[2:25] We are looking forward to RISKWORLD 2024 in sunny San Diego, California, from May 5th through May 8th, 2024. Public registration is open. Register today at RIMS.org/RISKWORLD and the link in this episode's show notes. Early registration rates are available through February 29th, 2024, brought to you by RIMS and leap year! [2:52] RIMS likes to keep things exciting and every year we have a new president. We are delighted that the RIMS 2024 President is David Arick. David is very well known among RIMS members and chapters. He was originally an officer and a board member for the Central Ohio and St. Louis RIMS chapters. [3:11] David then served in Society roles as a member of the RIMS International Committee. He was Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee and a member of the External Affairs Committee. He joined the board in 2019 and was Vice President in 2023. We've got much to discuss with David. [3:28] His first Leadership Corner installment is now live. The link is in this episode's show notes. We're here to create a new dialog based on that and hear about what his plans are for RIMS, the greater risk profession, and how RIMS has played a pivotal role in his career. [3:55] I'm very pleased to be joined by RIMS 2024 President David Arick. David, welcome to RIMScast. [4:10] Justin and David did a webinar together right after the pandemic hit on where they thought the pandemic would lead and how bad it might get. Now they know how bad it got. [4:30] David's first Leadership Corner article as the new President is up on the RIMS.org website. There is a link in this episode's show notes. David is all about diving in. [5:09] David praises past RIMS presidents including immediate past president Jennifer Santiago. He feels fortunate to have served on the board with them and to be following in Jennifer's footsteps. She's there whenever he needs something. Having watched her as President in a tumultuous year gave David an idea of what to expect. [5:43] David is excited by the opportunity and feels humbled to follow in the footsteps of people he has watched from afar and admired over the years. [6:21] David's first experience in risk and insurance was in a claims group with Nationwide Insurance, while he was working his way through school. Then he got a job in risk management at a bank. That was where he learned about RIMS. He decided he wanted to continue in the career of risk management. [7:14] A few years later, David was working for Abbot in Chicago where he gained global experience. He then went to Emerson Electric in St. Louis, another global company in a different sector. He moved to GE in 2001 and enjoyed working there for three years. Then he came to International Paper. [8:05] David likes that risk management gives you a lot of opportunity to see across different functions both inside and outside the company. You learn a lot about the DNA of a firm. Risk management works with people across the firm and they look to risk management for guidance. You work with a broad network of external partners. [9:14] Every industry has its unique challenges and every company is different in how they view financial decision-making and legal concerns. A way of thinking, being inquisitive, and gathering facts is transferable from one industry or firm to another. If you are around risk management for a while, you build a standardized tool kit. [10:29] David's view on standards is that they have a place, depending on your industry. Every industry has different regulations that may determine the standards you follow. [11:27] In David's first risk management position, he needed knowledge. Some people in the risk department invited him to a meeting of the local Ohio chapter of RIMS. He quickly saw the available network of local risk managers, insurance companies, brokers, and others who attended chapter meetings. They were all helpful in helping David learn. [12:20] David was asked to join the board and there he saw what chapter leadership looked like. Later, he served on the chapter Board in St. Louis. Those opportunities helped him learn to network differently to attract prospective members and make meetings successful. [13:18] David commends chapter leaders who find dynamic programming to bring people back, with speakers and topics that differentiate going to a meeting from staying at home and watching a podcast or a webinar. [14:03] RIMS plug time! RIMS Virtual Workshops: Visit RIMS.org/virtualworkshops to see the full calendar. On February 7th and 8th, we have Facilitating Risk-based Decision Making. On March 6th and 7th, our friend Elise Farnham hosts Applying and Integrating ERM. [14:28] Information about these workshops and others is on the RIMS Virtual Workshops page and a link to the full calendar is in this episode's notes. [14:36] On February 29th, Hub International sponsors Ready for Tomorrow: Protecting Your Profits in the Property Market. On March 7th, in celebration of International Women's Day, Origami Risk leads the session Women of Risk & Compliance: Leading & Learning One Step at a Time. [14:58] Visit RIMS.org/Webinars to learn more about these webinars and to register! Links are in the show notes. Webinar registration is complimentary for RIMS members. [15:11] Quick shout-out to our friends at the Spencer Educational Foundation, which funds the education of next-generation risk management and insurance talent. Spencer's scholarship program is open but coming to a close on January 31st for undergraduate and graduate students and on March 1st for Ph.D. applicants. [15:30] Spencer's course development grant cycle is entertaining submissions through February 15th. Students and risk management and insurance faculty with interest can visit Spencered.org for additional details. [16:28] David discusses