Officers from the Cheshire Constabulary stood guard at the rear of a property on Hylton Court in Ellesmere Port. The fabulous Landlord does a short round up of stories inviting comments from our intrepid guests and tackles the weird and wonderful world that is the UK. In P3 we discuss Cheshire West and Chester installing CCTV cameras in Chester and Ellesmere Port in a bid to crackdown on irresponsible drivers. We are somehow a tad dubious of intentions as fines are part of the plans! This is a must listen to for everyone worldwide but also residents in Cheshire, MPs, counils and Councillors in Cheshire and all other public officials (in case we don't survive another week in the UK). Hope all public officials in authority are enhanced DBS checked? Cheshire Matters will be checking up on you. You don't really know who in public office you can trust these days!!!!!!! On the 9th of October 1986, Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows returned home from school, running through the front doors of their respective homes, eager to get changed and play outside. Around 5 pm, the girls played with friends outside a neighbor's house. Shortly after this, the girls headed to Wild Park; despite knowing they were not allowed there, Nicola was told by her parents that the “boogeyman” lived there, hoping to scare her away from ever entering. Sadly, for unknown reasons, the girls entered the park that afternoon. The girls were spotted around 5:15 pm by a park policeman, playing on some trees, who warned them that they would hurt themselves. As the afternoon turned into evening, both families began to worry. 8 pm was their bedtime, and they both knew to be home by then, but there was no sign of either of them. MAIN EVENT is Greatest Island Champ vs. Longest Reigning Champ Having defeated NXT UK Aluminus Joseph Connors at TNT X ISLAND No Limit, Lance Revera proved he is truly the greatest Wrestle Island Champion we have had, but throwing down the challenge for Ellesmere Port is a man with an equally impressive boast... Dan Evans held the Wrestle Island championship for 714 days and never once felt revered the way Lance Revera has during his current reign. Both Lance and Dan agreed that defeating the other man will truly be a feather in their cap in their Wrestle Island journeys... And here we have our main event for Ellesmere Port. Lance Revera and Dan Evans will do battle, and one of two things will happen once the dust has settled: Lance Revera will continue to be the Greatest Island Champion or Dan Evans will add many more days to his championship reigns. Great news is that the Gazelle is Zooming in with us again this week but unfortunately the Raven is still here in person along with the wonderfully factual Stats. Oven-Ready HR
What's The Future of Work Under Labour?

Oven-Ready HR

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2022 24:35

There are so many big employment and workplace stories at the moment.  From chaos at UK airports due to staff shortages and the raging work from home debate to planned strikes on the rail network and of course the fallout from 'partygate' at 10 Downing St! Added to that this week's narrowly  won vote of no confidence in the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson all adds to a sense of upheaval and uncertainty - hardly a welcome backdrop for any organisation. The political uncertainty is a timely prompt to start looking at what the world of work would be like under a Labour administration.  Justin Madders MP is Labour's Shadow Minister for Employment Rights and Protections. Justin is a former solicitor who specialised in employment law before being elected as the member of parliament for Ellesmere Port and Neston in 2015.  I start by asking the Shadow Minister his view on the impending National Rail strike.Who's to blame for the chaos at UK airports? [02:30]Justin Madders believes it's very convenient for the UK government to blame airlines and other travel providers for the chaos at UK airports. He believes government support was lifted far too quickly before the sector was back on its feet.Is Boris Johnson's unpopularity a gift to Labour? [04:10]Justin Madders accepts that whilst Boris Johnson's unpopularity is a gift for any opposition party, the national interest will be affected by paralysis and in-fighting amongst Conservative members of parliament, therefore the sooner the Prime Minister is removed the better. What will the Downing St culture be like under Sir Keir Starmer? [05:39]'Partygate' has highlighted the dysfunctional culture at the heart of government.  I ask Justin Madders what sort of workplace culture Sir Keir Starmer would instigate if he were the Prime Minister? What are the key elements of Labour's Future of Work plan? [06:39]Justin Madders explains the key pillars than underpin Labour's future of work plan.  The plan is designed end the precarious nature of employment that many workers face and provide well-paid jobs and a level-playing field for all employers. What's happened to Lord Hendy's Status of Workers bill? [08:35]Justin Madders explains why he isn't confident that the Government will support Lord Hendy's bill.Do we need more collective bargaining in the UK? [11.57]Yes is the simple answer and in Labour's plan there is a desire to move towards more sectorial collective bargaining / fair pay agreements. What's happening with the P&O dismissals? [15:40]Justin Madders is keen that the Government maintains pressure on P&O in light of their sacking of hundreds of workers without consultation and notice. The working from home debate [20:13]I ask Justin Madders for his view on the working from home debate.  Is WFH just a blip?Resourceshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/podcasthost/https://ovenreadyhr.comhttps://labour.org.uk/people/shadow-cabinet/https://www.justinmadders.com

