Episode #206: La Cantina de San Angel Live Dining Review, Kind of!!!

Looking for honest Disney dining advice? We're cutting through the magic to tell you what La Cantina de San Angel in Epcot's Mexico Pavilion is really like. After battling World Showcase crowds for a table (while a medical emergency unfolded nearby), we put this quick-service spot to the test. Our dining adventure quickly turned complicated when promised customizations created confusion among staff. Despite assurances that modifications were no problem, our simple requests resulted in deconstructed meals – cheese served in cups rather than on tacos, and chicken delivered separately from nachos. The $15.75 Aros bowl with breaded shrimp offered generous portions but questionable value, while the $16.50 Tacos de Barbacoa disappointed with dry meat that couldn't compete with Chipotle's juicier version. Nolan's $15.50 nachos earned the tepid review of being "just all right" – hardly the enthusiastic endorsement you want when spending Disney prices. The verdict? Skip La Cantina and opt for either San Angel Inn (the sit-down restaurant inside the Mexico Pavilion) or head to Connections Eatery for better quick-service value. We're already eyeing China Pavilion for our next Epcot dining adventure. Whether you're planning your first Disney vacation or your fiftieth, our candid reviews help you maximize both dining credits and out-of-pocket spending. Have you tried La Cantina? We'd love to hear if your experience matched ours or if we caught them on an off day!Send us a textSupport the show

We also hear from a listener about wanting to work in the kids activities area, either in the parks or the resorts. With Walt Disney World not doing full blown Overlays as Disneyland does with the Haunted Mansion, it's fun to look at what could be. We'll hear from Stephen first with his idea to lightly add Christmas touches to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. Kaity will then talk about adding Coco to the Three Caballeros attraction in Epcot's Mexico Pavilion before talking about a fun idea of adding the holidays to Expedition Everest. Bryan then provides his idea of the Muppets Christmas Carol taking over Remy's Ratatouille Adventure and providing it from the point of view of Rizzo the Rat. This kicks off a conversation about the state of the Muppets. We even get into Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and Captain EO before getting back to Overlays. We'll consider the Simpson's taking over Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Muppet's Treasurer Island Overlaid on Pirates of the Caribbean. Before our last conversation about holiday music played by Sonny Eclipse at Cosmic Ray's, we have a fun conversation about Alien Extra-terror-estrial and a scary Stitch. You can find the Idiot's Guide to Imagineering on Instagram ‎@IdiotsImagineering  I appreciate them joining me this week! Make sure you hit that subscribe button so you know when there are new episodes. Gran Fiesta Tour Starring, The Three Caballeros, is housed within the pyramid-shaped Mexico Pavilion at Walt Disney World's Epcot. The attraction opened in April 2007, replacing the El Rio Del Tiempo attraction, becoming the first World Showcase attraction to feature Disney characters! The Three Caballeros from the 1944 Disney Film of the same name. Like every Disney attraction, the grand fiesta tour has a story. As we make our way to the rear of the Mexico pavilion, the attraction begins with concert posters. It appears that we are just in time for a three caballeros' performance tonight!!! We board our boat for a scenic ride around a Mayan pyramid with an active volcano in the distance. The boat passes by the main dining area for the San Angel inn Restaurante. A node to Disneyland's Blue Byou restaurant and the Pirates of the Caribbean. As we make our way down the opening tunnel, we See Panchito and Jose introducing themselves, only to realize that Donald Duck is Missing?! Dónde Está Donald Duck? The search for Donal sends us on our journey through Mexico, we need to find Donald in time for the concert. The journey takes us through multiple scenes of live-action footage combined with the animated Caballeros searching for Donald. They eventually find him dancing to a mariachi band with locals; Panchito and Jose pull Donald away just in time for the concert in Mexico City, complete with Fireworks. From the attractions opening until late 2015, the performance was a projected cartoon. In late 2015 the concert scene of the attraction was updated to include the Three Caballeros animatronics from the Mickey Mouse Revue. Mickey Mouse Revue was an opening day Walt Disney World attraction, making the animatronics 50 years old. This video includes the concert scene with both the Animated and animatronic versions. http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Let's head to Epcot to bid a fond farewell to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth!  Recorded on August 17, 2019. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. It is time for Attraction Checklist to visit EPCOT in Walt Disney World and bid a fond farewell to the nighttime spectacular knows as IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.  Before IllumiNations ended, the guide map described the show by saying: The World Showcase Promenade comes alive nightly with the brilliance and splendor of music, lights, lasers, water fountains and custom pyrotechnics in our signature nighttime spectacular, IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.  Since this was a show there were no height or age requirements and FastPass+ was available. Before we gather around the fire one last time, here are 5 fast facts about IllumiNations. 1.  IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth debate at EPCOT in Walt Disney World on September 22, 1999.  This show was a revamped version of the previous IllumiNations shows that was created for the year 2000 Millennium celebration.  When it debuted it was called IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth.  The show proved to be so popular that after the Millennium Celebration ended, the show continued, dropping the 2000 from its official name. 2.  To drive the Millennium Celebration theme home, World Showcase Lagoon was surrounded by 19 torches representing the first 19 centuries of the common era.  At the end of the show, the iconic globe opened and revealed a 20th torch for the 20th century. 3. The show’s signature globe was over 3 stories high and was the world’s first spherical video display system. 4.  The control booth for the show is located above the Mexico Pavilion in World Showcase.  The show uses more than 65 computers scattered around the park on 40 separate locations. 5. On April 9, 2019, the Disney Park Blog announced that after 20 years, IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth would close to make way for new shows.  The show had its final performance on September 30, 2019. Now it’s time to blow out the torches one last time.  I’ll give you my thoughts after the show audio.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we enjoy, for the last time, EPCOT’S IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth! http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Let's celebrate the sights and sounds of Mexico as John B. deHaas and I take a ride on the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros at EPCOT in Walt Disney World.  Ride Audio Recorded on October 27, 2016. Today we head to EPCOT to experience the signature attraction of the Mexico Pavilion in World Showcase, the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the There Caballeros! The guide map describes this ride by saying, “Discover the sights of Mexico and the antics of three feathered amigos on this boat ride.”  There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the Thrill Level simply describes this ride as a Slow Ride. Before we go out and search for Donald Duck with Jose and Panchito, here are five fast facts about this attraction! 1.  The Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros opened on April 6, 2007, replacing the Mexico Pavilion’s original attraction El Rio del Tiempo.  The Gran Fiesta Tour keeps the same layout as the original ride but adds animated film sequences starring The Three Caballeros. 2.   The addition of The Three Caballeros to the ride marked the first time that Disney made the, somewhat controversial decision, to add pre-existing characters into attractions in the World Showcase at EPCOT.  A decision that has continued with Frozen Ever After in the Norway pavilion. 3. The voices of the Three Caballeros are performed by Tony Anselmo as Donald, Rob Paulson as José and Carlos Alazraqui as Panchito. 4.  The center section of the attraction, known as the Festival of Children, features animatronics of singing and dancing children very reminiscent of It’s A Small World.  This portion of the Gran Fiesta Tour is pretty much the same as it was back when the ride was known as El Rio del Tiempo. 5. On December 15, 2015, animatronics of the Three Caballeros were installed in the show’s finale.  The animatronics were reused from the Magic Kingdom attraction the Mickey Mouse Revue which was closed to make way for Mickey’s PhilharMagic in Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland. Now it’s time to ride the Gran Fiesta Tour.  Along for the ride is John B. deHaas and after we ride we will give you our thoughts on this attraction.  Also, this is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones put them on now as we head to EPCOT’S Mexico Pavilion to ride the Gran Fiesta Tour starring The Three Caballeros. Annie and Dan are joined by Jake from the famous Mickey Mutineers Podcast to break down the insanity that is the 1944 Disney Animation Classic, The Three Caballeros. The movie features Donald Duck, who appears to be visited by a possessed film projector that takes him into an existential, and surreal, journey into the culture of South and Central America. There's also something called The Aracuan, which is either a witch or a demon.  The film is the inspiration of The Gran Fiesta Tour at the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot, so it has that going for it.  It also may be Jake's favorite movie, by the way he talks about it, which could explain some things.

