I'm incredibly honored to share my conversation with Professional Archer and USA Women's Longbow competitor Kristen Johnston about the children's movie that inspired her love of archery, ranking 15th in the world at the 3D World Championships in Terni, Italy, her new favorite story about winning her heat by 1 point in the rain, how she fell into the world of Renaissance Faires as a performer, starting a business with her husband providing quality bows that are also affordable, and why she is profoundly aware of the time she has in episode 17
Welcome to Episode 3 of BULLSHITTERY Podcast! Look at you, supporting this chaotic artist by listening to her chaotic podcast!? Legend!? Hellooooo! Join me as I chat with my friend Adam Rose; actor, dancer, content creator, comedy icon, blue-cardigan king, dad & hubby! Adam is the best & I'm so happy you're here to learn more about his illustrious life as a performer. Here's his IMDb bio: Rose made his debut opposite Robin Williams and Julie Kavner in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry. Born to a would-be Rabbinical cantor and an opera singer, Rose embraced music at an early age and excelled at Tap, Jazz, Ballet, and the martial arts training he underwent. It was during this same time that Rose was cast to be the voice of Peanut for three years, as the title-character on PB & J Otter, a cartoon on the Disney Channel. Soon after Rose would perform under the direction of Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Thoroughly Modern Millie) alongside Kristen Johnston and John Pankow in Peter Hedges' Baby Anger. The successful portrayal of a young boy with cancer led to subsequent guest spots on TV's Ed and Third Watch.Having developed a passion for live theater, Rose landed a role on stage with Theodore Bikel in The Gathering and went on to tour with three consecutive productions - including the pre-Broadway tour with Hal Linden. Throughout his time on stage and in recording booths, Rose continued to grow his love for dance, and at age 15 went on to become the youngest to ever teach dance at the renowned Broadway Dance Center in New York. While continuing to study the dramatic arts at New York's famed LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts, he appeared on the hit series The Sopranos and the Comedy Central movie The Hebrew Hammer, starring Adam Goldberg. It was soon after that Rose had the honor of working with Noah Baumbach, Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, and Anna Paquin in the Oscar-nominated The Squid and the Whale, as Otto - the best friend of Walt, played by Jesse Eisenberg. After four years of Shakespeare, character study, dialects, clowning (-study, not literally), vocal and dance training and all other school subjects, Rose was done with High School and ready to head west. The exodus was aided by his role on the production of Dead End, directed by Nicholas Martin at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles' famous Music Center. Rose starred as Angel, one of the Dead End Kids, alongside Jeremy SIsto, Tom Everett Scott, Joyce Van Patten, and Kathryn Hahn. He later appeared in HBO's Voyeur Internet project, directed by Jake Scott, and soon after earned a role in Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret. Rose once again found himself on-set with Anna Paquin, along with Matthew Borderick, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, and Kieran Culkin, just to name a few. While still acclimating to life in LA, Rose continued to make appearances on many hit TV shows. Follow Adam everywhere at @realadamrose. What a treat to be joined by a member of #medtwitter royalty. Ben Lovell and I had such a great discussion starting from Kristen Johnston's memoir Guts. We talk about whether being nosy is a prerequisite for being a good doctor (yes), how we treat addicts in the NHS (often badly), why as HCPs working in a visibly flawed system we are so conditioned to be defensive of the NHS even when it is failing. This book is a fantastic, raw and open insight into the lies people tell themselves when they are functioning addicts, what it might take to mean they may make a decision to change (top tip, it's not what doctors say to them) and a observational portrait of the NHS from the perspective of an American. It is funny, tough and insightful and I can guarantee reading it will make you a better clincian

This week, we're re-airing one of our favorite interviews from Heart of the Matter with Elizabeth Vargas, featuring actress and star of 3rd Rock from the Sun Kristen Johnston. When Kristen first started finding success in television, feelings of self-doubt and panic began to overwhelm her. She turned to prescription painkillers, and addiction began to take over her life. Re-join Elizabeth as she and Kristen speak about the events that led her to recovery, the experience of loving someone who themselves is struggling with substance use, and the pain of losing her sister to an accidental overdose. Kristin Johnson (no, not Kristen Johnston from 3rd Rock from the Sun) is a delightful, whip-smart therapist-in-training who lives in Bellingham, Washington and happens to be my sister-in-law and this week's lunch therapy patient. In our session, Kristin talks about why she wanted to come on the podcast, cooking for her parents, her theory about why people are obsessed with their food choices, and how she almost made me cry arguing about vegetarianism. We also cover char on pizza, beheading a chicken, catching and eating Dungeness crabs in the San Juan Islands, and her second dinners. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

