Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Evan Glazer, MD, a colleague at Regional One Health in Memphis, TN, part of the University of Tennessee Health Science (UTHSC) system. Dr. Glazer is a practicing surgical oncologist and Associate Professor of Surgery at UTHSC. He also received Memphis Magazine's 2024 Innovator Award. During our 25-minute conversation, Dr. Glazer described the extensive training that led to his current position as a surgical oncologist at Regional One Health. He completed four years of college, four years of medical school, five years of general surgery residency, two years of a research fellowship on liver and pancreas cancer, and then two years of clinical fellowship at the Moffit Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, a total of 17 years of training! Dr. Glazer is now a Board-Certified Surgical Oncologist. Dr. Glazer explained that in the US, general surgeons provide most surgical cancer care. However, some cases are complex and require additional skills, which is where a surgical oncologist can step in. Surgical oncologists routinely operate on cancer patients, which gives them a level of experience and expertise not always possessed by general surgeons.  Dr. Glazer explained how advances in neuroimaging, including CT, MRI, and PET scans, have aided surgeons by better identifying anatomical structures that vary from patient to patient. Collaboration between medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and others can lead to optimal clinical results. Cancer is not always a "death sentence" as it used to be. To learn more, please watch on YouTube or listen on your favorite streaming device! To contact Dr. Glazer, please call Regional One Health: 901.545.7100.Please click "Fanmail" and share your feedback! If you enjoy an episode, please share with friends and colleagues. Episode 262 features unique barbecue and baseball stories with the president of AmazingRibs.com, Clint Cantwell and co-host of the National League Town podcast, Jeff Hysen while Chef Ray Sheehan assumes guest co-hosting duties. Clint Cantwell is president of AmazingRibs.com which is a leading online resource for barbecue and grilling information.  As president, Clint performs day-to-day operations, creates recipes, writes articles, shoots photos, and does whatever else is needed to help run the heavily heavily trafficked website.  He is also a champion pitmaster and an outdoor cooking content creator.  Clint was named one of the "10 Faces of Memphis Barbecue" by Memphis Magazine in May of 2015 and was the winner of the Travel Channel's “American Grilled” nationwide cooking competition series.  Clint previously worked as a public relations professional in New York City and shares two incredible baseball stories.  One involves the 2000 World Series, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza, and a broken bat.  The other involves Barry Bonds record breaking 756th home run baseball which is prominently displayed in the National Baseball Hall of fame in Cooperstown, New York.  Jeff Hysen is a New York Mets fan.  He channels his long-time love and vast knowledge of his favorite baseball team into the podcast, National League Town which he co-hosts with Greg Prince.  There is a lot more than meets the eye with Jeff as he is a lawyer as well as a stand-up comedian.  His ideas for improving the game of baseball are insightful and worth a listen by us as well as by those who are in charge of tinkering with the game's rules.  This is a baseball discussion without arguments and with plenty of interesting information.  We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/ We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.   If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you. Rainbow Farm O what tangled webs we weave, the cute little rabbits led by Imperitia have been successful in pulling their party to the extreme left. Fancy beaten down to the point of submission has capitulated to the calls and demands for Impeachment as Operation Take Down Pete continues. Her lead attack dog Shifty the Weasel leads the charge as Nads the Walrus is regulated to second fiddle. The Shifty Show is just another nothing burger as KT, the Turtle from the Bourbon Belt and leader of the Elephants just waits on the foregone political conclusion from the House so he can chew it up and spit it out like the rotten piece of lettuce it is. Pete continues to drain the swamp and the Left continues to howl with displeasure. Many of the deep state are shown the door to include two little Ukrainian twin bears, Beefy and Atticus. The new election is just around the corner and presidential pretenders like CPL aka Avy the Anteater are exposed as frauds while the others split into two camps: the Bolsheviks led by Old Red the Bear and the Mods led by