SK INNOVATION TO INVEST $1 BLN IN A NEW BATTERY FACTORY IN CHINA - South Korea's SK Innovation Co Ltd (096770.KS) said on Wednesday it will invest 1.2 trillion won ($1.04 billion) in a new battery factory in China. - The South Korean battery maker, which supplies electric car batteries to Ford Motor Co (F.N), Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) among others, has battery production sites in the United States, Hungary, China and South Korea. - In July, SK Innovation said it would aim to increase its annual battery production capacity to 200 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2025 Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/sk-innovation-invest-1-bln-new-battery-factory-china-2021-09-01/ PREPRODUCTION KIA EV6 DRIVEN - The interior is cool. There's a wide screen on the dash, which itself is adorned with stylish gray and white lines that continue on the center console lid. The shifter is a rotary dial with “park” at its vertex and “R, N and D” positioned just outside its circumference. A power button sits slightly elevated ahead of the shifter, while a wireless charging pad is located behind. - There are two 12-volt power outlets on that lower deck, and a USB and USB-C just ahead below the center stack: - The EV6's ride quality is a bit on the stiffer side, though not harsh. - That's reasonably quick, though in an EV without sound or shifts, that sprint is a gradual affair and not something that will blow you away (a 576 horsepower Kia EV6 GT model is on the horizon). - Even if it's clearly not a sports car, I had a good time zipping the EV6 around those twisty streets in the countryside north of Frankfurt, though to me, what makes the car special isn't its handling or its power, it's its design. The outside is quirky and fun, and the cabin is just a cool place to spend time. Original Source : https://jalopnik.com/genesis-is-going-very-electric-very-soon-1847604925 OPEL TO RELEASE THE ASTRA AS A BEV - Opel will also offer the new Astra as a purely electric model from 2023. The manufacturer has now announced this at the official presentation of the sixth generation of the model. Before the launch as a BEV, plug-in hybrids in two performance levels are available for the new Astra. - The new Astra will also be launched as a purely battery-electric car. - The DS 4 and the Astra not only share the EMP2 as their technical basis, but they are also both built at Opel's Rüsselsheim plant. - The existing BEV models based on the EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform) are the large vans or transporters, such as the Citroën ë-Spacetourer or the Opel models Zafira-e Life (passenger cars) or Vivaro-e (commercial vehicles). - Astra will be available to order from autumn and will be delivered from the beginning of 2022 – initially as a “sporty five-door model”. An “elegant estate version” with the familiar name Astra Sports Tourer is to follow “shortly”. The site will contain eight ultra-rapid 150kW EV charging bays - MFG CEO William Bannister said: “We are delighted to be opening this EV-only forecourt that offers ultra-rapid charging on the Chester Road in Stretford, which is a first for the north west of the country. With eight ultra-rapid charging bays, we believe this site will help lead the local transition to more sustainable electric vehicles.” - This move forms part of its plans to invest £400m in ultra-rapid EV charges across its UK network Original Source : https://www.thegrocer.co.uk/forecourts/mfg-opens-first-electric-vehicle-only-hub-at-manchester-forecourt/659354.article COX AUTOMOTIVE ACQUIRES BATTERY HEALTH COMPANY SPIERS AS ‘EVS TAKE CENTER STAGE' - Cox Automotive is getting into the electric vehicle battery lifecycle business. The company said Wednesday it acquired Oklahoma City-based Spiers New Technologies (SNT), a business that provides repair, remanufacturing, refurbishing and repurposing services for EV battery packs. - It added that electric vehicles have completely different service profiles than their internal combustion engine vehicle counterparts, and much of that comes down to the battery. EV battery support is particularly critical as the battery pack itself can comprise as much as 40% of the vehicle's cost - Cox said it would use the diagnostic tool to push greater confidence in electric vehicles, likening it to the way that Kelley Blue Book has provided greater transparency about ICE vehicles' condition for consumers. Plus all Patreon supporters get their own unique ad-free podcast feed.   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 8th July. It's  Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   STELLANTIS MAKES 30 BILLION EURO WAGER ON ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET   - Stellantis (STLA.MI), the world's No. 4 automaker, said on Thursday it plans to invest more than 30 billion euros ($35.54 billion) through 2025 on electrifying its vehicle lineup. The company, formed in January from the merger of Italian-American automaker Fiat Chrysler and France's PSA, said its strategy will be supported by five battery plants in Europe and North America as it gears up to compete with electric vehicle (EV) leader Tesla (TSLA.O) and other automakers globally.   - Stellantis said it is targeting more than 70% of sales in Europe and over 40% in the United States to be low-emission vehicles - either battery or hybrid electric - by 2030. It aims to make the total cost of owning an EV equal to that of a gasoline-powered model by 2026.   - Stellantis said it wants to secure more than 130 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity by 2025 and more than 260 GWh by 2030. It said it has signed memorandums of understanding with two lithium geothermal brine process partners in North America and Europe to ensure supplies of lithium, a critical raw material for batteries.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/stellantis-says-h1-margin-expected-top-annual-target-55-75-2021-07-08/     STELLANTIS TO SOURCE OVER 260 GWH IN EV BATTERY CAPACITY BY 2030   - Stellantis currently has two gigafactory projects, one in France and one in Germany, under its joint venture with Total, called Automotive Cells Company (ACC).   Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares announced that it would also be building a gigaplant in Italy at its engine facility, and one in the US.   - Stellantis said that its plans included dual battery chemistries, including a high energy-density option and a nickel cobalt-free alternative by 2024, with a solid-state battery technology introduction planned in 2026.   - As part of its strategy, Stellantis is also aiming to reduce battery costs using its technical expertise and manufacturing synergies, with it targeting to reduce EV battery pack costs by over 40% from 2020 to 2024 and by more than an additional 20% by 2030.   Original Source : https://www.spglobal.com/platts/en/market-insights/latest-news/electric-power/070821-stellantis-to-source-over-260-gwh-in-ev-battery-capacity-by-2030   AFTER SLOW START, STELLANTIS BETS BIG ON EVS   - Just by mid-decade, said Tavares, the goal will be to have 55 plug-based vehicles in global showrooms: 40 battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, and another 15 plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, or PHEVs.   - The PSA side of Stellantis, drawing on experience from core brands Citroën, Opel and Peugeot, is further ahead when it comes to electrification. In the U.S., the former Fiat Chrysler brands trail the competition. It currently offers no all-electric models and just two plug-ins, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan and the new Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The response to the 4xe has taken company officials by surprise, generating more than 20% of Wrangler sales since its April debut.   Original Source : https://www.forbes.com/wheels/news/stellantis-ev-plans   STELLANTIS DELAYS AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC CARS UNTIL 2026   - Stellantis EV Day 2021 was embarrassing. The 3 hour video presentation was all about putting together multiple nonsense commercials and delaying the introduction of affordable electric cars.   - Four BEV-centric platforms are the backbone of the electrified vehicles from Stellantis brands. The platforms are designed with a high level of flexibility (length and width) and component sharing, delivering economies of scale as each platform can support production of up to two million units per year. The four platforms are: ● STLA Small, with a range up to 500 kilometers/300 miles ● STLA Medium, with a range up to 700 kilometers/440 miles ● STLA Large, with a range up to 800 kilometers/500 miles ● STLA Frame, with a range up to 800 kilometers/500 miles   - Stellantis recognizes that CTP (cell-to-pack) combined with cobalt-free batteries are the two most important technologies available today to make affordable electric cars that compete with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars in price and availability. However, Stellantis will delay the introduction of these two technologies until 2024. Moreover, only in 2026 the TCO (total cost of ownership) of Stellantis' electric cars will match ICE cars   - With this decision, Stellantis leaves an open door for Chinese automakers to arrive and dominate the European EV market very soon   Original Source : https://pushevs.com/2021/07/08/stellantis-delays-affordable-electric-cars-until-2026/   STELLANTIS TO INVEST €30 BILLION IN E-MOBILITY   - In the US, performance brand Dodge plans to launch its first electric muscle car in 2024, Ram will sell an electric version the 1500 in 2024. Jeep wants to offer plug-in hybrids in all SUV segments by 2024, the Wrangler 4xe is already sold out for this year. The Jeep Wagoneer is to be targeted as an all-electric premium SUV primarily for the US market.   - In addition to the gigafactories of ACC (the joint venture together with Total subsidiary Saft), the cells are to be sourced from CATL, BYD, SVOLT, Samsung and LG Energy Solution, preferably from their European plants. The 50 GWh for the USA are to be procured from partners, while names are not yet mentioned since final negotiations are reportedly still underway. In 2030, the demand will be the 260 GWh mentioned above, of which more than 170 GWh will be in Europe. Half of this – 85 GWh – is to be covered by ACC. Either ACC will have to expand the factories in Douvrai, Kaiserslautern and Termoli or build further gigafactories.   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/08/stellantis-to-invest-e30-billion-in-e-mobility   VAUXHALL EV-ONLY BY 2028 AS STELLANTIS RAMPS UP ELECTRIFICATION   - The company – whose brands are Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall – has targeted low-emissions vehicles (LEV) accounting for more than 70% of its European sales and 40% of its US sales by 2030. The LEV term includes both electric cars and plug-in hybrids.   - Opel – including Vauxhall in the UK – will become an electric-only brand in Europe by the end of 2028 in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The firm will also expand into the Chinese market with a range of EVs. The German brand has also confirmed that it will revive the Manta name for a new EV. Opel has previously shown an electric restomod version of the Manta, but a teaser of this latest car shows it will be entirely unrelated, with the concept's low-slung retro silhouette making way for a high-riding and altogether more SUV-esque proposition.   - , Fiat will become electric-only by 2030, with the exact date determined by customer demand, and will launch a new dedicated EV in 2024. Its performance offshoot, Abarth, will also go electric-only.   - Stellantis has also released 'statements' for all 14 of its brands to reflect the electrification approach of each. Alfa Romeo's statement is "From 2024, Alfa Becomes Alfa e-Romeo", although the firm has yet to specify exactly what this means.   Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-manufacturing/vauxhall-ev-only-2028-stellantis-ramps-electrification   STELLANTIS INVESTS IN ITS FIRST ALL-EV PLANT   - The automaker plans to devote its factory in Ellesmere Port in the UK to electric LCVs (light commercial vehicles) and passenger EVs, with the plant slated to produce models under four brands: Opel, Vauxhall, Citroën, and Peugeot.   - The plant will receive a new body shop, an on-site battery-pack assembly facility, and an upgraded general assembly.   - When it comes to light commercial vehicles, the Ellesmere Port plant will produce battery-electric versions of the Opel and Vauxhall Combo-e and its passenger variant, as well as the Citroën e-Berlingo along with its passenger version, and the Peugeot e-Partner with its own passenger model.   