“If you're sitting on a board, you're a member of the executive leadership team…You need to make sure you're stepping back and understanding geopolitical risk, social, cultural risk, legal, regulatory, risk, activism. What are the activists looking at?... Who are the key stakeholders that you need to be aware of so that you can make sure that you are tracking those risk areas and, and their relevance to your company and how you need to be responding to those…You want to be proactive. “  Tara Giunta on Electric Ladies Podcast You might have heard about the Securities and Exchange Commission's final climate risk disclosure rules. All that destruction you see in the news from hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, floods and droughts has real financial implications – that's why investors have been demanding the SEC require better reporting on climate risk. What do they really mean? Listen to Tara Giunta, Global Co-Chair of ESG & Sustainable Finance Practice at mega law firm Paul Hastings to find out, in simple English, in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. They also share insightful career advice. You'll hear about: What exactly do the SEC climate risk disclosure rules require companies to disclose? What companies nationally are affected by the new California climate risk disclosure laws? What impact will the legal challenges really have on the SEC rules and California laws? How should senior management teams and boards of directors prepare and respond to them? Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “You need to be looking 360 in terms of industry, what's developing, what's coming down the pike from a technology standpoint, from a risk standpoint. You should be educating yourself constantly and stretching yourself to go into a new area. Don't just be content to sit and do the same thing….Push yourself to do something a little different, stretch…because that broadens you as a professional, first of all. It's just so much more interesting than doing the same thing every day. But, it also makes you a better professional… because you are seeing things that the other people who are just doing the same old, same old, aren't necessarily seeing.” Tara Giunta on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here.

In today's episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we explore key themes from the GreenFin 24 conference — including data, disclosures, and advancing the low-carbon transition in emerging markets. We also hear how these topics are prompting an evolution in the role of sustainability professionals and driving a need for greater internal collaboration.   "There's a sense that we can make progress and there are viable solutions out there," says Kristina Wyatt, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Sustainability Officer at carbon accounting software company Persefoni. "There are plenty of projects, technologies, opportunities to deploy capital toward the transition. But one of the real challenges is speed and the need to deploy more capital faster." We hear how banks are changing the way they look at energy transition opportunities in an interview with Samantha Norquist, Chief Sustainability Officer at Maryland-based Forbright Bank. To understand how the role of accountants and sustainability professionals is changing, we talk with Sarah Digirolamo, a partner at audit, consulting and advisory firm Deloitte, where she is US Audit & Assurance Financial Services ESG Leader and US Investment Management ESG Leader. "What's really interesting about the sustainability space is that in order for it to evolve in the way that people are looking to make change, it takes great collaboration, probably more so than any area I've seen before," Sarah says. "So many are being asked to come outside of their comfort zone."  And we explore how the current landscape is impacting the way companies approach diversity, equity and inclusion in an interview with Alphonso David, President and CEO of the Global Black Economic Forum, a group dedicated to elevating and advocating for Black and marginalized communities around the world.  Check out our prior coverage of GreenFin 24 here:   Bezos Earth Fund director on how to drive climate, nature action: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/bezos-earth-fund-director-on-how-to-drive-climate-nature-action     How to finance a nature-positive future and transform industries: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/how-to-finance-a-nature-positive-future-and-transform-industries     GreenBiz Group hosts the GreenFin conference and S&P Global Sustainable1 is a sponsor.    This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global.        Copyright ©2024 by S&P Global       DISCLAIMER By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. “Regulation can really be a catalyst for transformation, for business transformation, because this is so much more than a disclosure and compliance exercise. “When you think about the mechanisms, the infrastructure, the data that will emerge from instituting more discipline and rigor around these disclosure objectives, (it) is absolutely critical to surface more timely where risk disruption can emerge. They give insight into choices that can be made.” Kristen Sullivan on Electric Ladies Podcast   The SEC released its final climate risk disclosure rules after a two year process of collecting thousands of public comments, hearing from investors and conducting analysis. These rules have the potential to be transformative because they require companies to disclose verified data about the climate impact on their bottom line, and on how their company affects climate change risk as well. What does it mean? Listen to Kristen Sullivan, Deloitte Audit Partner, who leads the firm's sustainability practice, and Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson as they decipher these new rules – and the opportunities they reveal. You'll hear: What the SEC is asking companies to disclose verified data on, and why. How companies could benefit from identifying this data and seeing its impact on their business. Where this climate disclosure data might reveal opportunities that could be transformative for them. How to prepare, when to start (now), and how to structure your preparation. Plus, insightful career advice “Whether you're a marketing leader, whether you're a talent leader, a human resources leader, supply chain, finance, investor relations, legal, pick your favorite area of the business, really introducing a climate lens to what you do in your day job and really becoming a champion across your part of the organization. The US Securities and Exchange Commission on March 6 finalized a long-awaited rule requiring thousands of publicly traded companies to disclose certain climate-related information. The final rule takes a narrower approach than what the SEC proposed in 2022; it also marks a significant change in the level of climate-related information that publicly listed companies must disclose in the US. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we explore key components of the SEC rule and its implications for investors and companies — as well as how it fits in the broader global climate disclosure landscape.  We talk with Cynthia Hanawalt, a Director at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, a think tank at Columbia Law School; she gives us an overview of the rule's requirements.   We speak to Bruno Sarda from professional services company EY, where he focuses on climate change and sustainability services. Bruno says a key message from the rule is that “climate risk is financial risk ... companies need to be ready to both measure, manage and communicate that risk."  We hear from Kristina Wyatt, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Sustainability Officer at carbon accounting software company Persefoni, about how the rule fits into the broader global disclosure landscape.   And to understand what's on the horizon for the rule, we hear from Elizabeth Dawson, a Partner at law firm Crowell & Moring where she is a leader on the ESG advisory team and Chair of the Sustainability Committee.  Read research from S&P Global Sustainable1 about the current US landscape for corporate climate disclosure: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/insights/featured/special-editorial/after-sec-rulemaking-assessing-the-us-climate-disclosure-landscape   Listen to the podcast episode we released when the SEC proposed its climate disclosure rule in 2022: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/unpacking-implications-of-the-sec-s-proposed-climate-disclosure-rule   This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global.     Copyright ©2024 by S&P Global     DISCLAIMER     By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. Many of the objections raised in public comments revolve around so-called Scope 3 emissions that are not directly produced by companies and instead result from what occurs “upstream” and “downstream” of a company's activities. That's a problem because if the SEC rule is finalized the commission would effectively extend its jurisdiction to include private companies that transact business with public firms registered with the SEC. The SEC estimates that it will cost anywhere from $460,000 to $640,000 for companies to comply with the new rules during the first year they are in operation. Given the complexity involved in tracking Scope 3 emissions, it's not too difficult to imagine how Persefoni stands to benefit financially from software and accounting services specifically tailored for this purpose. In fact, that appears to have been the plan right from the get-go. Influence Watch describes how the accounting firm and environmental activists joined forces to have substantial input on the disclosure rules. Moreover, Persefoni is prominently mentioned throughout the SEC proposal. But it's not just carbon accountants who stand to benefit at the expense of companies that fall within the purview of the SEC. Dan Kish, a senior fellow at the Institute for Energy Research, a Washington-based nonprofit, sees a potential “big payday for law firms” attached to the SEC's supply chain reporting mandates. “This is all about expanding the size and scope of government,” he said in an interview. “Lawyers can get involved with a class action lawsuit and they'll say this particular company didn't properly report their emissions. You can expect the lawyers to take a huge chunk from these suits. This gets into very gray areas about how a company can be expected to account for every single item along the supply chain.” Kish continued: “You'll have lawyers intervening supposedly to protect the public interest, but they'll be raking in all kinds of cash. The process doesn't stop here since the law firms will then dump campaign contributions into the coffers of the people pushing these policies.” Source: dailycaller.com https://twitter.com/WallStreetSilv/status/1746099010845225106?s=20 https://twitter.com/WallStreetSilv/status/1746440066543542625?s=20 https://twitter.

The twelfth episode in this series focuses on “Climate Disclosure Rules: Preparing For Regulatory Oversight,” with Kristina Wyatt, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Sustainability Officer at Persefoni, and Neil Stewart, Director of Corporate Outreach at the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). The discussion was led by Jackie Liu. This year witnessed an unprecedented increase in climate disclosure rules – mandatory and voluntary. The regulations and standards follow increased demands for standardization and reliance on climate-related disclosures by stakeholders, including investors and consumers. As regulations such as California's Climate Accountability (CCA) package proliferate and the industry coalesces around voluntary standards such as the ISSB's IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 standards, the importance of preparing and positioning for alignment is apparent. The discussion will provide a comprehensive overview of climate disclosure regulations in the U.S. and EU, specifically the EU's CSRD, CCA, and the ISSB Standards, along with insights on what is on the horizon and how companies can sufficiently prepare for reporting requirements in this everchanging landscape.

