The Nissan Frontier started what promises to be a parade of all-new midsize pickup trucks over the course of the next year. General Motors has already started to sell its brand-new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Soon Ford will follow suit with its completely new 2024 Ford Ranger that we detailed for you last week. And Toyota has revealed its 2024 Toyota Tacoma, the completely revamped version of the sales leader in the segment. So how does the 2023 Nissan Frontier stack up in this flurry of activity on the midsize truck front? To find out, Co-Host Chris Teague put the Frontier through a series of grueling and practical tests in his home base of Maine. And he discovered that the V6-powered Frontier is not only a good choice among the current competitors but will also hold its own against the newcomers as they arrive in showrooms over the next several months. He'll share the details in this episode. While Chris Teague was wringing out the Nissan pickup, Host Jack Nerad took on a different challenge. He and his family used the 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid as their vehicle of choice to move his youngest daughter out of her college apartment. The trek involved about 500 miles of driving on freeways, rural roads, and city streets. Was the minivan able to swallow up all the accumulated possessions of a fourth-year college student? We'll have the answer for you coming up. Were you thinking of buying a low-priced Chevy Silverado battery-electric pickup when they come to market next year? Well, you might want to think again. There's a lot going on in EV Truckland these days, and we'll give you the details. Also in the news, two big names in performance cars are teaming up for what should a very exciting collaboration. We'll tell you what brands we're talking about and what their plans are coming up. And in the True Crime Files Automotive Edition, the highest German federal court has ruled that the companies responsible for Dieselgate owe their customers compensation. It could cost them tens of millions of dollars. We'll tell you more later in this episode. Our special guest this week is Brad Gieske, chief UX designer at Dodge. Infotainment is something we talk about a lot of the show because it is so important to so many of us. So we'll chat with Brad about the latest trends in vehicle entertainment and information. And we'll take a special look at the UX in the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 8th July. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. STELLANTIS MAKES 30 BILLION EURO WAGER ON ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET - Stellantis (STLA.MI), the world's No. 4 automaker, said on Thursday it plans to invest more than 30 billion euros ($35.54 billion) through 2025 on electrifying its vehicle lineup. The company, formed in January from the merger of Italian-American automaker Fiat Chrysler and France's PSA, said its strategy will be supported by five battery plants in Europe and North America as it gears up to compete with electric vehicle (EV) leader Tesla (TSLA.O) and other automakers globally. - Stellantis said it is targeting more than 70% of sales in Europe and over 40% in the United States to be low-emission vehicles - either battery or hybrid electric - by 2030. It aims to make the total cost of owning an EV equal to that of a gasoline-powered model by 2026. - Stellantis said it wants to secure more than 130 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity by 2025 and more than 260 GWh by 2030. It said it has signed memorandums of understanding with two lithium geothermal brine process partners in North America and Europe to ensure supplies of lithium, a critical raw material for batteries. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/stellantis-says-h1-margin-expected-top-annual-target-55-75-2021-07-08/ STELLANTIS TO SOURCE OVER 260 GWH IN EV BATTERY CAPACITY BY 2030 - Stellantis currently has two gigafactory projects, one in France and one in Germany, under its joint venture with Total, called Automotive Cells Company (ACC). Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares announced that it would also be building a gigaplant in Italy at its engine facility, and one in the US. - Stellantis said that its plans included dual battery chemistries, including a high energy-density option and a nickel cobalt-free alternative by 2024, with a solid-state battery technology introduction planned in 2026. - As part of its strategy, Stellantis is also aiming to reduce battery costs using its technical expertise and manufacturing synergies, with it targeting to reduce EV battery pack costs by over 40% from 2020 to 2024 and by more than an additional 20% by 2030. Original Source : https://www.spglobal.com/platts/en/market-insights/latest-news/electric-power/070821-stellantis-to-source-over-260-gwh-in-ev-battery-capacity-by-2030 AFTER SLOW START, STELLANTIS BETS BIG ON EVS - Just by mid-decade, said