From CO2 resurfacing to acne solutions and safe treatments for melanin-rich skin, Dr. Belkin demystifies how lasers work and what patients need to know before undergoing treatment.Dr. Belkin shares his journey from an artistic background to dermatologic surgery, where his passion for aesthetics and science led him to specialize in laser technology. He explains how lasers use specific wavelengths to target skin concerns like pigmentation, blood vessels, and wrinkles, offering precise and effective treatment options.A major highlight of the episode is the discussion on CO2 lasers, which are widely used for skin resurfacing and collagen stimulation. Dr. Belkin explains how these lasers improve fine lines, scars, and sun damage—particularly around the eyes—without the need for surgery. For acne, he clarifies that while lasers can reduce oil production and treat scarring, they are not a cure for active breakouts. Instead, combining laser treatments with medical therapies like Accutane leads to the best long-term results.Dr. Belkin also emphasizes the importance of treating darker skin tones carefully with specialized settings to prevent hyperpigmentation. He urges patients to seek trained professionals with deep knowledge of laser physics and safety.Whether you're considering laser hair removal, skin resurfacing, or acne treatments, this episode offers expert insights into the ever-evolving world of laser dermatology. JoElle specializes in No Downtime Chemical Peel Treatments, Customized Corrective Facial Treatments, and a wide range of Laser Treatments when treating skin of color which she shares more on techniques on the show. She feels there is a gap in basic esthetic training and education when it comes to treating clients of color, which is a big discussion in our industry right now and we're thrilled to extend it to our own audience through our show. JoElle has dedicated her career to creating more innovative treatment methods that address the most common skin conditions of these clients that have proven to deliver long-lasting results without the worry of complications and downtime. She takes a natural "inside out" integrative approach by combining non-invasive treatments and products without harmful chemicals to achieve healthy beautiful skin and "Beautiful Skin Begins Within" is the premise that JoElle Lee's treatments and methods are founded. JoElle believes that there is a gap in basic esthetics training when preparing estheticians to work in the skincare industry, especially for those wanting to have their own business. We also get into the importance of learning, getting properly trained on machines and services while following the Fitzpatrick Skin Classification Chart correctly. Over the years, JoElle has helped many estheticians and small businesses in the industry to solve complex problems and increase their bottom lines. With her straightforward, no-nonsense approach JoElle's philosophy is to first, uncover the learned negative beliefs or negative thinking that has created a barrier or obstacle in your business and tear that wall down. Followed by uncovering the hidden assets, underperforming activities, and undervalued possibilities of your business. JoElle teaches effective and more profitable marketing strategies and how to stand out from the competition.  Many of her ideas and strategies have been implemented and led to not only increased profits but a more diverse loyal clientele. If your child is suffering from inflamed or enlarged tonsils, or obstructed breathing, your first thought may be that he or she needs a tonsillectomy. Thanks to alternative treatment modalities like laser technology, however, your child may not have to undergo invasive surgery. Take a look at the latest pediatric laser treatments for sleep apnea and hypertrophic tonsils. What are Hypertrophic Tonsils?Simply explained, hypertrophic is the medical terminology for enlarged tonsils or tonsillar swelling.Symptoms of Hypertrophic TonsilsSymptoms of tonsillar hypertrophy can include:Difficulty feeding in the pediatric populationMouth breathing or noisy breathingRestlessness during sleep or sleep apneaExcessive daytime sleepiness even after 7 hours of sleep/hypersomnolenceLoud snoringBehavior changesPoor school performanceSleep Apnea and Hypertrophic Tonsils“Most cases of obstructive sleep apnea in children are associated with hypertrophic tonsils,” cites an article in American Family Physician. “Hypertrophic tonsils can be caused by recurrent pharyngitis and local inflammation, especially in children and young adults.” Although tonsillar enlargement may be asymptomatic, enlarged tonsils can fall back and block the oropharynx, or the part of the throat at the back of the mouth.  Unchecked, “tonsillar hypertrophy may also lead to respiratory and cardiac complications.”Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (POSA) is a common chronic condition that causes repetitive episodes of partial or complete collapse of the upper airway during sleep, resulting in a reduction or cessation of airflow. Because the person finds it difficult to breathe, they typically awake throughout the night. POSA is a significant medical problem linked with permanent cognitive functional loss, decreased emotional regulation, and growth stunting if not treated in children.Minimally-Invasive Laser-Assisted Treatment for Pediatric Obstructive Sleep ApneaThe latest generation of surgical lasers offers faster, safer and less-invasive treatments for hypertrophic tonsils and obstructive sleep apnea. The use of their scientifically-proven ACW Nd:YAG and Er:YAG laser wavelengths provides extremely precise laser incision, and controlled thermal coagulation and bleeding effects to ensure a more successful and comfortable surgical treatment designed to shrink hypertrophic tonsils and immediately open the airway.Benefits of the laser-assisted treatment include:Minimally-invasive proceduresNo sedation may be requiredLittle or no bleedingLess patient downtimeFaster healingHigh-precision treatments with simultaneous disinfectionAt Airway & Sleep group, we utilize Fontana's family of high-performance LightWalker® and SkyPulse® surgical laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty systems for treatment of sleep apnea. The Fotona LightWalker® laser, previously used for inflammatory conditions and wound closure, is targeted specifically at the soft palate for mucosal contraction and keratinization. This approach has been reported to safely and effectively reduce symptoms and increase both airway volume by tightening and elevating the oropharyngeal tissues. While treatment for adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is generally treated with air pressure machines, like the CPAP, the first line of treatment for pediatric patients has commonly been the surgical removal of hypertrophic tonsils and adenoids. But either a partial or full tonsillectomy has both short- and long-term risks. Short-te

One of the most important things to do after scheduling a laser treatment or chemical peels is to begin preparing the skin. When the skin gets injured, pigment cells come to rescue the area, resulting in an elongated healing process. By applying Retin-A, you can prepare your skin for treatment which will make all the difference. As quoted from Dr. Steven Davis, “If we were going to wax the floor, we would first wanna strip off the old wax so that the new wax is actually going to be applied to the surface we wanted. Very similarly, when we use this special compounding cream, it's going to have a combination of some of this bleaching effect and also some of this Retin-A purposefully so that we're actually peeling off or flaking off that old, dead, dried skin surface so that when we finally do the laser, it's going after the proper surface.” The next time you find yourself heading into the office for laser treatments, make sure you prepare your skin as much as you can. After seeing your results, you'll understand why!