JONATHAN BANK (Producing Artistic Director) has been the artistic director of Mint Theater Company since 1995, where he has unearthed and produced dozens of lost or neglected plays, many of which he has also directed. As Variety put it in 2007, “Bank is one of the few artistic directors for whom taking an old, obscure book off the shelf is an enterprise exciting enough to be addictive.”Under Bank’s leadership the Mint has earned an international reputation as the source for high-quality revivals of forgotten works and has become, in the words of The New York Times’ Jason Zinoman, “the leading New York entrepreneur” of the neglected play business. In his review of Mint’s 2018 production of Conflict by Miles Malleson, Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal described Jonathan Bank as “one of a handful of theater artists in America whose name is an absolute guarantee of quality.” Recently for the Mint, Bank directed The Suitcase Under the Bed, Katie Roche, Temporal Powers and Wife to James Whelan—three plays by the neglected Irish playwright, Teresa Deevy. Bank spearheaded Mint’s ambitious three-year, three-play Teresa Deevy Project, dedicated to reclaiming the lost voice of “one of the most undeservedly neglected and significant Irish playwrights of the 20th century” (The Irish Times). In a feature article about the project in America Magazine, Andrew Garavel writes, “Thanks are due to Jonathan Bank and the Mint Theater for bringing such a distinctive voice from the past so satisfyingly into the present.”Also for the Mint, Bank directed Yours Unfaithfully by Miles Malleson, The New Morality by Harold Chapin, Mary Broome by Allan Monkhouse, and Maurine Dallas Watkins’ So Help Me God! starring Emmy Award-winner Kristen Johnston. The production received four Drama Desk nominations, including Outstanding Revival and Outstanding Director. Other productions at the Mint include Lennox Robinson’s Is Life Worth Living?, the American Professional Premiere of The Fifth Column by Ernest Hemingway, The Return of the Prodigal by St. John Hankin and Susan and God by Rachel Crothers. Jonathan both adapted and directed Arthur Schnitzler’s Far and Wide and The Lonely Way which he also co-translated (with Margaret Schaefer). These two plays were published in a volume entitled Arthur Schnitzler Reclaimed which Bank edited. He is also the editor of four additional volumes in the “Reclaimed” series (Teresa Deevy vols. 1 & 2, Harley Granville Barker, and St. John Hankin) as well as Worthy But Neglected: Plays of the Mint Theater Company which includes his adaptations of Thomas Wolfe's Welcome to Our City and Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth, both of which he directed, along with five other Mint rediscoveries. Other directing credits include critically acclaimed productions of Ivanov and Othello for the National Asian American Theater Company, John Brown's Body, The Double Bass and Three Days of Rain for the Miniature Theater of Chester and The Heiress, Hobson’s Choice, Candida and Mr. Pim Passes By for the Peterborough Players. Just as Kristen Johnston started finding success as an actress starring in the Emmy-award winning sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun, feelings of self-doubt and panic began overtaking her life. In an unfamiliar city, without her support system nearby, Kristen found comfort in prescription painkillers – initially prescribed to her to treat migraines. Over the years her addiction worsened, turning Kristen into the self-described “Nancy Drew of painkillers.” Her persistent substance use ultimately caused an ulcer in her stomach to burst, sending her to the hospital. The events that followed led Kristen to find help, “break-up with her addiction” and even write the best-selling memoir Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster. But Kristen also knows what it feels like to love someone suffering from addiction. Just last year, she lost her sister to an accidental overdose. In this episode of Heart of the Matter, Kristen and Elizabeth reflect on the judgment they face as women in recovery, the importance of overcoming shame and the feelings that come with caring for someone struggling with substance use. Mr. Malone aka Fagsy Malone is a podcast host, artist, spiritual guide, and he’s one of my best most supportive friends. My brotherman! In this episode of Ask Jillian we talk about our relationship, the good and bad times we’ve shared and how there’s always been a lot of laughs.I met Mr. Malone with his BFF director Anne Fletcher at Sandra Bullock’s “All About Steve” movie premiere and became fast friends. Mr. Malone shares some of his unique dating stories, I had never heard of a double dick, didn’t think it existed but you learn something new everyday. Also we talk about when he worked at Disney World as a performer and reluctant character, he nailed Friar Tuck! Then our trip to Disney World together with my kids where we discovered Ruby had created her own new character Princess Rage, a classic villainess! Mr. Malone is an amazing artist. One of his animal portraits of my beloved Teddy is a treasured piece of art in my home. His face swapping and photoshopping skills on Instagram are hilarious and legendary, Barbra (and me) is one of his favorite subjects! We go into how Mr. Malone’s life took a new unexpected direction and he’s no longer doing art. From loss came a rebirth where he tapped into his gift of intuitionism