Tavares, the goal will be to have 55 plug-based vehicles in global showrooms: 40 battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, and another 15 plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, or PHEVs. - The PSA side of Stellantis, drawing on experience from core brands Citroën, Opel and Peugeot, is further ahead when it comes to electrification. In the U.S., the former Fiat Chrysler brands trail the competition. It currently offers no all-electric models and just two plug-ins, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan and the new Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The response to the 4xe has taken company officials by surprise, generating more than 20% of Wrangler sales since its April debut. Original Source : https://www.forbes.com/wheels/news/stellantis-ev-plans STELLANTIS DELAYS AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC CARS UNTIL 2026 - Stellantis EV Day 2021 was embarrassing. The 3 hour video presentation was all about putting together multiple nonsense commercials and delaying the introduction of affordable electric cars. - Four BEV-centric platforms are the backbone of the electrified vehicles from Stellantis brands. The platforms are designed with a high level of flexibility (length and width) and component sharing, delivering economies of scale as each platform can support production of up to two million units per year. The four platforms are: ● STLA Small, with a range up to 500 kilometers/300 miles ● STLA Medium, with a range up to 700 kilometers/440 miles ● STLA Large, with a range up to 800 kilometers/500 miles ● STLA Frame, with a range up to 800 kilometers/500 miles - Stellantis recognizes that CTP (cell-to-pack) combined with cobalt-free batteries are the two most important technologies available today to make affordable electric cars that compete with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars in price and availability. However, Stellantis will delay the introduction of these two technologies until 2024. Moreover, only in 2026 the TCO (total cost of ownership) of Stellantis' electric cars will match ICE cars - With this decision, Stellantis leaves an open door for Chinese automakers to arrive and dominate the European EV market very soon Original Source : https://pushevs.com/2021/07/08/stellantis-delays-affordable-electric-cars-until-2026/ STELLANTIS TO INVEST €30 BILLION IN E-MOBILITY - In the US, performance brand Dodge plans to launch its first electric muscle car in 2024, Ram will sell an electric version the 1500 in 2024. Jeep wants to offer plug-in hybrids in all SUV segments by 2024, the Wrangler 4xe is already sold out for this year. The Jeep Wagoneer is to be targeted as an all-electric premium SUV primarily for the US market. - In addition to the gigafactories of ACC (the joint venture together with Total subsidiary Saft), the cells are to be sourced from CATL, BYD, SVOLT, Samsung and LG Energy Solution, preferably from their European plants. The 50 GWh for the USA are to be procured from partners, while names are not yet mentioned since final negotiations are reportedly still underway. In 2030, the demand will be the 260 GWh mentioned above, of which more than 170 GWh will be in Europe. Half of this – 85 GWh – is to be covered by ACC. Either ACC will have to expand the factories in Douvrai, Kaiserslautern and Termoli or build further gigafactories. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/08/stellantis-to-invest-e30-billion-in-e-mobility VAUXHALL EV-ONLY BY 2028 AS STELLANTIS RAMPS UP ELECTRIFICATION - The company – whose brands are Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall – has targeted low-emissions vehicles (LEV) accounting for more than 70% of its European sales and 40% of its US sales by 2030. The LEV term includes both electric cars and plug-in hybrids. - Opel – including Vauxhall in the UK – will become an electric-only brand in Europe by the end of 2028 in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The firm will also expand into the Chinese market with a range of EVs. The German brand has also confirmed that it will revive the Manta name for a new EV. Opel has previously shown an electric restomod version of the Manta, but a teaser of this latest car shows it will be entirely unrelated, with the concept's low-slung retro silhouette making way for a high-riding and altogether more SUV-esque proposition. - , Fiat will become electric-only by 2030, with the exact date determined by customer demand, and will launch a new dedicated EV in 2024. Its performance offshoot, Abarth, will also go electric-only. - Stellantis has also released 'statements' for all 14 of its brands to reflect the electrification approach of each. Alfa Romeo's statement is "From 2024, Alfa Becomes Alfa e-Romeo", although the firm has yet to specify exactly what this means. Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-manufacturing/vauxhall-ev-only-2028-stellantis-ramps-electrification STELLANTIS INVESTS IN ITS FIRST ALL-EV PLANT - The automaker plans to devote its factory in Ellesmere Port in the UK to electric LCVs (light commercial vehicles) and passenger EVs, with the plant slated to produce models under four brands: Opel, Vauxhall, Citroën, and Peugeot. - The plant will receive a new body shop, an on-site battery-pack assembly facility, and an upgraded general assembly. - When it comes to light commercial vehicles, the Ellesmere Port plant will produce battery-electric versions of the Opel and Vauxhall Combo-e and its passenger variant, as well as the Citroën e-Berlingo along with its passenger version, and the Peugeot e-Partner with its own passenger model. CITROËN Ë-SPACETOURER TO HIT MARKETS IN 2020 "PSA is accelerating its push into commercial electric vehicles as Citroën has now announced that it will also launch the compact van Spacetourer as a BEV – called the ë-SpaceTourer – by the end of the year." says electrive: "Peugeot will follow with the sister model Peugeot e-Traveller scheduled to hit the markets before the end of 2020. Both use the same technology with an electric motor of 100 kW, and there is a choice of two battery versions with 50 or 75 kWh. The latter enables a WLTP range of up to 330 kilometres. The third electric van in the group, the Opel Zafira Life, is announced for early 2021. Like its commercial vehicle counterparts Peugeot e-Expert, Citroën ë-Jumpy and Opel Vivaro-e, the Zafira Life also uses the well-known PSA drive. TESLA POISED TO ROLL OUT SPEED LIMIT RECOGNITION AND ROUNDABOUT SUPPORT "Tesla is poised to improve its Autopilot functionality and its Full Self-Driving suite by rolling out speed limit recognition and roundabout support worldwide soon." says Teslarati: " Tesla hacker @greentheonly posted a tweet on the evening of June 11 describing the company’s intention to release the upcoming and highly-anticipated Autopilot improvements. It is unknown when the updates will roll out to Tesla owners, but the noted Tesla hacker indicated they would likely be coming soon, and that the features would be released worldwide. Tesla seems to be utilizing 3D-rendered icons for the upcoming features. This suggests that speed limit recognition may be integrated directly in the in-car displays of the company’s vehicles, similar to stop lights, stop signs, and other vehicles on the road." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-speed-limit-recognition-roundabout-support-worldwide-release-date/ RENAULT ENDS BATTERY LEASING IN SPAIN "Renault is slowly removing the option to lease the battery from its electric cars. Work has begun on the vehicle, with delivery anticipated for mid-December 2020.While DPD makes wide use of electric vans for shorter last-mile trips, using battery-powered vehicles for long distances and large payloads has generally been difficult because the size of the battery required takes up significant space and weight within the vehicle." https://edelivery.net/2020/06/dpd-deploy-volvo-long-range-electric-truck-switzerland/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS Pete Glass Frankly if it can’t match the original 2012 Volt or Opel/Vauxhall Ampera’s 35miles or so, it’s completely pointless and the latest Kuga Phev or Prius Prime barely scrape past that. Now I hear of talk of 60miles plus from Merc [?], could be good for some people but only if they have home charging. Next generation Phevs must have rapid or at less semi-rapid charging [22kW] to be really worthwhile and now only the Mitsi Outlander does this. Now here I emphasise and rant … if you don’t have home charging then a low miles Phev really is utterly pointless, faffing about hunting for a public charger for a few miles Rich Fowler I find that the Clarity's 35-50 miles of range works pretty well for me for now, given where I live and how I use the car, but obviously, that's not going to work for everyone. Some people can get away with even less range than that, and some will want even more. Having less than 35 miles of range in the winter is annoying where I live, where things are a little spaced out and suburban. And it's just enough battery where I can get it fully charged up on a 120v 15A circuit overnight Tom James In response to QOTW regarding PHEV range, I think that once you have a range of between 30-40 miles on full electric, it renders PHEVs unnecessary, as most people’s daily driving will fit into this range bracket. So one might as well buy a full EV with the extra 100 or so miles of range for the rare occasion that one drives a longer distance. As an Outlander PHEV owner (which gets 30 miles EV range on a good day), it only took around 2 months of ownership to realise I wasn’t using any petrol day to day and was carrying around an engine and fuel tank for no reason. I have regretted not going for a BEV ever since, now I have to steal my wife’s Ioniq EV! Alan Northcutt, waco, tx USA answer: 0 miles because plug-in hybrids are a waste of resources now. they offer