Sniffy the Hound. Pete like the rest of the Elephants just sit back and enjoys the show and circular firing squad of Donkeys such as the maniacal debate known as the Huss, Fuss and Cuss in Sin City the barnyard casino. Another pretender a rich potbellied Pig named Wiltberg, Wilty for short, one of the richest animals on the Farm is trying to buy the nomination. Who will the Donkeys pick? Will it be the cute young possum A. E. Neuman; Old Red and his coveted balloon, Sniffy, Dyani the Doe, Peppermint Patty the Meerkat or Wilty? Will anyone challenge Justice, have they learned from their mistakes of the past? How will they fare against Pete in the General? Will the Donkeys screw Old Red again? Will Shrill parachute in at the last minute to save the day? Is the Farm headed for Revolution? Join along and enjoy this sequel to Rainbow Farm and find the answers to these questions. Robert Williams is a retired Army officer who lives in Northern Virginia. Enlisting in the US Army in 1982 into the Infantry his first assignment was Fort Lewis, Washington. The high point of this first tour was climbing Mount Rainer and many weekends spent in Pioneer Square Tavern in Seattle. His thirty-two year Army career was one of two halves the first being assignments with the Infantry and the latter eighteen years as a Russia Foreign Area officer with multiple assignments in Eastern Europe and missions in Russia proper. Born in 1960 in Memphis, Tennessee he lived there a very short time before moving to West Memphis, Arkansas. Growing up as the son of a school teacher he was encouraged from an early age to read and to this day remains an avid reader. His summers were spent in Tyronza , Arkansas where he along with his siblings and cousins worked for their maternal grandfather chopping cotton and soy beans. Cotton in the south was a year round affair beginning with planting in the spring, chopping in the summer and packing down the trailers in the fall when it was harvested. During spare time he read the Hardy Boys and classics from Mark Twain to include Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. After graduating from high school Bob moved to Salinas, California before moving to southern California where he lived in Ventura. When living in Salinas he became enamored with the famous local author John Steinbeck reading several of his classics. His favorites were The Grapes of Wrath and Cannery Row. After a few years living in California he moved back to Arkansas and shortly thereafter enlisted in the Army. While in College in 1987 at the University of Memphis and enrolled in a Medical Anthropology course the seed for writing was planted. A course requirement he penned received high praise and encouragement from his instructor Dr. Ruthbeth Finerman . Ms. Finerman encouraged Bob to make an attempt at getting the paper published as an article in Memphis Magazine. He never made the attempt but the praise and encouragement from such an esteemed professor who he greatly admired stuck with him for years to come. Years later when in a Master’s Program for Russian and Eastern European Studies he would be required to write a thesis on the Russia and Chechnya conflict 94/96. He also dove head on into more reading in the required Russian literature his favorite being Fyodor Dosvetsky’s Crime and Punishment. But it was a British author, George Orwell and his allegorical novella Animal Farm that was his favorite. This story would resurface seventeen years later and while on vacation with his family in South Carolina the seed planted in Memphis in 1987 twenty plus years earlier would germinate and he would pen Rainbow Farm. www.amazon.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/robtwilliams2.mp3

RAINBOW FARM by Robert R. Williams Rainbow Farm is an account of the state of US political affairs since the election of Donald Trump as the Forty-Fifth President. It uses the same principle as George Orwell did in Animal Farm where certain notorious personalities come to life as animals on the farm. It exposes the hypocrisy of both US political parties, Donkeys and Elephants, in their dealings with each other as well as their hypocritical views of other farms. When it comes to US foreign policy, it exposes how US criticisms of other farms’ actions are really actions that are the same as its own. It shows how we all are similar in nature and one and the same with just different means trying to achieve the same ends. You will immediately recognize certain personalities like the flamboyant Pete, sexy Rex, Shrill, and Cam, but other personalities portrayals are more cryptic, requiring analysis to determine who that character may be. The story begins with the arrival of Pete to the farm up to the point of the election and the aftermath of what is undoubtedly the greatest political upset in modern