Season 3: Happy to “Be in That Crowd” -- Americana Music Pioneer Jeff Hanna of NGBD Reflects on Those Around Him Rather Than His Career

Coming down the homestretch of Season Three of The Load Out Music Podcast, we settle into our new digs in one of the great music venues in St. Louis – The Old Rock House. Most important, we welcome yet another Grammy Award winner in Jeff Hanna, founder and longest serving member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In the 1960s, the Detroit-native landed in Long Beach, California, where music was being transformed. The sounds of folk, rock, country, bluegrass and blues were being blended in from San Francisco to Los Angeles into what is today considered roots, Americana or alt-country. But it was the bands at that time, in that place that were doing it – The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers (both led by past guest Chris Hillman), Poco, Emmylou Harris, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Buffalo Springfield, Linda Rondstadt Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell and, of course, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Hanna started hanging out at McCabe's guitar shop with a cast of characters that would shape the alt-country movement: Les Thompson, Jimmie Faddon, Ralph Barr, the legendary Jackson Browne and other founding or future members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) such as former Load Out guest John McEuen. NGBD's first big hit was a cover of Jerry Jeff Walker's “Mr. Bojangles.” But when the legendary Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson agreed to record with NGDB, it set in motion a recording effort in Nashville akin to The Band's Last Waltz documentary film and album. It was released in 1972 as Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which is in the Grammy Hall of Fame as well as The Library of Congress. Rolling Stone called the first record (there were ultimately three), “The most important record to come out of Nashville” and a 2004 ZAGAT survey called it “the most important record in country music.” True to form, Hanna just downplayed it and instead applauded those around him. “I think most of just felt like, how lucky are we get to make records,” he told me. “It was such a communal project.” All along, Hanna – in and out of NGBD – has succeeded. From the NGBD's start in 1966 to its 1985 country number one song "Modern Day Romance,” followed up by the smash hit "Fishin' in the Dark" in 1987. The song Hanna co-wrote with Marcus Hummon and Bobby Boyd in 1994, "Bless the Broken Road," won a Best Country Grammy Award for Rascal Flatts in 2006. Most recently, Hanna and NGBD – now featuring Hanna's son Jaime on vocals and guitar – has taken on another American institution near and dear to their hearts in Bob Dylan's songbook. Dirt Does Dylan, a ten-track album highlighting some of the gems from Dylan's vast catalog, was just released with stellar cuts of songs like “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry,” “Forever Young” and other Dylan hits. Throughout our conversation, Hanna spends most of his time heaping praise on everyone in his circle but himself. From his longtime NGBD bandmates to his wife Matraca Berg and son, contributors to Circle like Levon Helm, producer Ray Kennedy and others – Hanna's intention is summed up in how he described the experience of recording Will the Circle Be Unbroken. “I'm so happy to be in that crowd.” Please enjoy the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast with founder Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

This month's guest, Matraca Berg, grew up in a musical family. Her mother Icee Berg (yep, real name!) was a songwriter and session singer who at first wasn't crazy that her daughter wanted a career in country music but later became her best teacher. Her stepfather, Dave Kirby, was a songwriter whose credits include the Gene Watson classic I've Got Memories to Burn and Charlie Pride's Is Anybody Goin to San Antone. The family lived in Nashville and often hosted parties featuring writers and singers. So, it stands to reason that being around that kind of environment would kinda rub off on a person. But in Matraca's case, it was more than just a smudge; she was gifted the talent- and the drive- to have over 50 of her songs recorded, including several that helped female artists to dominate country music in the 1990s like they have never before... or since. She is a CMA and ACM-winning 2008 Nashville Songwriting Hall of Fame inductee who's quick to give credit to her co-writers, she's married to Jeff Hanna of the legendary Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and she's a pretty great solo artist too.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Con él cantó a dúo en "Are There Any More Real Cowboys?". Though she didn't begin her musical career until relatively late, Deana Carter managed to defy conventional expectations and unexpectedly shot to the top of the country charts upon the release of her 1996 debut, Did I Shave My Legs for This? Carter's success was equally unexpected considering that she didn't quite fit into the mold of a standard female contemporary country singer. Melding the popular appeal of country chanteuses with folky singer/songwriters like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Carter racked up both positive reviews and healthy sales with Did I Shave My Legs for This?, becoming one of the most pleasant success stories of the post-Garth Brooks generation. As the daughter of Nashville studio guitarist Fred Carter, Jr., Deana Carter grew up in a musical environment, and was exposed to a wide variety of music. Fred played guitar for a wide variety of musicians, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. The music of those artists would eventually seep into Deana's own style, which she hadn't yet formed when she initially tried to land a record contract at the age of 17. Despite her efforts and her father's assistance, Carter wasn't able to secure a deal, so she abandoned music to study nursing at the University of Tennessee. While she was a student, she continued to sing for fun, yet she didn't devote much energy to music. After graduation, Carter worked in a few hospitals before deciding to pursue a musical career at the age of 23. Learning the guitar for the first time, Deana also began to write songs. For several years, she worked odd jobs as she continued to develop her songwriting skills and sing at Nashville nightclubs. Eventually, one of her demo tapes made its way to Willie Nelson, while another wound up in the offices of Capitol Nashville. Nelson, who remembered her from her childhood, was impressed with Carter's songs and asked her to perform at Farm Aid VII in 1994; she was the only female artist on the entire bill. Within a year, Capitol Nashville had signed Deana Carter to a contract. Boasting six songs co-written by Carter, her debut album, Did I Shave My Legs for This?, was released to strong reviews in late summer of 1996. By the end of the year, the record had climbed to the upper reaches of the country charts and had made inroads on the pop charts, going gold in the process. Everything's Gonna Be Alright followed in late 1998. In 2001, Carter realized her dream of performing with her father on her holiday album, Father Christmas, which featured her dad on guitar. I'm Just a Girl, a recording that leans strongly toward adult pop, was released on Arista Nashville in 2003. The Story of My Life followed in 2005 on Vanguard. A second Vanguard release, The Chain, appeared in 2007. Carter concentrated on songwriting after a series of life events kept her away from recording. She signed a deal with Warner Chappell and began returning to Nashville regularly. She and Matraca Berg had co-written "You and Tequila"; each had recorded it without much notice. But when Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter's version was released in 2011, the single hit the Top Five on the country charts and sold over a million digital copies. Since she was writing full-time anyway, Carter decided to record as well. She formed her own label, Little Nuggett Records, and released Southern Way of Life in March of 2014.

