Transpower says contractor Omexom is working through its own recommendations after the June pylon topple that caused a power outage in Northland.   An Electricity Authority report found bad practice that caused the Transpower tower to topple had probably happened before.   Unsupervised, inexperienced maintenance crews from contractor Omexom unfastened three legs at once.   Transpower Executive General Manager Mark Ryall told Mike Hosking you do need to be able to train people on the job, otherwise they'll never become competent.   But he says a trainee needs to be under direct supervision, and in this case they weren't adequately supervised.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Human error caused the disastrous incident that cut power to tens of thousands of people in Northland and cost an estimated $60 million. The investigator's report says the inexperienced work crew removed all the nuts from three of the four base plates securing the legs of the pylon to the floor so they could be sandblasted. It found it likely that the workers, from Transpower contractor Omexom, had likely done this while doing refurbishment work on other pylons. Transpower grid delivery manager Mark Ryall speaks to Susana Lei'ataua.

The Redclyffe substation near Napier flooded during Cyclone Gabrielle and turning it off turned off the power for much of Hawkes Bay and Tairāwhiti. Transpower has fixed it for now, but has faced a big decision: should it rebuild it where it is now, next to a stream? Or start again on higher ground? The choice tells us a lot about how to think about our climate future. Bernard Hickey talks about that decision with Transpower's executive general manager grid delivery, Mark Ryall. Transpower's urgent plea for residents in the wider Christchurch area to reduce their power use last night helped stave off forced power cuts.  The national electricity grid operator put out the request just before 6pm - when power use was spiking amid a cold snap - because one of its substation transformers was out for planned maintenance.  It also worked with lines companies MainPower and Orion to switch off controllable load, such as hot water systems.  Transpower's grid delivery general manager Mark Ryall spoke to Craig McCulloch.

The lights were out far and wide in the Thames-Coromandel district, and even part of the Hauraki district for several hours today, costing some businesses big time. All because a chunk of wayward plastic wound itself around a transformer creating a potential fire hazard. And that meant flicking the switch off for an extraction job. So it was a frantic start to the day for Bay Bakery in Whitianga, selling their precious hot goods for half the price to avoid the bin. Others like Manaia Cafe and Bar in Tairua had to keep their doors shut. Transpower's Mark Ryall talks to Lisa Owen.

What a fascinating episode.   Dr. Mark Ryall explains his book, a fiction, Age-Decoded, which is about genetic engineering technology and takes place in the future.  Mark says it's not "fantasy" science fiction, rather it is speculative science fiction based in the period of 2053 to 2256.When asked what inspired him to write this book, Mark says "well, I'm getting older".  :)  Also, being an athlete, he says he realizes how you do slow down as you age.   He was reading an article about genetic engineering and this is what led him to write this book.We discussed the pluses and minuses of genetic engineering and choosing to be age de-coded and not get any older, or reverse aging, which is also in his book.Very intriguing and a must listen to.You can find Mark on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.  His book Age-Decoded is at most of the major retailers, Amazon, Apple, Kobo, and Indigo.More about Mark:Mark Ryall recently retired from teaching economics at Royal St. George's College (Toronto) and Hillfield Strathallan College (Hamilton) for a combined twenty-four years. His first love in high school coaching was always cross country running. Mark's newly released speculative fiction Age-Decoded is his first novel. He wrote it to educate himself and the world about the imminent tsunami of CRISPR genetic engineering technology. The story peers 100-200 years into the future, allowing the reader to critically imagine and feel the effects of this incredible new scientific frontier. This week, John speaks to Mark Ryall, the author of Age-Decoded, a science fiction novel that explores a world in which aging can be cured and, in fact, reversed. In 1996, scientists announced the successful cloning of Dolly the Sheep. And, in 1997, the film Gattaca – a film very much in the same tradition of speculative science fiction as the subject of our last episode, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein – envisioned a world in which genetic engineering yielded genetic segregation. But while the decades since haven't given us much reason to heed its warnings, recently that's begun to change, with recent breakthroughs in the mechanics of aging, and a boom in the use of CRISPR gene-editing, including the 2018 announcement from a Chinese scientist claiming he had edited two human embryos to immunize them from HIV Ryall taught college economics and mathematics for twenty-two years. He wrote Age-Decoded in an effort to educate himself and the world about we he believes will be an imminent tsunami of CRISPR genetic engineering. And he believes this technology will fundamentally alter human nature, and that it must be carefully controlled and applied to serve humanity well.

