Amy "Rose" Phillips and Deanna "Betty White" Cheng kick off Friday chatting about a fly in the house and home-cooked “slop” dinners before reacting to a TMZ report that Brittany Cartwright filed a domestic violence temporary restraining order against Jax Taylor, alleging threats, physical attacks, property destruction, and seeking custody of their son Cruz. They note Hulu's The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives returns September 10, then dive into Real Housewives of Orange County frustrations: Vicki's tense energy and missing “woo-hoo,” her leaving a trip early, and questions about her return motives. They discuss the pool party that didn't feel like a pool party, “Carmela's” cheating boyfriend's awkward introduction, the “Betty White” comment, and Carmela's Oppenheim Group job helping Heather's daughter. They cover Heather's photo positioning, Shannon's finances (including Real for Real losses, $3,000 Uber spend, and dog Troy chewing $12,000 in shoes), Heather allegedly calling Carmela trashy, and Emily and Shane's marriage tension, which they believe will be fine. This episode is sponsored by:OAK ESSENTIALS Luminous Body Lotionhttps://oakessentials.comBUBS NATURALS COLLAGEN AND PEPTIDESLive Better Longer with BUBS Naturals. In this episode, we continue our deep dive into Ezra Booth's anti-Mormon letters from October 1831, examining how this early apostate mounted his attack against our fledgling church. What fascinates us most is that Booth personally witnessed miracles, including Elsa Johnson's arm being healed, yet later dismissed such spiritual experiences as delusion or deliberate fraud.  We highlight striking logical contradictions in his arguments: he claims only Joseph saw angels, then attacks witness testimonies about seeing them. His scattershot approach, depicting believers as liars, crazy, or stupid, mirrors modern anti-Mormon rhetoric perfectly. Ironically, Booth himself confirms early church members used "Melchizedek priesthood" language and testified of spiritual experiences, undermining later revisionist claims these were later developments. In Episode 7 of this series, Patrick begins by responding to recent listener feedback. He documents the many ways that post Mormons believe in conspiracy theories! Or better stated—collaborations or “constructed experiences” in early Mormon history. Patrick then responds to claims that stylometry is “junk science”. He compares this claim to early claims that DNA population studies and the Book of Mormon peoples were labeled in the same way. He demonstrates many cases of unknown authorship of a text being solved by stylometry. Further, he demonstrates how stylometry, well done, meets the high bar of being admitted as evidence in court cases. He walks through several examples of cases where stylometry was allowed as expert or scientific testimony. Patrick then announces that Rebecca discovered a 9th wordprint study! One that was just published in the past few weeks. Unfortunately, the study did not test the narrative and sermon text separately—a key to testing the multiple authors theories. More to come as we attempt to contact the author of the study for more information. The rest of this episode focuses on setting the stage for evaluating textual clues in the Book of Mormon. Which clues go beyond demonstrating 19th century authorship and tie uniquely to Joseph or Rigdon? Off the bat, there are a couple of very interesting cases: the 7-point Mormon project of the Book of Mormon, and Joseph's role being limited to only dictation of the text and deferral to a “spokesman” for everything else. The remaining discussion evaluates further, the level of complexity in the Book of Mormon, so listeners can best evaluate the skill and amount of time the author would have needed to produce the text. Join us for a thoughtful look at the evidence behind one big question: who authored the Book of Mormon? What can Nauvoo land deeds actually tell us about Joseph Smith and the practice of plural marriage? In this episode of LDS Discussions, we take a close look at Nauvoo land records and examine claims that deeds issued to women –including women who were later identified as plural wives of Joseph Smith –provide evidence for Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy. The records are fascinating, but they are also considerably more complicated than they might appear at first glance. We examine the legal and historical context surrounding Nauvoo property, including the difference between a grantee and a recognized landowner, quitclaim deeds, coverture, widow's dower rights, property held in the  names of women and children, and the ways Joseph Smith and others used property arrangements to protect land from creditors and other legal complications. We also take a  closer look at individual cases involving Helen Mar Kimball, Sarah Ann Whitney, Flora Woodworth, Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner, Lydia Dibble Granger, Mercy Fielding Thompson, Philinda Myrick, Emma Smith, and others. Several of these women had connections to plural marriage, but that raises an important historical question: Does the existence of a deed help explain why a particular transaction happened, or does the deed itself provide evidence that polygamy was the reason for the transaction? Throughout the episode, we compare the deeds with tax records, William Clayton's journal, bankruptcy proceedings, and other contemporary evidence to see whether the names and dates appearing on the deeds accurately reflect who actually owned, occupied, controlled, or benefited from the property. One of the key conclusions is that you cannot simply take Nauvoo land deeds at face value. A plural marriage may sometimes provide a possible explanation for a property transaction, but the transaction itself does not necessarily prove that a plural marriage existed. This episode explores the complicated gap between what was legally recorded, what people were actually doing, and what later historians assume those records mean.