How much American bootstrap ideology are we obligated to deliver to students? This week Ryan Boyd and I take a look at some “practical advice” about “surviving college” from a couple of recent popular books on the subject, and we discover a disturbing strain of self-help/New Age/Protestant work ethic/grindset philosophy that, perhaps unsurprisingly, fails to acknowledge structural and material barriers (money, food, housing, etc) to student success. So what's a teacher to do? Sell the hustle or sell the trapdoor? Subscribe to hear the whole episode
This week Yasmin and I watch two films, Working Girls (Lizzie Borden, 1986) and Working Girl (Mike Nichols, 1988), as we think about the intersection of sex, gender, labor, and capitalism. Is sex work any different from an office job? That depends: What brand of hyper-gendered humiliation are you willing to endure for money? On the very first episode of Record Trap, Justin Farrar joins me to lay out our mission statement for the podcast: a regular series of conversations about music, counterculture, and radical politics. What better way to kick off this project than by talking about drugs and The Beatles? The world's greatest rock band didn't just put out classic albums; they also helped introduce a whole generation to the psychedelic experience through their playful artistic engagement with LSD, marijuana, and other tools of chemical adventure. We take a trip through the 1960s to explore how four lads from Liverpool journeyed to the outer reaches of their own minds and packaged the lessons for the masses. Stories about the past form the ideological foundation of the American project. This week's guest, Alicia Puglionesi, is a historian and writer whose work often focuses on “hauntings” – both real and imagined – in our collective history. Her latest book, In Whose Ruins: Power, Possession, and the Landscapes of American Empire, explores the fake narratives and mythologies created to justify land theft, genocide, and the endless extraction of natural resources for profit. In this conversation, she explains how fundamental elements like oil, water, and atomic power were harnessed by capital through processes of historical erasure and, above all, storytelling. Digital Humanities? More like Digital Hu-SHAM-ities, am I right? On this episode of Campus Trap, Ryan Boyd and I trade stories about our experiences with the digital pedagogy boom/bust cycle of the past decade or so, in which a whole generation was sold on the idea that computers would somehow make higher education better for everyone (spoiler alert: it didn't happen). So if the COVID/Zoom era finally made us understand that tech can't solve the university's problems, what's our path forward? Is there an opportunity to reclaim and repurpose the campus? “What is a woman? What is a man?” Go fuck yourself! Those questions are traps! In this episode of Gender Trap, Yasmin and I talk about the right's absurd yet powerful assault on all things gender-related, and how the left's reactive, academic takes on gender hobble our ability to fight back. What would a popular left vision of gender actually look like? Because it ain't RuPaul! We also, of course, bring an episode of Mad Men (S1, E2, “Ladies Room”) into the mix, as we examine how Betty and Don's fucked up 1950s nightmare marriage showcases the trap of Cold War domestic gender roles in dynamic, psychologically gory detail. Grace Elizabeth Hale is a professor of history and American Studies at the University of Virginia whose work focuses on race, class, and culture in the 20th century, particularly in the American South. Her latest book, Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture tells the story of how a small college town in Georgia became a center of indie and punk culture in the 1970s and 1980s, producing major bands like the B-52s and R.E.M. while maintaining a queer D.I.Y cultural scene that's become a significant legend in the annals of American rock. What makes Athens so special? And can that magic be recreated in other places? On the debut episode of Campus Trap, Ryan Boyd joins me to reflect on how much the stereotypical “college experience” has evolved since our undergraduate days, when a countercultural bacchanalia was still dominant in the popular imagination, if not in practical reality. From the world of keg-stands and bongloads to the sobering realities of 21st century academia, we trace our own paths through graduate school and into a precarious labor market that seems shakier by the minute. How did our collective vision of college transform in the neoliberal era? And now that we're professors ourselves, how do we navigate an increasingly dysfunctional society alongside our students? Jason Vuic is a historian and writer whose books tell incredible stories about the unintended consequences of unbridled American ambition. This conversation focuses on his two latest books: The Yugo: The Rise and Fall of the Worst Car in History and The Swamp Peddlers: How Lot Sellers, Land Scammers, and Retirees Built Modern Florida and Transformed the American Dream, as we explore how the market for cars and houses creates a fertile landscape for cynical opportunism and environmental disaster. Carrie Conners is a poet, writer, and professor of English at LaGuardia Community College; her latest book Laugh Lines: Humor, Genre, and Political Critique in Late Twentieth Century American Poetry explores how American poets since the 1950s engage humor as a political and aesthetic tactic. In this conversation, we talk about the language games of standup comics from George Carlin to Dave Chappelle, and trace the wider shifts in poetry, comedy, and political culture since the invention of the atomic bomb. We also examine how Carrie navigates these ideas in her own poetry, with excerpts from her two excellent collections, Luscious Struggle (2020) and Species of Least Concern (2022). Yeah buddy! It's awards season once again! And just like we have every year since the show started, we've got a roundup of eligible works from past guests! This episode's full transcript, with links, is below. Hello, and welcome to Tales from the Trunk: nominating the stories (and other things) that did make it. I'm Hilary B. Bisenieks. Listeners, it's that time of year again, where we're all looking back—maybe frantically—on what we did last year and what we consumed as awards nominations open up. To help with that, I've once again reached out to all of my past guests to see if there's anything they'd like me to mention on this show. The full transcript of this show will also be in the show notes, so don't worry if things go by fast. To start off, I know I've tweeted about it, but I want to thank every single one of you who nominated this show for Best Fancast last year. I'm still in a bit of shock that this show made it to the Hugo award long list. This year, Tales from the Trunk is eligible for Best Fancast for the Hugos and, until January 21st, r/Fantasy's Stabby Award for Best Audio Original - Nonfiction. It would be a huge honor to get your nominating vote for either award. John Appel, who joined us on book tour last summer, is eligible for both Best Novel and Best Debut Novel in the science fiction category, where applicable, for Assassin's Orbit. Nino Cipri is eligible in the Best Novella category for Defekt, the sequel-ish follow up to 2020's Finna. R. K. Duncan, who joined us way back in our very first season, has five eligible short stories, which you can find in his awards eligibility post, linked in the show notes. Of those, “Her Black Coal Heart a Diamond in My Hand” is dearest to his heart. Sarah Gailey, one of this show's staunchest and most long-time supporters, has The Echo Wife, eligible for Best Novel, and their limited series, Eat the Rich, eligible for Best Graphic Story and other comics categories. Sarah Hollowell (you didn't think you'd get one of these Sarahs without the other, did you?) is eligible for Best Novel, Best Young Adult, and Best Debut Novel for A Dark and Starless Forest! Tyler Hayes (Tyler, please forgive me for putting you slightly out-of-order) has the story “The Devil You Don't” eligible for Best Short Story. Jordan Kurella has both a story and an essay eligible this year! Their story, “Personal Histories Surrounding La Rive Gauche, Paris: 1995-2015” carries content warnings for mentions of suicide and psychological abuse, and is eligible for Best Short Story. Their essay “Un/Reliable: Reflections in The Drowning Girl,” which carries content warnings for discussion of mental illness and suicide, is eligible for Best Related Work. L. D. Lewis, who joined us this past spring, is eligible in a bevy of categories! Her stories “From Witch to Queen and God” and “Dizzy in the Weeds” are both eligible for Best Short Story. FIYAHCON 2021, like the 2020 version, is eligible for Best Related Work, meanwhile, and the Hugo Award-winning FIYAH Literary Magazine is eligible for Best Semiprozine. Sarah Loch has a number of stories and essays eligible, all of which you can find in her eligibility post. Of those, she'd like to particularly highlight “How Dungeons & Dragons Helped Me Escape a Cult” for Best Related Work. Jennifer Mace, the English One, is eligible for Best Fancast for Be The Serpent—and I should mention that this is their final year of eligibility—along with Freya Marske, the Australian one, and Alex Rowland, the American One. Additionally, Macey's poem, “letters from the ides” is eligible wherever speculative poetry awards are given, and her poem-story, “Birds Are Trying to Reinvent Your Heart,” which is eligible for Best Short Story. Speaking of the Australian One, Freya Marske, who joined us in the traditional serpent month, October, is eligible for Best Novel and Best Debut for A Marvellous Light. Preeme Mohamed, who joined us again this summer, has had quite the year as far as novellas go! These Lifeless Things, And What Can We Offer You Tonight, and The Annual Migration of Clouds are all eligible for Best Novella. Additionally, A Broken Darkness is eligible for Best Novel. You can find a link to her full eligibility post in the show notes. C. L. Polk has an eligible story, “The Music of Siphorophenes,” and a novel, Soulstar, and, in a first for guests of this show, their Kingston Cycle, consisting of Witchmark, Stormsong, and Soulstar, is eligible for the Best Series Hugo. dave ring has a trio of eligible works this year: The Hidden Ones is eligible for Best Novella, “Top Ten Demons to Kill Before The World Ends” is eligible for Best Short Story, and Unfettered Hexes: Queer Tales of Insatiable Darkness is eligible for Best Anthology! Theodore has two stories