"Engrossing...hard to put down."—The New York Times Book Review“Frostbite is a perfectly executed cold fusion of science, history, and literary verve . . . as a fellow nonfiction writer, I bow down. This is how it's done.”—Mary Roach, author of Fuzz and StiffAn engaging and far-reaching exploration of refrigeration, tracing its evolution from scientific mystery to globe-spanning infrastructure, and an essential investigation into how it has remade our entire relationship with food—for better and for worseHow often do we open the fridge or peer into the freezer with the expectation that we'll find something fresh and ready to eat? It's an everyday act—but just a century ago, eating food that had been refrigerated was cause for both fear and excitement. The introduction of artificial refrigeration overturned millennia of dietary history, launching a new chapter in human nutrition. We could now overcome not just rot, but seasonality and geography. Tomatoes in January? Avocados in Shanghai? All possible. In Frostbite, New Yorker contributor and cohost of the award-winning podcast Gastropod Nicola Twilley takes listeners on a tour of the cold chain from farm to fridge, visiting off-the-beaten-path landmarks such as Missouri's subterranean cheese caves, the banana-ripening rooms of New York City, and the vast refrigerated tanks that store the nation's orange juice reserves. Today, nearly three-quarters of everything on the average American plate is processed, shipped, stored, and sold under refrigeration. It's impossible to make sense of our food system without understanding the all-but-invisible network of thermal control that underpins it. Twilley's eye-opening book is the first to reveal the transformative impact refrigeration has had on our health and our guts; our farms, tables, kitchens, and cities; global economics and politics; and even our environment. In the developed world, we've reaped the benefits of refrigeration for more than a century, but the costs are catching up with us. We've eroded our connection to our food and redefined what “fresh” means. More important, refrigeration is one of the leading contributors to climate change. As the developing world races to build a US-style cold chain, Twilley asks: Can we reduce our dependence on refrigeration? Should we? A deeply researched and reported, original, and entertaining dive into the most important invention in the history of food and drink, Frostbite makes the case for a recalibration of our relationship with the fridge—and how our future might depend on it.Nicola Twilley* is author of Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves (Penguin Press, June 2024), and co-host of the award-winning Gastropod podcast, which looks at food through the lens of history and science, and which is part of the Vox Media Podcast Network in partnership with Eater. Her first book, Until Proven Safe: The History and Future of Quarantine, was co-authored with Geoff Manaugh and was named one of the best books of 2021 by Time Magazine, NPR, the Guardian, and the Financial Times. Engrossing, witty yet devastating stories about diasporic Indians that deftly question what it means to be safe, to survive, and to call a place home.An underappreciated coffee shop server haunted by her past attracts thousands of followers on social media with her peacock jewellery. For fans of Karen Russell's Swamplandia! comes a new tale of found family and magic. After his mother dies, Peter Berry collects memories in broken watches the way others collect photographs. Peter takes his box filled with broken watches and flees his childhood home to a battered apartment complex in San Francisco—his mother's favorite city—in an attempt to bury the box with the dark truths of her haunting memory before she returns to take him too. The night Sofia Morales's daughter disappears, Sofia begins to hear her daughter's voice. Her world crumbles—her marriage crumbles. After demanding her husband leave, Sofia runs from Buenos Aires, Argentina to San Francisco—a city she always wanted to visit—renting an apartment in a beat-up complex at the edge of North Beach and blasting the radio to escape the voice of whom she can't bear to listen. Peter and Sophia become close friends in the confined space of the city, finding companionship in the shadow of their unspoken nightmares. When Sofia receives a letter from her estranged husband, and Peter proves unable to bury his box of watches, the ghosts of their pasts once more threaten the lives they have created, now tearing at the fabric of their friendship with the tormented memories they keep, whether real or imagined. Unfolding over three decades, Life Between Seconds sets Peter and Sophia on a collision course with their respective pasts propelling them toward either redemption or damnation. Engrossing, heartbreaking, and surreal Douglas Weissman's first adult novel is a meditation on trauma, family, and how to heal after a great loss. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-lucas66/message

Narrated by the author, Surrender is an intimate, immersive listening experience, telling stories from Bono's early days in Dublin, to joining a band and playing sold out stadiums around the world with U2, plus his more than 20 years of activism. Throughout a remarkable life, music has always been a constant for Bono and in the audiobook, his distinctive voice is interwoven with a very personal soundtrack adding atmosphere and texture to each and every scene. From moments of classic U2 hits to snippets by The Clash, Patti Smith, Verdi, Johnny Cash and Mozart, Surrender also exclusively features clips of newly recorded re imagined versions of U2 songs including ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday', ‘With Or Without You', ‘One', ‘Beautiful Day' and more, glimpsed for the first time on Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.

