($39,553) without ownership of the battery pack, versus 343,600 yuan including the pack. Nio operates 143 battery-swapping stations around China, where drivers can swap spent battery packs for fully charged replacements.  Nio’s battery packs are the same shape and size across its lineup, which is comprised of three SUVs. EV models from peer BAIC BluePark New Energy Technology Co Ltd also have standardised batteries."   https://in.reuters.com/article/nio-battery-electric/chinese-ev-maker-nio-launches-battery-leasing-service-eyes-global-market-idINKBN25G0V4?il=0   ELECTRIC I-PACE SUV GETS A CHEAPER MODEL... FOR GERMANY Jaguar is working on a new entry-level I-PACE but it could be a Europe-only affair. It looks to be a limited-edition model, which is strange considering it makes less power and costs less than the full-fat model, called the ‘EV320 SE’. That numbers refers to the metric horsepower, which translates to 238kW. " according to stuff.co.nz: "Jag reckons the SUV will hit 100kmh in 6.4 seconds, compared to 4.8 for the existing EV400. Velocity tops out 180kmh versus 200kmh but range is an identical 480km. Being a special edition, the EV320 gets optional extras thrown on as standard. That includes 20-inch wheels, an electrically-opening boot, electric heated mirrors, LED headlights, 14-way adjustable leather sports seats, driving assists and a pair of touchscreens on the centre console. The UK isn’t getting this model, with currently confirmed countries including Germany and Norway."   https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/122514625/electric-ipace-suv-gets-a-cheaper-model-for-germany   BRITISH ARMY TRIALS HYBRID-POWERED MILITARY VEHICLES "Hybrid technology is being tested by the British Army in two of its armoured vehicles as a way to improve sustainability and enhance stealth capabilities." says the Daily Mail: "The innovative hybrid electric-drive system will be developed by Coventry-based NP Aerospace along with General Dynamics UK, Supacat and Magtec. Alongside delivering multiple technical and operational enhancements, the introduction of hybrid technology will ultimately reduce the Army's reliance on fossil fuels"   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8646565/British-Army-trials-hybrid-powered-military-vehicles-improve-stealth.html   UK SAFARI RE-OPENS USING ELECTRIC VEHICLES "" Hyundai is helping leading family Theme Park and Zoo, Chessington World of Adventures Resort get going again by providing electric cars for the resort's a brand-new Safari Adventure VIP Experience." says Motor1: "In a first for a UK attraction, guests will be driven by a park ranger in a fleet of fully-electric Kona crossovers, travelling among zebras, giraffes and more in the resort's African animal Wanyama Reserve."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/439716/uk-safari-re-opens-using-electric-vehicles/   LYFT JOINS EV100 "Lyft, the ride-sharing company from the US, has joined EV100 by announcing its commitment to reaching 100% electric vehicles on its platform by 2030." says Smart Transport website: "The company is estimating that making the switch will save drivers on its platform around $10 billion in reduced vehicle operating expenses. EV100 is an initiative by international non-profit The Climate Group, bringing together over 70 companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and making electric transport the new normal by 2030.  Other members include Lime, AstraZeneca, and Ingka Group (IKEA)."   https://www.smarttransport.org.uk/news/latest-news/lyft-joins-ev100-and-commits-to-full-ev-switch-by-2030   RENAULT INTRODUCES ZOE IN SOUTH KOREA "Renault, through its Renault Samsung Motors subsidiary (owned in 80.1% by Renault and 19.9% by Samsung), is introducing in South Korea its flagship electric car Renault ZOE." reports InsideEVs: "After deducting generous subsidies of about 11.9 million won ($10,075), the effective prices are from 28.1 to 32.1 million won ($23,900 to $27,300). We can guess that Renault targets to sell at least a few thousand ZOE per year in the country, which might become the largest export market for ZOE outside Europe."   https://insideevs.com/news/439808/renault-zoe-south-korea/   ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES TRIPLE IN AUSTRALIA "Sales of electric vehicles in Australia tripled in 2019 despite a lack of government support, according to the industry’s peak body. The country’s network of electric vehicle charging stations was also growing, the Electric Vehicle Council’s annual report found, including a rise in the number of faster charging stations" writes The Guardian: " There are now 28 electric models on sale, with eight priced below $65,000. Six more were due to arrive before the end of 2021, including two priced below $50,000, the council’s report said. The Morrison government promised a national electric vehicle strategy would be finalised by the middle of this year, but the policy has been delayed. The prime minister, Scott Morrison, last year accused Labor of wanting to “end the weekend” and force people out of four-wheel drives."   