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. Mormonism is changing and the version of it a Latter-day Saint holds today may look almost nothing like the version their parents held. I sat down with Aaron Shafovaloff and Brandi Bronson to map what's actually happening. Aaron has done evangelism in Utah for two decades and volunteers with Mormonism Research Ministry. Brandy was LDS for 27 years before leaving. Aaron lays out seven distinct streams within the movement today and Brandy describes the Mormonism she was raised in divine nature, eternal progression, creating worlds, and what made her start to question it. Note: Much of the content in this podcast can be found in show participant Ross Anderson's book Understanding the Book of MormonThe Book of Mormon claims to be an ancient scripture that tells the story of God's people in the American continent.LDS challenge: “Either the Book of Mormon is what the Prophet Joseph said it is, or this Church and its founder are false, a deception from the first instance onward…Joseph must be accepted either as a prophet of God or else as a charlatan of the first order…” (Jeffrey R. Holland, “Christ and the New Covenant,” quoted in Ensign, September 2002, 14)To accept BoM is to accept JS as a prophet, and everything that he stands for.The Book of Mormon claims can be / should be tested. 1 Thess 5:21 “Test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.”ArchaeologyBoM claims to be an ancient record of American continentFeaturing great cities, people at warArchaeology has failed to unearth any concrete evidence for BoMInscriptional evidence → names carved into stone monumentsExample: Sennacherib / Assyrians = names of Israel's kingsNo BoM name every foundMaterial remains → walls / foundations of ancient citiesPlenty of ancient cities in America, but none that can be linked to BoMExample: BoM describes its people using gold, silver, iron, brass, copperThe mining, smelting, and casting of metal ores requires special tools / complex processes which leave traces in the archaeological recordScholars generally agree: metallurgy not introduced into America until several centuries after the BoM story endsAnimals → BoM mentions many different kinds of animals: cattle, sheep, goats, horsesNone have been found in any archaeological setting dating to BoM timesUnlike deer, jaguar, peccary, tapir, other native speciesThe horse have never been found depicted in any of 1000s of sample of artNew world archaeology is still a young sciencePerhaps some day some artifact or inscription will be found to validate the BoMBut so far, best LDS apologists can do = create aura of plausibility based on vague similaritiesBy contrast, archaeology has repeatedly demonstrated the reliability of Bible: historically / geographicallyUse of metals as describe in Bible can be verified at many sitesA person can visit the actual cities where Bible describes Jesus or Paul travellingBritish Museum (London)Massive stone panels from ancient Ninevah → cities in Bible are recorded thereEvidence for the reliability of the Bible: “Three Reasons to Trust the Bible”DNATraditional LDS understanding - based on BoM story → native Americans are descended from ancient Jews who left Jerusalem for America around 600 BCThis is what JS taught → the most straightforward way to read the BoM textMainstream science → all native Americans are of Asian originSupported by extensive DNA sampling of American Indian populationsMany current LDS scholars claim that most NA's are of Asian descentWhile a small subset are of Semitic origin, descended from LehiIdea is = Nephite & Lamanite civilizations described in BoM made up a very small % of total population of New World during BoM timesLDS Church has acknowledged the challenges1981 BoM: identifies Lamanites as “the principle ancestors of the American Indians”2006 BoM: Lamanites “are among the ancestors of the American Indians”If BoM peoples were not alone in the Americas, it's very surprising that BoM never mentions these large populations of other peopleIn fact, no references to other peoples or nations, no accounts of Nephites evangelizing pagans, no polemics vs polytheism, idolatry, etc.LDS Church Gospel Topics Essay: Book of Mormon and DNA StudiesBible PlagiarismBoM contains extensive material in common with the BibleFirst type of shared content = simple repetition or direct quotationIncluding frequent phrases such as “it came to pass” and “verily, verily I say unto you”Second type = interpretive changes to a biblical text2 Nephi 2:18 expands on the biblical account of Eve's temptation (Gen 3:4-5)Third type = structural parallels to the BibleIncludes literary forms, common