history. Not all is serious, and not all is politics. Join the animals on the farm in their favorite pastime as they observe the annual bull-riding competition on Justice; watch Regan in her inferno as she slowly gets grilled by Sly, and have a front row to the Hen’s March, the Coup, and Inquisition. Enjoy the in-depth conversation between Rex and Pete, and finally contemplate the final interview of the Wise Old Owl on numerous topics which are afflicting today’s society. There is something for everyone in Rainbow Farm. Hopefully, the result of reading it will be an honest self-critique of ourselves and America and more acceptance of all things different. Thanks for joining us on the Memphis Destination Guide Part 4 – Memphis Good Eats and Good Sleeps.Memphis is not surprisingly a very active, entertaining city, and with that comes a very unique culinary experience – from Memphis BBQ to Creole to Elvis inspired delights – Memphis has an enormous amount of variety and spice. And since we are in Memphis and you are probably here because of the King, let's get two places that are must visit out of the way first. The oldest cafe still in operation in Memphis is the legendary Arcade Cafe. Located at 540 South Main St. You can't miss the neon signs inviting you into the comfy cafe and the plush booths. It is reported that Elvis visited this restaurant frequently and enjoyed their breakfasts and burger options. Today, you can sit in the same booth that Elvis sat in and order Elvis inspired treats. The restaurant's seating is limited and it can get very, very, busy, so plan on waiting for some time if there are events going on in town related to Elvis. An interesting fact is that the Arcade was the location that sparked Memphis' film industry in 1988. Night Train was filmed here as well as many other films including Great Balls of Fire!, the docu-film about another Memphis legend – Jerry Lee Lewis.Next up on the Elvis gastronomic tour is Marlow's Ribs and Restaurant, located just minutes from Graceland and immediately recognizable by the fleet of pink Cadillac limosine shuttles that offer transport to and from the restaurant. Previously known as the Whitehaven Ranch House, it was a favourite BBQ of the King himself. This family operated BBQ offers up some excellent ribs, pulled pork and beef brisket, along with catfish, burgers and the best hunka hunka apple pie in the USA. Along with the food, you will find the service and friendly family atmosphere to be excellent. Prices are also affordable for both lunch and dinner. In the evening they offer live entertainment on some days. The next restaurant we highly recommend if you are looking for unique and romantic atmosphere and incredible food is restaurant iris. Named best restaurant, best service and best chef by Memphis Magazine restaurant iris serves up some of the most creative and delicious creole dishes in the south. Located near the historic Overton Square of Midtown the restaurant is located right inside a victorian mansion house. Parking is available free of charge across the street. There is also cheap parking at the overtone parking garage and valet service is only $8. The parking may be cheap, but the iris is a high end restaurant offering up an ever changing menu. If you want to treat yourself and your loved one to an exceptional and unique dinner, this is the place. Now I know a lot of listeners are looking for not only good eats, but cheap eats. And you can have both in Memphis. If you are looking for another Memphis delicacy that does not include BBQ sauce, check out Gus' world famous friend chicken. It is located in downtown Memphis at 310 s front st. And even though the exterior has its own southern wear and tear, get inside for the best fried chicken you have ever had. Try the coconut cream pie of the pecan pie to top off the meal. Other franchise locations are available so check online to the one closest to you.And if you are still craving southern treats, head over to Memphis' own Miss Polly's Fried Chicken and Waffles. Located right on Beale St. This simple eatery offers up some fabulous fried chicken and waffles. After a night on Beale St. This may be the best spot to cure that hang over. The summers in Memphis can be brutal and the best spot to cool down is at an old gas station. No, we are not kidding. Back on the 1920s, a Sinclair gas station began giving away free snow cones to children as their parents filled up their automobiles. The snow cones were a bigger hit than the gas filling station so by the 1960s the snow cones became the main business, along with of course, a car wash. Today, the car wash is defunct, but the snow cones and the roadside foodstop is serving up some of the best cool treats in the south. You may recognize the location from the movie Great Balls of Fire, the story of