“Much of our infrastructure isn't built to withstand certain kinds of flooding or certain levels of heat. And yet, as the climate changes, so many of the things… that we did know in a world with a stable climate, those are now being upended. And all of that affects costs fundamentally… So, we need to transition to net zero…The three pieces of (federal) legislation are all about investing in America and making sure that from the innovation to commercialization pipeline, we are helping those goods get to market at scale, at prices consumers can afford.” Heather Boushey on Electric Ladies Podcast Climate change affects the entire economy, especially our infrastructure, like transportation, energy and electric power systems, buildings, manufacturing, etc. and every one of us, from consumers to businesses to investors, to education etc. Every sector, every community, every income bracket. NOAA calculated it's already caused almost $3 trillion in damages. The Biden administration signed three massive bills into law with Congress's help that address this pivot to a net zero economy and upgrading our infrastructure. Listen to Heather Boushey, Member of the White House Council of Economic Advisors and Chief Economist of the Invest in America Cabinet, in this exclusive and rare interview by Joan Michelson on Electric Ladies Podcast explain how we can economically do this transition and how this federal funding reduces our risks and costs to do, while also expediting this transition to help avert even far worse effects of climate change.  You'll hear: How climate change affects the economy, and key sectors specifically. Resources in the Inflation Reduction  Act, Infrastructure Investment Act & CHIPS & Science Act to help homeowners, businesses and investors make these changes at reduced risks and lower costs. Where the opportunities – and jobs – are in this transition, including for women. The impact on women specifically and resources available Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “For me, the key to my career was being clear on what my mission is….I feel so enormously fortunate that I found a president to be able to work for who shares that goal….So I think the lesson in that is either be the leader that you want to believe in, or find that leader and attach yourself to them and see what amazing things you can do together. But, for me, it's been about being clear on what it is that I wanted to achieve.” Heather Boushey on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. “What I'm hearing is, how do we go faster? How do we transform the key industries that are driving emissions now? And, that can be the solutions to our climate crisis, to our biodiversity crisis. They're really seeking what are the strategies, where should they be going strategically to shift capital, to shift their operations?...I'm seeing is a great eagerness to learn to act, uh, far ahead of the global targets by governments. So working with companies, working with, uh, local and regional and state governments, um, working with innovators to large corporates. Uh, what I'm hearing is how do we go faster and how do we do it in a way that is truly credible?” Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast Climate change affects the entire economy – every sector – and therefore, any solution requires a multi-sector, multidimensional approach. But how do those work exactly in real life? What's working? Aimee Christensen, CEO of Christensen Global and Founder/CEO of the Sun Valley Forum, has been collaborating with top leaders across sectors in this work every day for 30 years, making the hard choices, running the numbers, identifying financial products and metrics. Listen to Aimee on Electric Ladies Podcast help us make sense of these strategies in this enlightening interview with host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear: How to build successful public-private partnerships. How to align financial assets with growing a climate positive economy. What impact new federal funding, ESG reporting and climate disclosure rules will have. What corporates are doing to transition to net zero operations and why. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Something that I've tried to do in my career that's been important has been to trust my gut and to be a truth teller….People are looking for community, so even if you think you might be the only one who's raising this issue,…you will find your people. And if you don't speak your truth, if you don't ask the hard question, you won't find the people who are looking to align with that aggressive leadership and trust your gut on that. So trust your gut, whether it's about a new job, about a direction we need to be going in, even if it feels a little bit lonely, because… You'll be proven. People will find you and want to collaborate with you.” Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. Investing In Companies For Social Impact - Meredith Shields, Citi Impact Fund “We have an allocated pool of capital that we are investing in early stage startups that are solving some of the world's most critical challenges. And…we care just as much about the financial success of the company as we do the impact that that company is going to make on the world. When I say impact… we think about that in two parts. One, who is running this company? Can we deploy more capital into diverse founders, meaning women, people of color, who have traditionally not received the investment capital that's warranted? And the other impact lens that we take is what we would define as ‘thematic impact,' which means, what social problems are we solving?...And again, we care about that just as much, if not more than the financial return.” Meredith Shields on Electric Ladies Podcast To solve the climate and equity crises, we need funders who are willing to back innovative – aka risky – ventures by people who come from different backgrounds with different perspectives. Some big companies are stepping up with venture funds and the like. One of them is Citi Impact Fund, which provides capital for early stage companies by a range of traditionally underserved founders whose companies are seeking to make a positive social impact. Listen to the head of that Fund, Meredith Shields, explain how they work and what they invest in – and much more – on Electric Ladies Podcast in this value-packed interview with host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear: How Citi Impact Fund defines “impact” – and how it fits in their focus. Tips for what to look for in investors for your entity – and why What impact she thinks the SEC's new climate risk disclosure rules mean. What makes up the best board of directors to maximize today's marketplace. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “My advice is to get really clear about what you're good at and what your functional skillset is, and what your managerial and or leadership skillset is. And then if you want to make a difference, think about where that's needed….As the world has changed and as this notion of impact has changed, there've become more opportunities to use my skillset in different ways, like many different ways that didn't exist previously. But I think you have to be open to that as a concept. And so just again, getting really clear on what are you good at and is that portable? And many, many things are in lots of different arenas.” Meredith Shields on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. “The impact investing we focused on, and tried to bring tools and resources together for, really represents areas of investing where you're looking for both a financial return and a social return through the investments that you make. So, it's really that simple. It's asking the question of, ‘is there some kind of social return that's exceptional or different in this investment versus the normal investments I would make?'…I like to remind everyone that every investment has impact. The question is what impact does it have?” Jean Case on Electric Ladies Podcast Impact and ESG (environment, social, governance) investing are often confused, and yet today, especially as the Securities and Exchange Commission finalizes its climate risk disclosure rules, the investment community is paying a lot more attention to the impact of investment decisions on the environment and all stakeholders. One of the people who has been at the forefront of using investment funding to make a positive impact is Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation, chair of the National Geographic Society board, author of the best-selling book, “Be Fearless,” and former SVP of AOL. Listen to Jean Case on Electric Ladies Podcast help us make sense of these strategies in this engaging interview with host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear: How she and the Case Foundation see the differences in impact investing vs. ESG investing. How ESG investing is really about minimizing risk as well as maximizing return, and why climate risk is financial. What impact she thinks the SEC's new climate risk disclosure rules will have. What the boards of directors of the future will do and how they will need to adapt structurally to a changing economy and marketplace Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Ladies, you need to own it….And by owning it, I mean, bring confidence that you've got what it takes. Own things that will make you a more profitable, build wealth for yourself, own that.…it's hard for a lot of us to do the things that we think we naturally can't be good at….(but) You can be trained, you can learn into almost anything. Last week, a few thousand sustainability professionals gathered for the annual GreenBiz conference hosted by GreenBiz Group. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we're on the ground talking with panelists and attendees about the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the space — from regulation, disclosure requirements and supply chains to environmental justice, employee wellbeing and burnout.   Many attendees expressed frustration and a general sense of being overwhelmed by the pace of change and the challenges facing the sustainability space. In the face of this uncertainty, the message from many panelists was: Whatever the topic, you have to start somewhere.   We hear from Kentaro Kawamori, CEO of climate software firm Persefoni, who urges companies to avoid “analysis paralysis.”  “You've just got to get started. And if you're searching for perfect, you're never going to find it,” Kentaro says.  We talk to Deloitte's Kristen Sullivan and Evan Harvey, who led a three-hour, standing-room-only climate disclosure bootcamp at the conference to help companies understand how proposed rules from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission could impact them.    “As we were wrapping up, we were trying to get a pulse on the audience in terms of... did this help you feel more prepared, this type of a session?” Kristen says. “The answer was ‘yes — and at the same time, I'm really scared.'”   We also speak to Yinka Bode-George, CEO of environmental justice-focused nonprofit Sustain our Future Foundation.   "People are getting the idea that environmental justice is not just this nice-to-have, it's actually a really central component of winning on the climate crisis and putting forward the most effective solutions," Yinka tells us.  In the episode, we also sit down with Tim Mohin, the former CEO of international standards organization the Global Reporting Initiative, or GRI; Nasdaq Global Head of ESG Solutions Randall Hopkins; UPS Sustainability Director Stakeholder Engagement Elba Pareja-Gallagher; Zack Parisa, CEO of forest carbon marketplace the Natural Capital Exchange, or NCX; and Jared Connors from supply chain sustainability management company Assent.  S&P Global Sustainable1 was a sponsor of the GreenBiz conference.  