Mein Urlaub mit dem ID.3 https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/mein-urlaub-mit-dem-id3-herbert-diess/?trackingId=%2Fp6xj%2FhYvRFRWxMENi8%2FbA%3D%3D   Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group. Vacation trips with modern electric cars are already working really well today. The cars offer so much comfort and drive so confidently that the vacation can begin with great serenity even with the vacation trip. The charging infrastructure between Munich and Lake Garda was also well developed, only the charging stations will have to be displayed more precisely on our navigation systems in the future - there is currently a discrepancy of around 200 meters with some. Many people saw the vehicle live for the first time during my trip. I was really pleased with the reactions. Show #839   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 14th July 2020. BMW STARTS EV OFFENSIVE WITH IX3 "The BMW iX3 is the brand’s first electric vehicle targeted at a sweet spot of the premium market: the midsize SUV segment, where it will compete with models such as the Jaguar I-Pace and forthcoming Tesla Model Y." says Christian at Automotive News Europe: "The iX3, which debuts in China later this year and in Europe in early 2021, previews BMW's upcoming EV offensive that will include two more models next year, the i4 sedan and the larger iNEXT crossover. The iX3 is the first BMW to use the automaker's flexible architecture that can underpin combustion engine, plug-in hybrid and battery-powered cars. This allows BMW to produce all three variants on the same assembly line."   188 prismatic NMC 811 cells Battery 518kg 180kph top speed Current-excited synchronous electric motors (VW use permanent magnet synchronous motor which is lighter and more efficient but uses more rare earth materials, Tesla Model 3/Y and the front motor in the S & X use a form of those called permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motors ...e-tron and EQC plus S&X rear motors are induction motors which have very high torque at low speeds)   "When the electric SUV will later go on sale in Europe, BMW is calling for prices starting just under 70,000 euros." says electrive: "For the high base price the iX3 is comparatively well equipped. The standard equipment already includes a metallic paint finish, 3-zone automatic climate control with auxiliary heating and air conditioning functions, automatic tailgate operation, the “Driving Assist Professional” and LED headlights. Aerodynamically optimised 19-inch rims are fitted ex works, while the “Impressive” equipment line features 20-inch rims. This equipment also includes acoustic glazing, the head-up display and sports seats."   Jalopnik were less complimentary: "The Tesla Model S started production in 2012, and showed that the world was ready for a full-on, from-the-ground-up electric car. One that wasn’t just the shell of a gas-powered car with some batteries jammed in. And yet, some 8 years later, BMW is still facing up against Tesla with a shell of a gas-powered car with some batteries jammed in."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/bmw-starts-ev-offensive-ix3?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter   https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/14/bmw-ix3-to-cost-e70000/   https://jalopnik.com/bmw-s-most-serious-new-electric-car-is-kind-of-lame-1844375848   PATENTS REVEAL DACIA SPRING: THE MOST AFFORDABLE EV IN EUROPE "When Carlos Ghosn said he wanted a small and affordable electric car to sell all over the world, Renault gave him the K-ZE City. The urban vehicle has a 26.8 kWh pack, good for 271 km of range under the NEDC cycle. Europe will finally have its version of that affordable EV when the Dacia Spring is put for sale in early 2021, and these patents show it will not change much compared to the concept." says InsideEVs: "Primarily based on the Renault Kwid developed for India and Brazil. In China, its most expensive version, sold by 71,800 RMB ($10,246, at the current exchange rate), is slightly taller, at 1,52 m (59,8 in), probably due to roof rails. It also has a mid-spec option for 66,800 RMB ($9,533). The entry-level K-ZE costs 61,800 RMB – or $8,819 "   