Priced out: Tenants threaten rent strike as housing crisis worsens

Filling the Sink

This Saturday November 23 the Tenant's Union accompanied by dozens of housing activism organizations have planned a protest in Barcelona to demand a significant reduction in rents. We discuss the housing crisis, analyze the reasons behind rising prices and find out how tenants are fighting back. Host Beth Cohen is joined by Catalan News journalist Cillian Shields to explore how the housing situation has evolved in recent years. Cillian talks to tenants about the difficulties of renting in Barcelona, the increasingly unfavorable contracts offered by landlords and the saturated housing market. Beth investigates the rent cap law, finds out what a ‘tense housing zone' is and discovers how landlords are using legal loopholes to continue to charge prices which reflect market demand. We interview some of the key figures involved in Saturday's protest, including Carme Arcarazo, the spokesperson for the Tenants´ Union, and Judit Esposa, a representative of a housing union in the Barcelona neighborhood of Gràcia. They clarify what the protest hopes to achieve, while experts question the viability of a rent strike. Filling the Sink also reveals how locals are being priced out of their neighborhoods, as tourism and luxury real estate put pressure on rental prices. For those who do want to stay, compromise comes in the form of a flat share or moving back into the family home, neither of which are desirable options for working adults. This week's Catalan phrase is “Començar la casa per la teulada” - to start the house with the roof. It means to do things in the wrong order and is the equivalent of the English saying “To put the cart before the horse.”

At the beginning of May, advocacy group Students for Fair Rent, launched a ‘rent strike' against the University of Auckland. This saw many students withholding their rent from their halls of residence.  Just over a month later a decision was made to end the strike. Now, still with no response from the University, the group is moving away from solely targeting the tertiary institution, and instead focusing on legislative change.  Producer Evie spoke to the groups organiser, Matthew Lee, who explains what happened over the course of the strike and what led to its end.

There's no clear end in sight for student protests over accommodation fees at Auckland University.  Members of the Students for Fair Rent group haven't been paying rent since the start of this month.  They're demanding a blanket rent reduction and safeguards against future rises.  Group founder Matthew Lee told Mike Hosking that the university has a responsibility to provide safe, secure, and affordable accommodation for students, which they're not doing.  He said that they also have the responsibility to engage with students and have explicitly refused to do so.  Lee told Hosking that striking is the only way they have to show the university that this is a significant issue.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the later half of 2023, the University of Auckland announced rent increases of more than 8% at their halls of residence. The University justified this as a necessary measure, caused by the impacts of inflation However, students bearing the full brunt of the rent increase said the University's decision to increase rent and subsequent explanation were unacceptable, pointing out that inflation rates only increased by 5.6%, and that the increases would make the cost of living unaffordable for a large number of students living at the halls of residence.  This prompted a number of students to form a “Students for Fair Rent”, a group advocating for rental rates at the University of Auckland to be made more affordable by matching rental rates to inflation rates and the average cost of housing in Central Auckland.  In August last year, Students for Fair Rent organised a petition on change.org that received 1500 signatures, urging the University of Auckland to lower the cost of living which the University of Auckland reportedly ignored. Last week, on the 19th of April, Students for Fair Rent held a rally on Campus calling for a rent strike as a last resort protest against the cost of living at the halls and the University's dismissal.  95bFM News Reporters, Shane and Oto, went down to the rally and spoke to Matthew Lee, the founder of Students for Fair Rent, as well as Green Party Co-Leader Chloe Swarbrick, to discuss call for a rent strike.

Meanwhile, the rent strike has expanded to six buildings, and some of the strikers have secured concessions through collective bargaining, including a 75 percent reduction in rent over 12 months, cancellation of a scheduled rent increase, and dismissal of eviction lawsuits. In this episode, we get an update on these developments from Brad Hirn, lead organizer with the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco.

