Presidential Candidate Catherine Connolly joined Jerry as she continues her canvasing across the country. She visited Maddens Café in Tralee and Halla na Feothanaí, in Moorestown, Dingle.

We began this week by exploring the chaos which had been unleased in Tuam, as nearly 100 families have been impacted by the foreclosure of the Happily Ever After creche.  The childcare facility cannot continue to function as the owner's, Tuam Parish, have been hit with a bill of over 1 million euro if they decide to proceed with renovations of the building.  A lot of families have been left in the lurch, and do not know where to turn as there are no places available in any of the crèches in the Tuam hinterland or further afield.  It's may result in job losses and hard decisions for families who are scrambling to find alternative arrangements with family or further afield.  I went out to Tuam last Saturday and spoke to a number of the families affected by this, as well as the Minister locally, Seán Canney. What is pyschosis and is there stigma surrounding the condition? We explored this subject in an open and honest way with Renmore man Conor Gavin. "You're not a psychopath, you just experienced an episode of pyschosis"  At just 16, Conor experienced his first psychotic episode and now, he's the Co-Ordinator of Ireland's new Psychosis Research Centre and founder of the Psychosis Arts Collective.  Drawing on his lived experience, he is using his voice to drive change, challenge stigma, and show that recovery from psychosis is possible. He spoke to Galway Talks about the advice the psychiatrist gave him after his first episode.   It was a big week in the presidential election campaign as polling approaches on the 24th of October.  Both candidates were on the programme with us this week.  We started by interviewing independent candidate Catherine Connolly, discussing a number of issues from the campaign and some of key local issues here in Galway, including the likes of the mother and baby homes scandal the ring road in Galway and a question from one of our T.Y media week students.  We also spoke to the Fine Gael candidate and former minister, Heather Humphreys, asking questions on repeating the seal on the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes, her offices and more.  Make sure to exercise your democratic rights and get to the polling booth on Friday next. After weeks of speculation, Sinn Féin yesterday decided not to run a party candidate in the Presidential election, instead putting their support behind Catherine Connolly. Matt Carthy TD explains the decision.

Yesterday, Kerry County Councillors met 14 potential presidential candidates at Áras an Chontae who are seeking a nomination from the council that could allow one of them appear on the ballot paper in next month’s election. Amber Galwey reported on the event from County Buildings. Jerry also spoke to Fianna Fáil councillor Tommy Cahill.

Kerry County Council will today hold the first of a nationwide series of Presidential candidate consultation meetings as the local authority route for securing a nomination narrows. Our reporter Josh Crosbie is in Kerry,,,Newstalk's political correspondent Sean Defoe joined Jonathan Healy on the show.

On Tuesday Fianna Fail will select its candidate to enter the presidential election. And tomorrow 12 hopefuls will address Kerry County Council seeking a nomination for the presidency. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Fine Gael Councillor Michael Foley joined us to shed light on the nominating process and his party's strategy.

Cynthia McKinney has made a career of speaking her mind and challenging authority. With her opinions, actions, and even her sense of style, McKinney has inspired both admiration and controversy. McKinney´s political career began unofficially in 1986 when her father, Georgia State Representative Billy McKinney, put her name on the ballot as a write-in. Cynthia McKinney was living in Jamaica at the time and did not take the matter seriously; still, she garnered a large percentage of votes without even trying. Two years later, McKinney ran for and won the seat, creating the first father/daughter combination to serve together in the Georgia State House of Representatives. Cynthia immediately began making her own mark, defying House dress codes for women by wearing trousers instead of dresses. She spoke out against the first Persian Gulf War, and despite being in the House with her father, she often disagreed and voted against him. In 1992, McKinney won a seat in the US House of Representatives in Georgia´s newly created 11th district. She was the first African-American woman to represent Georgia in the US Congress. McKinney became Secretary of her Democratic freshman class and was placed on both the Agricultural Committee and the International Relations Committee. Her gold tennis shoes and braided hairstyle became her trademarks, and effectively raised her profile on a House floor dominated by white men. Though a Democrat during President Clinton's tenure, McKinney voted against NAFTA, showing that she was not one to simply follow the Party line. McKinney worked hard in Washington to clean up pollution in her district and improve its rural roads. During her second term, McKinney earned distinctive committee assignments with the National Security Committee and the International Relations Committee's International Operations and Human Rights Subcommittee. A supporter of a Palestinian State in Israel-occupied territory, she sparked controversy by criticizing American policy in the Middle East. After the 9/11 attacks, McKinney suggested the President might have had prior knowledge of 9/11. The criticism she received from this highly controversial idea probably contributed to her defeat in the 2002 election; however, she ran for the seat again and was re-elected in 2004. Between terms in office, McKinney traveled the country and Europe, speaking against the war in Iraq war and also about her 2002 defeat, which she attributed to Republicans being organized to “cross over” to vote against her in the Democratic primaries. Her career, including this episode of her defeat, was made into a documentary film titled American Blackout. Once back in office, she continued her criticism of the Bush administration on the first anniversary of the 9/11 Commission Report by gathering victims' families and intelligence experts together on panels to address the flaws in the report and critique its recommendations regarding foreign and domestic policy. Believing the government should not keep secrets from the people, McKinney introduced legislation to release the documents related to the death of Tupac Shakur and twice submitted a bill to release the sealed documents pertaining to Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. McKinney was very active in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and a vocal critic of the government's response. When Democratic Party leaders encouraged a boycott of a Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate the Preparation for and Response to Hurricane Katrina, she chose to participate and submitted her own report on the matter.
