We've all been there. Awkwardly standing around at an event trying to decide who to talk to first and what the heck to discuss. The weather? The latest sports story? Travis and Taylor? But (hopefully), we finally break the ice, get to know some new contacts, and feel like we really rocked this networking thing! What happens next? Maybe we connect on LinkedIn and send a short, “It was great to meet you,” but usually not much else. You see, networking is more than just the part where you find people to grow your network, it is more about the truly hard part - maintaining it. Today's guest is here to help! Shannen Stewart is the Founder of Heels & Handshakes, an organization that fosters community through in-person events and digital experiences for entrepreneurs, women in business and their allies. Key Takeaways Learn about the missing piece in business that led Shannen to create Heels & Handshakes. She explains, “networking is not checking a box, it is checking a pulse” - what you need to know once you make a professional connection and how to maintain that relationship. Shannen's go-to CRM to utilize for following up with your contacts by providing value, not noise. The best tactics to optimize your time at an event. Links & Mentioned Resources COVVE: Shannen's go to CRM app for taking notes on, and setting reminders to check in with her network. About Shannen Stewart Shannen created Heels & Handshakes in 2013 after returning to her hometown of Nashville and missing the community of women within the hospitality industry. She noticed the lack of opportunities to network. Shannen wanted to ensure that the women who made up the Greater Nashville workforce would all have positive and collaborative interactions to enrich their lives professionally and personally. What started as a ten- person meeting for cocktails and conversations has evolved to over 3,000 women and men in the Middle Tennessee community. Since founding the organization, she has curated over 240 events for the Heels & Handshakes members. Shannen's event brand partnerships and collaborations include Kendra Scott, TEDx, Ballet Ball, Tiff's Treats, and the Nashville Young Leaders Council to execute thoughtful activations for the Heels & Handshakes community. Her work in hospitality has received accolades and awards, including the 2021 Nashville Lifestyles Women in Business Recipient, The 2019 Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce NELA Awards Hospitality & Tourism Recipient, the 2019 Meeting Professionals International Tennessee Chapter Supplier of the Year and the 100 Leading Persons in Personal Services, Food and Hospitality in 2018. Shannen volunteers for Nashville-based organizations Thistle Farms and the YWCA in her spare time while serving on the TEDxNashville Committee. Director of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Debbie Frank with Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to chat about new projects and developments, the transit company's biggest challenges and more. Responsible for TOD planning and implementation around stations, Frank assists in the development of mixed-use communities for MARTA users. During Frank's six-and-a-half years with the organization, MARTA has experienced an economic impact of nearly $1 billion in new real estate at or near one-third of the 38 stations in its network. A considerable aid to the transit system's efforts, Frank's resume highlights include 25 years of planning, development, real estate and redevelopment initiative experience for non-profits, for-profits and quasi-governmental agencies in Alabama, Tennessee, Ohio and now Georgia. Before working with MARTA, Frank was a managing partner for Urban Blueprint, a real estate development and planning consulting firm based in Nashville, Tennessee. Her previous experience also includes serving as the executive director of the North Nashville Community Development Corporation, an affiliate organization of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. Frank said, “We pride ourselves on being an option for folks. The convenience of MARTA is definitely one that more people should experience.” MARTA is the ninth largest transit system in the United States, servicing the city of Atlanta and Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties. The organization has 38 rail stations, 570 buses and 338 rail cars, with upcoming plans for new rail cars in the works. A truly accessible way of travel through the metro area, the MARTA network also features a mobility service with 211 vehicles set aside to support the program. Frank said, “Prior to the pandemic, we had a daily ridership of about 450,000 people and annually that amounted to about 7.9 million riders…We saw a decrease…but we are pleased to say we are seeing an uptick in our ridership.” The MARTA ridership has also increased with the current rise in gas prices. The team at MARTA was fortunate enough to host the grand opening of the King Memorial TOD, a mixed-use development boasting 11,000 square feet of retail and office space and apartments adjacent to Oakland Cemetery and the King Memorial Station. The apartment sector of the project, Marchon, features 305 apartments available for rent, 32% categorized as affordable housing. Creating jobs and income for the surrounding neighborhood, Frank shared that the King Memorial TOD was a $63 million investment for the community. The