We discuss the details of NATO (National Association of Tenants Organisations) and the success of the rent strikes themselves, but also we try to apply the learnings to the modern day: what can we learn from the rent strikers of the 70s? What's different now? And what's the most disgusting but legal thing you are allowed to throw at the Gardaí? This was a really insightful and enjoyable conversation about housing and organising but also about community, history and connection. Everybody knows it and almost everyone feels it: we're in the grips of a major housing crisis. Home ownership is out of reach for so many people and for renters, units are hard to find and expensive. It seems everywhere you turn these days, there's another rent strike. One of the factors driving this affordability crisis has been a shift away from publicly built housing toward large corporate-owned buildings. As Prof. Nemoy Lewis, from the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Toronto Metropolitan University, puts it: now “housing is treated as a commodity, rather than a human right.” He joins Vinita to discuss these corporate landlords and the disproportionate impact they are having on Black and low-income communities. He says it's creating truly income-polarized cities – and urban centres that are increasingly accessible to only a small group of wealthy people.

TUNE INTO THE TOWN: FORD GOVERNMENT SETTING UP WORKING GROUP TO DEAL WITH AG REPORT 12:00-12:30 Marissa Lennox is joined by Lisa Raitt, former deputy leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Glenn De Baeremaeker, a former Toronto City Councillor and Deputy Mayor and George Smitherman, former Ontario Liberal MPP for Toronto Centre who also served as a health minister and deputy Premier. Meanwhile, it's Tuesday, and we're kicking things off with our assembly of Recovering Politicians and a lot has happened since we last spoke with them, none more conspicuous than the lingering Greenbelt issue, which doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. The very latest is an announcement by the Ford government to establish a working group to deliver a quote “comprehensive response to the report” – a top priority for the government. But what's the actual deal here? Is this just a sideshow to divert attention from the fact that they're resolutely treading the path toward development – the result is the same. We'll also delve into fresh numbers from Angus Reid: Trudeau's crew is trailing Pierre Poilievre's opposition by a seven-point gap. And we're halfway home in this federal election cycle. So, how much weight should we give this? And what do you think about Pierre Poilievre's new look? Is he beginning to resonate with you personally? CANADA'S INFLATION RATE UP AGAIN 12:30-12:45 pm Marissa Lennox is now joined by Moshe Lander, Senior Lecturer of Economics at Concordia University in Montreal. Let's shift our attention to the economy for a moment. Canada's inflation rate climbed to 3.3 percent come July. It's a drop from the peak of 8.1 percent we saw last summer, but it's a step up from the 2.8 percent just last month. So what's the key takeaway from these numbers? Let's bring in Moshe Lander, Senior Lecturer of Economics at Concordia University in Montreal. SOME TORONTO TENANTS ARE RENT STRIKING 12:45 to 1 pm Marissa Lennox is now joined by Khalil, a resident at Thorncliffe Park Drive and an organizer of Thorncliffe Park Tenants and Adnan Subzwari, Associate with Mills and Mills LLP. Tenants in a Thorncliff Park apartment complex, situated just North of East York in Toronto, have taken a stand by refusing to pay rent. Their protest stems from rental increases of nearly 10 percent over the past two years. The rent strike has been going on for four months now, and is the second in Toronto spurred on by above-guideline rent increases. One of the residents of the three-building apartment complex, who lives there with his family, Khalil Aldroubi, joined us to discuss.

