Treasury’s War: An Interview with Juan Zarate

Professional Military Education

In this interview, I spoke with The Honorable Juan Zarate. The topic: Money!  Juan was the first-ever assistant secretary of the treasury for terrorist financing and financial crimes. We speak about his work at the Treasury Department in the post-9/11 period. During this time, Juan played a critical role in using the Treasury’s resources to go after terrorist financing. Additionally, the Treasury assisted in tracking down money that Saddam Hussein and his cronies had moved and hid outside of Iraq. Additionally, Treasury’s role became much more expansive beyond the Global War on Terror. In fact, we discuss how the Treasury became a much more formidable influencer of foreign policy against countries like Iran and North Korea. The legacy of these policy shifts continues to this day.  Key Topics include: Juan’s background and his work at the Treasury Department Historical examples of financial leverage being used tactically Treasury’s evolving role after 9/11 Pursuing terrorist financing and making it harder and costlier for terrorist groups to move money around the world How the Treasury Department used its resources to isolate North Korea  How the Treasury Department used a similar tactic against Iran Implications for today and how other countries might employ the same tactics against the United States The impetus for the interview was the book, Treasury’s War, which was published in 2013. The book remains relevant to this day. Juan is currently the global co-managing partner and chief strategy officer of K2 Integrity.  Follow Juan on Twitter: @JCZarate1 Check out the Book: Treasury's War: The Unleashing of a New Era of Financial Warfare Current work: K2 Integrity  Co-Founder and Chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ (FDD) Center on Economic and Financial Power (CEFP). I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass. — Maya Angelou In today's episode, I interview Whitnee Nicole, professional clinical therapist, and creator of Innervibe Tribe. She is sharing her tips to help you receive your dreams of being a successful career woman AND having the best relationships in your life at the SAME time. Over the years, women were taught to have one OR the other, and civilization still likes to treat science and spirituality as separate entities. Whitnee explains why it’s helpful to marry the two lifestyles, and the two realms, because everything is connected unto itself. Key Topics of Discussion: Dealing with narcissistic people and those who gaslight you into making you feel like you’re the “crazy” one (you’re not crazy) Marrying the ying-yang of the masculine and feminine energy of the Universe from a scientific perspective AND a spiritual perspective (why is it still being treated as separate from each other) Why Whitnee uses a hybrid model for business branding and why it’s important to do so (I do the same: using our names AND business names for branding) Learning the character traits of being authentic and transparent in both your life and in your career through the “shedding” process Getting through the negative energy of divorce and discovering your NEW Carrie Bradshaw mentality about life (being “single” is the new “20’s” ladies!) Dating again with your new outlook about self-love and self-esteem and the importance of setting positive boundaries Understanding and embracing that we are life-long students in the process of releasing resistance Synchronicities of astrology signs who cross our paths to help us heal and evolve in our lives Why you DON’T want to manifest a specific person into your love relationships (this can even apply to work relationships and friendships, too) For more information, please go to: Whitnee Nicole Instagram: @innervibetribe    Want to manifest faster? In this episode, Harris and Shawn chat with David and Chris, owners of Cyber City Circtuits (https://shop.cybercitycircuits.com/). As a result, Harris and Shawn perform a live consultation with them to give advice on how to approach marketing and sales. In particular, Harris gives his thoughts on best ways to set up a sales pipeline, and Shawn helps brainstorm marketing ideas. One Powerful Quotation: * 58:45 - Shawn: “Everyone thinks marketing is fun colors and shapes and photographs, and while that is a part of branding, real marketing comes down to ‘what do customers engage with?’...you have to take a scientific [approach] to go ‘I have a hypothesis, I’m going to test it, and see the results.’” Key Topics: * 1:00 - Shawn asks David and Chris to explain what Cyber City Circuits does. * 3:40 - David talks about how he’s working to ramp up a contract manufacturing business within Cyber City Circuits. * 4:45 - Harris asks David and Chris about why shipping is a hard problem. * 9:00 - Shawn talks about automating shipping processes to allow for capacity and time to work on sales and marketing. * 12:00 - David talks about wanting to find more CM customers to help pay for his and Chris's time and provides some examples about what ideal customers would look like. * 14:00 - Shawn askes David and Chris to define whether they want to be B2C or B2B. * 15:30 - Harris gives his thoughts on setting up sales pipelines. * 18:15 - Shawn asks David and Chris to elaborate where their current customers are coming from. * 20:30 - David mentions that they currently test 100% all of their boards. * 21:30 - Shawn and Harris help David define their current sales pipeline. * 23:00 - Harris gives some advice on setting up onboarding techniques when hiring a salesperson. * 28:30 - Harris talks about how a good, simple CRM tool can help Cyber City Circuits. * 32:00 - Harris and David discuss the various ways to position a brand when it comes to sales. * 33:45 - Harris recommends that David and Chris create marketing and sales personas and then use outbound marketing to validate hypotheses about those personas. * 36:30 - Harris talks about the customer acquisition process. * 37:15 - Shawn asks if Cyber City Circuits is seeing repeat customers for their CM service. * 41:00 - Shawn recommends following Hubspot’s tutorials (https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/buyer-persona-research) for developing personas. * 43:15 - Shawn and David talk about potential problems Seeed Studio’s CM service might run into.