Original Source : https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a36954284/stellantis-first-ev-plant/   THE STELLANTIS BRANDS HAVE NEW 'GREEN' SLOGANS AND THEY'RE PRETTY TERRIBLE   Abarth – “Heating Up People, But Not the Planet”         Alfa Romeo – “From 2024, Alfa Becomes Alfa e-Romeo” Chrysler – “Clean Technology for a New Generation of Families” Citroën – “Citroën Electric: Well-Being for All!” Dodge – “Tear Up the Streets… Not the Planet” DS Automobiles – “The Art of Travel, Magnified” Fiat – “It's Only Green When It's Green for All” Jeep® – “Zero Emission Freedom” Lancia – “The Most Elegant Way to Protect the Planet” Maserati – “The Best in Performance Luxury, Electrified” Opel/Vauxhall – “Green is the New Cool” Peugeot – “Turning Sustainable Mobility into Quality Time” Ram – “Built to Serve a Sustainable Planet” Commercial Vehicles – “The Global Leader in e-Commercial Vehicles”    Original Source : https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-stellantis-brands-have-new-green-slogans-and-theyre-pretty-terrible/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   If you had to buy one electric car today and it was the only car you were allowed to drive for the next three years, what would you choose? It's  Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VOLKSWAGEN SHEDS BUGATTI, MAKER OF OVER-THE-TOP SPORTS CARS   - Volkswagen said Monday that it was giving up control of Bugatti, the storied automaker whose absurdly expensive hypercars are worshiped by aficionados but seemed incongruous at a company better known for economical Golfs and Passats. Bugatti, whose Chiron model starts at close to $3 million, will become part of a joint venture between Volkswagen's Porsche unit and Rimac, a young Croatian company that has made a name for itself doing design and engineering projects for large carmakers.   - The deal undoes a major legacy of Ferdinand Piëch, who dominated Volkswagen for two decades and built the company into a global empire. Volkswagen's purchase of Bugatti out of bankruptcy in 1998, long before it owned Porsche, was widely seen as an indulgence by Mr. Piëch with questionable business logic   - Oliver Blume, the chief executive of Porsche, acknowledged Monday that the deal removes a distraction for Volkswagen and allows the company to focus on more important tasks.    Original Source : https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/05/business/volkswagen-bugatti.html   VW OFFLOADS BUGATTI TO RIMAC TO FORM NEW EV COMPANY BUGATTI-RIMAC   - The company recently unveiled the Nevera, a hypercar powered by a 120kWh battery pack and four motors to achieve a staggering 1.4MW of power, which is about 1,914 horsepower. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in 1.85 seconds and has a top speed of 258 mph. The Nevera is expected to be the fastest sports car, a spot previously held by the Bugatti Chiron's.   - Rimac's meteoric rise from bootstrapping in a garage in 2009 to building supercars with one of the most desirable and well-known car brands demonstrates how electric vehicles are beginning to take over the luxury and sports car market. It's not just about doing what's right for the environment – it's about pioneering speed in the future of automobiles. Along with this announcement, Rimac said it would separate the development, production and supply of battery systems, drivetrains and other EV components into a new entity owned by Rimac Group called Rimac Technology, which will work independently with other global car manufacturers.   - Mate Rimac will continue to hold his 37% share in Rimac Group, with Hyundai Motor Group holding the same 12% and other investors at 27%, according to a statement from the company. Porsche recently upped its stake in Rimac from 15% to 24%, but its total ownership doesn't give It a controlling interest in the new EV company, the companies told FT.   Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/05/vw-offloads-bugatti-to-rimac-to-form-new-ev-company-bugatti-rimac/   TESLA MODEL 3 IS OUTRIGHT BESTSELLING VEHICLE IN UK   - The UK saw plugin electric vehicles take 17.2% share of the auto market in June 2021, up from 9.5% in June 2020. The Tesla Model 3 was the UK's overall best selling vehicle (of any powertrain) in the month, with 5,468 units sold. Overall auto market volume stood at 186,000 units in June, down around 16% from long term seasonal norms.   - 10.7% full battery electrics (BEVs) and 6.5% plugin hybrids (PHEVs), which is a swing towards BEVs from recent weightings   - Full battery electric vehicles outsold old-school (non electric assist) diesel vehicles for the first time ever, selling 32% more volume. Old school diesels took just 8.1% of the market, their lowest score in decades.   - combustion vehicles (petrol plus diesel) were also at a new record low of 54.5% share, from 76.3% a year ago. They are on track to drop below 50% within the next couple of months.   Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/07/05/tesla-model-3-is-outright-bestselling-vehicle-in-uk-plugin-evs-take-17-2-share/   VW DROPS I.D. PRICES IN THE UK   - In the UK, Volkswagen`s ID.3 and ID.4 models are now offered with configurable trim levels and a range of option packs across all derivatives. Under the new pricing, two more variants have become eligible for the Government's Plug-in Vehicle Grant.  The new pricing strategy significantly affects the ID.3. Under the new pricing, two more variants have become eligible for the Government's Plug-in Vehicle Grant, which brings the total to six. The ID.3 Family Pro and Family Pro Performance are now both priced just under the £35,000 threshold for the £2,500 grant. These models, now priced at £33,640 and £34,960 respectively. Of course now with their new grant eligibility, these prices fall to £31,140 and £32,460 OTR.   - the highly-equipped Max and range-topping Tour have been reduced by £3,800. The Tour boasts a 77 kWh battery and 340-mile range (WLTP, combined) and is priced from £38,800.   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/07/05/vw-drops-i-d-prices-in-the-uk/   ID.3 AND ID.4 RECEIVE WIDE RANGE OF CHANGES AS MODEL YEAR 2022 VEHICLES OPEN FORORDER   - This new structure considerably increases the flexibility of the ID.3 and ID.4 in the customer's ordering process. For example, previously it was not possible to configure an Augmented Reality Head-up display on any ID.3 model other than the Max and Tour. Now, a customer can choose any trim level and add the Infotainment Package Plus to receive the AR HUD, alongside the additional speakers that are part of the pack. Just as before, the different trim levels will still feature pre-determined packs as standard equipment, but now customers can choose to add additional packs to cater to their individual needs.   