and now gives automatic pen readings at The Crystal Shrine here in Los Angeles. His beloved mother, whose ashes he spread at a Target with Kristen Johnston, had the gift as well. Mr. Malone’s wit, charm and singing talent is featured as a co-host on Straight Talk with Ross Matthews and his own podcast It’s a Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay Podcast, they are both great! We had a lot to catch up on, it was incredible and inspiring to hear about how happy he is now, it gave me hope!MR. MALONE’S INSTAGRAM www.instagram.com/fagsymaloneMR. "(The counselor) had me go through the "Are You and Alcoholic?" checklist…and I said 'yes' to just about everything and I think I said, 'But I don't know if I have a problem.' And she was like, why did you come here?" —Laura on SRN Laura Silverman is the founder of The Sobriety Collective, a resource and blog created to celebrate recovery in all its forms. In 2007, at age 24, Laura pulled a 180 and went from insecure, anxious binge drinker to newly-minted sober 20-something. This scary (but, for her, absolutely necessary) step catapulted her into a journey of long-term recovery. She may not be a card-carrying member of AA, but Laura will always have gratitude for the program that welcomed her with open arms and helps millions of others around the world. She believes in the raw power of storytelling and thanks Koren Zailckas, Sacha Z. Scoblic, Caroline Knapp, Kristen Johnston, and Sarah Hepola for their fantastic memoirs of addiction and recovery. Laura absolutely loves the #RecoveryFriendlyWeb in all its glory and is super-pumped for the new recovery movement’s UNITE to Face Addiction in Washington, DC this October. Laura also spits fi-yah on a karaoke mic. You can find out more about Laura at @wearesober on Twitter, TheSobrietyCollective.com and in her story on KLĒN + SŌBR

After interviewing Jack about his new film Space Station 76, Dennis and Jack recorded this extra episode where Jack responds to the question, "What message was left on your voicemail or answering machine that you played over and over?" by actually PLAYING a bunch of old messages for us and narrating. Dennis shares a couple messages, too. The episode ends with a recording from 1998 of Jack as a pre-Girls Will Be Girls Evie Harris singing "Evie," a parody of the song "Roxie" from Chicago while Dennis clunks away on piano. The recording was for a performance for Dennis's book launch for "Misadventures in the (213)" in which Evie played the role of the landlady in the book. Hence, all the references to rent checks, etc. (The accompanying photo was from the Quest for the Crown benefit in 2000. Dennis wrote, Evie commentated and Kristen Johnston was one of the judges)
Actress and author Kristen Johnston needs no introduction but we're giving her one anyway: the Emmy award-winning star of Third Rock From the Sun who's now starring on TVLand's The Exes (Wednesdays at 10 pm!), Johnston is also the New York Times bestselling author of Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster, which details her struggle with and recovery from addiction. Here we talk about the nitty gritty details of her stomach exploding (that's what taking too many pills will do to you), the part fame played in her addiction and her plan to start up sober high schools in New York.
Ty and Nick welcome writer/director Caytha Jentis into the "virtual lounge." Ray and Gelso chat with Jentis about her recent movie "Bad Parents." It takes a poke at the world of obsessed parents in soccer. the movie stars Janeane Garofalo (Truth About Cats & Dogs), Cheri Oteri (SNL), and Kristen Johnston (3rd Rock from the Sun) Plus Ty and Nick get Caytha's take on the lack of women behind the camera in film. Kristen Johnston, actor (“3rd Rock from the Sun”, “The Exes”), New York Times best selling author of GUTS and founder of SLAM, an organization to create the first sober high school in New York City, and Michelle Lipinski, Director of the Northshore Recovery High School in MA, join us to talk about the importance of creating – and maintaining – a sober lifestyle for teens at schools across the country.
Kristen Johnston played "Sally Solomon" on the hit television series, "3rd Rock from the Sun" (1996), for which she won two Emmy® Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In TV Land's original sitcom, "The Exes" (2011), Johnston plays "Holly Franklin", a divorce attorney and landlord to three of her former clients, who happen to share the apartment across the hall from her own. Johnston has appeared on numerous TV shows including "ER" (1994), "Ugly Betty" (2006) and "Bored to Death" (2009). She also had a memorable turn as "Lexi Featherstone", the party girl who falls out of a window on HBO's "Sex and the City" (1998). She stops by on Monday, January 28, at 7pm EST, to discuss her career and her first book, "Guts".
I love this girl! She was so much fun to talk to and so giving with her candor and her truth. We know Kristen from her body of work in front of the camera but there is a much more personal side. In Kristen's new book, "GUTS: A Memoir, The Endless Follies & Tiny Triumphs Of A Giant Disaster" she is brutally honest about her alcohol and drug addiction. I believe that in order to move through something the minimum requirement is truth, your own truth, being honest with yourself and others around you. Shame and trying to hide parts of your life away in a closet not only rob the people around you from getting to know the fullness of YOU, but it robs you from being free to be you.
