Gabriel Lencioni is a young, equine vet with an interest in horse welfare and behaviour. Recently qualified, Gabriel is already embarking on research that just might change the way we think about horse welfare in equestrian sport - he is creating an AI model to assess horse welfare during competition. Not your regular AI tech-bro, Gabriel shares with us his journey into animal behavior and welfare, and why he is determined to leverage the latest technology to improve the lives of horses, vets and owners. As our first guest from South America, we also explore cultural perspectives on animal welfare, and as always, we talk about how optimistic we are the future of horse sports. Dr Mendl is a professor of animal behaviour and welfare at the Bristol Veterinary School, University of Bristol. His research focuses on cognition, emotion, development, individuality and social behaviour in domestic animals. Mike starts by introducing his background and giving some alternative options to start in the research field of animal behaviour and welfare aside from doing a PhD, postdoc, or fellowship. He then dives into the background of how he is working together with his collaborators studying emotions, welfare and cognition in animals. He presents the methods used to understand what animals are experiencing, and cognitive bias as an indicator of animal emotion and welfare.Mike talks about his multiple research studies with different species of domestic animals, rats, and even bees, and the challenges of knowing whether emotion and affective states are consciously experienced in other species. Mike shares his results of a study of lateralized behaviour as an indicator of affective states in dairy cows, with the animals in a negative state predicted to be more likely to process novel or unexpected information using the right hemisphere of their brain. This leads Sabrina and Mike to discuss the concept of novelty and environmental enrichment, training with enrichment devices, rewards, and how this might also affect the right hemisphere activity in the brain. Mike shares his work studying 'trap and release' effects on the small pig-like animal, the peccary, which is considered a pest animal in Brazil. Using a cognitive bias approach, the aim of this work was to understand the welfare implications and potential negative effects caused by trapping and release on the animals. Finally, Mikes discusses his work in understanding how animals live in the present, how their memories may work and how they may plan for the future. He shares how knowing more about this “mental time travel” in animals can have a lot of beneficial captive management implications. Tradition, tradition! In honor of a new Yiddish production of Fiddler on the Roof, we're heading back to Anatevka. Our Jewish guest is Rachel Zatcoff, who plays Tzeitel in The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene Off-Broadway production, Fidler afn Dakh. Our Gentile of the week is James Monroe Števko, who plays Mendl, the rabbi's son. They tell us about learning Yiddish for the show and what it's like working with director Joel Grey and Jackie Hoffman, who plays Yenta. We also sit down with Alisa Solomon, author of Wonder of Wonders: A Cultural History of Fiddler on the Roof, to discuss the cultural significance of Fiddler on the Roof, which first opened on Broadway in 1965, as well as the Sholem Aleichem stories the play is based on. An enigmatic TECHNO journey into the feelings of Black civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King. This epic collaboration of sound and speech tells the story of the torment and anguish experienced in America during the years of the Black Civil Rights movement. Dubbed with dialogue from the world famous 'I have a dream' speech, and intelligently mixed with the sonourous sounds of techno tracks from various producers like Stephan Bodzin, Davis & May, Dusty Kid and Florian Mendl - DJ Colin John seemlessly mixes the story of pain suffering in sunny contrast with happiness.