motifs, character types, etcConversion of Alma (Mos 27) has many features in common with Paul's conversion (Acts 9)Point: in many cases, Nephite writers mimic wording from the NTA doc to which they would have had no access. All of this shared content raises the Q: does common material come from independent sources?Or did JS simply copy from the Bible?Case 1 = the Sermon on the MountJesus appears in BoM - apparently in 40 days after resurrection prior to ascensionHis public address in 3 Nephi 12-14 contains much in common with Matt 5-7Case 2 = BoM contains more than 19 complete chapters in common w/IsaiahLehi's people carried a copy of OT scriptures with them → source of quoted materialSeveral lines of evidence suggest JS derived the Isaiah passages directly from KJV rather than an ancient sourceExample: biblical scholarship has advanced since KJV translationMany passages that were obscure in KJV in JS time are now more clearBut some of the misunderstandings found in the KJV are also found in BoMSuggests a direct relationship between KJV / BoMWould not have been present in BoM's quotes of Isaiah if the Isaiah text had originated in Lehi's time, as the story claimsHow would translation problems from KJV find their way into BoM?The extensive content shared between KJV & BoM - and the nature of the parallels - creates strong impression that BoM was produced AFTER the KJVOf course, LDS apologists have answers for all of these objectionsThe question is whether their answers are credibleFor loyal Mormons, the answers are convincing because they already have an existing commitment to the BoMOthers, without that grid, are not convinced that BoM passes the test--The Unveiling Mormonism podcast pulls back the curtain on Mormon history, culture and doctrine. What happens when you spend your life trying to find your way in a religion that never seems to have a space for you? Today, Mormon Stories welcomes Eli McCann, attorney, writer, podcaster, and humor columnist for The Salt Lake Tribune, to hear insights into his upbringing as a gay man in the LDS faith.Eli knew from a young age that he was gay, but understood that there would never be a place for him as an openly gay man in Mormonism. He served a mission, held leadership callings, and became deeply involved in the church while largely keeping his sexuality to himself. Eventually, after moving to Palau and serving as a Young Men's president, Eli reached a point where he could no longer reconcile his life with the church's teachings about homosexuality. He shares what led him to stop attending, come out to his family, and ultimately resign his membership—including the memorable experience of resigning with a Mormon bishop on top of a Book of Mormon. We also discuss the 2015 LGBTQ+ policy, his evolving views on faith, and why he has chosen to remain in Utah despite his complicated relationship with Mormonism.Eli is now known for finding humor in the quirks of Mormon culture through his writing for The Salt Lake Tribune. His new book, We're Thankful for the Moisture: A Gay Guy's Guide to Mormon Faith, Family, and Fruit Preservation, collects many of those stories and explores the intersections of Mormon culture, family, faith, and life as a gay man in Utah. This is a conversation about faith, family, sexuality, and learning to move forward without losing meaningful parts of your past. You can purchase Eli's new book here: https://www.signaturebooks.com/books/p/were-thankful-for-the-moisture___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. In Part One of this two-part story, Mackenzie and Hanna sit down with Courtney, whose journey from devout Mormon missionary to queer student at BYU leads her into an underground LGBTQ+ community, and into the orbit of its charismatic, chaotic leader. What begins as a story about coming out, leaving the church, and finding the people who finally make her feel understood quickly becomes a tangled web of love bombing, ex-fiancées, blurred boundaries, suspicious stories, and a relationship Courtney can never quite seem to escape. As Courtney and her friends turn their fight for acceptance into a movement, and begin raising money for a queer resource center, the stakes get much bigger, and the red flags become harder to ignore. In this engaging temple Q&A session, host Rick Bennett fields questions from a Community of Christ group following a presentation on restoration temples inside and outside the LDS Church. The discussion spans a wide range of captivating topics in Mormon history, theology, and architecture: https://youtu.be/vn7odpxo7Kc Don't miss our other conversations on temples: https://gospeltangents.com/mormon_history/lds-temples/ Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved What you will discover in this presentation: Temple Q&A: Mormon Pentecostalism & Speaking in Tongues The group discusses how early Latter-day Saints in Kirtland rolled on the ground like “holy rollers” and how Mormon Pentecostalism actually predates modern Pentecostalism by about 70 years. They examine how the Book of Mormon’s unique doctrinal connection between the baptism of fire and “speaking in the tongues of angels” laid this early groundwork. LDS Fundamentalism & Temple Practices: The discussion explores why fundamentalist Mormon offshoots (like the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the