the biggest risks of the year ahead: how new technology will be used and the new risks it will introduce. What are the controls and framework around new technology? Cybersecurity is a current and future issue. Remote work presents a set of issues and challenges. How do you manage culture, working from a couch? [18:00] In the U.S., litigation and the abuse of the legal system are huge problems affecting a lot of industries and impacting their ability to continue. Litigation costs are out of control. There are also concerns about wars, supply chains, and natural disasters. These things will keep risk professionals busy. [18:33] The World Economic Forum released its global risks report for 2024. They list misinformation and disinformation as the number one risk for the two-year outlook and the number five risk for the ten-year outlook. Cyber insecurity is number four on the two-year outlook and number eight on the 10-year outlook. [19:07] Adverse outcomes of AI technologies is number six on the 10-year outlook and wasn't on the two-year outlook. We have these short-term and long-term risks to be thinking about within the profession. David will be presenting with a group from Marsh and Zurich at the RISKWORLD 2024 Conference on the WEF global risks report. [20:44] Ahead of the conference, David suggests reaching out to your IT and information security folks and your legal department about AI technology. It's on their radars, too. It's a great opportunity to learn how they view this topic, how it applies to your company,  and what they need from risk management. Draw in your insurance advisors, also. [22:07] David sees that it is effective when people with experience engage with those people without as much experience who are curious and want to learn and grow. There's a group of young professionals who are thirsty for knowledge and want to expand their value and grow their careers. David hopes you engage with them. [23:21] Try to give back and pay it forward a little bit. One of the exciting elements of engaging with young risk professionals is showing them that there is a path forward, helping them navigate through some uncertainty, and showing them that there are a variety of ways to be successful. Networking helps a lot in finding a path for a person. [24:05] David prefers in-person interaction to a virtual experience. He loves to be with people to see by their body language what resonates with them. It allows a genuine conversation that builds relationships. [24:47] An upcoming in-person event is RISKWORLD 2024, May 5th‒8th, in San Diego, California. David guesses he has been to RISKWORLD more than 20 times. This one will be special for David as he will be onstage and leading some of the events. David has presented at many conferences, preparing for months. He loves seeing people react. [26:16] David looks forward to RISKWORLD like a reunion. There are many old friends and people you only get to see there and you make new friends as you learn and have fun along the way. RISKWORLD presents relevant topics, “ripped from the headlines.” People want cutting-edge knowledge to take with them from leaders in the space. [27:16] David looks for speakers he respects and that he knows will deliver insightful information in a way that is meaningful to the attendees. He looks for topics he knows he wants to learn something about to take back. He looks for good speakers. [28:40] David has advice for first-time RISKWORLD attendees. First, don't over-commit. Things take longer than expected. Once you're late on your schedule, you're playing catch-up. Second, think about where you're meeting people when you're scheduling things. Things are spread out. Factor in the travel time and don't overschedule. [29:49] Justin adds, “Comfortable shoes! Maybe an extra pair of socks. There's a lot of walking involved. These convention centers are big!”  [30:19] Justin looks forward to seeing David on stage in the opening session of RISKWORLD 2024 in San Diego and to attending his session with Marsh and Zurich on the WEF Global Risks Report. “Go hear from the RIMS President directly!” [30:44] Justin looks forward to seeing David at other RIMS events this year. Justin thanks David Arick. [31:00] Special thanks to RIMS 2024 President David Arick, for joining us here on RIMScast. We hope to hear more from him throughout the year. The Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, Missouri was designed by noted 1904 World's Fair architect Louis C. Spiering and built in 1912 as the home of the Ethical Society of St. Louis. Musicians and public speakers throughout the years have enjoyed the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall, earning The Sheldon its reputation as "The Carnegie Hall of St. Louis."[1][2] Well-known singers and ensembles have performed at The Sheldon, and speakers such as Albert Einstein, Dwight Eisenhower and Ernest Hemingway have spoken from its stage. The St. Louis Chapter of the League of Women Voters was founded in The Sheldon's Green Room. ——— When the Ethical Society relocated to St. Louis County in 1964, The Sheldon became primarily a music venue. Then, in 1974, a former singer with the Duke Ellington Orchestra purchased the facility, transforming The Sheldon into a church and the site for many jazz and gospel concerts. A California attorney with a love for chamber music purchased the building in 1984 at the urging of the Paganini String Quartet. He engaged Walter F. Gunn to restore the building and upon completion Gunn began operating The Sheldon in 1986 as a venue for concerts and community events. ———