eligible for Best Short Story, “A Ship With No Parrot” and “The Coven of TAOS-9.” Additionally, Underway is eligible for Best Novella, and Self-Publishing Formatting Guidelines is eligible for Best Related Work. Rem Wigmore, who joined us for an impromptu Oceana Month is eligible for Best Novel with Foxhunt. Fran Wilde, who joined us way way back at the start of 2021, would like to highlight “Unseelie Brothers, ltd.” which is eligible for Best Novelette. You can find other things she wrote and read last year on her blog, linked in the show notes. Finally, last, but most certainly not least (and who would have thought that we'd have so many W-names?), John Wiswell would love for you to read and consider his novelette “That Story Isn't The Story.” His other eligible works can be found on his site, linked in the show notes. 2021 was absolutely a wild year, but I hope that this episode helps jog your memory of some of your favorite things, or maybe even introduces you to a brand new favorite that you missed the first time around. I'm deeply grateful for your consideration of this show or any of the works mentioned on this episode, as are all the amazing, talented creators behind those works. As mentioned at the top of the episode, links to all of the works mentioned, along with any eligibility posts, whether specifically called out or not, will be in the show notes. A bank workers union leader says Westpac's move to give staff five days a year of wellbeing leave is a step in the right direction but workers wanted six weeks annual leave instead.Westpac New Zealand has announced a shake-up in its leave offering for its 4500 workers from today with the wellbeing leave, increases to parental leave and an extension in what its bereavement leave will cover as well as an extra day of Covid leave. The wellbeing leave is on top of four weeks annual leave but is being given to staff on a use it or lose it basis, meaning staff can not accrue the leave or have it paid out if they leave the bank.Marc Figgins, Westpac NZ general manager of human resources and communications, said the bank had listened to feedback from employees about how to improve their work/life balance and had also talked to First Union about the issue."The last 18 months have been hugely challenging for our employees. They've adjusted to life in a pandemic while also helping customers through the financial stress and uncertainty caused by Covid-19."Figgins said as a society New Zealanders were now much more aware of the importance of wellbeing and was placing a higher premium on being mentally and physically well."By offering this leave we're giving our people more opportunity to balance work time and family time, without having to choose between the two. We know that is important to them and we also believe a healthier workforce is good for business."But Callum Francis, the finance spokesman for First Union, said the wellbeing leave had come through its collective bargaining with the bank after it asked Westpac to match BNZ's six weeks annual leave.BNZ increased its annual leave from four to six weeks in 2020."We went into bargaining with them and proposed six weeks. Members had said they were adamant it shouldn't be anything less than five and originally their wellbeing leave actually came with a number of conditions - it wasn't just about wellbeing."Francis said in the original conditions workers would have had to use three weeks of their annual leave first before being allowed to apply for the wellbeing leave. The bank had also proposed if the minimum entitlements under the Holidays Act were to increase that Westpac would consider the wellbeing leave as part of annual leave, not on top of it."We had them drop that and the three weeks because we said it absolutely wasn't going to fly."Francis said it would have preferred the bank to have given staff six or even five weeks annual leave."Annual leave is a far better entitlement. They are obviously trying to ring-fence it and manage their liability rather than provide a better benefit to employees."The wellbeing leave is a step in the right direction. I think other than that an increase in someone's annual leave is much more favourable for employees. It is a better benefit but in this current environment employers should be supporting the wellbeing and health and safety of their employees. Westpac is going down the right path but they could and should do more."Westpac is also increasing the parental leave top-up payment for eligible employees from 22 weeks to 26 weeks. Under this entitlement, Westpac NZ tops up the Government subsidy to their full salary amount and will give partners four weeks' paid leave which they can take up until the first birthday of the child. It has also extended its bereavement leave policy so that if an employee or their partner suffers from a miscarriage or has a stillborn baby, they're entitled to five days' leave. If an employee loses a sibling, grandparent or grandchild they will also now be entitled to an extra three days' leave, bringing the total amount to six days' leave.Francis said primary carer's leave pay top-up was "marvellous" but it did come with certain conditions such as the employee staying with the company for a certain period of time or they would need to pay the top-up back.Ryan Boyd, a social media manager at...