The Pruitt–Igoe housing complex opened in 1954 with many hoping it would be a model for urban housing projects. But, problems would start soon after it opened. Residents from Pruitt-Igoe and other public housing facilities grappled with its shortcomings in St. Louis and politicized its failures before the nation. ——— Wendell O. Pruitt Homes and William Igoe Apartments, known together as Pruitt–Igoe, were 33 high-rise buildings that were 11 stories high, and were designed as a new cutting-edge redevelopment model of public housing by urban planners and designers. Mayor Joseph Darst believed the project would recreate new and vibrant spaces within St. Louis, which he defined as “tangible evidence of progress in the continuing war against slums and decay. St. Louisians can point to their city as a model of modern development.” With this perception of progress, Pruitt-Igoe would open its doors to residents in 1954. Not long after the doors opened, tenants would see problems arise. Residents experienced rodent infestation, broken heating units, no hot water, overflowing trash incinerators, and overall insufficient living conditions. ——— The 1969 St. Louis Rent Strike demonstrated how Black activists tackled public housing as a civil rights issue. The rent strike encouraged tenants to demand better living conditions. In this community-driven initiative, tenants withheld their rent money and insisted they only pay 25 percent of their income, increase police protection, and improve maintenance. The rent strike went on for nine months and would later inform the federal legislation Brooke Amendment to the Housing Act of 1969. Though residents of Pruitt Igoe seemed to win the battle against poor conditions during that time, it was later demolished between 1972 and 1976. Essentially, what was perceived as a successful legislation, continues to leave many low-income families in intolerable condition today. ——— Here's history is a joint production of the Missouri Historical Society and KDHX. The Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles has historically been home to tightknit immigrant communities. Francisco Gonzalez had lived in an apartment a block away from the neighborhood’s Mariachi Plaza for a decade when the building was sold, and the new owner nearly doubled his rent. Several of Gonzalez’s neighbors got rent hikes too. At first, Gonzalez figured he had no choice but to get out, but then he learned about another option. On this week’s show, the last of our fifth season, we’ll follow Gonzalez and his neighbors through a rent strike — involving lawyers, protests, tense sit-downs and, maybe, a way to stay in their homes. What can we say about this week's guest, Eirene Tsolidis Noyce? A force to be reckoned with, that's for sure. Eirene is the inaugural secretaty of the Renters and Housing Union (RAHU), Melbourne's new union born in the fire of the 2020 Rent Strike at the beginning of COVID-19. Hailing originally from Moonee Ponds, Eirene played piano from a young age and eventually discovered blues, playing in a range of groups before moving to New York and learning first hand what it's like to live in a country without a safety net. Eirene has given her time to and supported different actions over the last 10 years, from Occupy Melbourne to the Djap Wurrung Embassy and is a super smart, articulate and thoughtful person now raising hell for slumlords across the city! It was great having Eirene on the show and we hope you enjoy her story. Thanks, Eirene!

In this May Day double feature, Nashwa and Ryan sit down with Patricio Dávila and Phil Zigman of  RenovtictionsTO and Cole Webber of Parkdale Organize. In this May Day double feature, we discuss the state of renovictions in Ontario as well as how people are resisting. Tenant organizers have been working together to resist and fight back. One example is West Lodge Tenants organizing a food bank and winning space from their massive corporate landlord to host it out of. We also have witnessed rent strikes in the city.We recommend people also check out and support Keep Your Rent and People's Defence Toronto, both groups are mentioned on the show and doing amazing work. We also suggest people use and share the Toronto Covid Evictions Tracker if they or their comrades are facing evictions. Anti-eviction action and organizing has an important history. In the second year of the Great Depression, it was so intense that evictions effectively stopped in New York, Detroit, and Chicago. Solidarity to those fighting evictions, upcoming episodes looking at the Farmer's protests, and COVID-19 in India. If you want to support the creation of more content like this and and unlock Habibti Please exclusives please consider becoming a patron on Patreon or a paid Substack subscriber. How is Covid-19 affecting the real estate industry? In today's episode of Passion for Real Estate Investments, COO of National Real Estate Investors Association, Charles Tassell, talks about the state of the real estate industry during the Covid-19 pandemic. From working on public policies and legislation, to serving on national boards, to being a Deer Park, Ohio Council Member, Charles has spent a significant amount of time affecting change through his many successes. For over 20 years, Charles has been working on public policies, advising policy development for multiple municipalities, counties, and states. He has extensive experience in real estate policy development, where he has served on local and international panels on issues including crime, environmental issues, foreclosures, and even dealing with methamphetamine labs. In 2015, Charles founded the non-profit, Street Rescue. He is currently also a campaign consultant, a Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Elder, and serves as a board member for COAST, and Maximum Freedom, Inc. How does Charles see the real estate industry playing out during the Covid-19 pandemic? We hear his thoughts on the Rent Strike, and he makes some predictions about certain real estate markets. He tells us about the many opportunities that are available for entrepreneurs to expand their business during the pandemic, and how REIAs are helping people cope with the shock of the current economic situation. If you're looking for ways to improve your business, or you want to get involved with your local REIA, this episode will point you in the right direction. Highlights from the interview * “For anybody who wants to be an entrepreneur, real estate gives you an option to grow, and to grow beyond anything you can do in a JOB.” * “Not paying rent, or doing a rent strike, is actually not paying essential workers.” * “We're living virtually. This is a great time to improve your skills technologically.” * “Wealth is more than just the dollar amounts.” * Charles is down to 120 units from 232 units, and there's a good reason why. “Buy when everyone else is selling. The now monthly protest, which one group of activists says has attracted more than 12,000 California tenants, is to push government officials at all levels to cancel rent and mortgage payments, ensuring renters can stay in their homes now and when the pandemic ends. *******RATE, REVIEW and SHARE******** Find out more info, get involved and donate: Black Lives Matter LBC DefundLBPD.com DSA Long Beach Hit us Up: wait podcast homepage w.a.i.t.whyamitalking@gmail.com