few e-miles, emit tailpipe and carbon pollution, require much maintenance, malfunction more frequently. with the growing charge network, they are unnecessary and only delay the transition to battery-electrics. analogous to natural gas, they are not a "bridge vehicle." and they only delay the transition to reach "net zero" emissions by 2050 (IPCC) Dan from Canada Ideal: 2 x your total daily commute, in a car with a heat pump - would allow for EV mode for 100% of local driving, including chores, even in winter. Use gasoline (hybrid mode) only for longer weekend/vacation drives. Good: 1.5 x your total daiy commute, no heat pump - allows for EV mode for all local driving, including chores, except on some winter days. Again, hybrid mode for longer drives. That’s our situation with our Hyundai Ioniq PHEV - “as EV as we can afford”. Marginal: 1 x your total daily commute - but may be actually good enough if you don’t need the car for chores or you can charge at work. Too low: less than your total daily commute, but may be good enough if you can charge at work. Rene Schneider The battery of the plug in hybrid car should cover the daily commute and you have to have the ability to charge at home (or at work), to make the driver happy. This means an absolute minimum of 50–60km standard battery range for a plug-in, better 80–100km (to cover for winter degrade). Otherwise the driver soon gets too lazy to plug in often enough and experience the joy of EV. Fast charge: What I most missed the last years was, to be able to „fast" charge my plug-in within less than an hour. Often it was not worthwhile to use a charger when you had an hour break somewhere. Strong EV motor: Key for the plug in is a strong enough EV motor (ours has 100kW). So to experience the joy of EV, and that the fossil gobbler has not to kick in regularly. Joe Maher I say a PHEV should have 80 to 100kms range. 24kwh battery should do it. I have the outlander and the 40does most days but maybe twice a week I have to do 80 to 100 in a day and I hate dipping into the tank. Mike H We bought a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid almost exactly 1 year ago. It's got a 16KWh battery (~12KWh useable) but is pretty heavy (~5000lbs). It's range is supposed to be about 52km, but I live in the mountains and my commute goes up a really big hill. Driving around in the city where it's flat, it'll go 60+km, but going to work and back (30km round trip) uses about 75% in the summer and 95% in the winter. In the year we've owned it, we've put just 5 tanks of gas (~250 litres) while doing almost 20,000km. It's insane how little gas we've used and on longer trips where there's charging available. In fact with cheap zero carbon hydro electricity here in BC and high gas prices, I figure we've saved about $1,800 in fuel! patdbean The average commute in the UK at least is about 38 miles , so a good hybrid range is 40 to 50 miles that way , as long as you can charge at home and at work that should be enough to keep "most" hybrids on electric "most" of the time. Bimi I think we should demand a minimum of 60km WLTP / real world range on hybrids. Having driven ev for 6 years now i see that more and more friends/people buy plugins and they like driving on EV mode so much that everywhere they go they will plug it in and charge it. This results in less charging spots available for those that really need it. Steven Bollinger Question of the week: If hybrid cars had enough all-electric range so that their owners NEVER burned any gasoline, that would be perfect, in my humble opinion. Paul F Enough range to do all city driving so 70ks would be perfect for a plug in hybrid. ICE cars are sort of economical at constant speed but they are very inefficient at start stop. Also it does not take much power to keep a car at speed but it takes a lot of energy to accelerate the Briggs and Stratton hybrid concept from 1980 proves that an air cooled lawnmower engine can keep a car moving alan baker On question of week, PHEV's should be able to do min 30 miles on battery to qualify for grant. Had a niro PHEV for about 18 mths and found that I could do the majority of my local journeys on the battery, but is was nice to have engine as a back up because the Charge points in rural Wales is very poor Cameron Hall 50 miles on the battery would probably be my minimum. Not that I would ever buy a hybrid car, way too many moving parts. LTK • 1 week ago I had a Ford PHEV with 21 mile EV range & got gas about once a month. I charged at home every night. I understand people with the Volt (42 EV Range) got gas about once every 3 months. I’d like a PHEV with 80-100 mile EV range & get gas about once a year - only for road trips and to keep the ICE parts working. Josh Pritt, Space Coast EV Drivers The 2nd generation Chevy Volt had a fairly perfect EV range of 52 miles. That seemed to cover all of our daily driving and still have miles left to run an extra unplanned errand or two. It even covers the weekend trips where we would go to the mall, movies, grocery store, visit parents and friends around town and still come home with 2 or 3 miles left on the battery. I would say any new plug in hybrid would have to have at least 52 miles range, otherwise they are starting out many years BEHIND a car that came out in 2015. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the Kia K900 to the Toyota Camry. These four diverse vehicles are on the list of the 2019 Best Cars and Trucks of the Year, announced by The Weekly Driver Podcast. Podcast co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the list on episode #116 of the weekly program that reports on all things automotive. The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is among the top-10 Cars and Trucks of 2019, according to Bruce Aldrich and James Raia, co-hosts of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Image © James Raia. As is our logical way, we wait until the end of the year to name our selections. As in previous years, the 2019 choices were selected only from the list of 35-40 cars and trucks manufacturers provided for weekly reviews for my weekly syndicated automotive column. It's published by Bay Area News Group in San Jose, California, Motors Matters in Delaware and Gulfshore Business in Naples, Florida. Bruce also drove most of the cars on the list and we have a lively discussion during the podcast. Which is to say, we disagreed on some of the choices. The 10 vehicles on the 2019 Best Cars and Trucks list include manufacturers from the United States, South Korea and Japan. The Weekly Driver has been writing about our main automotive vent for years. How do prestigious industry publications determine their vehicles-of-the-year selections before the calendar year starts? Selecting a list of the year's best at the end of the calendar year makes sense. How can a 2020 list be announced (several have) in December of 2019 when not all of the 2020 models vehicles are available. Here's the list in alphabetical order of the 2019 Best Cars and Trucks of the Year: Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, GMC Sierra, Honda Civic, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, Infiniti QX80, Kia K900, Lexus LS500, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Camry. The Kia K900 is among The Weekly Driver Podcast's 2019 Best Cars and Trucks. All of the vehicles on the list are reviewed on The Weekly Driver.com. We're driving mainstream compacts, luxury sedans, and the $100,000 Ford Shelby GT500. Topics include the seemingly imminent merger of FCA and PSA, and the surprisingly reasonable price of the new MINI Cooper SE EV.
Minivans get almost no respect on an SUV-laden landscape, but if the 2019 Chrysler Pacific Hybrid is any indication, they are still the best option for families who truly need to maximize space and practicality. Benjamin drives the battery-powered van and discovers all the ways it's a better choice than an SUV for so many buyers. Sami reports back on his time with the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, a revised sport-utility that has more bounce to the ounce, but doesn't quite deliver when it comes to th drive. The pair also answer a listener question about the current crop of turbocharged subcompact hot hatches. This weeks episode is brought to you by the new Roland Gumpert Nathalie. For families looking to electrify their commutes, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid may be the easiest way to enter the world of EV driving. Tom Voelk and his family take this roomy minivan long distance to discover the flexibility of plug-in hybrids. And if you don’t learn how awesome vans and plug-in hybrids can be, you’ll discover some great vacation spots in California and Nevada. Full disclosure- Chrysler provided the vehicle for this 10-day trip and Visa gift cards for gas, charging and incidentals as part of a manufacturer’s event. Opinions and editorial, as always, are mine (plus the observations of dozens of people that ended up riding in the Pacifica Hybrid on this trip.).

TeamClearCoat - An Automotive Enthusiast Podcast by Two Car Nerds
Episode 197 The Chrysler Pacifica is many things: a minivian, A hybrid vehicle, a nice place to be. More than anything however, it is one specific thing: a belt sander that takes every rough edge that life throws at you and smooths it down to a pleasant, easy-to-handle shape. In this episode we discuss the minivan we love so much and what it's like to handle said shapes after they've been Pacifica-fied. We really enjoyed our time with this minivan, it inspired some great discussion and perspectives between us for this episode. We also reflected on the times and ways minivans impacted our lives, from family vacations to driving exams to one of us (Ian) getting it stuck in a ditch from drifts gone awry. Did I really need to mention that was Ian that got a van stuck? No. No I didn't. Big thanks to FCA and Rocky Mountain Redline