Neielson Naylor group) are often seen as having preserved original Nauvoo temple components more closely than the mainstream LDS Church has. Stonehenge as a Jaredite Temple?: In a fascinating segment on international restoration branches, Bennett shares the beliefs of Philip Gill’s group in England, which claims Stonehenge was actually built by Jaredites who traveled through Russia. The group also discusses temple traditions in Mexican and Brazilian restoration offshoots. Nemenha Records & Heavenly Mother: The Q&A highlights a highly obscure set of records from Manti, Utah, known as the “Mantino archives” or “Nemenha record” translated by Philip Landis. The records contain an entire temple endowment ceremony that is almost identical to the LDS ceremony, with one major twist: it refers to a Heavenly Mother. Where Does God Dwell?: Members debate whether physical structures or individual human bodies are the true temples. Drawing from the Book of Mormon’s teaching that the Lord “dwelleth not in unholy temples” but in the hearts of the righteous, they discuss the personal spiritual temple versus the physical buildings that eventually “get torn down”. Future of Kirtland & Salt Lake Temples: Bennett answers questions regarding the LDS Church’s purchase of the Kirtland Temple and the 15-year agreement to keep it as-is. He also expresses deep heartbreak over the seismic upgrades of the Salt Lake Temple, where historic pioneer murals were gutted so the structure could be placed on ball bearings and reinforced with steel rods. From a strict Mormon upbringing in Texas to the violent world of cartel-connected crime, Tyler's story is one of the wildest we've heard. In this episode, Tyler explains how he went from being a high school kid making money transporting drugs to working around human-smuggling networks along the Texas–Mexico border. He describes witnessing extreme cartel violence at a young age, moving migrants through border towns, becoming involved in violent contract work in Mexico, and later building a large drug business back home. Tyler also opens up about the side of that lifestyle people rarely talk about—the paranoia, emotional numbness, PTSD, memory problems, prison, and the difficulty of returning to a normal life after years surrounded by violence. We discuss: • Growing up in a strict Mormon household • Getting recruited into drug transportation as a teenager • Witnessing cartel violence for the first time • How human-smuggling networks operate along the border • Coyotes, safe houses, spotters, burner phones, and cartel organization • His descent into increasingly violent criminal work • Building a drug business through Snapchat • His 2019 arrest and prison sentence • The lasting psychological effects of the lifestyle • Therapy, family, faith, and trying to rebuild his life This conversation contains descriptions of violence, drug trafficking, and other criminal activity. It is presented for documentary, educational, and entertainment purposes and is not intended to promote or encourage illegal behavior. This Episode Is #Sponsored By The Following: BetterHelp! Allie interviews LaRell Herbert, who grew up in the Mormon church and experienced confusion regarding his gender from a young age. Everything he knew to be true was based on LDS doctrine, and when his belief in the “church” dissolved, the belief that he was simply a product of evolution took its place. When his worldview turned to the idea that he was a product of chance and not an intentional creation, the only thing that made sense with his conflicting feelings regarding his sexuality was that he was born in the wrong body. He expressed this heartbreaking information to his wife and began attending therapy with a nonbinary therapist who encouraged him to start receiving hormones and surgical treatment. LaRell went on to identify openly as a woman for seven years. His life changed, however, when he came to the realization that his feelings of being a woman were not something that he was born with but were rooted in childhood trauma. He now has a relationship with Jesus and accepts his true identity as a man made in the image of God. LaRell sits down with Allie to share his story as well as offer helpful insight for those who have loved ones walking through similar challenges. In June 1834, while marching with Zion's Camp through Illinois, Joseph Smith and his followers came across an ancient Native American burial mound. Members of the group dug into the mound and uncovered a human skeleton—with what appeared to be an arrowhead among its ribs. According to multiple members of Zion's Camp, Joseph Smith then received a vision revealing the identity of the dead man. His name was Zelph. He was described as a “white Lamanite,” a warrior and “man of God” who had fought under a great prophet named Onandagus. Wilford Woodruff recorded that Onandagus was known across a territory extending from “the hill Cumorah” to the Rocky Mountains and that Joseph received this information “in a vision.” But the story gets considerably more interesting when we dig deeper. In this episode of Mormonism Live, we examine the earliest surviving Zelph accounts from Wilford Woodruff, Reuben McBride, Levi Hancock, Heber C. Kimball, and others. What did these witnesses independently agree Joseph said? Which details appeared later? And how did the story