Welcome to Intention this is Byron DeLear. I'm very excited today to bring you a very special voice – a special episode of Intention. Now, for my listeners and viewers, I know there's been quite a bit of time between episodes, this is because of other commitments. So, I just want you to know I appreciate your loyalty and patience – I'd like to think it's about quality, not quantity. Well, you're in for a treat with this one. Last February, I helped organize and was honored to speak at the St. Louis City NAACP's Civil Rights Conference; and now, in partnership with the NAACP, we bring you a poignant and moving talk by one of the nation's finest legal minds, Debo Adegbile. But this speech is not lawyerly, no — this presentation is an emotional tour-de-force through the history of American Civil Rights, and if you're listening to the audio-only podcast, please take the time to pull up our YouTube Channel and see the short film that accompanies the talk. You'll also hear from my dear friend Adolphus Pruitt, President of the St. Louis City NAACP, sharing the impactful and momentous history of the St. Louis Chapter of our nation's largest and most widely recognized civil rights organization. This episode was a labor of love and I hope you enjoy this as much as I did in pulling it together.       A Sunshine Paradigm Productionin association withSt. Louis City NAACPINTENTIONwith Byron DeLearEpisode 13:Civil Rights Through History, Forging American Democracy—Debo AdegbileProduced and Written by: BYRON DELEAR Special Guests: DEBO ADEGBILE ADOLPHUS PRUITT Co-Producer and Editor: YAVOR VESSELINOV Graphic Design: JONATHAN LEHMANN CAMBIUM CREATIVE Music: “Reflection” by hammertrax Licensed from Pond5 “Strange Background Drone” by Erick McNerney Licensed from Pond5 “Low Intriguing Synth Drone” by Erick McNerney Licensed from Pond5 “Dark Music Box” by Anton_G Licensed from Pond5 Archival footage and audio from: Pond5ShutterstockDepositphotosWikimedia CommonsTHE MARCH (1963) A film by James Blue U.S. National Archives, Public Domain “Little Rock Nine” News Footage - 1957 Fair Use Youtube Fair Use:President Obama and the First Family Visit SelmaBy The Obama White HouseThe Obama White HouseAtlantic Slave Trade VideoBy CTHS ProductionsThe American Civil War DocumentaryBy Baffling DocumentariesElla Baker Speaks! The Riverfront Times wrote, “Under the leadership of executive producer Mike Isaacson, the quality of Muny productions rose like the proverbial phoenix.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch named him “Theatre Artist of the Year,” noting that by “staging one impressive production after another, he made The Muny simultaneously hip and – be- lieve it – important to our community.” During Isaacson's tenure, The Muny has produced new developmental productions of Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn, Lerner and Loewe's Paint Your Wagon and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. During its record-breaking 100th season, The Muny became the first theatre in the world to produce the legendary Jerome Robbins' Broadway, doing unprecedented archival work on both the artistic and business side. During that same season, The Muny produced the U.S. regional premiere of Jersey Boys. Isaacson has changed the look and feel of a Muny production, overseeing a transformation in every aspect of pro- duction that culminated in 2019 with the arrival of the theatre's extraordinary James S. During the summer of 2020, when The Muny was closed due to COVID-19, Mike produced and created The Muny 2020 Variety Hour Live!, an online show that reached more than a worldwide audience of over 400,000.   With Kristin Caskey, Isaacson has produced more than 23 Broadway musicals and plays, national tours, off-Broadway and London productions. Last year, he produced the highly ac- claimed David Byrne's American Utopia, which made every major “Top 10” list, and became a highly acclaimed film by Spike Lee on HBO, for which he also served as an executive produc- er. Just as the COVID-19 shutdown of Broadway began, he was awaiting the first preview of Neil Simon's Plaza Suite, starring Mathew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker.   Also, during the shutdown, Isaacson served as a supporting producer of the acclaimed re- vival of The Unsinkable Molly Brown at New York's Transport Group. Other career highlights include: Fun Home (2015 Tony Award, Best Musical; 2018 Olivier nominee for Best Musical), Legally Blonde the Musical (2011 Olivier Award, Best Musical), Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002 Tony Award, Best Musical), Red (2010 Tony Award, Best Play), The Humans (2016 Tony Award, Best Play), If/Then, starring Idina Menzel, Lanford Wilson's Burn This, starring Adam Driver and Kerri Russell (2019 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Play), Bring It On: The Musical (2013 Tony nomination for Best Musical), A Doll's House 2 (2017 Tony nomination for Best Play), You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1999 Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical), The Seagull, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard, Caroline, or Change (Tony nomination for Best Musical); One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (2001 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play) and Death of a Salesman (1999 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play). Each week we interview a Special Guest, shining light on their investing story, lessons learned, words of wisdom and resources to aid you in starting your investing journey. Fred Tonnies is a pharmacist who is working as the Pharmacy Coordinator for the 7 Mental Health hospitals in Missouri. He is married to Kathleen Tonnies and they had two children and four grandchildren. He first became interested in stocks when he joined a stock club in Columbia Missouri, which required him to join BetterInvesting and he was in the Kansas City Chapter Region. The KC Chapter would