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED))) In this episode of the Mouse Lounge, we hop into our DC-3 and head south of the border. Also, a full docket of Disney News from departments Entertainment, Theme Parks East, Theme Parks West, and Business. From the Walt Disney Family Museum: Listen as Walt describes the sights and sounds of the lands in Latin America. Excerpted from Walt Disney -- The Triumph of American Imagination: By 1940, the Walt Disney Studio had moved from Hyperion Avenue to the new Burbank studio still used today. The financial windfall of Snow White was now a distant memory and Walt had two financial failures on his hands, Fantasia and Pinocchio. The studio had been overrun by union organizers and production on Bambi was slowed to a crawl. Those crossing the picket line were working on Dumbo, fronted as a picture they could just knock out quickly. While the lawyers were settling with striking workers in 1941, Walt needed to get away and find other projects. He found it in a working trip to South America. Learn about what prompted this material gathering tour of South America and the two unusual movies that resulted from it. Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. This week a very special mix from three films featuring Donald and Joe Carioca. From 1944s, The Three Caballeros we meet Ya Ya selling cookies (and a little more) in the brilliant Baia sequence from the film. Also from 1944 on Decca Records A-373 Charles Wolcott and his Orchestra perform the title track, sung by Ray Gilbert. Then, from 1948s Melody Time and 1943s Saludos Amigos, Joe gives Donald a lesson in the Rhythm of the Samba! Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week, from the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot we have a listen to Mariachi Cobre and take a ride on El Rio del Tiempo. We close the show with a trio of interpretations of Tico Tico, from the Andrews Sisters, the Charles Wolcott Orchestra, and Don Swan and his Orchestra Enjoy!
