Allan Crockford  in conversation with David Eastaugh http://www.thegalileo7.co.uk/ The Prisoners - British 1960s garage/mod/R'n'B-inspired band formed in early 1980 in Chatham, Kent, England as a three-piece. James Taylor joined early 1982 after he saw The Prisoners for the first time around Christmas 1981. Signed to Countdown (an offshot / subsidiary of Stiff Records) in the second half of 1985, but later decided to disband in 1986 following the parent label's bankruptcy. Last gig before several re-unions in the 1990's was on 18th September 1986.

Si vous avez aimé Robert Wyatt et Moondog, Borja Flames vous plaira… Quant au Nimbus Sextet, c'est la nouvelle scène jazz anglaise qui s'invite chez vous. #SessionLive1 Borja Flames pour la sortie de l'album Nuevo Medievo. Il a trois cerveaux, mille vies, passées ou parallèles et il s'appelle Borja Flames. Espagnol, Parisien, Bourguignon, cosmonaute, on ne sait plus. Sa tête est celle d'un pope, d'un roi, d'un lion, d'un faune ou d'un centaure mélancolique. Il est bien habillé, avec des trous de boulettes et sa barbe : mérovingienne. On l'a connu dans June et Jim dont il était la face sud (à l'autre hémisphère : Marion Cousin) duo récemment transfiguré sous le nom Catalina Matorral, vraie pastorale électronique. On l'a vu pour la première fois rebattre ses cartes en 2016 avec Nacer Blanco, premier album sous son nom dont les horlogeries pompettes, les totems façon Tour de Pise et les madrigaux osseux évoquaient Moondog, Robert Wyatt et le facteur Cheval, les uns dans les autres, n'importe comment. Après quoi Rojo Vivo (2018) entre house toute blême et prédications ténébreuses nous fit peur et plaisir et danser. Nuevo Medievo est encore plus beau, plus étonnant. Dès le début, chanté sur la pointe des pieds, la voix argentée d'effets robotiques sur une descente de lit synthétique piquée de cymbales, on se sent tête nue dans un vaste cabinet d'étoiles, on est captivé. Il y a des rayons laser, des paroles d'oracle au vocoder. Paul Loiseau, le batteur morse, fait sonner toute la cuisine comme un orchestre de calculatrices défoncées, puis Borja Flames accélère le pouls du disque d'une diction de présentateur de journal télévisé mal luné sur un fond jungle avant que Marion Cousin et Rachel Langlais fassent tout chavirer, qui d'une vocalise saturnienne, qui d'un synthé bizarrement réglé. À partir de quoi partout tombent des hits, des vrais, en pluie d'astéroïdes.   Negro Negro est suave, mystérieuse, émouvante, surprenante comme un baiser qu'on n'espérait plus. On voudrait n'écouter plus qu'elle, mais vient alors Magnetismo qui rend débile de joie. Puis Marioneta, sec et aéré comme du Prince période Sign O'The Times, et sur lequel on n'a pas fini de danser, même seul avec sa tête sous le bras. Nuevo Medievo va ainsi de tout son long, raide et groovy, cérébral mais explosant de tumeurs rêveuses. Puissamment divertissant, rempli de rythmiques impaires, de chorales d'ordinateurs, de claviers qui glissent et font glisser. Nuevo Medievo rappelle un peu la scène synth-wave et le post punk ibérique des années 80. Il évoque aussi des versions lofi des tubes SF panoramiques du Franco Battiato de No Time No Space (mondes lointainissimes, recherches sonores, refrains maousses), l'Arthur Russel disco, ou même Porque te vas, oui oui, Sade, des faces B Motown jouées à l'IRCAM un soir de franc laisser-aller, Marvin Gaye et Tammy Terrel en plein slow sous les néons anachroniques d'un bar à chicha ou les B.O de Miami Vice importées dans les rushes de Blade Runner. Si Nuevo Medievo comme tous les disques de Borja Flames, mélomane cannibale, convoque un certain nombre d'autres d'artistes, c'est pour organiser entre eux des rencontres inattendues, et les disséquer chacun dans une pulsion à la fois