for issuing the vehicle to us for the week. We hope this episode reflects our adoration of this fantastic and capable vehicle. Buy stuff with our hashtag brand on it! With an eye toward the New Year, Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin discuss the ins-and-outs of planning a successful race calendar. Answering a variety of questions from BAMRs on the AMR Facebook page, they start with debating “the sweet spot,” the optimum number of races per year. Amanda, a coach for a decade, talks about the importance of making decisions about your goal for the year—then making choices to set you up for success. Coach Amanda explains why she’s not a fan of “over-racing” and she dazzles SBS with the concept of “results-oriented running.” Amanda details how to be half-marathon ready at all times. The coach outlines how to tackle several endurance races in one season, and what a runner’s focus must be between races. Find out what the “desire factor” with marathons is—and which one of the duo feels it creeping back into her soul (soles!?). And, naturally, the duo wraps up the conversation with a detour into the realm of paddle spots. (Are you #TeamPickleball or #TeamPaddleTennis?) In the intro, the chitchat goes to the dogs—literally: Amanda and SBS talk about their pooches (whippet and French bulldog, respectively). Amanda puts on her coach’s hat for the meat of the show at 15:56. For a vehicle that’s friendlier to the environment and boasts numerous comfort features, check out the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Sarah and co-host Tish Hamilton thoroughly enjoy an amazing conversation with Deena Kastor, bronze medalist in the women’s marathon in 2004 Olympic Games and author of Let Your Mind Run: A Memoir of Thinking My Way to Victory. A mom of one, Deena tells how her first post-baby run made her “entire body tingle with joy,” then moves into sharing the struggle of striving to be “a gold-medal mom and a gold-medal runner.” She tells how her summer training schedule differs from her school-year one. (Spoiler alert: Her weekly mileage doubles once school starts!) Find out which race was “a major suffer-fest” for Deena, and the granular tactics she used to persevere to the finish line. Marvel as Deena tells about the impediments leading up to her setting the U.S. Masters Marathon record at the 2015 Chicago Marathon—and how, in the final miles, she broke that race into manageable chunks. Thanks to an insightful question from Tish, Deena reveals how writing her memoir was the “hardest finish line” she ever reached. Deena shares countless pieces of advice for putting positivity into action. Find out what Deena’s word for 2018 is—and laugh along as Deena and Tish inadvertently come up with a title for the cookbook we hope Deena authors next! All this, and so much more! In the intro, Tish and SBS talk about the final days of summer vacation, and Tish serves up important resume-running-post-injury advice to Sarah. Olympian Deena joins the show at 20:38. Sarah and Dimity join forces for this special episode in which Dimity, along with her two Minnesota-based friends Jo and Jess, share their recent grand adventure: hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim! The three amigos recount the highs and lows of their 12-hour trek (time in motion: 10 hours, 15 minutes), including the “magic” of Ribbon Falls and the odor on the trail “that can burn nostril hair!”). Discover what “The Box” is, and why it was particularly tough for Jess; learn why Dimity chased down a squirrel. Be surprised by what was the toughest part of the day for Dimity. Marvel as the trio discusses the joy of a communal endeavor—and share the somewhat-surprising post-hike blues. Hear about their pre-trip training, and find out what these friends’ next adventure might be. Reminder: Later this month, Sarah + Dimity plan to launch a bi-weekly “call-in” show. But to kick it off, they need your questions! Please leave message of 90 seconds or less at 470-BADASS1 (470-223-2771) Thanks to Aaptiv for supporting our podcast. Sarah and co-host Ellison convene for what is one of their favorite days of the year: the recording of AMR’s annual summer reading episode! But the duo soon realizes it should be labeled a pop culture show, as they take frequent tangents to discuss their current favorite British TV shows (“Crashing” for SBS; “The Split” for Ellison) and new podcasts Sarah is listening to (“The RFK Tapes” and “The Gateway”). Speaking of podcasts, Ellison shares why her show, “The Book Bully,” has been on hiatus. When the conversation dwells on books (starting at 16:15), the recommendations run the gamut, from Scandinavian noir to several “quirky” novels to a novel with a “meta” conceit both SBS and E adored! Laughs—and a few tears—abound on this delightful conversation between two dear friends. Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin sit down with three father runners to get a look inside their lives. From early morning workouts to crying at the end of a race, the guys aren’t all that different from the gals. First up is Ty Francis, a trail runner/triathlete and a divorced dad of three young sons. A physical therapist, Ty tells why he adopted a guiding principle of training everyone should consider following. He also reveals why he had to let go of feeling competitive. Discover why he spent 22.5 hours on a bike—the reason will tug on your parental heart strings. Next, father of two Michael Goff joins the conversation. A newbie runner, Michael quickly describes himself as “athlet-ish, not athletic.” Laugh along with SBS and Coach Amanda as Michael explains why he doesn’t allow himself to go on Strava until at least an hour after a run. Courtesy of Michael, you’ll learn more acronyms (BRC; VBRF; BADR) to add to your vocab (in addition to BAMR). Michael is the first of two dads to admit to crying at a running race—the other one is the third guest, David Yonker. This Iowan father of two tells how he became an avid runner because of his wife. A pastor, David confesses a simple-but-clever trick he sometimes employs to catch his breath on a run. He talks about how he and his wife take turns with training cycles and workout times. Find out how the mighty Mississippi River factors into David’s life—as well as a fond fatherly memory of SBS. In the introduction, Sarah and Amanda reminisce about the eerily similar athletic lifestyles of each of their recently deceased fathers, and how these strong men influenced their own sporty lives. Sarah and co-host Molly pick the brains of three experienced runners who have not only raced 1,000s of miles, but have traveled across the U.S. and around the globe to do it! First up is Katie Ho, co-founder of RaceRaves, an online community/app that she dubs “TripAdvisor but for races.” Katie gives loads of advice, including packing tips and how to choose the best “away” race for you. Katie, Molly, and SBS chew on the topic of food while away from home, especially pre-race eats. Next is Sandi Borgman, a repeat AMR Podcast guest who’s run half- and full marathons in places as far flung as Iceland, Berlin, and Paris. Sandi quickly tosses out one of the best quips ever, involving being on vacation with a person who’s tapering. She quickly outdoes that gem with a cautionary tale about lubing up mid-race with what she thought was Vaseline. (Ouch!!) Despite having run all the World Marathon Majors(minus Tokyo), Sandi sings the praises of opting for away 13.1-mile races rather than 26.2-mile ones. A veteran of 20 marathons (!!) in her 10 years of running, Sandi shares brilliant on-course advice. The final guest is Lorelei Suehrstedt. (Caution: Don’t trip when you hear how many races (half-marathons, marathons, and ultras) in the five years she’s been running!) Lorelei lets rip a fabulous one-liner about mouth breaking, when she suggests thinking about various race conditions when choosing a destination race. This road warrior gives loads of great advice about both driving and flying to races. The trio talk about the importance of looking at the cost of the entire race trip, and Lorelei offers sage tips about booking accommodations. And laugh at talk of supportive spouses, including finding out who “Saint Craig” is. In the intro, Molly teaches Sarah a new (for SBS) mash-up: “proma.” The first guest joins the convo at 17:18. Thursday 29th March 2018. TESLA After a stock rout on Tuesday, another day today when Tesla lost over 7% of its value. Of course none of this makes any difference to the products it makes or how much people love the brand. No doubt it will bounce back, and as I’ve said before this isn’t a financial podcast, but the bigger picture is how the mainstream media will start to prophesize the end of electric cars. THE ELECTRIC MINI REVEALED A YEAR EARLY At the New York International Auto Show yesterday we saw an Electric Mini a year before we were meant to, but this was a Mini Cooper from the 1960s which has been converted to electric with a single motor. Would you like one? Yeah, me too. But you can’t buy it. It’s a one-off model. And a clever way to get us talking about electric minis without showing off the real thing yet. The 1960’s classic mini shape is known around the world and wouldn’t it be amazing if they just made a handful of them for sale. A bit like the recently Fully Charged video with Johnny Smith which featured a converted Jaguar E-Type. Back to the Mini Electric proper, that will arrive in 2019 for the 60th Anniversary of Mini. Of course for now we have to make do with the PHEV Mini Countryman, or the i3 which I’ve heard will be a donor for drivetrain bits. VW ATLAS PLUG IN CONCEPT Also at the New York International Auto Show, VW showed off a plug in version of their Atlas Cross Sport. Technically at this stage a concept BUT close to production. The ICE is coupled with motors on the front and rear axles, and a respectable 18kWh battery. That’s good for 26 miles / 42kms on