Meet our guest, https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-ryall-2b87b2b/ (Dr. Mark Ryall), author of the new speculative fiction book, Age-Decoded.  It took some struggle and two career changes before Mark Ryall discovered his “genuine self” as a teacher. He had always yearned for a career that brought him closer to people, and teaching became the natural place for him. He went on to teach economics and mathematics at Royal St. George's College (Toronto) and Hillfield Strathallan College (Hamilton) for a combined twenty-four years. He also loved coaching cross country running, a sport which he felt makes students stronger mentally and physically, and which promotes teamwork and mutual support. While teaching, he also began painting, specializing in acrylic art depicting historic old buildings and bridges in the Hamilton area, and more recently dabbling in sports portraits and landscapes. The speculative fiction Age-Decoded is Mark's first novel. He wrote the first draft about ten years ago while he was teaching, to educate himself and the world about the imminent tsunami of genetic engineering technology. The novel was turned down by traditional publishers, so Mark accepted that rejection and let the novel sit for several years. But with his recent retirement from teaching and the full-blown emergence of CRISPR-like technology on the scientific front, he decided to work hard to update and improve the novel. He finally self-published it two months ago. Mark feels Age-Decoded is important because genetic engineering will impact human physical and psychological traits − fundamentally affecting what it means to be human. His goal is to educate people about this scientific breakthrough. Many effects will be hugely positive, as scientists work to eradicate diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, cystic fibrosis, HIV, sickle cell anemia, and even cancer. But unintended or intended negative effects are also possible with this technology. The story peers 100-200 years into the future, allowing the reader to critically imagine and feel the potential impact of genetic engineering on human nature. The story focuses on two human changes; one physical (stopping and reversing aging) and one psychological (spoiler alert: you will need to read the novel). Mark also competes in triathlons and represented Canada in the 2019 World Age-Group Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. That race was a disaster as he never completed the swim due to “technical difficulties”! But he has vowed to redeem himself, to qualify and compete once again in the Championships sometime soon in the post-Covid era. Mark currently serves as a volunteer cross country coach for Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton. His education includes BSc, MBA, and PhD (University of Toronto, Education). Mark Ryall, author of Age Decoded, joins me to discuss his new book, his career in education, and we really get into the topic of genetic engineering. Mark talks about his love of teaching and how an unexpected foray into running with his young daughter bloomed into an intensely-competitive triathlon hobby, and how he never quite felt like he fit in at engineering school. Genetic engineering is a topic that is easy to get lost in. There are so many moral and ethical concerns, and it can be quite difficult to understand in the first place. Mark and I cover many of the ethical issues and offer some attempt to make sense of CRISPR and related technologies. Mark describes many of the aspects of his book, Age Decoded, and we even get to hear him read a couple lines from the text. Age Decoded is the story of what happens to humanity after we solve the problem of aging and eventually learn how to reverse it. The book is full of excitement, curiosity, and even some romance. It's a fun read and you really learn a lot about the possibilities of the future. Thanks for tuning in, I hope you enjoy it! Mark Ryall recently retired from teaching economics at Royal St. George College (Toronto) and Hillfield Strathallan College (Hamilton) for a combined twenty-four years. Mark represented Canada in the 2019 World Age-Group Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. He enjoys acrylic art, and currently serves as a volunteer cross country coach for Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton. His education includes BSc, MBA, and PhD(University of Toronto). Get Mark's book Age-Decoded: https://books2read.com/age-decoded Lynne Ryall has been painting in her spare time ever since high school, experimenting with different styles and techniques. She is drawn back to her first love, impressionistic landscape painting, and much of her work centers on the stylization and abstraction of Canadian landscape. Although most of her subject matter is Ontario landscape, she travels extensively in Canada and abroad, taking opportunities to photograph, sketch, and paint on-site. Lynne paints mainly in oils but also works in acrylic and watercolor. Most of her large canvases are painted in the studio, but she also eagerly paints En Plein air. Lynne took studio space at the Cotton Factory in Hamilton after she retired from a career as a secondary school Visual Art, Media, and History teacher with the Peel District School Board. Connect with Lynne: lryallart.ca Lily is a Mom, entrepreneur, therapist, singer/dancer, and psychedelic journeyer - and she believes that every relationship can be transformed out of monotony and into intimacy and joy! She adores her career as a Somatic Couples Therapist, igniting kindness, connection, playfulness and passion into her clients' daily lives. She's trained with many great practitioners including Stan Tatkin (Psychoneurobiological Approach to Couples Therapy), David Mars (Transformational Couples Therapy) and Stanley Keleman (Formative Psychology). She's currently writing a book designed to bring her tools, tips and exercises to a wider audience. Her life mission is to change our culture of stigma and shame around relationship therapy/coaching! If you'd hire a coach to improve your tennis serve, why wouldn't you hire a coach to better your communication or sexual satisfaction? Discovering the fountain of youth has been the millennia-old dream of humans. We have seen it in the old stories of Herodotus to the Silicon Valley entrepreneurs talk about it. The gene-editing technology such as CRISPR has made possible of preventing diseases before it happens, which could eradicate many of the incurable illnesses we have today. However, it has also allowed us to dream once again to the possibility of eternal life. I've always in the belief that we try to maximize our time in our bodies because life is finite. What will we do with our lives if we can live forever? Will we cherish it or abuse it? In this episode, I speak with Mark Ryall, an independent researcher and author of the book "Age Decoded". We discuss the virtue of humanity and the need to examine what it means to live life. We are wired by default to think in short term but what if this becomes infinite? There is something more than eternal youthfulness and beauty beyond the lines of a finite life. Here is what we discuss in the episode;- Who is Mark Ryall and the inspiration of his book- What is CRISPR and gene editing- What is the significant and potential achievements of this technology- The ethical difference between preventing diseases and prolonging life- What does it mean for humanity to obtain eternal lifeSubscribe to my weekly/monthly newsletter here.Guest: Mark Ryall (LinkedIn)Host: Takatoshi Shibayama (LinkedIn | Twitter)Music: ShowNing (Website)
