Cultivating Compassion: The Daily Practice Of Love And Kindness—Metta is a Pali word that means "loving-kindness" or "positive energy." which is a traditional Buddhist concept that involves acting with compassion towards all sentient beings while also being aware of the natural world. It's also a way to avoid samsara and rebirth and develop perfect love for all others. Metta is sometimes translated as "universal friendliness" to emphasize the impersonal nature of the affection generated, free from any desire or expectation of return. Happiness Is the Path
On Sunday, June 9, 2024, Pastor Joe Troutman preached "Philadelphia" from Revelation 3:7-13. "Jesus has opened a way to his people no one is able to shut, and access is given to those upon whom God's name is written." 1. The Open Door (vs. 7-8) 2. Learn that God has Loved You (vs. 9-10) 3. This week, we're dialing up the gay to MAJOR as we submit ourselves to queer-indie girl group THE ACES to discuss their newest LP 'I've Loved You for So Long'. As a long-time Ace Face, Quincy has a lot to say (and teach) during the track-by-track, including the bts delays for this album (& their last one), the coming-of-age-as-a-queer-person themes surrounding the project, and what you can always expect in a release from these girlies. ALSO discussed: BEBE REXHA's assault by phone at her NYC show, TROYE SIVAN's filthy disgusting rollout for his new single 'Rush', CARLY RAE JEPSEN's 'companion project' to The Loneliest Time, and the WHITE HOUSE's questionable decision to not let one of BETTY WHO's dancers perform because of his OnlyF*ns... AT THE SPA: DAGNY (Same Again [For Love]). HAYLEY KIYOKO (Greenlight), PURPLE DISCO MACHINE (Bad Company), LEIGH-ANNE (Don't Say Love), AMAARAE (Co-Star), ROSE GRAY (Happiness), IDINA MENZEL (Move), and SAM SMITH & MADONNA (Vulgar). NEXT WEEK: 5 Years of 'Palo Santo' by YEARS & YEARS!
This week we're submitting to the dominant will of the one and only KESHA as we celebrate the release of her 5th studio album 'Gag Order'! Throughout our track-by-track, we discuss The Drama (ding) surrounding the rollout, Kesha's cathartic release strategy, and how G.O. holds up to other works in her catalog. ALSO discussed: new music from MAUDE LATOUR (Twin Flame), JANNELE MONÀE (The Age of Pleasure), JONAS BROTHERS (The Album), CHRISTINE & THE QUEENS (Paranoia, Angels, True Love), & THE ACES (I've Loved You For So Long), upcoming music from TROYE SIVAN (Rush), DAGNY (Same Again For Love), OLIVIA RODRIGO (Vampire), and CARLY RAE JEPSEN (Shy Boy)! This month is crazy!!!!!! At the SPA: BOYS LIKE GIRLS (Blood and Sugar), NELL MESCAL (In My Head), MOYKA (Already Gone), RENEÉ RAPP (Snow Angel), HEMLOCKE SPRINGS (Heavun), SLAYYYTER (Out of Time), ZEE MACHINE (How Will I Know), DONNA MISSAL (Move Me), and TOVE LO (I Like U). NEXT WEEK: 'I've Loved You for So Long' by THE ACES!
This week, we're submitting to the will of ELLIE GOULDING, the queen of brit-pop hits who just dropped her latest album 'Higher Than Heaven'! Throughout our track-by-track, we discuss the long winding road that was this rollout, the best songs on this massive tracklist, and attempt to settle a debate over the pronunciation of 'Goulding'! ALSO discussed is JESSIE WARE's new album 'That! Feels Good!', Scandanavian songstress MOYKA, and how our fav pop girlies fared at the Met Gala! At the SPA: DAGNY (Heartbreak in the Making), THE ACES (I've Loved You for So Long), ARIZONA (Die for a Night), LIZZY MCALPINE (Ceilings), MADISON ROSE (Idolize ft. Her Demons), RACHEL CHINOURIRI (Ribs), AGAINST THE CURRENT (Good Guy), NAIA LIKA (Moonshine), & KESHA (Eat the Acid)! NEXT WEEK: 5 Years of 'Saved' by NOW, NOW!

