Award-winning sports reporter Jason Wolf sheds light on the intricate and often misunderstood world of professional athletes and their nonprofit organizations. Wolf, known for his investigative prowess with the Arizona Republic and the USA TODAY Network, describes his findings in the mismanagement and inefficiencies that plague many athlete-founded charities, despite the athletes' noble intentions. Watch on video!Wolf's journey into this niche field began serendipitously while covering star NFL player Delaney Walker. He recalls, “I had known enough to know that 990 is that the federal tax returns were public records and that I could get my hands on them. But once I printed them out, I had no idea what I was looking for.”, which marked the start of his deep look into the financial and operational workings of nonprofits, culminating in a groundbreaking series of reports. His investigation, notably the “Mismanagement of the Year” project, scrutinized the nonprofits founded by Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award winners. This prestigious award, given annually since 1970, recognizes NFL players for their philanthropy and community service. Wolf explains, “My investigation into the efficiency of the nonprofits founded by these esteemed men reveals that many of them are far more inefficient than even the athletes themselves realize.” The investigation uncovered alarming trends, such as significant portions of donated funds being consumed by administrative costs rather than directly supporting charitable causes. Wolf shared a startling example: “My investigation in Buffalo showed that the for-profit nonprofit management company that ran Andy Dalton's nonprofit was contractually entitled to... a quarter of every dollar donated. So when Bills fans donated it was $442,000 to Andy Dalton's nonprofit. This for-profit company took 100 grand off the top.” The primary issue, according to Wolf, is the involvement of marketers rather than nonprofit professionals in managing these charities. This is resulting in poor financial oversight and operational inefficiencies. Wolf's findings have garnered numerous accolades and have sparked meaningful changes within the sports philanthropy landscape. One of the most impactful outcomes of his work is the formation of Sport for Impact, co-founded by former NFL star Anquan Boldin. This organization aims to educate players and their families about responsible sports philanthropy. Wolf proudly comments, “The most wonderful thing that has come out of this work has been Anquan Boldin co-founding Sport for Impact... the Jacksonville Jaguars are the first NFL team to provide them with a grant.” Because of his thorough investigations and dedication to uncovering the truth, Jason Wolf has illuminated the need for greater transparency and efficiency in athlete-run nonprofits. His work continues to inspire change, urging athletes to adopt best practices and ensure that their charitable endeavors truly benefit those in need.Follow us on the Twitter: @Nonprofit_ShowSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

In this high-energy and informative interview, investigative reporter Jason Wolf sheds light on the world of athletes and their sports foundations. Wolf's extensive experience in sports reporting and investigative journalism has allowed him to uncover critical issues in the NFL and player philanthropy. Wolf's journey through journalism spans two decades, starting with small community papers and culminating in his current position as a sports investigative reporter for the Arizona Republic and USA TODAY Network. His unique perspective from covering various cities, fan bases, and NFL teams sets the stage for his impactful journalism. The interview explores the ways many athletes create foundations without fully understanding nonprofit management, often relying on marketers and management companies. Wolf's reporting uncovered instances where these third-party organizations took substantial portions of funds intended for charitable purposes, raising questions about the efficiency and impact of these athlete-led nonprofits. Wolf's groundbreaking reporting has had a significant influence on the sports philanthropy landscape. The conversation delves into the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, its significance, and the importance of recognizing the efficient use of funds by athlete foundations. An exploration of grant funding from these foundations reveals their role as fundraising vehicles to support charitable causes. Wolf also discusses the prevalence of signed memorabilia as auction items in fundraising events. The interview concludes by revealing Wolf's upcoming work, and he briefs us on www.SportforImpact.org, a new organization founded by Anquan and Dionne Boldin, aimed at improving fiscal responsibility in athlete philanthropy. The launch of this organization represents a promising step toward more effective and accountable athlete-led foundations. You will learn a lot from this discussion about Jason Wolf's passionate investigative reporting and his dedication to shedding light on athlete philanthropy challenges. His work will leave a lasting impact on the sports world, encouraging positive change and accountability in the sector. To Care Is Human: Elevating the Human Experience in Healthcare and Beyond In this talk, Jason Wolf discusses how healthcare at its heart is built on a simple premise: We are human beings caring for human beings. This idea is grounded in the reality that both those who seek care and those who provide it agree that what matters most is the relationships they build through listening and communicating clearly, teamwork, and respect. The evidence shows that with a commitment to caring and to the human experience provided in every healthcare encounter, healthcare organizations can and will achieve the quality and financial results desired and the loyalty they seek. In the end, the humanity on which healthcare is built may be its greatest key to success.Resources: Consumer Perspectives on Patient Experience 2021This report is a follow-up to The Beryl Institute's 2018 study, Consumer Perspectives on Patient Experience 2021 reveals the qualities healthcare consumers look for in a healthcare experience remains much the same, even during a global pandemic. The data also provides a clear call to action. In order for healthcare providers to remain viable and competitive long-term, they must reinforce their efforts to deliver an exceptional experience and focus on being genuinely patient/consumer-centered.