For this month's bonus episode, I'm talking a bit about NaNoWriMo! The transcript for this episode follows: -- Hello, and welcome to Tales from the Trunk: reading the stories that didn’t make it. I’m Hilary B. Bisenieks. Twenty twenty might have been simultaneously the best and worst year to try to do NaNoWriMo. Best because we didn’t have our usual distractions thanks to the pandemic, so we could spend more time at home working on our writing. Worst because, well, everything. And despite or because of all that, many of us tried to write a novel this November. As some of you may have seen on my main twitter account, I won NaNo this year. This was my first time winning—by which I mean writing over fifty thousand words during November—though it was my sixth November attempt. I wrote fifty thousand, four hundred and fifty one words of a brand new manuscript in November, which represents what I estimate to be about fifty five percent of the first draft of this book. So yes, I “won” NaNo in that I wrote all those words, but I didn’t finish the book in November. That’s ok, though. I’m over halfway done with the first draft of a novel. I wrote more in the past month than I did in the previous few years combined. That’s a huge win for me. And like John Wiswell said on our November episode, if you manage to write any words in November, you’re doing better than most writers out there. So however much you wrote in November, good job! And if you didn’t write in November, guess what? You’re still doing great. So as someone who finally won after five quote-unquote unsuccessful attempts, what did I learn? What were my secrets? Mostly it came down to having support. Nobody actually writes (or creates any other art, for that matter) in a vacuum. In my case, I couldn’t have written as much as I did without the support of my spouse (who won NaNo on her first try!) or all my friends online, who encouraged me to sit down and write for half an hour with them at whatever time I was at my computer. Elizabeth, Macey, Noah, Caitlin, Rem, Val, Laura, and so many other folks were right there cheering me and everyone else along. It turns out for me that doing sprints like that is the most-consistent way I can get words out. If I just sit down to write with the goal of just making wordcount for the day, often I’ll just stare at the blinking cursor. If I sit down and put on a timer for fifteen or thirty minutes and announce on twitter or slack or to my spouse that I’m going to write for a set amount of time, that creates enough pressure on me to get words out, and if I can just keep going after that timer goes off? Great! And if not, there will be another run after a short break. The other thing, which I learned about myself a while ago, but which doing NaNo really reinforced for me, is that I need an outline for longer works, but that I shouldn’t be too precious with it. While for most of the month I had at least two thirds of the book outlined, I only really needed to have the next two chapters firm in my head, because anything beyond that was likely to change in some way or another anyway. Finally, I learned that I can, in point of fact, win NaNoWriMo. I went in with the goal to write fifty thousand words, an average of sixteen hundred and sixty-seven words a day, and I did that. If I didn’t hit par one day, and I frequently didn’t, that was fine. And if I hadn’t won? That would have been fine, too. Any words I made in November would be a win. Any words you can make any month are a win. NaNo doesn’t work for everyone, and that’s ok. You know the best way to make words for yourself, and anything anyone else tells you is at best a helpful suggestion. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go make some more words. This novel isn’t going to finish itself, however hard I might wish that it would. Tales from the Trunk is mixed and produced in beautiful Oakland, California. Hello! On this special spooky spooky Halloweenish episode, Lars is off, so filling in is the amazing Ryan Boyd of Rank and Vile! The show we shamelessly ripped off for this! We talk about LEGEND(1986) and how it's certainly movie shaped, how we all have a cultural memory of THE WITCHES, Great British Bakeoff and our favorites taken too soon from us, rambles about video games and other things, and the still fantastic MONSTER SQUAD! Enjoy!