Date: August 31, 2022Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number: S3: E6: Kyle Hutton - Three More Bottles & She's GoneArtist Short Bio - “Longest Days, Shortest Years” is the 5th full-length studio release from singer/songwriter Kyle Hutton. The 15 song project offers a ride back to a time when you listened to a record from beginning to end, and deliberately bucks the trend of experiencing an artist through a single, or an EP. “Longest Days, Shortest Years” delivers 57 minutes of the best yet from Hutton's pen and guitar. The title track of the new cd, produced by Jeffery Armstreet, explores the dichotomy of time, how a minute can feel like a lifetime and a decade can pass in the blink of an eye. Hutton, a father of 3 boys and husband of 21 years, provides wise lament on this universal subject. Michael Martin Murphey joins in on the upbeat, reflective track with a cameo on guitar and vocals. “Being in the studio with Michael Martin Murphey was one of the highlights of making this record”, states Hutton, “his willingness to be involved cemented my feelings about this song being the title track”.And it's obvious that Hutton's “Real Life Real Music” live shows and radio program have garnered him some new friends and fans. In addition to Murphey, Kyle is joined by a host of other performers lending their talents to his songs. Relative newcomer Haley Cole joins in on the woefully honest, yet somehow optimistic song “I've Loved You”. The Chubby Knuckle Choir brings their eclectic mix to “So Close to Saturday Night”, “Last Minute Austin”, and the live, unedited take of “Wingtip Shoes”, a post-depression era fable about a sharecropping family's demise. The project also includes an unforgettable performance by Jamie Wilson who joins Kyle for the duet “What it Takes to Sing These Songs”, a piece that looks directly into the soul of the independent troubadour. Three of the songs on the project were co-written with Hutton favorites: Walt Wilkins – “What I Dreamed Last Night”, Marcus Eldridge – “So Close to Saturday Night” and his oldest son Brooks Hutton – “Wallets and Watches”.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMSocial Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Website - www.kylehutton.comFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/kyle.hutton.503Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/kylehuttonmusic/Call to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and artist's social media pages. Taylor Ballantyne, Director / Photographer Ballantyne began her career in Los Angeles with commercial and creative work in the fashion and design world. She segued into video production by shooting and editing films for New York, Milan and Paris fashion weeks. Simultaneously, she studied under legendary photojournalist Ken Regan at Camera 5 Inc., where she was introduced to the commercial, film, and editorial business of photography. Here is where she began building her portfolio and film reel. In 2013 Ballantyne joined Sports Illustrated as a photographer for all brands within SI. In July 2017, she received her first national cover for Sports Illustrated; becoming one in an elite group of women to receive a national cover in the Magazine's 60-year history. In February 2018, she directed, produced and photographed her first spread in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and created a short film entitled — “In Her Own Words” - a powerful black-and-white campaign that replaced the traditional Body Paint for the issue. Under Ballantyne's direction, this was the first black-and-white, no-swimsuit series with an all female crew in the 54 year history of the SI Swimsuit magazine. In November 2020, Ballantyne relocated to Nashville and was asked to direct Jake Hoot, “The Voice” winner of 2019, in his first music video “I Would've Loved You” featuring Kelly Clarkson. This sparked Ballantynes' directorial debut in the world of music. Following her debut into the world of music videos, she was called to direct her first feature length concert film and documentary for Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Though her background lies within commercial and advertising, Ballantyne's goal is to continue on this path as a director, continuing her work in music, commercial and film. Ballantyne studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara and holds a BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City. She is currently based in Nashville but travels across the country and internationally often for work. http://www.taylorballantyne.com/ https://www.instagram.com/taylorbphoto/ https://www.instagram.com/taylorbfilm/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thewrongadvicepod/support

