Meet Alan Arkin, a sly comic actor who turned his fine eye for characters into a legendary career that spanned 50 years and won him many awards, including an Oscar at age 72 for Little Miss Sunshine. From his beginnings as a folk singer, to a stint with the Second City Improv troupe, to an iconic role in Catch-22, to late-in-life triumphs on the big and small screens, Arkin always imbued his supporting characters with first-rate humanity. As always, find more clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Alan Arkin? Like many iconic comics before (and since), Alan spent time at the Second City Improv Troupe and was a big part of their classic early sketches. Here is Alan, as Noah, auditioning animals fo the ark. https://youtu.be/GaqaFcG0sy0?si=6R41wo-M_gDu0DEa Little Miss Sunshine was a surprise hit back in 2006 with it's oddball family road trip capturing the public imagination. A big part of that was Alan's portrayal of the grandfather and his interaction with Abigail Breslin who played the title character. https://youtu.be/10WeBvmN0C0?si=3uAPgM2sja5kdImz Joseph Heller's antiwar novel Catch 22 was a cultural touchstone, and Alan's portrayal of Captain John Yossarian was key to the success of the movie adaptation. Here is Yossarian discovering the meaning of Catch 22. https://youtu.be/oRIFdh0QG7A? Alan's last major role was as Norm Newlander, longtime agent to acting coach Sandy Kominsky (played by Michael Douglas). The word team is used in may areas of lives, work, school, play, sports, etc. We use acronyms like "Together Everyone Achieves More-TEAM" or "Team work makes the dream work!". The language implies that we are involved in some sort of competition. Teams compete. The members of Second City IMPROV, in Chicago, use the word "Ensemble" instead of the word team. Tune into this podcast to learn the advantages of an ensemble mentality and how it may transform your "team work".
Emphasizing the cohesive role of each member of an advisory team should enhance meetings with clients, Kelly Leonard says.
This episode is a Behavioral Grooves first: we bring you our first ever joint podcast! Mid-way through the episode the tables turn and our guest interviews us! Our guest is the amazing Kelly Leonard, host of the great podcast called “Getting to Yes, And…” presented by Second City Works and WGN in Chicago. This unique conversation with Kelly, Kurt and Tim gives us a glimpse of the people behind the podcasts. It is a light-hearted, raw conversation scattered with some really personal, touching stories about challenges each of them have faced in their lives. For over 30 years, Kelly has worked at Second City Improv - in all capacities moving up to Executive Vice President. He's worked with some of the most unforgettable and influential comedians on the planet, such as Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Keegan Michael Key, Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler! His book, "Yes, And," received rave reviews in Vanity Fair and the Washington Post. But what we really wanted to talk to Kelly about was his work as executive director of insights and applied improvisation at Second City. He now co-leads a new partnership with Booth School at the University of Chicago that studies behavioral science through the lens of improvisation. Their mission is to use humor and empathy, interactivity and dialogue, to elevate conversations and inspire people to perform better. Kelly talks to us about what improv actually is. He believes it's fundamentally different from comedy and says many people tell him that improv training changed their life. He likens improv to “yoga for your social skills”! We discuss Kelly's concept of “Yes, And”. So often as humans, our default setting when asked to be involved with something, is to do nothing or say no. But our regrets are almost always about the things that we didn't do. He describes saying “yes, and'' as a little nudge. And he has some innovative ways of sharing this idea through improv exercises Kelly has discovered that real value is added to the “Yes, And” approach by adding a final step called “Thank You, Because”. Those are the words that help bridge a gap between us and someone else we fundamentally disagree with. By thanking someone for sharing information, their “fear brain” isn't triggered, and they feel gratitude. The “Because” part forces us to find