change as it was edited into the official history of the Church? We also explore Joseph Smith's own remarkable letter written during Zion's Camp describing the group as wandering across the “plains of the Nephites,” examine the possible connections between Zelph, Cumorah, the Land of Desolation, and Book of Mormon geography, and look at what modern archaeology has discovered about the mound where the skeleton was reportedly found. Was Zelph simply an unusual nineteenth-century frontier story? Or did Joseph Smith make a specific prophetic claim about an actual ancient person—one that potentially tells us where Joseph believed Book of Mormon peoples lived? Zelph the White Lamanite: Digging Up Bones This is where archaeology, Mormon history, Book of Mormon geography, and Joseph Smith's prophetic claims collide.

I got a tour inside the San Diego Latter-day Saint temple and now I'm following up with an interview with Neal Walton who is a stake president in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Diego. Apparently, I was the first Christian apologist who'd ever shown up with a film crew and asked for an interview. We worked through the differences plainly. The Trinity. Whether God the Father has a physical body. Baptism for the dead. Faith and works. Exaltation versus salvation. Whether Jesus is the uncreated, eternal God. Neither of us pretended those are small, and neither of us tried to win. It's Thursday, August 20th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Vietnamese court sentences pastor to 7 years in prison A court in Vietnam sentenced a Protestant pastor to over seven years in prison this month. Fifty-nine-old-pastor Y Nuen Ayun had been leading unregistered religious activities since 2003. The communist government often uses fabricated charges to silence Christians.  International Christian Concern noted, “Despite these realities, the church in Vietnam continues to faithfully and boldly advance God's kingdom under oppression.” 1 Peter 4:14 says, “If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part, He is blasphemed, but on your part, He is glorified.” Send a polite, 3-sentence note to the Vietnamese Ambassador to America, Nguyen Quoc Dzung, urging him to ask his government to release 59-year-old-pastor Y Nuen Ayun. Address it to the Vietnam Embassy, 1233 20th Street Northwest #400, Washington, D.C., 20036. You can find the correct spelling of their names and the address of the embassy in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Animated “David” movie opens in United Kingdom & Ireland tomorrow The animated biblical film “David” is headed to theaters in the United Kingdom and Ireland tomorrow.  A campaign from the U.K.-based KOVA International is encouraging churches to engage their congregations and communities through the film. The movie has been one of Angel Studios'* most successful releases. *Note: Angel Studios is owned by the Mormons also known as the “Church” of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Worldview cautions our listeners to remember that Mormons teach a false gospel and an unbiblical worldview. So, please be discerning in the viewing of any Angel Studios productions. Canadian military chaplains prohibited from mentioning God in public Military chaplains in Canada can no longer mention God at public events. The country's government issued the new policy last month. Canada already prohibited chaplains from praying at public events. The Canadian Armed Forces claims to be maintaining religious and spiritual neutrality in the exercise of its public duties. But in Matthew 12:30, Jesus said, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” Trump pauses 50% tariffs on Canadian goods U.S. President Donald Trump paused 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods yesterday. The tariffs were set to go into effect today. The president said that the two countries had reached a deal, subject to the finalization of the documents.  Trump picked a pro-lifer to head the FDA President Donald Trump nominated Dr. Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration yesterday. She previously served as a White House health policy adviser. Dr. Overton is an opponent of abortion. She has written about the dangerous rise of chemical abortion which was allowed by the FDA in previous years. Christian Forest Service officer no longer required to work on Sundays A U.S. Forest Service officer will no longer be required to work on Sundays. Adam Diemert is a Forest Service law enforcement officer in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He is also a devout Presbyterian who attends church twice every Sunday. Adam submitted multiple religious accommodation requests to not work on Sundays. Sadly, the Forest Service denied those requests. But thanks to the legal help of First Liberty Institute, Adam finally received the accommodation last week.  Socialist Democrats score another primary victory Socialist Democrats picked up another primary victory on Tuesday. Socialist Angie Nixon defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, in Florida's Democrat primary race for the U.S. Senate.  Listen to the opening line of her victory speech. NIXON: “Florida, we did it!” (cheers and applause) She outlined her socialist agenda at the top. NIXON: “Medicare for all! (cheers) Universal childcare! (cheers) Real affordable housing!” (cheers) Nixon won easily with 56 percent of the vote. Vindman lost despite raising more than sixteen times as much money as Nixon.  