Scripture For Today: Ephesians 1:15“For this reason, ever since I heard about your Faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God's people...” The Lord's Prayer pt 2 Yesterday, we began an in-depth study of what is traditionally called, “The Lord's Prayer.” We learned that this prayer was actually given to the disciples by Jesus, not as a word-for-word method of praying, but as a method to use effectively. We also learned that, because of the word “Our Father” in the beginning, it was not to be used by anyone other than born again believers. When those who are not truly born again recite the Lord's Prayer, it is about as effective as reciting a meaningless poem or song from memory. You see, if you are going to pray effectively and fellowship with God from your heart, then you must actually BE a child of God. If you are not a child of God, then you cannot say from your heart that God is your Father. Amen! We hear such teachings these days about the “Fatherhood of God” or the “Brotherhood of Christ.” Some would try to make us believe that, as human beings, we are ALL children of God and that God is the Father of us all. But, in reality, that just isn't so. God is the CREATOR of all mankind. Yes. But He is not the Spiritual FATHER of all mankind. Only the believers. We, as human beings, ARE fellow “creatures.” But not children. God is not the Spiritual Father of ALL human beings. He is ONLY the Heavenly Father of those who have truly been born again by believing on the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Amen. Get offended if you want, but the Truth is the Truth and it is ONLY the Truth that will set you free. Amen! Remember, Jesus said something in John 8:44 to some very upstanding, well respected, well trained religious leaders of His day. He said, “You are of YOUR FATHER, the devil…” He was speaking to some Pharisees who, if you were to examine their lives as far as good works were concerned, there was almost nobody as righteous as they were. Yet, Jesus told THEM, “you are of your father, the devil.” Why? Because of ONE REASON ONLY. Because they did not believe on Him. And when people do pray to “Our Father, who art in Heaven…” they pray like God is in some far off land and instead of a very personal Father who is actually dwelling within their heart – at the same time He is in Heaven. Amen. That is one reason the Jewish leaders could not understand Jesus. For example, if Jesus had come along like the religious prophets of old and proclaiming something of the Old Testament God was going to come and judge them for something, He may have gotten their attention. But because He was making God PERSONAL – they were upset. Jesus came along and introduced God as “FATHER.” And the Jewish leaders could not fathom how that could even be possible. That was not the God they had learned about their entire life. If God would have come down in a pillar of fire or on the mountain top and it was filled with lightning and thunder and earthquakes, they could relate to that. But actually LOVED YOU and could relate to you in a Father – Child type of relationship… They could not understand that at all. Now, don't get me wrong. We cannot relate to God as our personal “buddy.” No, we still need to reverence Him. We still need to fear Him in a reverential type of way. But, thank God, He IS also our Father, who dwells in Heaven. Amen! Jesus is saying that the right approach to God is to come to Him BECAUSE He is your Father. And to come to Him in Praise and Worship. The Bible says, “Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed by Thy Name…” Amen! Come to Him in praise and worship and be ushered right into His presence where you can make your petitions known. Amen! Let's Pray! Oscar Wilde is credited with the quote, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery … ”. But in popular music, a cover version, remake, cover song, revival, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by someone other than the original artist or composer of a song. Sometimes, a cover version can become even more popular than the original. Enjoy these 34 cover songs from the 1980s. Another musical exhibit from The Music Museum. She knew early on that her knowledge of astrology can be a business one day. At the age of 15, she found recent translation projects of astrology. Her passion quickly turned from new-age psychological astrology to more world predictions and philosophy. Maren experienced her spiritual awakening, or what she called “death of past self,” while studying a course on philosophy at NYU. On TikTok and Dealing with the Aftermath of Her 2020 Elections Prediction Social media wasn't picking up for her until TikTok blew up. Maren wasn't surprised at being right about the elections because she already expected its outcome. She was most surprised by the attention it brought her. For her, dealing with her career's rapid growth has been the most difficult mental health journey by far in her lifetime. Her predictions made her a target of conservative pundits during the election season — even receiving death threats from them. Maren uses spiritual practices such as yoga and meditation to adjust to her new reality. Her yogi path keeps her going despite the struggles. She opts to put her energy into her career when she has problems instead of talking about them. Maren's Motivation to Continue For Maren, astrology is like an endless game of Sims — you don't know what is coming, and you only have to look forward to it. She is deeply passionate about identifying astrological patterns. She feels fulfilled helping others. With her