Whew, this was a very heavy miniseries to get through! There is so much here that is admirable and, dare I say, enjoyable? Engrossing? Fascinating? Bear with me. The first episode flew by rapidly, even though it was filmed at the pace of molasses. I remember checking the time while watching it (not out of boredom, mind you, it's just a habit I have). I honestly thought I was only ten minutes in and it turned out, there was only 10 minutes left in the 45 minute episode! I can't break each episode down individually, so I'll talk about the show as a whole. First off, this show is nauseating to watch, so I absolutely had to spread the episodes apart by a few days, because I could only take so much. Binge the first seven episodes at your own risk. What's astounding is that Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story (I'm going to call it Dahmer from now on) is not too gory, or even that violent. There are some very gruesome things shown, to be sure, but those moments are quick and rare. This was the TV-Y version of what Dahmer actually did to his victims, as a majority was off-screen. Yes, it's verbalized by his neighbor and news reports in terrible detail, and there was one scene toward the end of episode 7 (I think) that visually disturbed me to my core. Do they make you sympathetic toward this monster? Ummm.... I think so. Honestly, the jury's still out on that one. But aside from the murders, the show spends just as much time, if not more, focusing on the families of the victims. The grief, the horror, their declining mental health as they see Dahmer everywhere they go. This movie genuinely honored the victims and their families. Dahmer (played by Michael Scott's nephew), was particularly creepy as Dahmer. It took a while for me to adjust from the Joker serial killer I'm so used to. Michael Scott's nephew played it cool and calm all the way to the end. Of particular interest to me was Niecy Nash, the actress who played Dahmer's heroic neighbor. Mind you, every actor was a standout, but I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for more of Nash. The last episode is of particular disturbance, as Dahmer claims to find salvation before his death. This raises innumerable questions, and the show doesn't shy away. Does he deserve salvation after what he did? Was God's forgiveness still available to him? I mean, these are really difficult questions to answer, and the whole of the last episode focuses on these dilemmas. If you don't think you can stomach the killings, I do recommend you watch the last two episodes as he's already detained and the story focuses on the victims and Dahmer's (?) redemption (?). Of course it angers me to think that there's a chance Dahmer is in heaven. But what business is it of mine? Who am I to question God? After all, he saved me. If he loves me despite all the terrible things I've done in my life, then who am I to judge others? The silver lining is that if God can save someone like Dahmer, cannibal that he was, then you are not beyond saving, either. But, according to what that last episode showed us, we can still be left to wonder if his remorse was genuine. After all, salvation is having a relationship with Jesus Christ, not the act of baptism, and if he was only trying to save himself and not pursue Jesus, then would that be a valid redemption? So many questions! But that's what I loved about this show. It made me think. It made me wonder how I would respond as a father if I learned one of my kids grew up to commit horrendous crimes. Dahmer gives a lot of focus to his parents. I strongly recommend this show if you can tolerate serial killer stories. If you frighten easily, stay away, because this show will mess you up and give you unexpected nightmares.Follow Life Through the Big Screen on these following pages:InstagramFacebookTwitterThis episode was sponsored by Spur Creative

Forget the Alamo: The Rise and Fall of an American Myth by Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson, Jason Stanford “Lively and absorbing. . ." — The New York Times Book Review "Engrossing." —Wall Street Journal “Entertaining and well-researched . . . ” —Houston Chronicle Three noted Texan writers combine forces to tell the real story of the Alamo, dispelling the myths, exploring why they had their day for so long, and explaining why the ugly fight about its meaning is now coming to a head. Every nation needs its creation myth, and since Texas was a nation before it was a state, it's no surprise that its myths bite deep. There's no piece of history more important to Texans than the Battle of the Alamo, when Davy Crockett and a band of rebels went down in a blaze of glory fighting for independence from Mexico, losing the battle but setting Texas up to win the war. However, that version of events, as Forget the Alamo definitively shows, owes more to fantasy than reality. Just as the site of the Alamo was left in ruins for decades, its story was forgotten and twisted over time, with the contributions of Tejanos--Texans of Mexican origin, who fought alongside the Anglo rebels--scrubbed from the record, and the origin of the conflict over Mexico's push to abolish slavery papered over. Forget the Alamo provocatively explains the true story of the battle against the backdrop of Texas's struggle for independence, then shows how the sausage of myth got made in the Jim Crow South of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. As uncomfortable as it may be to hear, celebrating the Alamo has long had an echo of celebrating whiteness. In the past forty-some years, waves of revisionists have come at this topic, and at times have made real progress toward a more nuanced and inclusive story that doesn't alienate anyone. But we are not living in one of those times; the fight over the Alamo's meaning has become more pitched than ever in the past few years, even violent, as Texas's future begins to look more and more different from its past. It's the perfect time for a wise and generous-spirited book that shines the bright light of the truth into a place that's gotten awfully dark.

From childhood through adolescence to adulthood, Timeless tells the story of one man's travels through the paranormal universe and out the other side. Engrossing and highly entertaining, join Bruce Solheim in his journey while making it your own. Having experienced ghosts, Solheim came to understand that death isn’t an end, it’s a doorway. So, what proof does he have? He doesn’t have proof; he has personal experiences, not only with life beyond death but also with many other seemingly unexplainable, paranormal phenomena that have occurred over the years. Paranormal is usually defined as something beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation. Parapsychologists, who aren’t deterred by skeptics calling their discipline of parapsychology a pseudoscience, have successfully studied many paranormal phenomena, including: Telepathy, Precognition, Clairvoyance, Psychokinesis, Near-death experiences, Reincarnation, and Apparitional experiences. Compelling, perplexing, and sometimes profound human experiences known as ‘psychic phenomena’ are real…it has taken more than a century to demonstrate it conclusively in accordance with rigorous, scientific standards, according to Dr. Radin who refers to it as psi phenomena. Perhaps some will resonate with you?