Amazon delivery drones come to 500 cities Amazon delivery drones are coming to nearly 500 cities and towns this year. The company announced yesterday, “Prime Air offers millions of items by drone at everyday low prices, in as fast as 30 minutes.” The service currently operates in just 11 U.S. locations.  President Trump meets heroic lifeguard who saved 10-year-old And finally, President Donald Trump recently met with a heroic lifeguard as well as the 10-year-old boy he rescued. Sixteen-year-old Ryder Williams saved Nathaniel Rai from a rip current at a beach in Santa Cruz, California last month. A video of the rescue went viral, getting the president's attention. When asked by a reporter what went through his mind, the lifeguard said this. WILLIAMS: “In those dangerous moments that we have, we always try to fall back on our training. We are trained so well, by many, to handle that situation as best we can. So, I really am just thinking about how to get the boy out of the water as fast as I can.” He was also asked about his plans for the future. WILLIAMS: “I want to be a firefighter in the future. Hopefully, go through paramedic school.” Williams and Rai got to visit the White House on Monday. President Trump commended Williams and emphasized the providential moment. (Look at the 10:03-mark) Listen.  TRUMP: “He's a real hero. It's an amazing thing. God was watching you, right?” RAI: “Yeah.” TRUMP: “Great!” Proverbs 22:29 asks, “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings. He will not stand before unknown men.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, August 20th, in the year of our Lord 2026. In Episode 81 of the LDS Discussions series, we take a deep dive into the history of Mormon tithing –where the concept comes from, how it appears in the Bible and Book of Mormon, how Joseph Smith and the early Latter-day Saints understood it, and how the practice evolved into the modern LDS Church's system of financial requirements. We begin with the biblical origins of tithing, examining passages from the Old and New Testament and asking whether the biblical practice of tithing actually resembles the transactional model taught by the modern Church. We then turn to the Book of Mormon and explore what it says about priestcraft, wealth, and religious leaders receiving financial support. From there, we trace the history of tithing in early Mormonism, including Joseph Smith's financial requests, the 1838 tithing revelation, how early Saints actually contributed to the Church, and the significant differences between the original language surrounding consecration and the modern requirement to pay ten percent of one's income. We also examine the controversial history surrounding Green Flake and the claim that an enslaved man was donated as tithing, the financial relationship between Brigham Young and the Church, and what the surviving historical records can –and cannot –tell us about the practice of tithing and labor tithes in early Utah. Finally, we look at the development of modern LDS tithing requirements, including when tithing became a requirement for temple recommends, the distinction between tithing and fast offerings, teachings about self-reliance, changes to tithing slips, and the Church's long-standing lack of financial transparency to its membership. If you value episodes like this one, we ask that you show your support by donating to Mormon Stories Podcast! ___________________Show NotesYouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. Today we sit down with Coy Johnston, a longtime active member of the LDS Church, to explore what it looks like to question Mormonism without completely walking away.Coy grew up in Mesa, Arizona, served a mission in England, became a doctor, and spent his life deeply involved in the church. His faith began to shift as he studied scripture and biblical scholarship, and issues with early Mormon church history. He shares how learning more about church history changed his understanding of Mormonism and led him into a faith crisis that affected his family, callings, and relationship with church leaders.Rather than leaving, Coy began looking for ways to support other members who were going through similar struggles. He created a group called “Journeys,” where people could openly discuss their questions and doubts. When church leaders learned about the meetings, they asked him to stop holding them and eventually threatened to withhold his temple recommend if he did not dissolve the group.Other topics include:-Perfectionism and worthiness-Mormon history and biblical scholarship-Mixed-faith marriage-Bishop roulette-Supporting members with faith questionsHis story raises an important question: Can you remain Mormon while admitting you don't have all the answers?Show NotesYouTubeMormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors!Help us continue to deliver quality content by becoming a donor today:One-time or recurring donation through DonorboxSupport us on PatreonPayPalVenmoOur Platforms:YouTubePatreonSpotifyApple PodcastsContact us:MormonStories@gmail.comPO Box 171085, Salt Lake City, UT 84117Social Media:Insta: @mormstoriesTikTok: @mormonstoriespodcastJoin the Discord