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), when the skin becomes discolored or darkened, is a common consequence for people of color receiving laser treatments. It's a major challenge for Dermatologists and one with no clear solutions. Dr Vincent Richer of Pacific Derm in Vancouver, joins Kirk to discuss the article he co-authored with Dr. Ian Wong in the Jan/Feb 2021 issue of the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, "Prophylaxis of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation From Energy-Based Device Treatments: A Review." It’s time for an overdue conversation about systemic racism within the professional skin care industry. Recent events have inspired reflection on the role ASCP may have unknowingly played. As part of our reconciliation with this, we are providing our fellow estheticians and skin care experts a platform to discuss the inequalities and injustices they have experienced and explore proposed changes as it relates to the profession and the skin care clients we serve.  Join ASCP Executive Director Tracy Donley and Ella Cressman, licensed esthetician and fellow ASCP podcaster as they engage in some incredible stories shared by JoElle Lee and Toshiana Baker about their unique journeys into to the world of beauty. Listen and even relate as they share the challenges they’ve endured and the successes they’ve achieved along the way. Both of these women are successful estheticians that just happen to be African American.   Bios JoElle Lee A highly respected skin care expert, educator ,and celebrity esthetician, JoElle Lee is the author of Esthetician on a Mission: Business Building Workbook and co-author of Multicultural Skin Treatments: Learn How to Effectively Treat Skin of Color Using Chemical Peels and Laser Treatments, which has become a trusted guide for treating diverse client populations. In addition to being featured in numerous national consumer publications and a guest on radio programs around the country, JoElle is recognized for being the former personal esthetician to First Lady Michelle Obama during her time in the White House. JoElle specializes in no-downtime chemical peel treatments, customized corrective facial treatments, and a wide range of laser treatments for skin of color. JoElle feels there is a gap in basic esthetic training and education when it comes to treating clients of color. She has dedicated her career to creating innovative treatment methods that address the most common skin conditions of these clients that have proven to deliver long-lasting results without the worry of complications and downtime.  JoElle takes a natural "inside-out" integrative approach by combining noninvasive treatments and products without harmful chemicals to achieve healthy beautiful skin, and "Beautiful Skin Begins Within" is the premise on which JoElle Lee's treatments and methods are founded. JoElle feels there is a gap in basic esthetics training when preparing estheticians to work in the skin care industry, especially for those who want to have their own business. Over the years, JoElle has helped many estheticians and small businesse owners in the industry to solve complex problems and increase their bottom lines. With her straightforward, no-nonsense approach, JoElle's philosophy is to uncover the learned negative beliefs or negative thinking that has created a barrier or obstacle in your business, and then tear that wall down. She then uncovers the hidden assets, underperforming activities, and undervalued possibilities of your business.  JoElle teaches effective and profitable marketing strategies and how to stand out from the competition. Many of her ideas and strategies have been implemented and resulted in not only increased profits, but a more diverse loyal clientele.  JoElle's path to becoming an esthetician was inspired by another professional in the field. As someone who always had a passion for beauty and a desire to serve others, she recognized that a career in esthetics would allow her to marry both of her passions. More than 20 years later, that hunch proved correct. Today, JoElle can be found conducting personalized skin care consultations, serving as keynote speaker at industry events, teaching classes around the country on the topic of multicultural skin, and sharing her expertise via her webinars, online courses, and social media channels. How many of you have had laser? Laser or IPL hair removal, laser pigmentation removal, laser for reducing redness. There are so many aesthetic treatments that use lasers to smooth out, refine or reduce the appearance of imperfections on the skin. When you had your initial consultation, was it mandatory for you to have a skin check or mole map? Lasers work by targeting different chromophores in the skin, such a pigment in hair or a freckle or blood like in a dilated capillaries…. What also contains these chromophores? Benign and both malignant lesions, therefore these treatments may also target and destroy the clues to malignancy in a mole, or a lump, or a bump on the skin. Welcome to episode number 7 of the Heal Thy Skin Podcast, I’m Marni, your host and today I am speaking with Fiona Moss, Dermal Clinician, Dermatoscopist and University Supervisor.
