Many of us who follow aerospace and defence pay a lot of attention to the war in Ukraine, and particularly new tactics and capabilities. Our episode today is an effort to discuss the transformation that the Ukrainian Air Force is making from former Soviet Union or Russian aircraft to western fighter aircraft.Ukraine has been defending themselves against Russian forces since they invaded Crimea in 2014, and then re-attacked in early 2022.At the start of the war Ukraine had around 125 warplanes. Reports indicate that have lost around 80 jets, but numbers of aircraft have been bolstered by the donation of similar types of aircraft from some of the former Soviet states. There is no doubt that Ukrainian pilots have performed heroically against overwhelming odds. With that said, the Ukrainian Air Force has faced significant challenges with aging fleets of aircraft and sustainment issues which make their fleets increasingly difficult to field.Ukraine has therefore spent many months lobbying for western combat aircraft, especially F-16's, which they believe will help them better defend their country.A number of countries like Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands and Norway, have pledged F-16s to Ukraine; and Ukrainian Air Force pilots have been training in a number of countries to get proficient on flying the western jet, with Denmark being one of those countries. For this episode, I thought it would be informative to get a sense of what Ukrainian pilots are experiencing as they transition to a new platform like the F-16.To do this I am pleased to introduce a wonderful friend to me and to this podcast, fighter pilot Nick Graham, who flew the Tornado F3 and the Eurofighter Typhoon in the Royal Air Force (RAF), and also the F-16 when on exchange in Denmark.I've asked Nick to participate in this chat because his experience of learning to fly the F-16 in Denmark provides excellent insight on what Ukrainian pilots are experiencing as they shift from MiG and Sukhoi aircraft to the F-16.I am very thankful to Nick for taking the time to share his professional fighter pilot experience, and his insight and perspectives on this topic. We wish Ukraine success in their fight to defend their country!Go Bold!

NICK'S BIO Between growing up in a northern England rural town to leading global insights and analytics for one of the most successful consumer products companies in the world – a lot happens. This is the case for Nick Graham, a remarkable student of human behavior, societal trends and consumer taste. Nick studied History & French at Oxford University which somehow led him to start a career in the world of marketing, first as an advertising planner at GCI Media then InterPublic Group, pivoting later to brand & innovation strategy at Clear, the M&C Saatchi's strategy division. That foundation led him to spend almost 10 years at PepsiCo where he led insights and analytics for the company's global beverages business followed by running insights & analytics for the US business unit of the consumer products giant. He oversaw the reinvention and redesign of the Pepsi brand as well as the company's strategic shift to new categories like sparkling water (Bubly with $100 million in 1st year sales), energy drinks (Rockstar), protein/sports drinks (Muscle Milk), coffee & tea (Starbucks partnership). He is currently Senior Vice President and Global Head of Insights & Analytics at Mondelez International (“Snacking Made Right”). The company's brands include Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Clif Bar,  Wheat Thins, Cadbury, Milka and Ritz Crackers. His focus, a big one:  transforming the function, integrating data science, AI and behavioral economics to help the business understand the shifts the company needs to make to meet future consumer demand.  We talk about marketing, brands, human behavior, innovation, artificial intelligence and the fact that humans innately try to achieve balance in life - including the spectrum of what we consume to nourish ourselves. There is a place for kale salads and probiotics as well as the indulgence and satisfaction that comes with opening an Oreo cookie, licking the frosty cream and chomping on the chocolaty cookie goodness - a source of much debate around the world. This episode is in collaboration with QUAL360 North America.  Our guest today is Nick Graham, the Global Head of Insights & Analytics at Mondelēz.  Mondelez traces its roots to the National Dairy Corporation, which was founded in 1923.  One year later, the Kraft Cheese Company was founded and listed on the New York Stock Exchange.  In 1930, National Dairy was acquired by Kraft.  Fast forward to September 7, 2009, Kraft made a hostile takeover bid for the British company, Cadbury, makers of Dairy Milk and Bournville chocolate. This bid was eventually successful.  In August of 2011, Kraft Foods announced plans to split into two publicly traded companies, an international snack-food company and a North American grocery company. The snack-food company, called Mondelez, would be the legal successor of the old Kraft Foods, while the grocery company would be a new entity known as the Kraft Foods Group. The split was completed in October 2012. It was structured so that Kraft Foods changed its name to Mondelez and spun off Kraft Foods Group as a new publicly traded company. Today, Mondelēz, is an American multinational candy, food, beverage, and snack food company based in Chicago, Illinois. Mondelez has an annual revenue of about $26 billion and operates in approximately 160 countries.