Listen to our episode on the SEC's climate disclosure rule here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/unpacking-implications-of-the-sec-s-proposed-climate-disclosure-rule  We'd love to hear from you. “On the supply side, we work with project developers who are standing up projects all around the world. Um, anything ranging from nature-based solutions to some of the more, uh, sort of frontier engineered technologies that you might have heard of, like direct air capture…and list their inventory on our platform to sell the carbon credits that they're generating through those projects. And then on the demand side, we work with corporations to enable the purchase of vetted carbon credits via our platform.” Lucy Hargreaves on Electric Ladies Podcast Managing carbon in the air is job one to keep the planet from heating over 1.5 degrees. There are many ways to do that, and the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report and many others, found that to do so, we need to both stop adding carbon emissions to the air and extract carbon from the air. This requires massive innovation and risk. One company thinks they can help expedite the process by creating a kind of “Airbnb for carbon credits.” Huh? You know, the climate, ESG, human rights issues, diversity, equity, inclusion, supply chain issues, cyber security, integrity of data, incentive plans, all of those, the future of good corporate governance, transparency, anti-corruption. All of those different issues that have been there for a long, long time, but been kind of like voluntary more and less, and suddenly they are really coming at the top of the agenda for the board of directors.” Helle Jorgenson on Electric Ladies Podcast When there's a scandal or a huge failure at a big company or a famous one – like the collapse of FTX Crypto Exchange – you hear questions like, “where was the board of directors?”  So, what is the role of the Board and how are environment, social and governance issues, including climate, diversity and covid, changing who is on them and why?   Listen to Helle Jorgenson, CEO and Founder of Competent Boards training programs for board members, and people who want to sit on boards, in this episode of Electric Ladies podcast in this valuable conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. They specialize in training on ESG issues, and, full disclosure, Joan is also now on their ESG faculty. You'll hear: What boards of directors actually do – and don't do How covid, climate and the resurgence of social justice movements are transforming boards, from who sits on them to what they do. How, when and why boards focus on ESG issues. How much they serve customers vs. serving investors. How to prepare to be a successful board member. Plus, insightful career advice. And much more! “If you look five years out, 10 years out, what is it that you want to look back at and say, Yes, I was part of this, or, or I did this…There's a ton of roles and…if you look at these 17 biggest pain points in the world (the 17 sustainable development goals)…and saying, Okay, where is it that I can make a difference? …I want to educate myself in this, so I can go out and help organizations, perhaps even the organization that you are working in right now.” Helle Jorgenson on Electric Ladies podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. “The climate urgency is urgent and climate risk is financial risk. And the SEC is all about the protection of investors and the financial markets. And if you have this looming financial risk, that's not being adequately addressed. …And, investors were saying, look, the information that we're getting just doesn't cut it. It's not sufficiently clear, consistent, comparable, reliable. We need more and we need the SEC to step in and provide clearer guidance, clearer rules to help ensure that investors are getting the information that they need.” Kristina Wyatt on Electric Ladies Podcast We see the wrath of climate change vividly today in the damage from Hurricanes Ian and Fiona -- which also reflects the financial risk and impact of climate change. That's why the Securities and Exchange Commission, the SEC, is finalizing its climate risk disclosure rules right now. How did they develop them? Today you'll find out. This episode of Electric Ladies podcast takes you literally into the SEC's room where those deliberations happened. Listen to Kristina Wyatt who literally led the SEC's Task Force developing these rules, explain how they did it and what happens next in this riveting conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. Kristina's formal title was Senior Counsel for Climate and ESG to the Director of the Division of Corporate Finance, and now she's SVP of Global Regulatory Climate Disclosure and Deputy General Counsel of Persefoni. You'll hear: How the SEC Task Force literally developed the proposed climate risk disclosure rules – and what happens next. Whose input they sought out to achieve their goals of serving investors and providing clarity. How to make sense of the different ESG-related standards Why this is a great time for a career with purpose Plus, insightful career advice. And much more! “What's happening now is that as this focus on climate….on diversity equity, and inclusion, all of these things are making their way up to the board. They're making their way to the C-suite, they're becoming central investor issues. They're financial issues…. What we need to have is these women who are sitting over in the CSOs office to make sure that they've got the chops on the financial piece, right? So, if you need to take courses, learn about how to read financial statements, get very familiar with your company's financials, understand balance sheets, understand income statements, understand cash flow statements and how they work so that you can really speak the financial talk and understand how your sustainability issues integrate with your financial issues.” Kristina Wyatt on Electric Ladies podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here.