something in what they've said that is true for both of us. We then have some space to stay in the conversation together. Our conversation with Kelly then flips! And for the first time ever on Behavioral Grooves, the interviewers become the interviewees! We delve into the behavioral science work that Tim and Kurt are passionate about; negativity bias and how to overcome it, talking to our emotions and naming our fears, the 4-Drive model of Motivation, as well as how to improve really dull work meetings! Kurt and Tim tell us the “yes, and” story of how the Behavioral Grooves podcast actually started! And Kelly shares how an office fire was the spark that ignited his podcast journey. In this unique episode you will learn what makes these 3 great podcast hosts really tick and what techniques and exercises they use to stay positive, grateful and what they've learnt by saying “yes, and”. On the 35th episode of “Great Dane Nation,” Morten is joined by an icon in the comedy world, the one and only Bill Murray (04:36 – 41:36). But first, he checks in with TommyFreezePops (Tom Carroll), where the guys talk about how Morten and Bill know each other, and the hilarious process of booking Bill as a guest for the podcast (01:49).We then move to our interview with Bill, where he discusses a wide array of topics: the moment he realized he was funny (05:35); moving from “Second City Improv” in Chicago to doing comedy in New York, and eventually joining “Saturday Night Live” (08:38); what it was like working with Lorne Michaels, and how he was able to get such a strong team together at NBC (11:23); the sketch on SNL that he felt broke him through as a star, and why he could never feel comfortable being a part of today’s cast (14:43); why he always felt of himself as an actor that had the ability to be funny, rather than a comedian trying to play serious roles (19:10); what he loved about “Groundhog Day” (20:31); why he loved working with Woody Harrelson on “Kingpin” (21:50); why his performance in “Broken Flowers” almost drove him to quitting acting (24:24); why Bill is never actively seeking his next role (27:12); describing the ridiculous room he is doing the interview from at the airport in Denver (29:04); accusing Morten of stealing “The Name Game” from Barbra Walters (30:59); and this week’s edition of “The Name Game,” featuring thoughts on Brian Doyle-Murray, Sophia Coppola, John Belushi, Chevy Chase and Michael Jordan (31:27).Then, TommyFreezePops is joined by Kevin Rogers for his weekly check-in with the experts from VegasInsider.com (42:26 – 51:32). Should people with Lakers’ tickets at +275 to win the title be hedging as the team falters down the stretch (44:01)? Are the red-hot Cardinals a team people should be eyeing at +3000 to win the World Series (46:55)? Who does Kevin think provides the best value in the NFL Rookie of the Year market (48:42)?Finally, we close things out with Morten’s “Game Winner” – a weekly segment where Morten monologues his biggest takeaway of the week. This week, he talks about why he was “dead-wrong” about his friend Bill Murray (51:32).
Today we are joined by JD Gershbein, the Founder and CEO of Owlish Communications, a company that helps clients build a strong online presence to achieve a distinctive and competitive edge. JD is a TEDx speaker, LinkedIn expert on personal branding, and at one time a member of the Second City Improv group in Chicago! JD takes us down his unusual path towards becoming the digital branding expert he has become and how his improv skills are still at use every day. We discuss LinkedIn as a platform that has evolved from a job seeker site to possibly the most important document you’ll build in all of business. With the evolution of LinkedIn, we have seen video become a prominent source of content, JD shares with us what you need to keep in mind when doing video and why your brand could be on the line. This is an insightful conversation for anyone looking to expand their LinkedIn profile or exploring video as a means of delivering their content. Three Key Takeaways: Thought Leaders can use LinkedIn as a flexible platform that can change and grow with them. Delivering your thought leadership by video requires a certain level of authenticity and production value. Improvisation isn’t just a skill for the stage, thought leaders can develop it to have better conversations.