scientifique, érotique, amoureuse et gastronomique avant de s'en affranchir et de tirer dans toutes les diagonales des traits authentiquement inouïs. Lancé par le claviériste Joe Nichols, l'ensemble s'est ainsi distingué, il y a deux ans, avec Dreams Fullfield, un premier LP truffé d'arrangements entêtants, avant d'illustrer un remix pour STR4TA, la galette rare groove de Bluey et Gilles Peterson. Fort de pointures comme Jonny Enser et Mischa Stevens, le Nimbus Sextet revient  avec le significatif Forward Thinker. Soigneusement construit, ce nouvel opus confirme un goût évident pour les sonorités cuivrées et pour le jazz-funk. Todo comenzó en Inglaterra a finales de los 80s con la escena underground denominada “Rare Groove”, la cual se trataba de DJs que, desde programas de radio y discotecas, mezclaban temas desconocidos de Jazz Funk, Fusion Jazz, Disco, Soul, etc. De esta escena fue gestándose el Acid Jazz, poco a poco decenas de grupos fueron apareciendo por Londres y luego por el resto del Reino Unido, y a principios de los 90s logra obtener éxito comercial y popularidad internacional, sobre todo gracias a grupos como Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Us3 o Incognito (Aunque estos últimos estaba más cercanos a la creciente escena del House) y su fama se extendió hasta mediados de década, luego llego la decadencia del genero y por consiguiente la desaparición de varios de aquellos artistas, otros continuaron alejándose de la escena del Acid Jazz hacia otros ritmos. Ahora bien, que es el Acid Jazz?. Se trata de una fusión de funk, soul setentero, Jazz, Hip Hop, ritmos latinos… Tremenda cantidad de sonidos diferentes genera que haya mucha variedad de estilos dentro de este género, tenemos artistas con sonido mas “setentero” como James Taylor Quartet o Corduroy, The Brand New Heavies con un sonido más Funky-Disco, otros incorporan ideas propias del Hip Hop con la incorporación de raperos, uso de samplers y cajas de ritmo. A highly entertaining chat with Ed Piller, a lifelong cricket fan, who played u14s for Essex, but his career as a budding professional leg-spinner tailed off as selection chances fell away. HIs love of the game never left him and he tells us about following England all over the world and why he is no fan of the Barmy Army. "People Get Ready (We're Moving On)" es un disco con aires cinematográficos y referencias a la música de los 70s. Música divertida, simpática, energética y desenfadada. En la segunda parte escucharemos un grabación de Swing Out Sister de 2004 titulado "Where our love grows", que comparte muchos elementos y referencias musicales con el disco del JTQ.

Paul Carr is Professor in Popular Music Analysis at the ATRiuM, University of South Wales, in Cardiff. His research interests focus on the areas of musicology, widening access, the music industry and pedagogical frameworks for music related education – publishing extensively in all of these areas. He is also an experienced performing musician, having toured and recorded with artists as diverse as The James Taylor Quartet and ex Miles Davis saxophonist Bob Berg. His most recent books are an edited collection for Ashgate (Frank Zappa and the And: A Contextual Analysis of his Legacy (2013)), a monograph on Sting (From Northern Lights to Fields of Gold, published in 2017.

En este episodio Lester Cuba presenta una selección músical con un denominador común: temas con reminiscencias cinematográficas pero que no pertenecen a ningún film. Son creaciones de jovenes autores grabadas en este siglo y huerfanas de celuloide. La mayor parte de los músicos participantes son italianos, y no por casualidad, ya que Italia es cuna de excelentes compositores de bandas sonoras. Todos ellos dominan el código de la música incidental de las decadas de 1960 y 1970.