https://insideevs.com/news/433930/patents-reveal-affordable-dacia-spring/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles   ELECTRIFY AMERICA INTRODUCES NEW PROPOSAL FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGER EMOJI Ahead of World Emoji Day on July 17, Electrify America announced a new proposal to introduce the first-ever “EV Charger” emoji for smartphone keyboards. The proposal was officially submitted for consideration to the Unicode Consortium, the governing body for emoji creation. After offering an “Electric Vehicle with Charger” emoji on World Emoji Day 2019 and receiving a decline from the Unicode Consortium, the EV charging company felt strongly enough about accurately representing EV chargers and the future of transportation through emoji to create and submit a new design. The new “EV Charger” emoji design takes feedback from the committee into account, streamlining the emoji to focus on solely the charger.   https://media.electrifyamerica.com/en-us/releases/104   STARD WRITES HISTORY WITH FIRST VICTORY FOR AN ELECTRIC RALLYCROSS CAR STARD, based near Vienna, Austria, is a company familiar with making history in the alternative technology motorsport arena. But, on Sunday July 12, together with rally star Manfred Stohl, STARD made its biggest entry into the history books yet by claiming the first ever victory for a rallycross car using a fully-electric powertrain. The REVelution electric kit for Projekt E produces 450kW (613bhp) combined power, 1000Nm of instantaneous torque with a top speed of 240km/h from three high performance road car electric motors, using a four-wheel drive system and two-speed transmission. Last weekend at the Kakucs circuit in Hungary, in a round of the Hungarian Rallycross Championship, STARD ran a Ford Fiesta ElectRX, the debut appearance for a fully-electric rallycross car in its intended environment.   BRITISH BATTERY STORAGE SECTOR TAKES A ‘BIG STEP’ AS MINISTERS REMOVE SIZE LIMIT BARRIERS "Barriers have been removed allowing for battery storage projects five times the size as the current limit in Britain, in a move hailed as a “significant, positive and well-timed” step. Secondary legislation was passed by ministers today (14 July) that will allow for projects above 50MW in England and 350MW in Wales." sayx energy-storage.news: "Head of markets at National Grid ESO, Kayte O’Neill said that how the company operates the grid is changing as record levels of renewable energy sources generate more and more of Great Britain’s power. Currently there is 4GW of storage project in planning in Great Britain according to BEIS, which collectively could power 6 million homes. Already, there is 1GW of battery storage in operation.   The gov said: “Removing barriers in the planning system will help us build bigger and more powerful batteries, creating more green-collar jobs and a smarter electricity network.”   https://www.energy-storage.news/news/british-battery-sector-takes-a-big-step-as-ministers-remove-barriers   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC ACHIEVES RECORD SALES IN JUNE "In March Hyundai started the deliveries of the Kona Electric made at its European manufacturing plant, in Czech Republic. Back then European production was at 150 Kona Electrics per day and Hyundai planed to produce 30.000 electric cars this year in Europe." says PushEVs: "Hyundai also expected that by delivering 80.000 electric cars to European customers this year, it would become the biggest provider of zero-emission vehicles in Europe in 2020.  in June Hyundai managed to sell 5.627 units of the Kona Electric outside its domestic market, which represents a sales record for this automaker. It seems that the  production of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars was much more affected by the lockdowns than the production of electric cars. One possible explanation is that since electric cars are simpler to build and require far fewer parts, supplier list is also much shorter and resuming production is always less problematic."   https://pushevs.com/2020/07/14/hyundai-kona-electric-achieves-record-sales-in-june/   SUBSIDIES SLASH EV LEASE COSTS IN GERMANY, FRANCE "Car buyers in Germany and France can now get their hands on a brand-new electric vehicle for less than the typical cost of a mobile-phone contract. Thanks to newly generous subsidies, some are even free." writes Automotive News Europe: "Shoppers have swarmed virtual showrooms in Germany and France -- the region's two largest passenger-car markets -- after their national governments boosted electric-vehicle incentives to stimulate demand. Their purchase subsidies are now among the most favorable in the world, according to BloombergNEF. The state support is allowing Autohaus Koenig, a dealership chain with more than 50 locations across Germany, to advertise a lease for the battery-powered Renault Zoe that is entirely covered by subsidies. In France, where the government raised subsidies to 7,000 euros per car this year, customers can lease the Zoe from 79 euros a month."