developer worked closely with InvestAtlanta to ensure the creation of affordable housing units. Frank said, “We try to create as many opportunities [as possible] to work closely with our local jurisdiction where the opportunity presents itself. It did here at King Memorial.” Tune in to the full interview above to learn more about MARTA or visit www.ItsMARTA.com. Never miss an episode of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio! The Tennessee World Affairs Council in association with the American Council on Germany and Belmont University Center for International Business, University of Tennessee Center for Global Engagement and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce SPECIAL EDITION GLOBAL TOWN HALL SERIES via Zoom In Focus: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine Cold Wars Prof. Thomas A. Schwartz Distinguished Professor of History, Vanderbilt University August 18, 2022 @ 12:00 p.m. CT with moderator LCDR Patrick Ryan, USN (Ret) President, Tennessee World Affairs Council The Cold War was a period of intense competition and geo-strategic struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union and their allies in the Western and Eastern blocs following World War II. At times it threatened to turn hot -- potential battles between combatants armed with thousands of nuclear weapons -- but always featured political, economic, ideological and military confrontation. The post-Cold War era saw the Russian Federation and the United States work together on bilateral and global issues, a spirit of cooperation. That has evolved into the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine, the extensive support of Kyiv by the United States and its allies, the expansion NATO in reaction to Russian aggression and a disruption in global stability and international norms. Is this a new "Cold War?" Or is it something else? Join Vanderbilt Distinguished Historian Professor Thomas Schwartz in a conversation about Cold Wars, the "big one" and the current confrontation between Washington and Moscow and their allies.
I was heartbroken to learn that my friend and fellow triathlete, Darrell Freeman Sr. had passed on the evening of June 28 2022. This episode was very difficult for me to record. I only ever met him twice but we kept in touch on social media. I wanted to connect him with my nephew who has aspirations of becoming a pilot. I also wanted to interview him for the podcast. We never could schedule a time. Darrell was the first person in his family to graduate from college and through hard work and determination he became a self-made millionaire, a pilot, and a two-term chair of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, and so much more. After achieving a GPA of 1.234, he transferred to Middle Tennessee State University and ultimately graduated with a master's degree. Armed with his $2,000, and his wife's credit card, he built an IT business from an office the size of a closet and the company grew to 38 million in revenues. Darrell eventually sold his company for twenty million dollars. He has invested and mentored in many other businesses and hosted an airborne YouTube series of interviews Cockpit Conversations. In triathlons, I knew him as a member of the Tennessee crew so called because they always travel as a pack. He has completed 10 full Ironman races and used sports as an analogy to life. He believed that business is about perseverance just as it is with completing an Ironman races. Ralph was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee when he was 12. He went to UT Knoxville. His first job in the mid-1970s was in Nashville. He moved away and returned to Nashville in the late 1990s to run the Science Center. The center was struggling at the time and this piqued his interest. Ralph is more face-to-face. He's more about conversation instead of soundbites. He doesn't use social media. The Nashville Chamber job was the only other job he wanted and when it became open he applied. It attracted him because it's led by business leaders in the community who want to see a difference. They don't just hand over a check, they want to be engaged. Community leaders often have the desire but don't have the wherewithal to take the steps to support the community. That's how the Chamber helps. After three years as President of the Chamber, they won the Chamber of the Year Award in 2009. Determining your value. Setting goals. Scheduling with a timeline. Sokol President, American Council on Germany This special event is free but please consider becoming a member or making a donation when you register. Thank you. When President Joe Biden met the press on January 19th he was candid when addressing consequences for Russia if it attacked Ukraine. “It depends on what [Putin] does as to what extent we're going to be able to get total unity on the NATO front.” The White House quickly cleaned up what he “meant” to say. In the days since official statements continue to stress NATO solidarity but questions remain. For example British aircraft carrying weapons to Ukraine flew “around” Germany sparking media questions about Berlin being onboard for support to Kiev, despite Defense Ministry denials it restricted the flights. That was followed by the resignation of Germany's Navy chief over controversial remarks about the threat to Ukraine. Writing for the Center for European Policy Analysis, Oxana Schmies spoke of “Germany's paralyzing fear of war,” and warned that for the new government it was “worryingly clear that forging a united Russia policy is difficult and marred by underlying disagreement. [Link] As the prospects of Russian provocation and action against Ukraine reach the boiling point it's a fair question to ask where Germany "is," as the United States and allies lean forward in deterrence and preparation for response. To address this question we turn to Ambassador John Kornblum, preeminent authority on America's relationship with Europe, and Germany in particular. Ambassador John C. Kornblum has a long record of service in the United States and Europe both as a diplomat and as a businessman. He is recognized as an eminent expert on U.S.