Jerry Lee Lewis.Of course, Memphis has some amazing BBQ joints and top end restaurants. Memphis loves its restaurants and I am sure you will find some amazing ones on your stay. Now you are probably going to Memphis and thinking that the best bet would be to stay near Graceland, as all the attractions should be there and there should be a great number of hotels. Even though there are some hotels in the area and the newly built Guest House at Graceland, we recommend that you stay downtown close to Beale Street. The area around Graceland has seen better times and there certainly are motels in the area that offer low rates – but there is usually a reason for this. If security is of importance to you, or you are travelling solo or with younger children, I would not recommend this area, especially if you need to come and go at night. There is, of course the huge Guest House at Graceland, that is available right next to Graceland itself, but the rooms are very costly, the food is overpriced and from the multitude of guest reviews, the service is hit and miss. If Graceland is your only stop in Memphis, then you may want to consider this, but if you wish to enjoy everything Memphis has to offer, you may want to check in elsewhere.Downtown and the areas around Beale Street offer up much more for your money. There are exceptional hotels in these areas including the Peabody, with the ducks. I just checked on experiencethis360 and it is 18% off for the suite. Check out the web site for the current promotions. We recommend The Best Western, La Quinta Inn and Suites, The Holiday Inn Express and the Westin Memphis on Beale Street. All of these hotels range from $70-250 per night but also offer discounts every now and then from 10-40% off.For the budget conscious and those with a rental car or their own transportation, you can look for some out of the area hotels and motels. East and North Memphis and some hotels around the airport are as low as $44 per night. Again, you get what you pay for and it pays to look at the reviews of other guests before making a decision. There are very limited B&Bs in Memphis so if you are looking for this type of accommodation start searching and book in advance. If you vacation to Memphis falls into any of the festivals or especially during any celebration of Elvis' life, be prepared to find a lot of restaurants booked as well as limited options when it comes to hotels. It is best to book well ahead of time and make reservations whenever possible. On our next episode we will feature our Graceland Visitor's Guide that will help you plan an enjoyable trip to Graceland. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Memphis Type History: The Podcast

In this episode of Memphis Type History: The Podcast, we look at the history behind a few Memphis mansions. Hear from Caitlin about Ashlar Hall's many lives and the history behind the Woodruff Fontaine House. Then hear Rebecca tell a little history and description of the Annesdale mansion which could be your next wedding location.     Ashlar Hall Robert Brinkley Snowden grew up in Annesdale with his parents, Robert Bogardus Snowden and Annie Overton Brinkley Snowden, who lived in the Annesdale mansion because Annie’s dad bought it for them (learn more about Annesdale from Rebecca later in the show!) He went to Princeton to study architecture and returned to Memphis in 1896 to build everyone’s favorite 11,000 square foot local castle at 1937 Central Avenue – Ashlar Hall! This quote that Creme de Memph dug up from Memphis: An Architectural Guide about the Gothic Revival Mansion was simply delightful: "one wonders what books about medieval castles Snowden brought back with him from Princeton, or perhaps the whole may have been influenced by a too-early reading of Ivanhoe." The three-story, 8-bedroom mansion only cost $24,900 to build, which is $683,767.48 in today’s money. Inside are six bars, five bathrooms, and a swimming pool. Rumor has it there are two secret passages under the mansion: One passing under Lamar to Snowden mansion in Annesdale and the other leading under Central to the University Club’s pool area. Snowden would go on to take over the Peabody Hotel when it relocated in 1925, as the original one was started by his great-grandfather, Colonel Robert C. Brinkley, back in 1869. After Robert died in 1942, the place went into disrepair and became a Grisanti’s restaurant called Conestoga Steak House at some point in the ‘60s. In 1970 it became Ashlar Hall Restaurant. In 1983 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The mansion’s next life began in the ‘90s when Prince Mongo turned it into a nightclub called the Castle for a few years before abandoning it. Sometime around 2013, ownership started switching around for Ashlar Hall and the property fell further into disrepair. There