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/subsidies-slash-ev-lease-costs-germany-france   TESLA’S MODEL Y STRATEGY SHOWS THAT LONG RANGE EVS ARE THE NEW STANDARD   "Over the weekend, Tesla, through its CEO, Elon Musk, revealed that the Model Y Standard Range RWD will no longer be produced. In its place will be a Long Range RWD variant that Musk states will have a range that’s significantly higher than 300 miles per charge. With this update, the message was clear: Tesla is intent on making Long Range versions of its vehicles as the new standard. " says TEslarati: "when Elon Musk confirmed that the Standard Range RWD version of the Model Y has been cancelled, he stated that the variant’s range would be “unacceptably low.”. The cancellation of the Model Y Standard Range RWD also seems to be a way for the company to keep the Model 3 Standard Range Plus as the de facto entry level Tesla for some time. After all, the Model Y Standard Range RWD was initially listed with a price of $39,000, which is very close to the Model 3 Standard Range Plus’ $37,990. By removing the Model Y Standard Range, Tesla could ensure that the Model 3 Standard Range Plus will remain a bang for your buck sedan."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-long-range-rwd-price-elon-musk/   [mention for Premium Partners]   You can listen to all 838 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRIGHTSMITHGROUP.COM – FOR CLEANTECH TALENT (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NEW! Show #809   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th June 2020. CITROËN Ë-SPACETOURER TO HIT MARKETS IN 2020 "PSA is accelerating its push into commercial electric vehicles as Citroën has now announced that it will also launch the compact van Spacetourer as a BEV – called the ë-SpaceTourer – by the end of the year." says electrive: "Peugeot will follow with the sister model Peugeot e-Traveller scheduled to hit the markets before the end of 2020. Both use the same technology with an electric motor of 100 kW, and there is a choice of two battery versions with 50 or 75 kWh. The latter enables a WLTP range of up to 330 kilometres. The third electric van in the group, the Opel Zafira Life, is announced for early 2021. Like its commercial vehicle counterparts Peugeot e-Expert, Citroën ë-Jumpy and Opel Vivaro-e, the Zafira Life also uses the well-known PSA drive. The individual leather seats in the second row can be turned, and a table can be folded out. The particularly strongly tinted rear windows are intended to provide the necessary privacy, for example, for chauffeur services and VIP shuttles."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/12/citroen-e-spacetourer-to-hit-markets-in-2020/   VOLKSWAGEN ROLLS OUT ID. CHARGER Volkswagen has started sale of the ID. Charger for quick and easy home charging for electric vehicles. The wallbox can be ordered online or from Volkswagen dealers in eight European countries2. The first boxes were delivered to customers recently. At an introductory price of €399. The ID. Charger will be gradually introduced in three versions. All have a charging capacity of up to 11kW, a permanently mounted Type 2 charging cable and integrated DC residual current protection for maximum safety. The two top models – the ID. Charger Connect and ID. Charger Pro – will also be fully connected and can be easily managed via smartphone. Customers can therefore control charging processes, and enjoy the advantages of practical functions such as remote maintenance, managing access via a charge card and regular software updates. The ID. Charger Pro also offers an integrated electricity meter that can be used, for example, to bill electricity costs for company car drivers.   TESLA POISED TO ROLL OUT SPEED LIMIT RECOGNITION AND ROUNDABOUT SUPPORT "Tesla is poised to improve its Autopilot functionality and its Full Self-Driving suite by rolling out speed limit recognition and roundabout support worldwide soon." says Teslarati: " Tesla hacker @greentheonly posted a tweet on the evening of June 11 describing the company’s intention to release the upcoming and highly-anticipated Autopilot improvements. It is unknown when the updates will roll out to Tesla owners, but the noted Tesla hacker indicated they would likely be coming soon, and that the features would be released worldwide. Tesla seems to be utilizing 3D-rendered icons for the upcoming features. This suggests that speed limit recognition may be integrated directly in the in-car displays of the company’s vehicles, similar to stop lights, stop signs, and other vehicles on the road."