In this solo episode of the Happy Hustle Podcast, I get into the most important improv principle that I learned at my time at the Second City Comedy School, that is how to Yes, AND! This type of mentality can be applied to your personal and professional life to take an optimistic approach while reversing that toxic "no but thinking". Second City is a legendary comedy institution full of amazingly talented Alumni including comedy greats like, Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, Jim Belushi, John Candy, Amy Pollard, Will Ferrell, Jason Sudekis, and many more. I personally trained, worked, and volunteered there for 3 years when I graduated college. I did everything I could to be around the establishment and its incredible comedy teachers in order to soak up as much knowledge as possible. The first principle they teach you is how to Yes, AND a scene and your scene partner. Making sure that if your scene partner says, "Howdy, Cowboy" to you that you don't respond "I'm not a cowboy, I'm an alien." which would surely kill a scene. The best practice is to say, "Howdy" back or summon up your most intoxicating "evening Ma'am" voice thus confirming that you both are in the Wild West and now the scene is off to the races. We cover improv principles and other topics including: -Yes and your life -reverse no but thinking -optimism over pessimism -improve creativity and collaboration -how to yes partner's statement, then build on that premise with something new Here is a link to learn more improv games you can play with your team, friends, family: yes-and-5-more-lessons-in-improv-ing-collaboration-and-creativity-from-second-city Improv is one of the best skills I have ever studied and learned. It has helped me tremendously as both a professional actor/model and as an entrepreneur. I highly recommend applying Yes, AND as well as other improv skills to your game. The Second City is arguably the most renowned and important improv institution in the world. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Stephen Colbert all honed their craft in Chicago on The Second City stage. Kelly Leonard hired each of them, along with many other budding stars throughout the 1990s and 2000s, when he oversaw Second City’s creative expansion and development. In 2015 he co-authored the book, Yes, And. Today, Leonard is the executive director of applied improvisation at Second City Works, the business arm of The Second City, and he’s the host of the Getting to Yes, And podcast. He joins us to talk about how applying improv to business teaches us to listen and focus effectively, collaborate with others, and be ready for change. Because business life isn’t any different from human life. We just need to listen to each other more, embrace our failures, and keep improvising. Listen to this podcast episode to learn: • Why improv is essentially “human being practice” that teaches us how to make something out of nothing -- and that’s what we do in business, too • How rehearsals and synchronicity create “peak performers” in the arts...and in business • Why organizations (and the humans within them) have a listening problem, and what we can do to fix it • How isolation and a “conspiracy of silence” around suffering ultimately hurt us at work • Why it’s better to incorporate many failures into your success narrative rather than try to beat failure out of you • The one improv technique you can start using today to create a better connection with your coworkers For more information: www.secondcityworks.com

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we get stuck in a time loop, caddy some shacks, and ain't afraid of no ghosts as we talk about the popular culture icon, comedian, and actor: Bill Murray. Bill Murray is known for his comedy roles (and more lately some pretty inspiring drama roles in indie flicks like Lost in Translation and anything by Wes Anderson), but he’s gained a meme-worthy following based on the random sightings and “Bill Murray Stories” that pop up on the internet these days. Born in the shadow of Chicago, Illinois, Murray was the fifth of nine children. Three of his brothers and one sister (who is also a nun) went into acting and/or comedy with some level of success, but it took a while to get there. Bill was feisty and rebellious as a youth and even fell on the wrong side of the law while attempting to smuggle nine pounds of marijuana out of Chicago O’Hare airport! This led him to follow his brother Brian-Doyle Murray into the famous Second City Improv group, and things were never the same after that. He excelled at comedy, and within a few short years, he was working with John Belushi for National Lampoon and eventually took the spot Chevy Chase vacated in Saturday Night Live. From there, he launched a movie career, headlining comedy giants such as Caddyshack, Ghost Busters, and Ground Hog Day. After a hiatus and then more comedy, he found a second wave of success with Lost in Translation, and this was the start of his indie film career. But none of this is as important as his stories. He now Murray-bombs regular people all over the world. He steals their fries. He covers their eyes while they piss at a urinal and whispers “no one will ever believe this.” He crashes parties, just to do people’s dirty dishes, and he drives cabbies around in their own city. His tendency to have gonzo run-ins with every day folks has given him a cult like following, and we talk about the best of the stories as well as the movie The Bill Murray Stories. We have some good laughs on this one and argue a lot about his best movies.