Original Source : https://www.vwpress.co.uk/en-gb/releases/4561   THE STELLANTIS EV DAY IS COMING. HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW   - Stellantis, the world's fourth-largest car maker, will host its EV Day on Thursday and unveil more details around its electrification strategy. The company, formed earlier this year through the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot, already has an electric-vehicle strategy, which it set out in April.   - The group has grown market share in Europe so far in 2021, accounting for 16.8% of new BEV registrations in the region from January to May, according to automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt. That puts it second behind Volkswagen — 25.7% — and ahead of the Renault-Nissan alliance with 12.3% and Tesla with 11.5%.   - BoA analysts expected Stellantis to deliver a “bullish message” on Thursday to make it clear to investors the company wouldn't be left behind in the electric revolution. “In our view, the only thing that Stellantis has to do is to put the various puzzle pieces together and explain some more details on essential strategy items (i.e. on battery chemistries, cell technology, cost assumptions for the EV line up, differences in planning between North America and Europe, capex requirements, etc.),” they said.   - Stellantis is also reportedly set to announce plans to produce electric vans at its Ellesmere Port factory in northwest England.   Original Source : https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-stellantis-ev-day-is-coming-heres-what-to-know-11625491119   VOLVO, DAIMLER, TRATON TO DEVELOP CHARGING NETWORK FOR HEAVY-DUTY TRUCKS IN EUROPE   - Volvo Group, Daimler Truck and Traton Group have signed a  non-binding agreement to install and operate a high-performance public charging  network for battery electric heavy-duty long-haul trucks and coaches in Europe. With plans to start operations in 2022, the partners intend  to invest together 500 million Euros to install and operate at least 1,700  high-performance green energy charging points close to highways as well as at  logistic and destination points, within five years from the establishment of  the joint venture (JV).   - The future JV is planned to operate under its own corporate identity  based in Amsterdam, Netherlands.   - Battery electric vehicle fleet operators will be  able to leverage both fast charging tailored to the 45-minute mandatory rest  period in Europe focusing on long-distance transport—the highest priority of  the future JV—and also charge overnight.   Original Source : https://www.fleetowner.com/emissions-efficiency/electric-vehicles/press-release/21169044/volvo-daimler-and-traton-to-develop-charging-network-for-heavyduty-trucks-in-europe   TESLA MODEL Y STANDARD RANGE FOR HONG KONG MAY CONFIRM LFP USE RUMORS   - CNEVPost published in June that the deal Tesla made with CATL to extend their LFP contract up to 2025 would include sourcing these cells to the Model Y. Deliveries for the electric crossover with these batteries would start in July.   When we check Tesla's website about the Model Y Standard Range for Hong Kong, the company says that deliveries will start in September. The estimated range for the vehicle is higher than that for the Model 3 Standard Range Plus, which would achieve 448 km (278 mi).   - That's a 10% increase compared to the Model 3 SR+ value.   - Although the Model Y Standard Range for Hong Kong could confirm the LFP rumors, the price and range differences suggest that Model Y Standard Range may have 2170 cells. However, if that is the case, Tesla could also offer this derivative in the US.   - Another feasible explanation for the disparities is that Tesla developed a larger LFP battery pack for the Model Y.   Original Source : https://www.autoevolution.com/news/tesla-model-y-standard-range-for-hong-kong-may-confirm-lfp-use-rumors-164650.html   NEW CITROËN Ë-SPACETOURER GETS £14K DROP Original Source : https://evobsession.com/new-citroen-e-spacetourer-range-pricing-specs-in-the-uk-entry-level-model-attracting-2500-plug-in-car-grant-picg/   WILL THE AUDI E-TRON GT FACE THE SAME RECALL ISSUES AS THE PORSCHE TAYCAN? A few musings on how UFO's keep cropping up in the area in which I live. On the morning of Tuesday 3 May 1977 at around 1am, what must surely rank as the largest UFO ever reported was allegedly seen over Wirral.A cabby working for CC Taxis was parked up on Wallasey's Penkett Road, waiting for a woman to pay her fare. The moon was full and Penkett Road was bathed in its silvery light. A shadow fell across the neighbourhood and the cabby looked up to see an immense black disc-shaped object blotting out the moon as it slowly moved east towards the river. The woman the cabby had been waiting for came out of her house to pay her fare and also saw the gigantic object overhead. A man walking his dog on nearby Caithness Drive saw the gigantic UFO and at the exact same time on the other side of Wirral, a young courting couple who had been sitting in a parked car on Caldy Road also witnessed the eclipse of the full moon by the UFO. As more and more sightings of the giant in the sky came in, it was established that the craft must have been around ten miles in diameter. It was seen by people in Liverpool, Chester, Flint and Ellesmere Port. September 2020 - 02: Green targets and home delivery growth boosts CV sector despite Covid-19 hit