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-speed-limit-recognition-roundabout-support-worldwide-release-date/   RENAULT ENDS BATTERY LEASING IN SPAIN "Renault is slowly removing the option to lease the battery from its electric cars. First it was the UK, now it’s time to remove this option in Spain." reports PushEVs: "The battery of the new generation Renault ZOE is made with NCM 712 cells from LG Chem and the cost at the battery pack level is already below 100 euros per kWh. When compared to Clio, its ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) counterpart, the ZOE looks extremely overpriced."   Renault ZOE Life R110 with ZE 40 battery: 29.128 euros Renault Clio Life 53 kW: 10.267 euros   Renault ZOE Zen R135 with ZE 50 battery: 32.888 euros Renault Clio Zen E-TECH (hybrid) 104 kW: 19.582 euros   https://pushevs.com/2020/06/11/renault-ends-battery-leasing-in-spain/   ELECTRIC SHUTTLES TO START SERVICE IN SOUTH SACRAMENTO "The first of three new GreenPower EV Star shuttles will be put into service beginning Monday, 15 Jun 2020 as part of Electrify America’s more than $40 million Green Cities investments in Sacramento. The vehicles are being integrated into SacRT’s highly popular SmaRT Ride on-demand micro-shuttle program servicing the Franklin-South Sacramento communities." says Green Car Congress: "The GreenPower EV Star shuttles were assembled in Porterville, California and retrofitted with a unique side door configuration added to facilitate shuttle access for those with special needs. Electrify America fully subsidized the costs of the shuttles, the DC fast-charging infrastructure to support them, and the retrofit costs."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/06/20200612-sac.html   DPD SWITZERLAND GETS ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH 680-KWH BATTERY "DPD has purchased a Volvo electric truck with unprecedented range to use in its operations in Switzerland. The France-based parcel carrier has bought a Futuricum truck, based on a model by Volvo and developed by Designwerk, which offers battery capacity of 680kwH and a range of up to 760km (472 miles)." reports eDelivery.net: "Supplied via green-generated energy in DPD’s depot, the vehicle saves around 96 kilograms of CO2 per 100km, corresponding to 76.8 tons per year. Work has begun on the vehicle, with delivery anticipated for mid-December 2020.While DPD makes wide use of electric vans for shorter last-mile trips, using battery-powered vehicles for long distances and large payloads has generally been difficult because the size of the battery required takes up significant space and weight within the vehicle."   https://edelivery.net/2020/06/dpd-deploy-volvo-long-range-electric-truck-switzerland/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   Pete Glass Frankly if it can’t match the original 2012 Volt or Opel/Vauxhall Ampera’s 35miles or so, it’s completely pointless and the latest Kuga Phev or Prius Prime barely scrape past that. Now I hear of talk of 60miles plus from Merc [?], could be good for some people but only if they have home charging. Next generation Phevs must have rapid or at less semi-rapid charging [22kW] to be really worthwhile and now only the Mitsi Outlander does this.  Now here I emphasise and rant … if you don’t have home charging then a low miles Phev really is utterly pointless, faffing about hunting for a public charger for a few miles   Rich Fowler I find that the Clarity's 35-50 miles of range works pretty well for me for now, given where I live and how I use the car, but obviously, that's not going to work for everyone. Some people can get away with even less range than that, and some will want even more. Having less than 35 miles of range in the winter is annoying where I live, where things are a little spaced out and suburban. And it's just enough battery where I can get it fully charged up on a 120v 15A circuit overnight   Tom James In response to QOTW regarding PHEV range, I think that once you have a range of between 30-40 miles on full electric, it renders PHEVs unnecessary, as most people’s daily driving will fit into this range bracket. So one might as well buy a full EV with the extra 100 or so miles of range for the rare occasion that one drives a longer distance. As an Outlander PHEV owner (which gets 30 miles EV range on a good day), it only took around 2 months of ownership to realise I wasn’t using any petrol day to day and was carrying around an engine and fuel tank for no reason. I have regretted not going for a BEV ever since, now I have to steal my wife’s Ioniq EV!   