-European political and economic relations, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 1997 to 2001. Ambassador John Kornblum Russian President Vladimir Putin has placed crosshairs on Ukraine, a country he sees as linked to Russia and the people of Ukraine as “one people” with Russians. To back up this fixation with repairing a “historic injustice” Moscow has amassed a force of over 100,000 troops and supporting armor and aircraft along the border with Ukraine. Leading the West's response, President Biden has threatened “massive consequences” if Russia invades Ukraine. American and Russian diplomats are meeting this week. However, the lines are drawn: Putin is demanding an end to NATO's eastward expansion, to include Ukraine, and Biden and the West say there will be a very high economic price to pay as well as increased deployments on NATO's eastern flank. What is the context for this provocation and what are the U.S. and Allies prepared to do? Join the American Council on Germany and the Tennessee World Affairs Council for a discussion with Ambassador John Kornblum about the crisis. Joining us from Berlin, he will also discuss how we got to where we are and what the possible courses of action for the U.S. and Europe might be. The conversation will be led by Dr. Thomas Schwartz, Distinguished Professor of History at Vanderbilt University. This event is held in cooperation with the Belmont University Center for International Business and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Today, we're going to share with you highlights of this review, with takeaways that all cities and communities nationwide should be considering as they assess, plan, and prepare for future. I'm joined by Meharry Medical College President Dr. James Hildreth, a member of President Biden's COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force, and Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician, former Health Commissioner of Baltimore, and a senior adviser to Avalere Health. Both have played important roles in Nashville's Covid-19 response review, and as physicians with significant public health leadership experience, they give their candid thoughts on what went right, and what went wrong. Special thanks to NashvilleHealth, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Nashville Health Care Council, Meharry Medical College, and Avalere Health, for making this review possible. The Tennessee World Affairs Council in association with Belmont University Center for International Business and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce Global Nashville Guest Host Ralph Schulz in Conversation with Butch Spyridon A conversation about Nashville's "global brand" and the importance of tourism in building international bridges. Butch Spyridon, President/CEO, Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. "Global Nashville with Karl Dean" with guest host Ralph Schulz in Conversation with Butch Spyridon A conversation about Nashville's "global brand" and the importance of tourism in building international bridges. August 31, 2021 The metrics were clear before the pandemic crushed global hospitality. Nashville and Tennessee were experiencing a boom in the tourism sector. The #1 leisure destination in the United States, according to Global Traveler's Leisure Lifestyle Awards. Reader's Choice Award for Best Cities in the U.S., according to Conde Nast. A record-high $23 billion in visitor spending in the state in 2019 and trending higher, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Travel in Tennessee generated 195,000 jobs and $1.92 billion in state and local tax revenue -- saving Tennesseans in costs for public services. Nashville's attraction to visitors is global. The daily attraction of world-class music venues, cultural activities, sporting events and more, not to mention the city's mega-events are magnets for foreign visitors. Among the main industries that drive the economy, tourism is emblematic of international outreach and bridge building among the tens of thousands of foreign visitors who come to Tennessee and Nashville. The Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. web site says it all: Music is the universal language. Nashville - where music is inspired, created, recorded and performed. Music City is ready to be explored. Experience more music, food, and fashion than ever before. All are welcome to Music City! Watch this conversation as Nashville's Chamber President Ralph Schulz asks Nashville's visitor majordomo, Butch Spyridon, about the health of the region's hospitality industry and the contribution of tourism to Nashville's brand.
Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Ralph Schulz, CEO of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, who discusses the organization's purpose to create economic prosperity by facilitating community leadership. The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce is Middle Tennessee's largest business federation, representing more than 2,000 member companies. During the interview, Ralph highlights the economic development and community enhancement initiative of the Chamber, Partnership 2030, which is a regional cooperative dedicated to making Middle Tennessee among the nation's best place to live, work and do business. He also discusses the Save Nashville Now coalition, the referendum on the July 27 ballot, how business leaders and others can get involved in moving the community forward, and much more.About the Chamber: The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce is Middle Tennessee's largest business federation, representing more than 2,000 member companies. Belong, engage, lead, prosper embodies the Chamber's purpose to create economic prosperity by facilitating community leadership. Established in 1990 as an economic development and community enhancement initiative of the Chamber, Partnership 2030 is a regional cooperative dedicated to making Middle Tennessee among the nation's best places to live, work and do business.Current initiatives:Launching Partnership 2030 July 1.A 1989 Wall Street Journal article called out Nashville as being behind other Southeast cities in terms of economic developmentA group of business leaders decided that we needed an intentional plan – essentially a marketing plan for economic developmentIt would be a public-private partnership, it would be regional, and it would be housed at the ChamberSince 1990, we've seen more than 530,000 new jobs created by expansions and relocations of companies in the Nashville region.Relocation of 1,000 new companiesPer capita income has grown more than 200%Population has grown 78% with 2 million residents todayNow, we're about to launch the 7th iteration – Partnership 2030Not since 1990 when Partnership began has there been a more important time for an intentional plan around regional economic growthThe plan is focused on three strategic drivers: Job Growth, Education and Talent Development, and Quality of Place and LivabilityTwo Strategic Foundations are critical to the success of the plan:Regional Collaboration maintains our competitiveness and ensures our strategies meet the needs of the entire 10-county Nashville Economic MarketDeep Prosperity, or economic inclusion, is a foundational commitment in P2030. It is the reframing of prosperity to intentionally promote economic growth that is robust, shared by all, and enduring over the long termWorking to defeat the referendum on the ballot July 27. The Chamber has joined the Save Nashville Now coalition, a group of businesses, labor unions, faith groups and community organizations working to educate Nashvillians about the drastic cuts to city services that would result if the referendum passes. The referendum includes six provisions that would severely harm Nashville-Davidson County by cutting significant services, making it more difficult to govern and reversing progress that has been made in areas such as education, public safety, affordable housing and health care. Specifically, the referendum reduces Metro's property tax rate, creating a $40 million deficit in Metro's budget, lowers the bar for recalling elected officials, abolishes lifetime or other benefits for elected officials, changes how amendments to Metro's Charter can be made, makes it difficult for Metro to sell or lease land for community development, and targets professional sports teams, putting their facilities at risk.Ways to get engaged:We welcome the chance to work with business and community leaders on important issues that shape our region's prosperity – from education to small business, and from community relations to business recruitment. We work with members to identify the areas that align with their business priorities or personal interests, and we connect them with opportunities to lead on issues they care about. In 2012 Tresa Halbrooks launched LEGACY Consulting, PR & Events, a boutique firm based in Franklin, TN that focuses on clients ranging from professional athletes and entertainers to corporate entities, small business and non-profit organizations. She's coached some of the most well-known celebrities regarding their personal image, branding and philanthropy. Her vision has been vital in shaping the overall image of hundreds of athletes across the country for two decades. Prior to the launch of her company, she spent 11 years in the NFL – directing community and player relations. She was not only responsible for the players' image, public relations, community appearances, special events and foundation efforts, but also served as a team non-profit, community and league liaison. In