Trucks, vans, buses, taxis, electric vans, fire engines, ambulances, waste disposal trucks – Britain’s commercial vehicle sector is very diverse. While challenged by the Covid-19 crisis there are bright spots, as home deliveries increase and commercial transport reduces carbon emissions. Will Stirling reports. The UK’s commercial vehicle (CV) sector comprises a nice mix of the old and the new, from Leyland Trucks whose parent company made its first truck in 1896 to start-up Arrival that is already tipped to be a world leader in manufacturing electric vans and buses. Depressed by the COVID-19 crisis, CVs are still essential to business, so the sector has weathered the storm far better than mainstream automotive and some companies are doing well. Industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed in August that the light CV market (i.e. vans up to 3.5 tonnes), grew in July for the first time since January. This was up 7.1% on the same month in 2019, attributing the return to work for sectors like construction where vans are needed. Two megatrends are helping the CV and light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector: the growth of home delivery and net-zero carbon targets. A sector hit hard is bus manufacture, as the pandemic dried up demand for public transport, this is only now slowly returning. In this automotive report, we offer a round-up of the commercial vehicle industry with an optimistic view from an automotive expert, Professor David Bailey. Vauxhall Vivaro Vauxhall, part of the PSG Group, manufactures left and right-hand drive Vivaro vans for its Opel, Peugeot and Citroen brands from its Luton factory. Luton went down to one shift during lockdown but returned to two shifts and then three shifts in July as demand for the popular van grew, pulling 200 employees from the quieter Ellesmere Port factory which manufactures the Opel Astra. Luton produced 55,000 vans in 2019 down from 62,000 in 2018, as the plant completely retooled in 2019 for the manufacture of the latest Vivaro model. Headcount is now up to 1750 and production is at full capacity. Some big orders have been placed for Vauxhall’s new fully electric Vivaro-e vans. Openreach, the BT division, has placed an order of 270 Vivaro-e vans and 9 Corsa-e-cars and in July the car company signed a deal with British Gas to supply 1,000 e-vans, the biggest commercial EV fleet in Britain to date. Leyland Trucks US truck builder PACCAR owns DAF, the owner of the Leyland Truck brand, which manufactures circa 19,000 medium and heavy-duty trucks per year from its Preston factory. All European DAF plants in Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK implemented big Covid-response factory measures from March to April and recommenced operations on 27 April. “For the moment we are less concerned about production figures,” said Harry Wolters. “Instead, the safety of DAF and Leyland Trucks employees is our number one priority and it is why the production volume is still relatively low. We will only crank it up when it is safe to do so. London Electric Vehicle Company Originally called The London Taxi Company under then parent Manganese Bronze, until ownership by Chinese automotive group Geely changed it to LEVC, this Coventry firm has always exclusively manufactured the iconic London ‘Hackney cab’ taxis. Responding to the call for Net Zero by 2040 or 2050 depending on the specific industry targets, LEVC chose a fully electric motor variant only and will now manufacture an electric van, the VN5, with up to 5.5m3 capacity and a gross payload of 830kg built on a modified chassis of the classic taxi. VN5 has a ‘zero emissions capable’ range of over 300 miles delivered by LEVC’s eCity electric technology, and its capacity easily accommodates two Euro sized pallets. As more short-range and last-mile logistics firms move to zero emissions, prospects for the VN5 are bright. Alexander Dennis (ADL) The bus manufacturer, part of the NFI Group that owns US bus brands and UK coachbuilder Plaxton, has factories in Guildford, Falkirk and Scarborough and until the pandemic, was riding high with group revenues breaking £500m. Sadly, the virus put the brakes on new sales as thousands of people shunned public transport and orders for buses in the UK and abroad dried up, and the firm announced 650 job losses in July. This could be avoided or reduced if the cash-strapped government fulfils its earlier pledge to buy 4,000 electric buses, a large slice of which would go to ADL. This decision is currently delayed. So, for now, the redundancies are set to go ahead and this great British company is facing a troubled future. Wright Bus Ryse Hydrogen, a hydrogen production and refuelling business owned by Jo Bamford, son of JCB owner Lord Anthony Bamford, rescued troubled Northern Irish bus manufacturer Wrightbus in 2018. Wrightbus had pioneered hydrogen-powered buses and pre-Covid had a small number operating in London when it fell into difficulties. Bamford saw the neat fit with Ryse Hydrogen and pounced, saving hundreds of jobs at Wrightbus. It now needs orders and Ryse and Wrightbus have presented a business plan to the government to subsidise the manufacture of 3,000 new hydrogen buses while outlining how the UK could become a ‘global leader in hydrogen technologies’, that would they claim could create 1,000 new jobs at Wrightbus and 150 at Ryse Hydrogen. Arrival Arrival describes itself as one of the UK’s largest unicorns – businesses with a future value over US$1bn within an unspecified timescale. A quick look at its new electric Arrival Bus gives credence to such hype, and its business plan goes way beyond manufacturing. As well as the bus and the Arrival Generation 2 electric vans that secured a whopping 10,000 unit order from delivery group UPS in January, the new company wants to create an ‘Integrated Public Transportation Ecosystem’ that includes buses, car sharing, taxis, delivery robots, charging infrastructure, micro-factories for production and digital services, where it wants to help cities meet net-zero emissions targets. Angloco Late in 2019, the UK’s oldest manufacturer of fire vehicles secured a big deal to replace and service most of the UK Ministry of Defence’s fire fleet. The £30m order comes via the Defence Fire and Rescue Project – a large outsourcing sales and support contract recently awarded to Capita plc. Under the contract, Angloco will supply more than 80 modern fire fighting vehicles and support them in the UK and globally for the next 12 years. Before the MoD deal, Angloco reported strong growth in 2019 and a second factory opening, a 12,000sq/ft unit opposite its 30,000sq/ft headquarters in Batley, West Yorkshire – that will be capable of manufacturing 100 fire engines a year.