Mike Overson hosts this week. This week's discussion features tax credits and strategies with guest Ryan Boyd of Last Switch.
Roboticists, like other artificial intelligence researchers, are concerned about how bias affects our relationship with machines that are supposed to help us. But what happens when the bias is not in the machine itself, but in the people trying to use it? Ayanna Howard, a roboticist at Georgia Tech, went looking to see if the “gender” of a robot, whether it was a female-coded robotic assistant like Amazon’s Alexa, or a genderless surgeon robot like those currently deployed in hospitals, influenced how people responded. But what she found was something more troubling sexism—we tend not to think of robots as competent at all, regardless of what human characteristics we assign them. Howard joins producer Christie Taylor to talk about the surprises in her research about machines and biases, as well as how to build robots we can trust. Plus, how COVID-19 is changing our relationships with helpful robots. Plus, contraceptives have been around since the 19th century, but for decades, more than half of the pregnancies in the United States were unintended. In recent years, that number has improved, but it’s still an astonishingly high 45%. Why is that? Family planning is a balancing act. Access to contraception, education on how to use it, and new developments that fit the needs of the public are needed. Even though there have been advances in all these fronts we somehow are still not completely hitting the mark. This is reflected in the high percentages of unintended pregnancies. How can we do better? Linda Gordon, a historian and professor at New York University and author of the book The Moral Property of Women: A History of Birth Control Politics in America and Cynthia Harper a professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco join producer Alexa Lim to discuss this. And, if you hear the words “once upon a time,” you might guess that you’re hearing the beginning of a child’s fairy tale. And if you hear the words “and they all lived happily ever after,” you know you’ve probably come to the end of the story. But what happens in between? Writing in the journal Science Advances, researchers report that by using computerized text analysis methods, they’ve been able to identify words that help indicate the structure of a narrative. The team analyzed thousands of stories—from fiction found on Project Gutenberg to the transcripts of TED Talks—and found some common rules that seem to apply to most narratives. During a story’s introduction and scene-setting parts, for instance, articles such as “a,” “an,” and “the” feature heavily. Conversely, during moments of crisis and conflict, words like “think,” believe,” and “cause” appear. The researchers wanted to find out if these patterns might function as a sort of signal, helping an audience follow plot lines. However, these patterns don’t necessarily make a story any better—the study did not find that stories using these rules were necessarily more popular. Ryan Boyd, a psychologist at Lancaster University in the UK, joins Ira to talk about the structure of stories and the rules we use when navigating a narrative.

In this unusual episode, Derek and Nathan talk with Maximillian Alvarez and Ryan Boyd, two leading commentators on higher education, work, and precarity about where sport and fandom fit in their lives. Maximillian Alvarez is a dual-Ph.D candidate in Comparative Literature and History at the University of Michigan. His work has appeared in countless venues, including The Nation, The New Republic, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Boston Review, The Guardian, Los Angeles Review of Books, Dissent, and The Baffler. He is also the host of the incredible Working People podcast -- check this out, like...right now. Ryan Boyd is Assistant Professor of Writing at the University of Southern California. His work appears frequently in venues such as Los Angeles Review of Books and Public Books. He is a must-follow on Twitter, where he is an outspoken and much-needed critic of the adjunctification of higher education and its toll on the academic precariat. This is a wide-ranging discussion of fandom, identity, and labor that, frankly, could have continued for hours longer than it did. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. You can find Ryan on Twitter @RyanABoyd and Maximillian @maximillian_alv. Ryan's most recent essay in Public Books on why college is worth fighting for is here. The holiday season is finally here.. and no I'm not going to take a dump on this or ridicule the meaning of Christmas.. I actually love the Christmas Season, minus the shopping, plus drinks and holiday movies equals happy Mike. In this episode I talk about what my favorite holiday movies are... Die Hard, enough said. I also talk about how actor/comedian Ryan Boyd and comedian/veteran Isaac Ames took it upon themselves to drive to Standing Rock and be one of the many on the front lines protecting the Sioux Tribe. These two guys are local heroes and we should follow in their footsteps. Whatever you need to do to get involved, get involved. Dont worry about Donald Trump taking our rights away, Just act like Kevin McCallister from Home Alone and protect your rights with a bb gun, some paint cans, and a tarantula.