"Come Back Down", es una invitación a volver a casa tras estar demasiado tiempo fuera. 387 - Tim Krekel Originally broadcast on the radio many years ago, the Tim Krekel interview is being brought out now. This is an interview recorded in the hotel room of Tim Krekel prior to a performance he did with Marshall Chapman and Tommy Womack. A man from Louisville, Kentucky, he was born October 10, 1950 and he passed away June 24, 2009. Tim Krekel was a singer, songwriter, guitar player and by all accounts a very kind, sweet man. He was a very unique recording artist and had a unique sound that was a nice blend of rock, country, some blues and what they now call Americana. Krekel wrote songs that were recorded by other people: Alan Jackson, Crystal Gayle, Martina McBride, Patty Loveless, and he also toured with Jimmy Buffett as a member of the Coral Reefer Band. he wrote a song with Jimmy Buffett called Morris' Nightmare that appeared on the iconic live album "You Had To Be There!" He wrote with a lot of great songwriters: Marshall Chapman, Matraca Berg, Danny O'Keefe and others. I hope you enjoy this interview with a great artist who has left us all with incredible songs.

Alice Randall, a Harvard-educated novelist, professor, and songwriter, is the only African-American woman to have written a #1 country hit. She joins us to talk about her career as a songwriter and so much more EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE  The guys chat about why Paul has been M.I.A. and announce a new contest for a personalized signed copy of Lamont Dozier's new autobiography. PART TWO - 7:13 mark Scott gets together with Alice Randall in Nashville to find out why her dad was so driven to highlight women's contributions to music; how she concluded that country lyrics are the modern day equivalent of metaphysical poetry and 17th Century Puritan sermons; the encouragement she received from Hal David; why she spent hours studying lyrics in the basement of the Country Music Hall of Fame; the reason that Steve Earle cussed her out; why it's harder to be a woman in country music than to be black; and her theory that country music should be defined as three chords and four specific truths. ABOUT ALICE RANDALL Alice Randall is a Harvard-educated African-American novelist who lives in Nashville and writes country songs. Along with Matraca Berg, Alice co-wrote Trisha Yearwood’s chart-topping single “XXX’s and OOO’s (An American Girl),” making her the first—and, so far, only—African-American woman to write a #1 country hit. Additionally, she co-wrote Mo Bandy’s Top 40 hit “Many Mansions,” as well as Judy Rodman’s “Girls Ride Horses, Too,” which was the first Top 10 written by either Alice or her co-writer, future Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Mark D. Sanders. After forming an early songwriting partnership with Steve Earle, Alice went on to have her songs recorded by a long list of artists, including Holly Dunn, Marie Osmond, Glen Campbell, Jo-El Sonnier, Walter Hyatt, Pat Alger, Matraca Berg, Radney Foster, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Crystal Gayle, and Hank Thompson. Along with Mark O’Connor and Harry Stinson she wrote the groundbreaking “Ballad of Sally Anne.” Alice is a New York Times Bestselling novelist who has authored The Wind Done Gone, Pushkin and the Queen of Spades, Rebel Yell, Ada's Rules, and the forthcoming Black Bottom Saints, which is partially inspired by her formative years in Detroit. In addition to her fiction writing, Alice teamed with her daughter, Caroline Randall Williams, to write Soul Food Love: Healthy Recipes Inspired by One Hundred Years of Cooking in a Black Family. She is currently a Writer-in-Residence at Vanderbilt University where she teaches a number of courses, including Country Lyric in American Culture. She was featured in Ken Burns’ acclaimed Country Music documentary spotlighting the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the genre’s development. Not only does she write songs, but Randall thinks deeply about, and is deeply moved by, the literary value of song lyrics.