knowledge of astrology, Maren provides sharpness, intensity, and analytical aspects to serve people as they lead their spiritual paths. Encountering Doubts and Living in Stoic Philosophy Maren immediately notices when someone is timid or conscious in some regions of chart reading. But if someone is trying to speak with her, they probably wouldn't invest time and money if they were concerned. It can be difficult to approach astrology if you cling too deeply to the concept of good and evil or "I die or live" kind of things. For Maren, she sees and accepts things as they are and doesn't necessarily ascribe inherent meaning to them. Stoic philosophy is an ancient Greek philosophy that looks at life and what is to come as something to be accepted and meditated upon. In Stoic philosophy, the true optimal state in life is not ecstatic happiness but peaceful meditation where you don't see things as good or bad — only preferable or not preferable. Maren doesn't want to be happy. Instead, she wants to be peaceful, accepting, and present. Life's Predictions and What She Looks Forward to in 2021 She already saw that at a very young age, within the age of 20 to 22, she would go through a complete death and rebirth in her identity. In 2021, Maren looks forward to being more at peace with her life. Maren wants to focus on her business and finance interests for the next few years. Noteworthy Predictions for 2021 According to Maren, 2021 would be a mixed bag than 2020. Next year's alignment of Saturn and Uranus coincided throughout history with the liberation of oppressed peoples, which indicates struggles. She sees 2021 as the year when inclusive, progressive legislation would be passed. May to July of 2021 will be a preview of 2022. June will hypothetically be when most people get a COVID-19 vaccine. Listen to the full episode to hear Maren’s predictions for the next two years and her insights into the signs and elements for 2021. 5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode [07:32] “I use the word bandwidth a lot myself as well because I always knew that I wanted to change the world and do it big.” [10:12] “The way that I've been dealing with it is prioritizing my spiritual practices like yoga and meditation. And knowing that I don't have it figured out, I don't have this solved; I'm like in the middle still of this battle right now. And I feel like I'm adjusting in a way like you get used to the turbulence, and this is your new reality.” [15:10] “I feel really fulfilled when I know that I can provide some of the sharpness, or the intensity, and like the analytical aspect into people that can use that to better serve them when they're going to lead their spiritual path in life.” [18:00] “I don't want to be happy, I want to be peaceful. Not that I don't want to be happy, but I just want to ride things out.” [34:13] “I feel radically loved when I take time to feel radically loved and don't run away from the present moment.” About Maren Maren Altman is an astrologer, author, and current philosophy graduate student. Why Women’s Success Starts with Wellness with Fredi’s Chelsea and Mitch Glaser In this fast-paced world, those who hustle often get rewarded. But does women's success have to put their health in jeopardy? Can we trade a fulfilling and healthy life for our jobs and financial security? As we’re going through a global pandemic, it may be the right time to ponder on this question. This week, siblings Chelsea and Mitch Glaser introduce us to their company, Fredi, and how it aims to help women prioritize their wellness. They also discuss their journey toward self-care, the value of nootropics, and their advice for people having a hard time amid today’s global crisis. If you want to know why wellness is central to women’s success, this episode is for you. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover how you can be your best self by taking care of your health first. Learn how nootropics help improve the chances of women's success. What is Chelsea and Mitch’s definition of true happiness? Find out in the full episode. Resources The Happiness Trap: Stop Struggling, Start Living by Dr. Russ Harris Fredi’s website Fredi on Instagram Episode Highlights Chelsea and Mitch’s Journey Before Fredi Fredi started when Mitch had a health scare due to working rigorous hours in Wall Street. He admits he neglected himself because he was scared of disappointing people. His wellness journey started once he became aware that he needed a drastic change to achieve true fulfillment. On the other hand, Chelsea started working for herself right out of college, pursuing several passion projects. She has a branding agency called Launch It Girl, which allowed her to work with ambitious women and launch their businesses. She experienced anxiety, panic attacks, and burnout due to her unrealistic expectations of career fulfillment. How Fredi Came Together Chelsea encouraged Mitch to leave the industry that was sucking his soul and join her on the path of entrepreneurship. The brands that offer nootropics portray it as a masculine product. They want the calming effect and limitless feeling of nootropics to appeal to