are links below for the latest on its current life. Woodruff-Fontaine House This mansion of Memphis is located at 680 Adams in the heart of Victorian Village. In 1845, Amos Woodruff and his brother arrived in Memphis from Rahway, New Jersey, with the intent of expanding their business of making carriages. Although his brother went back to New Jersey, Amos found great success with carriages in Memphis and his other ventures: the Overton Hotel, two banks, a cotton compress firm, a lumber company, running the Memphis & Ohio Railroad, and the Southern Life Insurance Company In 1870, Woodruff spent $12,000 on land in “Millionaire’s Row,” in what was then the outskirts of Memphis. It's now known as Victorian Village, and it was here that he started building his five-story French Victorian mansion at a cost of $40,000. He also built a carriage house on the property alongside beautiful gardens and fountains. He lived in this 18-room mansion, with its three great halls and a three-story tower, with his wife, Phoebe, and their four children: Sallie, Mollie, Frank, and Cora. Many believe that the Woodruff-Fontaine house is haunted by Mollie Woodruff’s ghost. Some haunted moments include staff seeing Mollie's form in smoke, seeing her sitting on the bed in her former childhood room, and her demonstrations of anger like slamming doors and breaking items when anything gets moved or redecorated. Supposedly, her bed is sometimes dented as if someone has been lying there.... even though it’s roped off from all visitors. One paranormal website said she once told museum docents how they should have the furniture arranged. So of course we have to tell you more about her in this episode! In the 1960s, the mansion was in danger of demolition. So the Memphis chapter of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities started raising funds to renovate the property. They outfitted it for modern times, restored antique elements, and even found a fresco on one of the ballroom’s ceilings! It opened back up in 1964, although it wasn’t quite finished up at that point yet. Many people donated the furniture and stuff that’s inside, and how it’s a proper museum showing 1800s life in Memphis! Annesdale Mansion The Annesdale mansion was built in 1850 on Lamar Avenue which, at the time, was called Pigeon Roost Road. The home was originally built by Dr. Samuel Mansfield, a wholesale druggist from Maryland, on 200 acres on the outskirts of Memphis. Nineteen years later, Colonel Robert Brinkley, the guy who built the Peabody Hotel bought the estate as a wedding gift to his daughter Annie and it was named Annesdale, for Annie's Dale. Since 1869, Annesdale has been home to the same family for at least 7 generations. Annie married Col. Robert Bogardus Snowden. And for 160 years, members of the socially prominent Snowden family lived here. It is Italian Villa in style, built with bricks made on the site. It has a four-story tower which overlooks the current seven and a half acre park-like setting. The Details The Annesdale is an 1850 antebellum mansion nestled amongst seven and a half acres of elegant lawns and gardens. It holds a grand parlor, spiral staircase, and a marble entryway. A great description can be found in a Memphis Magazine article which states,  We were told that the +17,000-square-foot home has 13 rooms, five bedrooms, and four and a half baths. The downstairs public spaces have 14-foot ceilings, and the period details include: 11 fireplaces, pocket doors, carved walnut paneling, intricate needlework panels over the windows, stained glass, painted ceilings with exquisite figural details, ornate plasterwork and lustrous oak floors. Ken Robison is the one who purchased the home and estate in 2010 and rennovated and reopened the mansion as an event space. He says the Snowdens have been extremely gracious in helping him buy back antique pieces from family members that were original to the home. He has found additional items that once belonged there through other sources. In particular, he is especially proud of the portrait of Annie Overton Brinkley which hangs in the music room. As history tells us, when Annie married Colonel Robert Bogardus Snowden, her father, Colonel Robert C. Brinkley, made Annesdale a wedding gift from her father. And as the new owner likes to say, 'Annie has come home at last.' A later discovery... In 2016 a bone fragment, possibly human, was found in the grate of a boarded-up fireplace inside the mansion when a photographer came across it during a photoshoot. It went under investigation but Rebecca couldn't find if a verdict was ever made aside from knowledge that it was very very old, likely from the Civil War era which would make sense since the mansion did serve as a hospital during that time. If anyone knows of any updates on the discovery, please tell!