As always, Dr. Orsini keeps his promise about two things, that you will feel inspired, and you will have learned valuable lessons to be a better and more compassionate communicator. Jason tells us about himself and his personal journey. Dr. Orsini and Jason discuss how patient experience is in front of medicine right now. Jason talks about why the patient is so different than they were ten years ago, and he shares a great story about his grandfather who was a pediatrician. We hear a little story from Dr. Orsini about a doctor that he was very close too and was a mentor. Jason describes patient experience and how important communication is to success. Dr. Orsini asks Jason why executives keep putting patient experience as a top priority but many haven’t provided the proper resources needed. Jason tells us that until we do what we need to do to match that disconnect we’re going to consistently be at risk in healthcare of not meeting the ultimate needs of our patients and families. Jason explains why “Patient experience shouldn’t be a thing to do” Jason explains how COVID affected us and he points out that it has shown us what is possible in a moment of dire need and the highest level of exhaustion in healthcare. We end with Dr. Orsini sharing a touching story of patient experience with a friend of his and Jason mentions that humanity is so essential to medicine and so essential to healthcare and so prevalent. If you’ve lived in Charlotte for long, you might have heard the story of the Brooklyn neighborhood. Covering most of what is today known as Second Ward, Brooklyn served as the heart of African American life, culture, and business from the early 1900s up until around the 1960s. Federal policies on urban renewal during the 1960s and 70s, led to the bulldozing of the neighborhood, replaced mostly with government buildings. About 1,000 families were displaced. On Third and Brevard streets, however, a handful of buildings survived, including the Grace AME Zion Church and the Mecklenburg Investment Company. Now., those buildings have been revived as the Brooklyn Collective, including a small business incubator and cultural center. To understand the history of these buildings, and the future of the collective, we talked with Dr. Willie Griffin, historian from the Levine Museum of the New South, Jason Wolf. And three business owners within the Brooklyn Collective, Monique Stubbs Hall of Studio 229 on Brevard, Dr. Willie Keaton of Restorative Justice and Gwen Jackson, of community engagement group Urbane Environments.

Our GuestJason Wolf is AVP and Global Head of Experience Design, author, Apple ‘think different’ producer, worked with Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Hasso Plattner & Vishal Sikka. Practice lead at IDEO, old-School employee of Macromind (later Marcomedia) makers of director and flash technology. Authored first books on shockwave technology. Design thinking strategist and innovation change agent. Father of 3, Maker, film maker and over all artist. Here are the highlights of our conversation with our guest:Anything from the creative aspects of art is what inspires Jason. He draws a lot of his inspiration from films, television, books, other authors, and websites -- anything out there from the abstract to the total tangible. He loves to consume that, makes sense out of it and use it in his everyday work to give people things that they have never seen before and make their lives more interesting.Art has always been something which has interested Jason, whether this is doodling or scribbling at 6 years old to water color paintings. He found that the reaction that he would get from others is what drives him to do this.In the 90s, he found himself in his cubicle observing how hundreds of employees were so out of touch while they are working towards one goal. He thought, if he was the owner of the company, he would ensure interaction amongst employee and with customers to drive innovation. He would create a culture where everyone is on a level playing field. This will snowball to happier employees who can laugh and joke about things which can spawn to a more comfortable, creative environment.Jason looks at a career in three phases: when you first join a company, when you are cruising along or in cruise control and when you feel like you are winding down. He shares that at one point, when he would feel that he will not be staying with the company much longer, he would become a rebel. This would either accelerate the speed of him leaving the company or people will turn around and say that it was cool and he gets promoted. His realization from this is that he should’ve expressed himself from the get go. But to those who want to do this, you need to note that this has a lot to do with the management so feel out the environment that you are in and explore their receptiveness prior. There is no company which do not want to be innovative; they just need to understand the reasoning behind the first couple of steps that you are taking. This is the key so show them.Jason shares that he embodies design thinking. You will know that you do too if you are still thinking about design even if you are no longer at work. You can walk into a restaurant and just see a Push/Pull sign but with no handle and go, ‘Who designed this?’ This is important because to help a company innovate or change is to be the change. You have to embody or imbue this energy yourself. To incorporate design thinking in your company, have different entry points to make it really easy for people in whatever level to get into this. Then run this through a lean method approach to measure learning to ensure that you meet whatever outcome you want it to have. Continue what works and get rid of those which do not. Adapt the technique of incremental fusion of design thinking as well where you would start small to get buy ins, continue building rapport, and have the fusion continue to gain momentum as it gets those successes. There are also specific items which a company should have to promote design thinking so ensure that you work in the background to provide these resources to make this successful. There is no company out there that this design thinking process can’t help innovate on. This is not just for technology or programmers only so this means that if you see problems in the world, you can fix those problems.