Dr Victoria Carr (Headteacher at Woodlands Primary School): How one headteacher is coping with partial reopening.

The Teachers' Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2020 67:21

EPISODE NOTES In this episode, Claire talks over the internet with Dr Victoria Carr, headteacher at Woodlands Primary School in Ellesmere Port. Victoria discusses how her difficult and sometimes distressing childhood meant that she would spend a lot of time reading and learning on her own before she even started at school. This head-start gave her a good grounding and the words of her reception teacher, ‘this girl is university material’, stuck with her and motivated her throughout her educational journey. Although she had (and still has) a keen interest in the military – in particular a desire to fly Chinook helicopters – Victoria moved into teaching and leadership with an ambition to motivate and inspire children and her staff to seek and fulfil their dreams. Victoria discusses the challenges of leadership in this period of disruption within education, how she supports the pupils and staff in her school, and how the coronavirus has led to her having to be more creative with the latest round of recruitment. She also shares how she strives to help, support and motivate others to be the best they can having learned from her own experiences and seen through her own life what the power of words can achieve.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Words really can have a long-lasting impact. Victoria talks about how just five words from her reception class teacher, and the implicit belief about what was entirely possible in her future, have stuck with her and helped motivate her throughout her life. Victoria talks about how being where she is today is proof that teachers and those involved in education really do shape lives and that what we say to children absolutely matters. Develop teams with critical thinking. Building a culture where people are actively encouraged to constructively question and challenge decisions and the way things work means that a team will always be growing and developing. As well as this, the team members themselves will be growing and developing personally and professionally too. Sticking to the status quo can sometimes be the best course of action, but if nobody is questioning it, nothing will improve where gains could, perhaps, be made. Invest in everyone. Creating opportunities for everyone - not just teachers - to develop both personally and professionally is an investment in that person which can realise potentially significant benefits both for them, the team and, ultimately, the organisation as a whole. Do what’s best for you and your school. Often, those who develop and implement policies in government are not best placed to have an understanding of the impact of the policy at a ‘ground level’, or an appreciation of how different each individual school can be. Leaders, now more than ever before, can find themselves having to make difficult decisions. However, taking a course of action that you know is best, even if it might be a tough one, will usually always be the right thing to do.   BEST MOMENTS “I became a teacher and I've been teaching now 23 years and it is a job that I absolutely love. All of the amazing people I've met through that journey and the things I've done, I don't regret any of that now. I do wonder how my life would have been if I'd been a pilot...” “I have this philosophy… that when I'm an old lady - hopefully I'll live to become a really, really old lady when I'm 90 - that I'll be able to look back and think that I was lucky enough to seize every opportunity that came my way, that I've got no regrets and that I can truly say I've lived my life and that I've touched lives as I've gone through in a positive way.” “I know that the teacher who said to my mum and my nan when I was five that I was ‘university material’ did change the direction of my life because, before that, nobody in my family had ever thought about university. It was just never a thing.” “Back in the 70s, everybody respected the teaching profession. They were well respected. So my grandparents were of an era that teachers were utterly respected.” “Now that I'm a head, I try to make sure that everything I say to the children in our school is personalised and positive and in some way transformational both to their parents and their children.” “I wouldn't want to lead ninety-odd people who are just doing my bidding. I want them to actively challenge me because I want to be the best I can be and I want to model that. It can be a really collaborative thing that everybody does and that way we get the best out of everyone.” “I don't just invest time in teachers. I think you should invest time in people because they are my team and I really want them to feel fulfilled and challenged. I think it just empowers your team.” “If you can help someone, even in a small way, to realise their dreams then is there anything better? I don't know if there's any better thing than helping people to effect their dreams or their passions in life.” “We'll just be adaptable. Because one thing's for certain: in my leadership journey of eight years, I do know and, in fact, in my life if I'm honest with you, you just have to adapt. If you want to survive with your marbles, you just need to adapt.”     