women, not just to men. Fredi aims to make a brand for women going through different dynamics and competing priorities. Chelsea and Mitch’s Entrepreneurial Spirit Mitch decided to become an entrepreneur when he felt that he limits his potential to be fully creative. He wants to take control of his career. He also wants others to learn the wellness techniques he utilized to make his work manageable. Chelsea has always been an entrepreneur. Thus, she felt she had nothing to lose in pushing his brother's idea. Entrepreneurship allows Chelsea to avoid living in a rigid structure where she feels trapped and claustrophobic. She wants to live an authentic life that promotes her creative wave. For Chelsea, work shouldn't meddle with the most important people in your life: yourself, relationships, and family. What Is Nootropics? Nootropic supplements are coffee and prescription medications that affect cognition, giving you more energy or focus. They contain all-natural ingredients such as herbs, mushrooms, and amino acids. They also have a calming effect and give a subtle boost to your day, helping you feel better and move forward more consistently toward your goals. Managing Expectations Better At first, Chelsea struggles with meeting the unrealistic expectations she set for herself. Now she’s learned how to balance the mundane tasks by seeking help from others. Wellness taught Chelsea how to find fulfillment instead of expecting perfection. Moments of discomfort are normal, and a long-term scale of fulfillment is what's important. People often do not appreciate day-to-day fulfillment. It's all about sustainable joy. Your struggles will get worse for them to get your admission and attention. They will reach a tipping point, but they have always been there. Why We’re Hard on Ourselves We don’t give ourselves the same compassion we give to others because we tend to second-guess and get stuck in our cycles. Taking care of yourself unleashes your best self, whether it's in your professional or personal life. You lose productivity when you let your health deteriorate. Sustainable self-care is crucial because you get a better sense of your feelings and better trust in your intuition. You’ll know how to get yourself back when you get into good practice. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode [08:53] “And what I ended up doing was just really spinning my wheels for so long that I brought myself to this point of burnout just because I wasn't finding that thing that was truly fulfilling.” [15:25] “Okay, I'm feeling good, I'm happy on a day to day basis, but am I really fulfilling a bigger potential? And am I doing something where I feel like, I'm being creative and really like doing something that is me, not just sort of doing a defined job and doing it better than the next person?” [16:59] “You prioritize certain things with work, but it really shouldn't be more important than your life, and your relationships, and family.” [23:51] “It's really not about constant happiness and constant overwhelming joy every day. What it is is a longer-term scale of fulfillment.” [33:00] “When you take that time for yourself, you come back and you do work at its best level. And you show up as your best self.” About Chelsea & Mitch Chelsea and Mitch Glaser are the sister and brother co-founders of Fredi. It is a wellness brand helping women achieve career success by putting their wellness first. Chelsea is a brand strategist and serial entrepreneur. She's also a co-founder of Launch It Girl, a brand and web design firm for ambitious women. Mitch is a former Wall Street investment banker. The extreme stress and long work hours led him to a serious health scare, encouraging him to practice holistic wellness. They joined forces to build Fredi to make it simpler for goal-oriented women to prioritize their wellness and help them feel and perform their best at work. Rewriting the Stories of People with Disability with Rebekah Taussig Stories are how we make sense of the world. However, some stories fail to do justice to the complexity of the human experience. Nowhere is this perhaps more evident than in the stories of people with disability. In this episode, Rebekah Taussig, author of Sitting Pretty: The View From My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body, explains how stories influence policy decisions and shape the experiences of people with disabilities. Discrimination may be less overt, but it remains in the assumptions we have about people we perceive to be different. She shares how to tell more inclusive stories that reflect the breadth of their experience and knowledge. Tune in to find out how to change the prevailing narrative of ableism through counterstories. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Find out how stories shape cultural narratives and policy decisions around people with disability. Rebekah explains why she thinks ideal body standards are fictional. How does Rebekah feel radically loved? Find out toward the end of the episode. Resources Read all about Rebekah’s inspirational story in her book, Sitting Pretty: The View From My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body. Radically Loved Episode 318: Parenting & Evolving with Your Transgender Child with Paria Hassouri Episode Highlights Writing Sitting Pretty In 1989, Rebekah was diagnosed with cancer, and the treatment left her paralyzed at an early age. In her late 20s, she started challenging beliefs about her identity as a person with disability. She read critical theories that explained the relationship between her body and the environment. She started an Instagram account, where she documented her day-to-day life and experiences. Her book builds on this work and prompts people to ask questions and examine their beliefs about their bodies. Living in a World of Difference and Disconnection Rebekah remains stubbornly hopeful about the current world situation. She chooses to believe in the good side of humanity. At the same time, she acknowledges that there are backward beliefs threatening all this progress. Despite the polarizing environment and compelling evidence from both sides, Rebekah clings to hope and remains optimistic. The Most Difficult Hurdle For Rebekah, the hardest part is the assumptions people make about her as soon as she enters a room. These assumptions become the basis of decisions and stories around people with disability. But these stories are not representative. They are neither nuanced nor flexible, but they continue to shape our worldviews. Inclusive storytelling is the answer, whether it’s through literature, film, or other media. If we can change the narrative, it’s possible to achieve real, tangible change. Why Your Body Is Not Broken The conversations and beliefs we have around our bodies are too limiting. Unrealistic body standards are fictional since they don’t acknowledge the complexities of women’s bodies. It’s a system that punishes everyone. There are no winners in this “body competition.” How to Create Awareness and Connection The act of storytelling helps people move past their biases and prejudices. Human-centered stories compel people to explore perspectives other than their own. To rewrite prevailing narratives, we need counterstories that reflect the diversity of our perspectives. Rebekah’s Top 3 Lessons Rebekah emphasizes that trying to meet the “ideal” body is a punishing exercise. When we bring the entire spectrum of the disability to the light, everyone is better off. There’s a space for everyone at the table. Instead of being afraid of changes in your body, embrace that discomfort. Accept your body for whatever it is in the moment and whatever it’s going to be next. 5 Powerful Quotes From This Episode [08:32] “Even when it looks like everything's falling apart, there's something stronger underneath and deeper within humans that we do have a desire to connect, and we want connection and beauty and care and creativity. I have to believe that that's ultimately what we are striving for.” [25:14] “There's something about stories, human stories, personal stories. They're like the sneak attack. They go underneath that. They're like, taking you off guard by you feeling something you didn't anticipate feeling. And I think that that is how you start to see things differently.” [26:35] “I think this notion of a normal, ideal body is a fiction. I think it's a punishing fiction. And continuing to strive for or hold that up as somehow the ultimate goal is a punishing exercise.” [28:26] “When we bring all the disabled bodies to the center, I think that benefits everyone. I think that is the move that creates a more sustainable, flexible, caring, connected world.” [29:57] “Any sort of transition in a body is, like, a frightening thing for a lot of people, I think. And I would challenge and encourage and hopefully empower us to lean into that.” About Rebekah Rebekah Taussig is a writer and author from Kansas City who believes stories can change the world. For Rebekah, the words we use and the stories we tell shape the narratives and opportunities available to people in the fringes. When we tell better stories, we can make room for the diversity of our experiences. Rebekah earned her Ph.D. in Creative Nonfiction and Disability Studies from the University of Kansas. The North Wing of The Danny Lane Music Museum is dedicated to Northern Soul. Northern Soul is its own genre of music that grew out of the underground rhythm and soul scene of the late 1960s at venues such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, England (UK). This music and the associated dances and fashions quickly spread to other UK dancehalls and nightclubs like the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), Catacombs (Wolverhampton), the Highland Rooms at Blackpool Mecca, Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent) and Wigan Casino. *** The Northern part of the name refers to where in the UK the popularity first grew. It all started in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s, based on a particular style of black American soul music. A large proportion of Northern soul's original audience came from within the 1960s mod subculture. Northern soul reached the peak of its popularity in the mid- to late-1970s. At this time, there were soul clubs in virtually every major