pure electric. Production is slated for next year in Tennessee. EVS NOW EQUIVALENT OF 80MPG A recent analysis showed that EV drivers save 2.3 times as much as those driving ICE cars, and now engineers at the Union of Concerned Scientists has more good news. An EV now gets has the equivalent emissions of a gas car that gets 80 miles to the gallon, and if you can find one of those, then good luck. Fast Company says: “In the Pacific Northwest, where most power comes from hydro, EVs get the equivalent of 96 MPGs. In California, which has plenty of solar, the equivalent is 109 MPG.” Engineer David Reichmuth said: “It’s difficult to make burning gasoline cleaner, and electricity is trending cleaner over time as we shift away from coal and add more renewables. This means that EVs that were sold years ago can run much cleaner than when they were purchased,” NATIONAL GRID SUPPORTS 2030 ICE BAN Graeme Cooper is the UK National Grid’s electric car grand poobah, and he told the government yesterday that if we moved the 2040 ICE ban forward to 2030, the grid could cope. Yes you can still make a coffee and charge your car! He said: “A deadline of 2030 would still give us enough time to cope with any changes that need to be made. We would support a more ambitious target. It provides a clear focus and allows the networks industry to respond appropriately. Even if you left the 2040 target in place, I think the number of people still buying a conventional petrol or diesel car before that deadline will be a short list. “It’s important on a world stage that the UK matches our neighbours. Norway is the most ambitious with a target of 2025.” NISSAN LEAF WINS “2018 WORLD GREEN CAR” Another story from the Auto Show currently in NYC, and Eric at InsideEVs reports that a pure BEV has won the “World Green Car” award for the first time. He writes: “The three finalists for the award were: BMW 530e iPerformance vs Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vs Nissan LEAF. Upon receiving the award, Nissan’s Daniele Schillaci, Executive Vice President, Global Marketing and Sales, Zero Emission Vehicle and Battery Business, said: “We’re very proud that since Nissan LEAF launched in 2010, we’ve been able to put more than 300,000 zero-emission electric vehicles on the road worldwide, helping to reduce carbon footprints around the globe. We’re honored to be recognized by this esteemed jury and proud to continue to expand the vision of Nissan Intelligent Mobility.” TWO NEW MECHANIC TRAINING SCHEMES Long time podcast listeners know I’m worried about the huge industry of mechanics, both working for large dealers and local one-man-band independents. Not only will EVs require fewer visits to the car hospital, but they need retraining urgently. Firstly today Tesla started a new training programme called ‘Tesla Start’. Graduates should get a job with Tesla within 30 days of a graduation but will have to relocate. It’s a 12-week course in North Carolina or California. And in the UK today Allianz Worldwide Partners has teamed up with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) to create a new electric, hybrid and PHEV vehicle training programme for roadside recovery. Skill requirements include identifying AC and DC voltages, as well as high voltage symbols, cabling and components, during maintenance and repair. PORSCHE MISSION E SPIED TESTING Teslarati have a video worth checking out of the Porsche Mission E at the infamous Nurburgring circuit. They say: “Porsche recently took its Mission E prototype to the Nurburgring in Germany, where it was spotted speeding through one of the tracks’ iconic turns. As could be seen in a brief clip featuring the upcoming all-electric high-performance sedan, the Mission E was able to go through the exit of Brunnchen in classic, aggressive Porsche fashion. VW TO SELL TWO EV MODELS BY DEC 2019 California already has the e-golf on sale but, one of the conditions of the settlement has been noted by Green Car Reports, and that’s by the end of 2019 VW has to have two more pure BEVs on sale in the state. We know the VW I.D. is coming, if it looks like and Golf and quacks like a Golf, it’s probably a Golf by another name. For clarity, it’s the I.D. and not a Golf replacement. But that might not be on sale in North America in time. So you’re looking at the Audi e-tron Quattro SUV to fill one gap, and the other the Porsche Mission E. WIRELESS CHARGING HITS THE ROAD Finally we’ve had some hard news, now for the speculations. And would you look at the time, it must be time for another story about wireless charging. Because they come around like clockwork. The University Of Colorado in Boulder have made progress with charging whilst on the move. Professor Afridi explained: “On a highway, you could have one lane dedicated to charging,” adding that a vehicle could simply travel in that lane when it needed an energy boost and could carry a smaller onboard battery as a result, reducing the overall cost of the vehicle.