VALUABLE RESOURCES The Power of Language – TED Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/victoria_carr_the_power_of_language_everyday_heroes Victoria Carr – Twitter: https://twitter.com/headofwoodlands Classroom Secrets Kids: https://kids.classroomsecrets.co.uk The Teachers’ Podcast: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheTeachersPodcast/ Classroom Secrets Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ClassroomSecretsLimited/ Classroom Secrets website: https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/ LIFE/work balance campaign: https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/lifeworkbalance-and-wellbeing-in-education-campaign-2019/   ABOUT THE HOST Claire Riley Claire, alongside her husband Ed, is one of the directors of Classroom Secrets, a company she founded in 2013 and which provides outstanding differentiated resources for teachers, schools, parents and tutors worldwide. Today, Monday 29th June marks the 85th birthday of Merseyside organist DAVE NICHOLAS Dave was born on June 29th 1935, very aptly, opposite the Plaza Cinema in Birkenhead, Merseyside, that had a 3/12 Compton Theatre organ. His parents moved in 1938 to Tranmere, Birkenhead, where, at the age of nineteen, he started playing organ professionally at the Plaza Cinema during the ice cream intervals. He played there for five months but as the organ was sadly fading at that time he had to finish. Dave had organ playing lessons from Ian Hamilton and Frank Gordon at the Ritz Cinema in Birkenhead in 1956. Dave started playing at the Sandon Hotel Liverpool in 1957 and at The Knot Hotel in Ellesmere Port, and The Charing Cross Club in Birkenhead in 1960. He played in local clubs and also played at Butlins in 1961 and in 1964 at Clacton Park Dance Festival where he played ‘Fun Jenja' which became known as ‘March of the Mods'. Then after a break in September 1967 he played at the Regent Hotel Blackburn. Then next came, Woods Bolton and demonstrating Conn organs he played the first three manual Organ at the Frankfurt show. Dave also performed a couple of duets with none other than Blackpool's very own, Reginald Dixon, at Kingston upon Thames. Dave went back to Butlins in June 1969 till 1973. During the Butlin years he was at the Metropole during the winter playing at Skegness , Filey, and then Clacton for three years in 1974 also touring for Yamaha. During the summer, Dave played at Scarborough and also for Robinson Cleaver. Having had to stay at home because his father was ill he started with Rushworths Music Store from 1976 until 1977. Then after many varied venues he played for Lord Lichfield at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool. From that time in June 1987 and onwards Dave has had solo residency at the Philharmonic hall and has been in this unique situation with the oldest orchestra in the world. The original hall unfortunately burnt down in 1933. However the new hall, built in 1938, has a unique rising cinema screen and is the only surviving one of its kind. This screen is just the job for projecting on to it vintage silent movies that Dave can accompany on the organ as used to happen in cinemas across the country early in the twentieth century. The orchestra was given Royal Patronage in 1957. Dave is unique in being the only resident solo organist in a concert hall in the country. Dave has recorded 4 LPs, cassettes and CD at the Philharmonic Hall between 1987 and 1997. May we all wish our distinguished group member, a very, very, happy birthday, good health, and many more years ahead in his wonderful career. The Children In Need Appeal has been in full flight … with Terry Wogan at the helm…..WHY?....there are many top class young presenters out there so why do we have to constantly put up with Sir Terry with his unfunny quips looking totally ill at ease in the suit he has squeezed into….I’ve always failed to see what it is about Wogan…totally talentless as far as I’m concerned…call it a day Tel and give us all a break. At least Brucie is talented…. but well past his sell-by date on Strictly Come Dancing….he’s painful. Blackpool hired Gary Barlow and Jonathan Ross to switch the lights on….I’m O.K. with Gary but why they book that grinning village idiot I’ll never know…again I wish someone would tell me what talent he has…Oh Yes he’s a chat show host…ANYONE can do that…..my point is proved in as much as the Blackpool Council decided to charge a tenner to see these celebs…and LOST 375 Grand!!...which make you wonder what Mr Ross’s fee was? When I was working on Radio Merseyside I was asked by the people of Ellesmere Port if I would attend their annual function and crown the May Queen…I felt quite honoured…so along I went and was treated like a local celeb….they then asked me what the fee was…to which I told them a nice cup of tea would do the trick…they then said that the year before they had another local radio personality (who will remain nameless) who charged them £750….and THI is the problem with the planet. ..And finally someone sent me an article from the Daily Mail regarding my mate…wrestler Adrian Street…who once had a novelty wrestling match with Jimmy Savile back in 1971…they were trying to promote Jimmy as a tough guy who had trained with the Marines etc…I remember Adrian telling me about it…he wasn’t happy and made sure Mr. Savile never stepped in the ring again…he nearly killed him…which is why I never sent Jimmy any of the records I wrote and produced for my violent friend….. …. Don't Forget….Don's been working on a doowop song for a new friend in the States….His name is Doowop Joe Conroy and he has a internet radio station in North Carolina...he checked out Don's website and noticed Don writes novelty songs. He asked Don to write one about all the doowop groups….….the song is called “DooWop Days” and can be found on YouTube……