send members to Columbia to teach BI members and clubs on investing using the BetterInvesting methods. He then moved to the St. Louis area where he was elected President of the St. Louis Chapter. He joined two investment clubs, attended the Model Investment Club (MIC) and finding he has gained a lot of hands-on education on stock selection by being around other BetterInvesting members. In the past he had all his IRA and Roth accounts in mutual funds and owned no individual stocks. Today he has transitioned from mutual funds to stocks and now all accounts have 100 % stocks in them. He is now self-directing his own account which he found takes a lot of personnel time. He has adjusted to this time involvement by owning some of the stocks selections that his club has purchased. This has freed up more personnel time. The people that he has met thru his membership in the clubs has been good. They have helped him to gain information and friendship from the members to make the chapter better now and in the future. -- If you're looking for a BetterInvesting Chapter near you, check out our community at https://bit.ly/BILocalChapters or visit us at BetterInvesting South Florida Chapter Take the info from the podcast to the next level by becoming a BetterInvesting Member and joining us at our next Educational Event Grab a copy of “The Baby Billionaire's Guide to Investing: Building Wealth at an Early Age” If you have questions about the podcast or any of the programs we discuss here, email us at abetterinvesting@gmail.com Want your child or a youth you know to participate in the Summer Stock Market game? Elle Reneé of St. Louis Chapter of Black Nonbelievers joins Chuck and Brady in the studio.   Elle's step father was a pastor for multiple churches of varying denominations and current pastor of a nondenominational church, and some of their church services would go all day long. All of this made church a very foundational part of Elle's childhood. Along with the good side of closely-knit church communities also brought the bad, including lot of unwanted touch.   Elle got married during the same week she graduated high school and turned 18. After two failed marriages, she learned to stand up for herself. As she started to pull away from the faith, many church people would report back to her family. She set boundaries to protect herself and hasn't looked back since.   Chuck and Elle share experiences of being People of Color, and in the finale segment, Brady and Elle discuss parenting after religion.   Elle is the Chief Organizer of the St. Louis Chapter of Black Nonbelievers, a friendly, informative secular community connecting People of Color (and allies). Persistent, Intellectually Curious, Courageous, Entrepreneurial, Innovative—these are all familiar entrepreneurial terms that are used by our guests to describe folks that are engineers. Mr. Ronald Moore and Dr. Terrence Freeman represent the St. Louis Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers or NSBE. NSBE's mission is the same today as it was over 40+ years ago—to help improve the recruitment and retention of black engineering students who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. NSBE is a highly respected, premiere African-American organization that is community focused with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programming. They create opportunities for children as young as elementary school all the way through post-graduate studies. In this conversation, hear about the positive impact they have had on entrepreneurs they've worked with as well as the the millionaires and billionaires that are NSBE members. What's even more exciting is their 43rd Annual NSBE Conference that will be held March 29-April 2nd in Kansas City MO. At events like these, they have had great speakers and notables such as Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Cruise Line; General Darren McDew, Transcom, Commander US Airforce; Richard Mark, CEO of AmerenUE Illinois; Lieutenant General Joseph Ballard; former Corps of Engineers Commander and many other community figures that attend and participate. Dr. Freeman shares his personal journey where instead of basketballs or bicycles he received chemistry sets and telescopes from parents who were determined to expose him to science at an early age. He became exceptional in his field with full scholarships and opportunities to some of the nation's most exceptional institutions for engineering. Mr. Moore not only served this country with the National Guard but his strong engineering background is presently a significant contribution to the region's infrastructure that's right below our feet. Entrepreneur's Inspiration is in their true engineer's stories but also in the key take aways they share in this conversation. In this episode: - Encouragement if you've ever felt like you might not be right for the job or particular opportunity. - Inspiration to overcome deeply engrained fears or apprehensions that you may have picked up in childhood. - Entrepreneurship is about problem solving, but what's a step beyond that? The importance of problem recognition. - How engineering employs the same tactics as entrepreneurship. - Two things entrepreneurs and engineers can't leave home without-persistence and resilience. - Engineering touches on so many industries, disciplines and perspectives that you could throw a rock in any direction at the huge annual NSBE national convention and would certainly hit someone along the engineering spectrum. - The awe-inspiring details and highlights of the previous and 2017 NSBE national convention. - How to connect with NSBE and NSBE STL. From K-Post Grad. - Inspiration to become "entrepreneurially courageous" just as NSBE students are prompted to become "academically courageous".