Alan Northcutt, waco, tx USA answer:  0 miles because plug-in hybrids are a waste of resources now. they offer few e-miles, emit tailpipe and carbon pollution, require much maintenance, malfunction more frequently.  with the growing charge network, they are unnecessary and only delay the transition to battery-electrics.  analogous to natural gas, they are not a "bridge vehicle."   and they only delay the transition to reach "net zero" emissions by 2050 (IPCC)   Dan from Canada Ideal: 2 x your total daily commute, in a car with a heat pump - would allow for EV mode for 100% of local driving, including chores, even in winter. Use gasoline (hybrid mode) only for longer weekend/vacation drives. Good: 1.5 x your  total daiy commute, no heat pump - allows for EV mode for all local driving, including chores, except on some winter days. Again, hybrid mode for longer drives. That’s our situation with our Hyundai  Ioniq PHEV - “as EV as we can afford”. Marginal: 1 x your total daily commute - but may be actually good enough if you don’t need the  car for chores or you can charge at work. Too low: less than your total daily commute, but may be good enough if you can charge at work.   Rene Schneider The battery of the plug in hybrid car should cover the daily commute and you have to have the ability to charge at home (or at work), to make the driver happy. This means an absolute minimum of 50–60km standard battery range for a plug-in, better 80–100km (to cover for winter degrade). Otherwise the driver soon gets too lazy to plug in often enough and experience the joy of EV. Fast charge: What I most missed the last years was, to be able to „fast" charge my plug-in within less than an hour. Often it was not worthwhile to use a charger when you had an hour break somewhere. Strong EV motor: Key for the plug in is a strong enough EV motor (ours has 100kW). So to experience the joy of EV, and that the fossil gobbler has not to kick in regularly.   Joe Maher I say a PHEV should have 80 to 100kms range. 24kwh battery should do it. I have the outlander and the 40does most days but maybe twice a week I have to do 80 to 100 in a day and I hate dipping into the tank.   Mike H We bought a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid almost exactly 1 year ago. It's got a 16KWh battery (~12KWh useable) but is pretty heavy (~5000lbs). It's range is supposed to be about 52km, but I live in the mountains and my commute goes up a really big hill. Driving around in the city where it's flat, it'll go 60+km, but going to work and back (30km round trip) uses about 75% in the summer and 95% in the winter. In the year we've owned it, we've put just 5 tanks of gas (~250 litres) while doing almost 20,000km. It's insane how little gas we've used and on longer trips where there's charging available. In fact with cheap zero carbon hydro electricity here in BC and high gas prices, I figure we've saved about $1,800 in fuel!   patdbean The average commute in the UK at least is about 38 miles , so a good hybrid range is 40 to 50 miles that way , as long as you can charge at home and at work that should be enough to keep "most" hybrids  on electric  "most" of the time.   Bimi I think we should demand a minimum of 60km WLTP / real world range on hybrids. Having driven ev for 6 years now i see that more and more friends/people buy plugins and they like driving on EV mode so much that everywhere they go they will plug it in and charge it. This results in less charging spots available for those that really need it.   Steven Bollinger Question of the week: If hybrid cars had enough all-electric range so that their owners NEVER burned any gasoline, that would be perfect, in my humble opinion.   Paul F Enough range to do all city driving so 70ks would be perfect for a plug in hybrid. ICE cars are sort of economical at constant speed but they are very inefficient at start stop. Also it does not take much power to keep a car at speed but it takes a lot of energy to accelerate the Briggs and Stratton hybrid concept from 1980 proves that an air cooled lawnmower engine can keep a car moving   alan baker On question of week, PHEV's should be able to do  min 30 miles on battery to qualify for grant. Had a niro PHEV for about 18 mths  and found that I could do the majority of my local journeys on the battery, but is was nice to have engine as a back up because the Charge points in rural Wales is very poor   Cameron Hall 50 miles on the battery would probably be my minimum.  Not that I would ever buy a hybrid car,  way too many moving parts.   