Making the Museum

Is there an organization for the exhibition field? A new initiative is picking up steam. The exhibition community in the US, some say, has recently gone from having “nearly one” professional organization — to none at all. That's because of the unexpected 2023 dissolution of NAME, the National Association for Museum Exhibition, a group within the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). But now a new effort is rising at SEGD, an international organization headquartered in the US. It takes the form of a PPG, or professional practice group, specific to exhibition practitioners. How can everyone in the field access professional development and mentorship? What is the role of networking in a professional community? Should there be better standards for the field?Cybelle Jones (CEO of SEGD) and the cofounders of the new PPG, Steven Rosen (President and Creative Director, Available Light), and George Mayer (Retired Vice President of Business Development, Kubik Maltbie), join host Jonathan Alger (Managing Partner, C&G Partners) to discuss “A New Home for the Exhibition Community.” Along the way: how listeners can get involved, the role of local meetups, and what a survey revealed that people in the field most urgently need.Talking Points:ElevateAdvocateEducateStandardizeSocializeCelebrate How to Listen:Making the Museum: https://www.makingthemuseum.com/podcastApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/making-the-museum/id1674901311 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6oP4QJR7yxv7Rs7VqIpI1G Everywhere: https://makingthemuseum.transistor.fm/ Guest Bios: Cybelle Jones is CEO of SEGD, a multidisciplinary community creating experiences that connect people to place. Prior to joining SEGD, Cybelle led numerous acclaimed design projects during her 25+ year tenure as Principal of G&A, including the National WWII Museum, the International Spy Museum, and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum. Cybelle is actively involved in various boards and has spoken on the field of experience design at AAM, the V&A, FIT, AIGA, AIA and MuseumNext. Steven Rosen, President and Creative Director, Available Light: Merging performance lighting techniques with traditional non-theatrical environments launched Steven's career and his founding of Available Light over 30 years ago. From Museum exhibits to immersive architecture to trade shows, the fun never stops—it helps that he works with some of the planet's most talented lighting aficionados. The originality and grand scale of Steven's award-winning designs are evident in many one-of-a-kind award-winning projects as: The Neural Climber interactive at the Franklin Institute, Ocean Hall for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the International Spy Museum in DC, and Chicago MSI's U-505. He is passionate about supporting the lighting community. George Mayer first joined Maltbie Associates in 1986 and was responsible for identifying new business opportunities, proposal writing, presentations, contract negotiation, and oversight of project management teams to ensure satisfactory fulfillment for permanent and traveling exhibits. From 2002 to 2009, George worked as the founding director of a new museum fabrication business for Art Guild, Inc., a nationally active trade show exhibits producer. Episode 59: Understanding Eddie Van Halen - Interview with Steven RosenIn the newest episode we have the absolute pleasure of chatting with and interviewing Steven Rosen - a renowned rock journalist who has finally released his long-awaited book about the friendship he shared with the late great guitar player Edward Van Halen.Steve has previously authored seven other books including biographies on Jeff Beck, Free/Bad Company, Black Sabbath and Randy Rhoads, and writes about what it was like being friends with one of the most iconic guitar players in the world - with whom he shared many hours at his Hollywood home, his 5150 studio, on aeroplanes, in cars - and even jamming on several occasions with Van Halen!Steve was authorised to write Edward's biography back in 1985 but due to several delays by Eddie, followed by his illness and then a disagreement with Rosen, the book never came to light. In order to tell the story accurately, Steven pored over hours of interviews and peered deep inside distant memories to create a book unlike any other out there.Laz & Felipe are delighted to have Steven on the show and to talk about all things Eddie Van Halen!‘Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen' by Steve Rosen is out now and available for purchase here: TONECHASER BOOK (tonechaserbook.com)- a must have for any Van Halen, Guitar or Rock fan this Christmas!

Is lighting art or science? If you're a curator tasked with lighting design, where do you start? Is lighting about light, or about shadows? Lighting designers Steven Rosen and Ted Mather (Available Light) join host Jonathan Alger (C&G Partners) on Making the Museum, the podcast, to discuss Revealing the Story with Light. Along the way, we learn how an exhibition is like a theatrical stage, and get a reminder that design is a team sport.  Quotable Quotes: “If it ain't lit, it ain't there.” “Lighting is about choosing where the shadows are going to fall” “If the lips aren't lit, no one hears them.” “More lights aren't about being brighter, it's about more control.” “You are painting with light.” “Design is a team sport” How to Listen:Subscribe and listen anywhere you get your podcasts. Our guest Steven Rosen is an expert in training sales leaders to be bold, and be prepared to present their big ideas with all of the emotion that salespeople are good at, plus all of the logic that the boardroom likes. Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, says it's a threat that African Americans need to take particularly seriously “We get a lot of misinformation circulating through our communities,”Benjamin said.“We fundamentally don't trust some of the non-black institutions because they donot serve us well.We need to make sure our trusted institutions, clinicians of color, churches, community organizations, are better educated.”The biggest challenge is the fact that people of color,African Americans, start out with health outcomes that are disproportionately poor when compared to white Americans. The highest risk,if you get this disease,is to someone 60 or older with chronic disease. With African Americans, you start with a population that is disproportionately sicker, and if it gets exposed, it will have a higher deathrate.Everyone obviously goes back to the Tuskegee experiment.he syphilis study where African American men were not treated for syphilis and they continued not to be treated even after we had treatment available.Ultimately the Public Health Service apologized,as well as President Clinton apologized on behalf of America...We also have experiences where people go into health centers and the word on the street is you go in, but you don't come out.The reason they don't come out is that people go into those places in a much later state of the disease.

At the age of 72 and one who has been a vegetarian for over twenty five years,I am compelled to share this topic of discussion, with the hope of inspiring "Food for Thought" Baba Wesley Gray Join us as we review  Food for The Spirit..By Steven Rosen "It would be wonderful if the world adopted vegetarianism, on religious grounds or any other.  But this is not likely. I am a skeptic, it's true, but I am also realistic.  In any event, what the people in general do will not affect me.I will continue to be a vegetarian even if the whole world started to eat meat. This is my protest against the conduct of the world. To be a vegetarian is to disagree - to disagree with the course of things today.Nuclear power, starvation, cruelty-we must make a statement against these things.  Vegetarianism is my statement. And I think it's a strong one.  Author Steven Rosen makes a similar statement in his book. And although I do no necessarily agree witn everthing he says, point for point,I do find his work fascinating and convincing. He correctly points our that various philosophers and religious leaders have tried to convince their following that animals are nothing more than machines, put on earth for our pleasure, with no purpose of their own. Mr.Rosen smashes this idea, however, and every reader who is predisposed to the vegetarian ideal will enjoy his logic and reason in doing this" -.Isaac Bashevis Singer
