We dive into the origins of the genre, from basement parties to block-wide movements, and spotlight 12 trailblazing women who shaped the genre: Sha-Rock, The Mercedes Ladies, Roxanne Shanté, Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Lil' Kim, Foxy Brown, and Missy Elliott. From pioneering MCs to groundbreaking producers, these women didn't just break into the scene—they rewrote the rules, using Hip Hop as a platform for empowerment, activism, and cultural change. "We want this to be big, we want this to be memorable; we want this to make an impact in the industry, but also in New York.  Hip hop was born here, and we want to make sure we're doing this justice." -- Stella Nova "Me and hip hop are the same age. We both just celebrated our milestone 50 years. I literaly grew up with hip hop; that age when you start to music and paying attention to what the cool stuff is, that's when hip hop was really starting to flourish.  I remember when Roxanne Shanté did Roxanne's Revenge and when Salt-N-Pepa did The Showstopper... And so I feel like it's just a part of me as anything in life is... Hip hop is like a sibling, almost." -- ILOV GRATE  "I rememeber being young and walking with my mother in our neigthborhood [of Hollis] and her pointing out Run D.M.C. to me... and also I remember when I was a little older, we were playing outside and someone came over and said 'LL Cool J is in the church basement around the corner, playing basketball!' My love of hip hop was curated at home."  -- Rain Supreme "This is an all BIPOC festival, and understanding that hip is, and was in its origins, a Black and Brown art form that was created in the Bronx in the 70s by Black and Brown folks. And it's got this global understanding now, and people of all different genres, and races, and ethnicities listen to it and appreciate it, and also culturally appropriate it; there's all the gimmick. But, this is a specifically BIPOC festival; we want to showcase that and obviously everyone can come and support and be entertained and be inspired by this festival."  -- Miss AuroraBoobRealis Extraordinary New York burlesquers Rain Supreme, Miss AuroraBoobRealis, Stella Nova, and ILOV GRATE are coming together to bring forth a brand new festival celebrating hip hop music.  The Boombox Festival starts up with fundraising shows, such as May 20th at Coney Island and culminates in a extravaganza in September; with plans to expand already for 2024. Viktor gets a few behind the scenes moments from the four entertainers both as soloists and collaborators; plus inspired talks on race, class, misogyny, dance, stan wars, and who in current music is carrying the torch for the grandmasters. They then discuss Cardi's emergence as a social media personality, what made her uniquely charming in that space, the singular position of having to translate an established personality into musical form, the surprise success and critical acclaim of her debut album Invasion of Privacy, the unique ways Cardi's musical career operates as just one aspect of her broader celebrity, and finally the doors she has helped open for the plethora of female rappers currently all operating at once in the pop space. In 2018, Cardi B became only the second woman rapper ever to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her single “Bodak Yellow,” bringing attention to the industry’s delayed recognition of women’s contribution to the medium. The Motherlode: 100+ Women Who Made Hip Hop by journalist Clover Hope highlights women who have shaped the music, power, and reach of rap. In The Motherlode, Hope covers more than 100 female rappers, from game changers like Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott to current reigning queens like Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion, profiling each of these women, their musical and career breakthroughs, and the ways in which they each helped change the culture of rap. Some rappers featured in the book were respected but not widely celebrated. Some were gifted yet lesser known. Some are impossible not to know. They are characters, caricatures, and lyricists, at times both feminine and explicit. The Motherlode also features interviews with some of the most influential women in the business, such as JJ Fad, Charli Baltimore, and Mia X, as well as illuminating commentary from cultural icons such as music video director Dave Meyers and filmmaker Ava DuVernay.@clovito

We had the pleasure of interviewing Prema777 over Zoom video! Staten Island, NY’s Prema777 released her new single "Workin" last month and is taken from her debut album Take Flight that will be re-released early 2021 on iNTeLLectual Entertainment (2nd Generation WU, GFTD) via Dock Street Records.  “Take Flight is my go where golden age hip hop boom-bap meets vibrancy, still hitting with pure lyrics as an emcee,” she says.  “The album was custom-tailored by building the entire sound from start to finish in the House of Dreams studio on Staten Island with my producer J. Glaze" (Cappadonna, Inspectah Deck, Lil Jon, A Tribe Called Quest, Kurupt, Chasing Banksy movie score). Featuring Brooklyn emcee Nitty Scott, who was known for her hit 'Monster', Prema777 feels the synergy between the two brought out her best. “’Workin’ was built with Nitty in mind," she explains.  "I was gearing towards a tribal and fun sound with an empowering vibe to showcase our shine together as both being raw and pure emcees.”  Blending the essence of 90's boom-bap and modern soul, Prema777 discovered R&B and hip hop artists TLC (especially Left Eye), SWV, Missy Elliot, and Aaliyah, while her older brothers introduced her to golden age hip hop artists Eric B. & Rakim, Slick Rick, Gangstarr, and Wu-Tang Clan.  A wordsmith in the tradition of MC Lyte, Roxanne Shanté, or Ladybug Mecca from Digable Planets, her musical talents also embrace the current realm of artists like Tierra Whack and Princess Nokia.“Unlike most kids, I enjoyed time on my own and used it to explore creative outlets like music and writing,” she says of her upbringing.  