LTK  • 1 week ago I had a Ford PHEV with 21 mile EV range & got gas about once a month.  I charged at home every night.  I understand people with the Volt (42 EV Range) got gas about once every 3 months.  I’d like a PHEV with 80-100 mile EV range & get gas about once a year - only for road trips and to keep the ICE parts working.   Josh Pritt, Space Coast EV Drivers The 2nd generation Chevy Volt had a fairly perfect EV range of 52 miles.  That seemed to cover all of our daily driving and still have miles left to run an extra unplanned errand or two.  It even covers the weekend trips where we would go to the mall, movies, grocery store, visit parents and friends around town and still come home with 2 or 3 miles left on the battery. I would say any new plug in hybrid would have to have at least 52 miles range, otherwise they are starting out many years BEHIND a car that came out in 2015.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Tell me about a conversation you had with someone where you introduced them to EVs   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #686   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 3rd February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to three new Patrons!   A new PRODUCER ROB SHAW   A new PRODUCER WESLEY ELLIS   A new PRODUCER LEO KUYUNZHI   And an even bigger ‘thank you’ to those who have ended their support for now, Barry Peniston and Zack Hurst from EV-Resource.com   HUMMER ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK: EVERYTHING WE KNOW "The GMC Hummer EV electric pickup truck will officially debut this May, but we already have a fair amount of info on the electric truck. Here are the details released thus far on what's likely to be General Motors' first production electric truck." says Eric at InsideEVs: "GMC says that it will fully debut the Hummer electric pickup truck on May 20, 2020. Not all specs are known though. The specs that GMC did release include: 1,000 HP, 11,500 pound-feet of torque, 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.  The first deliveries of the Hummer electric pickup truck are set for Fall 2021. This is likely a moving timeline though, as electric vehicle production often seems to get tied up with some sort of constraints or setbacks."   https://insideevs.com/reviews/396368/hummer-electric-truck-specs-debut/   RENAULT ZOE CURRENT FASTEST SELLING USED CAR The Renault ZOE has retained its title as the fastest selling used car in the UK, with the 2016 variant taking the top spot in the first review of the Auto Trader Fastest Selling Index of the year. The result adds further weight to the prediction from automotive analysts that 2020 is set to be the year of the electric car.   The latest figures showed that the French city car has the potential to leave forecourts in just 25 days.   RENAULT ZOE HAD RECORD SALES IN JANUARY "Last month in France the Renault ZOE was the third best selling car with 5.331 units delivered, only behind the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars PEUGEOT 208 and Renault Clio." reports Pedro at PushEVs: "To the 5.331 units sold to private buyers, we can add 140 more that were sold to companies, making a total of 5.471 new Renault ZOE units sold in France last month. Last year Renault sold more than 46.000 units of the ZOE worldwide, but didn’t reach the full production capacity of 60.000 units. However, due to more stricter EU emission standards starting this year, Renault expects to incrementally increase annual production capacity until reaching 120.000 units by 2022"   Also 2,537 Peugeot e-208's we sold (1,187 demo cars and 732 private sales), that's 1 in 4 Peugeot 208's. Of the 5,331 Zoe's sold in January, 2,803 were to private buyers.   https://pushevs.com/2020/02/03/renault-zoe-record-sales-in-january/   TESLA MODEL S PLAID VERSUS PORSCHE TAYCAN: MATCHUP EXPECTED NEXT WEEK   "Rumors suggest that the Tesla Model S Plaid will go up against the Porsche Taycan as soon as next week. Motor Trend will conduct the testing of the matchup we've all been waiting for. Will the hottest Tesla ever come out on top? Or will it be the Taycan that triumphs?" says InsideEVs: "The specs for the Plaid version of the Model S are unknown, but what we do know is that Tesla will actually offer this hot Model S to the public starting in October or November 2020. Ahead of that, it seems Tesla wants to show just how capable the car is and, as such, is sending one to Motor Trend to pit it up against the Taycan (presumably the Turbo S variant). Tesla says the Plaid Model S will get a bigger battery than the other versions of the Model S, so perhaps its range will still be quite high."   