fact, various NFL players credit her with giving them invaluable guidance that allowed them to become better men, often turning their image around so that they could become the overall athlete they wanted to be. Prior to the NFL, she worked for one of the largest entertainment companies in the country at that time, Gaylord Entertainment Company and the retail giant, Service Merchandise, working closely with their CEOs on public relations, corporate image, various corporate events and philanthropy. Tresa is an award-winning event producer and has played a role in some of Nashville's most impressive public relations efforts and prestigious events. She's proud to have spent her career working with some of the most talented and illustrious personalities in the sports and entertainment field to make a difference in the lives of others. It was the influence of her philanthropic efforts over the years and the importance of these celebrities and corporate entities to give back in order to create a legacy that led her to name her company. Making a difference in the lives of others is what LEGACY stands for. With a degree in Mass Communications and Journalism, it's no surprise that she is an author and freelance journalist. She became a columnist and contributing writer for Nashville Lifestyles Magazine shortly after landing on the cover in 2003 and wrote a singles column “Single in the City” for eight years. In 2009, she shared her personal story as a survivor of domestic violence, in the book Today I am the Person I Want to Be ~ Women's Stories of Success and Inspiration, published by the YWCA of Nashville. She now has a lifestyle blog – Goal Posts - that is geared towards helping young professional women strive to be their best. She says some of the most valuable lessons she's learned about being an entrepreneur came from her time working in the NFL. That sports-minded philosophy stayed with her as she built a successful business and her hope is to share her unique insights to help educate, encourage and inspire young professional women. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed with awards that include the Brentwood's Best in Business Awards for Event Planning and Production 2015 & 2016; Nashville Business Journal's Top Forty Under 40 in 2011; Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce's Emerging Leaders Award in 2009; Nashville Business Journal's Women of Influence Award in 2007 and the Tennessean's Top 40 Under 40 in 2005.

For your listeners who want that PDF file, they can just text us sales cocktail, the word sales cocktail 615-510-6364 . LeShane's Advice I mentioned earlier, one of the reasons why small businesses don't use technology is because when they Google it, they get so many options. They don't know which one is best for them and they just give up. On our website Sales Cocktail, we have a recommendation engine. Where we ask questions, like the size of your company, the industry that you're in and the type of software you're looking for and then your name and email. It spits out a recommended list of platforms from the criteria you just entered in in there and there's no cost for that. The reason why we did that is because we want small businesses to get over this analysis of trying to figure out what to do and what to use. So, I guess that that's a long way of saying, use technology to increase your bottom line. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Additionally, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce was the lead organization in the creation of the nationally recognized Nashville Entrepreneur Center and the passage of a public referendum supporting construction of the Music City Center convention facility. Since Schulz has taken on the role of president and CEO, the Chamber has also led the movement to improve public school performance through the creation of the Academies of Nashville, established the Moving Forward initiative to ensure the creation of a regional transportation solution through a cohesive community effort and developed into a respected publisher of data on the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area with the annual publication of the Vital Signs report. In 2009, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce was named “Chamber of the Year” by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), recognizing the Nashville Chamber’s organizational excellence, service to members, development of leaders and volunteers and its impact on key community priorities. The ACCE award referenced the Nashville Chamber’s role in the creation of Nashville for All of Us,a campaign made up of community leaders aligned to defeat a 2009 charter referendum which would have prohibited Nashville city government from conducting business in a language other than English. The Chamber was also praised for its creation of A Leading Edge, a broad range of programs aimed at helping Chamber members navigate the turbulent waters of the recession.