Growing up in Middletown, NJ with her mother until she was 12 years old, Prema777 moved in with her father and two older brothers on Staten Island for her teen years.  Reflecting her struggles as a teenager growing up on her own in New York City after her father passed away, her raw sonics and poetic lyricism is drawn from negative experiences and emotions and leans toward finding beauty in the dark.Often joking that the healthy spitting of bars between them was what brought them together initially as a couple and then a family, the first time she and her husband iNTeLL (2nd Generation WU and GFTD and mastermind behind iNTeLLectual Entertainment) collaborated musically was on a couple of the tracks from Take Flight.  During the making of Take Flight, Prema777 found out she was pregnant but instead of halting all progress on the recording, she made it a point to go to the studio every day to complete the album.  Prema777 delivered Take Flight and her son on the same day, proof of her dedication to creating a path for other female artists to feel comfortable and confident as she strives for success, progress, and musical and personal growth. "Workin" by Prema777 is out now via iNTeLLectualEntertainment and Dock Street Records distributed by Tommy Boy Entertainment. We want to hear from you! In this week's episode, Mark, Barney & Jasper talk extensively about one of the great record labels — a hallowed home to such groundbreaking acts as Jimmy Cliff, Nick Drake, Roxy Music, (Bob Marley and) the Wailers and, yes, U2. Listening to clips from John Tobler's 1989 audio interview with Island founder Chris Blackwell, RBP's power trio reflect on what made the label such a powerhouse for non-mainstream genres like folk and reggae. Blackwell talks of its transformation after 1967, as well as his first encounter with Marley in 1972.A neat segue via Lenny Kaye's 1975 overview of the label leads "the team" into a discussion of Sparks, the American art pop duo who've just released their new album, A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip. Mark & Barney reminisce about the Mael brothers' Island years in the '70s, commencing with Kimono My House and its astonishing hit single 'This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us'. The E.Jones Show Feat Sharonda Podcast

Roxanne Shanté is a hip-hop pioneer, becoming the first female rapper to have a hit single. Known for her razor-sharp disses, she started the Roxanne Wars in the mid 80s and was the only female member of the hip-hop collective, the Juice Crew.SynopsisWith her distinctive raspy-squeaky voice and fearless gloves-up delivery, Roxanne Shanté cut an idiosyncratic dash through the male-dominated world of 1980s hip hop. She was first female rapper to have a record — and sparked the first ever hip-hop beef, the Roxanne Wars. Shanté courted controversy in 2009, when her claim to possess an undergraduate degree and a PhD was disputed by the Slate writer Ben Scheffner. But she could never be accused of being boring, or having nothing to say — hence the eagerly awaited biopic of her life and music, Roxanne Roxanne, produced by Pharrell Williams and Forest Whitaker, which premiered in January 2017 at the Sundance Film Festival.Kid Battle Rapper from the ProjectsThe First Lady of Rap was born Lolita Shanté Gooden on November 9, 1969, and raised in the Queensbridge Projects — the largest public-housing development in north America and one of the epicenters of hip-hop culture. Shanté told the website Jezebel.com that her mom entered her in a local rap battle when she was just 10 years old — and Shanté won $50. "It just grew from there," she said. "I was already a great little battle rapper." Soon she was taking on all-comers on street corners — wiping the floor with older teenage boys from across the projects. In 1984 when Shanté was 15, her neighbor Marlon Williams — aka producer Marley Marl — asked her to rhyme over a track he was making using the beats from an early hip-hop record, Roxanne Roxanne by U.T.F.O. The eponymous Roxanne in the song was dissed by U.T.F.O. for spurning their advances, so Lolita Shanté Gooden rechristened herself Roxanne Shanté — and fired off a profanity-laden rhyme from the girl's point of view that mocked U.T.F.O. as lecherous losers. The track caused a sensation on the radio, and when Marl recorded it with a new beat (to avoid legal issues) and released it as "Roxanne's Revenge," it sold 250,000 copies in New York alone.Beat Diss: the Roxanne Wars"Roxanne's Revenge" sparked a tranche of response records — estimates range from 30 to 100. In today's terms, Roxanne became a meme. U.T.F.O. went as far as enlisting a female rap character of their own — The Real Roxanne, voiced first by the rapper Elease Jack, and later by Adelaida Martinez — to embark on a series of brutal tit-for-tat diss records with Shanté. Meanwhile Ralph Rolle called Shanté's gender into question on "Roxanne's A Man;" The Potato Chips contributed "Roxanne's Real Fat;" there was even a release by Gigolo Tony and Lace Lacey, purporting to be "The Parents of Roxanne."During this time Shanté became a mother at 15 to her son, Kareem, but still found the wherewithal to fire off combative replies, including 1985's "Bite This," on which she baited Run DMC and LL Cool J. "The boldness was startling," noted the journalist Dan Wilkinson on Redbull.com.Roxanne vs KRS OneAs the only female member of Marley Marl's Juice Crew, Shanté was soon embroiled in another legendary hip hop beef — the Bridge Wars, between Queensbridge and the South Bronx, whose talisman, KRS-One of Boogie Down Productions, she dissed on "Have a Nice Day" in 1987 with "Now KRS One, you should go on vacation/With that name sounding like a wack radio station." KRS-One responded directly in rather more vulgar fashion on "The Bridge Is Over" the same year.Shanté Releases Two Albums, Then Retires at 25Shanté toured extensively through the second half of the 1980s, releasing a string of singles including, notably, "Go on Girl" in 1988, "Independent Woman" in 1990 and "Big Mama" in 1992 — on which she called out other female rappers including Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and Monie Love.