I think the NORDSCHLEIFE reopens on Saturday 7th March. That's not to say it couldn't be booked for a special event but it's currently clsoed.   HOW TO ACTIVATE TESLA DYNO MODE "Tesla Dyno Mode can be activated in three easy steps for owners looking to test performance of their all-electric vehicle on a dynamometer and in a controlled setting. Tesla owner and Drag Times YouTuber Brooks Weisblat posted a video on how to turn on the Dyno Mode on a Model 3 and see how the secret mode affected the car’s performance." reports Teslarati: "With the Dyno Mode on the vehicle’s traction control is disabled, stability control is disabled, as well as automatic emergency braking."   https://www.teslarati.com/how-to-activate-tesla-dyno-mode-3-steps/   Bjorn Nyland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx_MR9fjmjw   GLOBAL EV SALES FOR 2019 NOW IN: TESLA MODEL 3 TOTALLY DOMINATED According to the EV Sales Blog, some over 279,000 plug-in cars were sold in December, 4% less than a year ago. While the last couple of months were challenging due to significant drops in China, the overall result for 2019 is positive: almost 2,210,000 (up 10% year-over-year). Moreover, the average plug-in market share improved from 2.1% to 2.5% (or 1 in 40 new cars). Most of the volume comes from all-electric cars (74%!), which also improved its position by 5% year-over-year, while plug-in hybrids (26%) declined.  The Tesla Model 3 set new all-time sales records: 53,742 for a single month and over 300,000 for the year (300,885 according to Tesla). The second-best last year (111,047), with also a personal monthly record of 21,963, is the BAIC EU-Series - the first non-Tesla model to exceed 20,000 in a single month."   https://insideevs.com/news/396177/global-ev-sales-december-2019/   PORSCHE TAYCAN NOW AVAILABLE WITH EXCLUSIVE MANUFAKTUR OPTIONS "As if Porsche didn't already offer enough options for the new electric Taycan, it's now applied the Exclusive Manufaktur treatment as it does with its more iconic petrol-powered models. New options can be had both inside and out, helping buyers to make their Taycan stand out without a sports exhaust system specify. " writes evo.co.uk: "The most significant option of the 90 available is the new Sport Design package, available in either gloss black, or carbon fibre. The package tweaks both front and rear bumpers for a more aggressive look, and will cost up to £3282 for the carbon fibre option on the range-topping Taycan Turbo S. If you’d like to see your initials every time you step in or out of your Taycan, £1900 will afford you customised, carbon fibre sill plates (also available in aluminium for marginally less).  Although power increases have been offered for previous models, none are yet to be launched for the all-electric Taycan. With its over-the-air updates, Tesla has proven that EVs can see such upgrades, however, so perhaps it’s something we might see in time."   https://www.evo.co.uk/saloons/202188/porsche-taycan-now-available-with-exclusive-manufaktur-options   WRIGHT ELECTRIC WORKS ON LARGE ELECTRIC PASSENGER PLANE "The electric aircraft start-up Wright Electric has started to develop the electric propulsion system for a 186-seat electric aircraft called Wright 1. Specifically, this involves a 1.5 MW electric motor and a 3-kilovolt inverter." reports electrive.com: "Designs haven’t been finalised, but the Wright 1 airliner will use distributed electric propulsion. The company is now starting to design and test about a dozen of the 1.5-megawatt motors. Wright is planning initial ground tests for 2021 and initial flight tests for 2023. The company expects Wright 1 to be ready for regular operation in 2030."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/02/wright-electric-works-on-large-electric-passenger-plane/   https://www.aviationtoday.com/2020/01/30/wright-electric-begins-1-5-mw-engine-development-program-186-seat-commercial-airliner/   TESLA NOW COVERS DEGRADATION IN MODEL S/X WARRANTY "Tesla has updated their warranty coverage for Model S and X cars, and it’s a mixed bag for owners. The warranty now explicitly covers battery degradation and capacity loss, guaranteeing that the battery will retain 70% capacity through the warranty period. But Tesla also removed their famous “infinite mile warranty” for battery and drive unit and replaced it with a limit of 150,000 miles — still plenty high for most (but not all) scenarios, but not “infinite.”" reports Electrek today: "Tesla explicitly stated that “changes to the performance of the battery due to software updates are NOT covered” under warranty."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/02/tesla-model-s-x-warranty-70-capacity-150k-mile/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.