Since our last episode, the world seems to have been turned upside down. Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic continued to ravage communities around the world, but a nationwide groundswell of protest against police brutality has erupted in the wake of George Floyd's killing. Meanwhile, hostilities between the US and China are escalating over the pandemic response. In this episode, we'll talk to labor activists in Myanmar and the US about how workers are coping with the pandemic, examine anti-Asian sentiment in the presidential race, and look at protests in Asia, Minnesota and beyond. Organizing API communities amid the pandemic and systemic racism We spoke Kim Geron, Monica Thammarath and Alvina Yeh of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance about how Asian American workers and their communities are faring as they face the COVID-19 pandemic, economic devastation, and an explosion of racial unrest. (A portion of this segment also appeared on Dissent's Belabored podcast.) Pushing back against "tough on China" Tobita Chow, head of Justice is Global, talks about the politics of the presidential election are heating up under the specter of China. While Trump's ant-China rhetoric is on full blast, Biden's upping his anti-China game too. A group of Asian American activists recently penned an open letter to Biden condemning one of his campaign ads, which accuses Trump of "being soft on China," and called for a more enlightened foreign and domestic policy when dealing with both Beijing and the Asian American diaspora. #CancelRent in Chinatown Melanie Wang with CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities talks about a rent strike in Chinatown, part of a citywide campaign to demanding rent and mortgage relief for all New Yorkers. Myanmar's workers are on a strike wave Labor organizer Andrew TIllett-Saks discusses workers' struggles in Myanmar's garment factories and the broader impact of the pandemic on conditions in South and Southeast Asia's factories. This April 1st, people around the world will go on strike and refuse to pay rent. In the midst of the pandemic, we are confronted not only with a virus, but with the murderous logic of the market. Before COVID–19 hit, millions already struggled to afford rent, mortgage, or loan payments; today, all but the wealthiest face ruin, caught between either sickness or poverty. It's inevitable that most of us will not be able to pay the bills next month—but what we do about it is up to us. This episode offers tools, examples, and history to support you and your neighbors in withdrawing your support from the regime of rent and debt and to devote what resources you have to nourishing yourself and your community through mutual aid. We'll share excerpts from CrimethInc. texts promoting the strike, discuss the 5 Demands framework and anarchist critiques of it, work through concrete tactical suggestions from a rent strike tool kit, present an invitation to a strike from the West Coast and an interview with the radical housing collective Station 40, and offer a condensed version of an inspiring history of rent strikes around the world over the past century. {March 31st, 2020}   -------SHOW NOTES------   Table of Contents: Introduction {0:01} Refuse to Pay! {2:50} The Five Demands, or Actions, or Not {6:20} Toolkit for Rent Strike Organizing {13:20} Invitation to a Strike {21:55} Interview with Station 40: On Rent Strike against Gentrification and the Pandemic {28:10} Rent Strike? A Strategic Appraisal of Rent Strikes throughout History—and Today, translated from a Spanish-language text published by Editorial Segadores in Catalunya. In the US, find a local rent strike organizing effort here—or check out examples from New York City (see their useful FAQ), Olympia, Durham, Chicago, and elsewhere. Teen Vogue politics editor Lucy Diavolo joins us to discuss what will hopefully be the story of this crisis: neighbors organizing themselves into mutual aid networks to support each other against the virus and the capitalist system's attempts to profit from the disorder. We talk about the concept of mutual aid historically, how it's emerged in the last 15 years in the front lines of disaster relief, and some of the new ways its emerging in these early days of the pandemic. There's a lot to cover, but we talk about grocery funds and distribution, food pantries, rent strikes, squatting, childcare, self-care, and much more. Then we talk a bit about the philosophy of mutual aid: does it provide an image of a better world, or just help us survive through the collapse of civilization?