Not one to shy away from political discussions or even in song form, Cris covers all of this in his music and in conversation. But first Granville Automatics Vanessa Olivarez and Elizabeth Elkins drop some dark history nuggets from their latest record Radio Hymns. Cris Jacobs guitarist and vocalist from The Bridge were a band from Baltimore, Maryland that called it quits 10 years after forming. Since then Cris released his critically acclaimed albums Dust To Gold and a collaborative album with Ivan Neville, Neville Jacobs. Cris and I dive into a chunk of his catalog but first, we talk about The Bridge and it's jam band roots. Then even why after 10 years, what's it like to venture out on your own and handle change. PART ONE Scott and Paul go down the rabbit hole of why it's just not the same when certain famous musicians aren't accompanied by their indispensable musical compatriots. PART TWO - 8:15 mark Scott and Paul call up Matraca to get the lowdown on why she wanted to marry songwriter Red Lane when she was four years old; how she ended up with her first hit after crashing Bobby Braddock's party and sneaking into his music room; why she begged Deana Carter NOT to release "Strawberry Wine" as her first single; which of her songs she believes was partially inspired by Harlan Howard from beyond the grave; and why she doesn't want to be in the room with the producer or artist the first time she hears their version of one of her songs. ABOUT MATRACA BERG Matraca Berg landed her first #1 country single as a songwriter when she was just 18 years old. She went on to earn well over a dozen more Top 10 hits by artists such as Patty Loveless (who found success with “I’m That Kind of Girl” and “You Can Feel Better”), Trisha Yearwood (who scored with “Wrong Side of Memphis,” “XXX’s and OOO’s,” and “Everybody Knows”), and Deana Carter (who hit #1 with “We Danced Anyway” and “Strawberry Wine,” the latter earning the award for CMA Song of the Year). Other hits from the Matraca Berg songbook include Reba McEntire’s “The Last One to Know,” Martina McBride’s “Wild Angels,” The Dixie Chicks’ “If I Fall You’re Going Down with Me,” and Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter’s hit duet, “You and Tequila.” The list of others who’ve recorded Matraca’s songs includes Linda Ronstadt, Dusty Springfield, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, and Randy Travis. In addition to her success on the mainstream country charts, Berg is what All Music calls “an unclassifiable but utterly classy singer/songwriter and recording artist.” Her debut album, Lying to the Moon, spawned two Top 40 singles and earned her an ACM nomination for Top New Female Vocalist. Her Sunday Morning to Saturday Night album was named one of the Top 10 albums of the year by Time magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and USA Today, while The Dreaming Fields has earned rave reviews from Rolling Stone, NPR, The New York Times, and others. Berg has received three Grammy nominations for Best Country Song, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008, and received the prestigious ACM Poet’s Award in 2017.

This week, two conversations with country music families at their heart. First, up a feature interview with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band co-founder Jeff Hanna and his wife, songwriter Matraca Berg. Matraca's mother wrote songs and had other family in the business. She's had a commanding career with numerous hits including the CMA song of the year 1997, “Strawberry Wine.” Berg is also a deeply respected recording artist who makes albums as exceptional as they are rare. Hanna migrated to Music City from California, but he's got this family tradition thing down, evidence his son Jamie joining the newest iteration of the Dirt Band, which is touring with a new lineup after a profound shakeup. There's a lot of news in our talk about the reconfiguration of that important group.   Later in the hour, Glen Campbell's daughter Ashley Campbell steps out on her own with a debut solo album. She's been recognized for her talents as a singer, songwriter and banjo player, but she's been through one of the ultimate family challenges. The Lonely One balances roots, country and pop.

Steve Cooper talks with singer/songwriter Deana Carter. Deana is the daughter of legendary Nashville studio guitarist Fred Carter Jr. After college graduation she worked in a few hospitals deciding to pursue a musical career at the age of 23. For several years she worked odd jobs as she continued to develop her songwriting skills and sing at Nashville nightclubs. Eventually one of her demo tapes made its way to Willie Nelson while another wound up in the offices of Capitol Nashville. Nelson, who remembered her from childhood, was impressed with her songs and asked her to perform at Farm Aid VII in 1994 where she was the only female on the bill. Within a year, Capitol Nashville had signed her to a contract. Boasting six songs she co-wrote, her debut album, Did I Shave My Legs For This? was released to strong reviews in late summer of 1996. By the end of the year the record had climbed to the upper reaches of the country charts and had made inroads to the pop charts going gold in the process. Everything's Gonna Be Alright followed in late 1998. In 2001, she realized her dream of performing with her father on the holiday album Father Christmas. I'm Just a Girl, a recording that leans strongly towards pop was released on Artista Nashville in 2003. The Story of my Life followed in 2005 on Vanguard and a second Vanguard release, The Chain came out in 2007. She then concentrated on songwriting after a series of life events kept her away from recording. She signed a deal with Warner Chappell and began returning to Nashville regularly. She and Matraca Berg had co-written You and Tequila and when the Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter version was released in 2011, the single hit the Top Five on the country charts and sold over a million digital copies. Since she was writing full-time anyway, she decided to record as well. She formed her own label, Little Nugget Records and released Southern Way of Life this year.