town in the Midlands and the North of England. The three venues regarded as the most important in this decade were the Golden Torch in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent (1971 to 1972), Blackpool Mecca (1971 to 1979) and Wigan Casino (1973 to 1981). *** In the book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: the history of the DJ, the authors describe Northern soul as "a genre built from failures", stating: "...Northern Soul was the music made by hundreds of singers and bands who were copying the Detroit sound of Motown pop. Most of the records were complete failures in their own time and place... but in Northern England from the end of the 1960s through to its heyday in the middle 1970s, were exhumed and exalted." I recently came out as bisexual to my very conservative Lutheran parents. Neither responded how I hoped they would, but my dad was especially ready to tell me exactly why he thought the way I am and things I’ve done are wrong and harmful to myself and others. It was a very frustrating conversation and I ended up telling my dad I would send him books because I was not emotionally ready to engage in an argument about the morality of an aspect of my identity that I have already worked to let go of shame and gain pride around. I am hoping you could recommend me some books to send them that could help them gain some empathy and understanding of LGBTQIA+ matters or human sexuality in general. I plan to send them a big bookshop.com order and I already have How We Fight For Our Lives and In the Dream House in my cart, so I think I’m looking for something a little more fact-y than memoir-y. Bonus points if it directly addresses a Christian audience or debunks harmful Christian rhetoric around homosexuality and sexual purity. -Rebekah 3. I like romance books but so many of them seem to rely on the guy doing nice things for the love interest and other people and being super hot while he’s doing it, or they’ve both been hurt before so they’re learning to trust, etc, but not so much on the shared interests that, to me, seem like important markers of a successful relationship. I recently finished Long Division by Jane Berentson, and loved how the quirky main character and her equally quirky best friend understood each other, laughed at the same things, AND he paid attention to her (as an example and spoiler if you aren’t going to read it: Gus, the best friend, tunes into Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood for like 6 months until they air an episode that Annie, the MC, mentioned loving once 2 years ago. When it finally comes on he records it so she can always watch it.) Also loved how in Beach Reach by Emily Henry the main characters are both writers and that drives a lot of their relationship. Any recommendations? It doesn’t have to be a Romance but a story with romantic strong elements. Thanks! I get so many good book recs from the show!! -Georgia 4. hi! I’m looking for books to get my best friend for her birthday at the end of september – her and I have very different reading tastes so books I think are super good aren’t necessarily things I think she’d like. her favorite books are eat, pray love and the tattooist of auschwitz – she loves books that are about travelling or an adventure, books with strong emotional themes where the characters go through a revelation of some sort, and usually likes books that end on a hopeful note. english isn’t her first language so i’m hesitant to get her anything where the language could be described as “dense”. thank you so much! -Morgan 5. Help! I’ll be teaching second grade this year and I am looking for diverse chapter book read alouds – not early chapter books that the kids can read independently. I have thankfully found plenty of those (Ely Jake’s, etc.), but books that are a couple of grade levels above. My ideal would be in the vein of Roald Dahl or Judy Blume. Stories that are interesting, introduce beautiful and sometimes challenging writing, and feature children of color. Thank you! -Malory Hi Jenn, I’m an avid reader and have been for over 10 years. I went through a great period finding a lot of books that were deeply impacting me, but in the past year, I’ve struggled to find books with that deep emotional resonance. I love contemporary works about complicated women both fiction and non-fiction. Some of the books that I’ve loved in the past include Fates & Furies by Lauren Groff, both Sally Rooney books, though I preferred Conversation with Friends, The Wrong Way to Save your Life by Megan Stielstra, and The Rules Do Not Apply by Ariel Levy. I’ve been feeling uninspired with everything I’ve read lately and I’m hoping to find something I can fall in love with and something I will often think of which is true for the books I mentioned above. All the best!! -Sofia Hello. I am taking an online art history class on women artists. I am interested in reading more about them. Fiction or non fiction are both fine, but for fiction I would prefer it was based on a real painter. I have already read “I always Loved You” based on Mary Cassat and Degas, but prefer something more focused on the artist and not a couple.
