The Pensacola Foo Foo Festival Committee announces the launch of the 2024 Foo Foo Festival website, detailing the day-by-day calendar of events for the 11th annual iteration, with more events to be added in the coming months, including those presented by Friends of Foo. This year's Foo Foo season is highlighted by the 2024 grant recipients including the 309 Punk Project, Choral Society of Pensacola, Fiesta Pensacola, Japan-America Society of Northwest Florida, Legal Services of North Florida, Night Moves Inc, PenArts, Pensacola Museum of Art, Pensacola Opera, Pensacola State College, The University of West Florida Historic Trust, Wide Angle Photo Club, and WSRE TV Foundation. The Foo Foo Fest Committee invites local organizations that are hosting events that fit the nature of the Foo Foo Festival, occurring during the scheduled event dates of Oct. 31 - Nov. 11, 2024, to submit to become a Friend of Foo. Submissions for 2024 Friends of Foo are open now through Friday, Oct. 4, 2024. Becoming a Friend of Foo adds organization events to the overall event lineup and Foo Foo Fest website, as well as integrates them into Foo Foo Fest's regional advertising campaign. This was an amazing experience. Several days before New Years Eve 2023 we saw a presser about the Japan America Society of Iowa and a gathering at the Yamanashi Peace Bell which is located near the Iowa Supreme Court Building, next to the Shattered Glass Sculpture. This bell was a gift of gratitude from the Yamanashi Prefecture to honor all of Iowa for assisting that state to get back on its feet following a devastating 1959 typhoon that impacted its hog industry.  My guest is Yoko Tanaka the Executive Director of the Japan America Society of Iowa who explains what we were doing early in the morning of the last day of 2023...and in freezing weather. Recently I aired an interview about the FACT Program - Father's and Children Together - a highly effective program at SCI Phoenix that brings incarcerated men together with their kids in a program designed to strengthen their bond. I spoke to some of the Moms and youth who participated. For this segment, I speak to a former lifer who was present at the graduation. The annual Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival takes place tomorrow. Founded in 2009 as a collaboration between the Japan-America Society of Tennessee, the General Consulate of Japan, and the Mayor's Office, the festival is a celebration of Japanese culture, from martial arts to traditional music to wood block prints. Today, we're talking about the history of the festival, what it means to the community, and the symbolism of cherry blossoms with folks who helped found the festival, as well as tree and beautification experts. But first, Franklin Pride narrowly survived a 5-4 vote by the Franklin Board of Mayor and Aldermen after a passionate public comment period. Rob Buscher, Board Chair of the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival is a film and media specialist, educator, arts administrator, and published author who has worked in non-profit arts organizations for over a decade. As a person of biracial Japanese American heritage who is deeply involved in his community, Rob also has an expertise in cultural sensitivity training, community organizing, and advocacy issues related to the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Robʼs expertise is Japanese and Asian American & Pacific Islander Cinema although he has worked as a professional film programmer, critic, and lecturer across a variety of fields. Some of his career highlights include growing Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival into an internationally recognized leader in the film festival circuit (2013-2019), developing the Japanese Cinema and Asian American Studies curriculum at Arcadia University (2012-2018), and co-founding Zipangu Fest - the UKʼs first Japanese Film Festival (2009-2014). Yuki Tokuda is a ballet dancer, choreographer and teacher, based in the Twin Cities.She is originally from Japan and was trained under Mikiko Dei, Hideo Fukagawa andJun Ishii, internationally recognized dancers, teachers and competition judges. Shemoved to the US in 2000 to continue her training in New York at the Joffrey BalletSchool. Ms. Tokuda has danced professionally with USA Ballet, Peoria Ballet,Metropolitan Ballet and she was the principal dancer at Continental Ballet for 7 years.With diverse training in classical, contemporary, modern and jazz, she is aninternational guest dancer and collaborator with many companies, including JamesSewell Ballet and Minnesota Dance Theatre. Born and raised in the DC area, Gabrielle Oliver is a first year MFA Creative Writing Poetry student at the University of Kentucky. She holds bachelor’s degrees from Howard University and Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. A self-proclaimed linguist, Oliver is most proficient in Japanese – with her experience translating for the State Department, the Embassy of Japan, the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the Japan-America Society of Washington, DC, and for multiple DC-based newspapers – but has also studied American Sign Language (ASL), German, Dutch, Italian, and French. She was the Japan-America Society of Washington, DC’s 2018 Tanaka Green Scholarship recipient for her studies at Kansai Gaidai University, as well as for her diachronic research on the aboriginal Ainu language of Japan. This past summer of 2019, Gabrielle was awarded a writing fellowship with 7x NAACP Image Award-winning poet, Nikki Giovanni. She is currently published in the Spring 2019 issue of A Gathering Together Literary Journal.
