SEASON 2 EPISODE 15: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: America is NOT divided over the prosecution of Trump. The latest polling shows the citizens of this country are DECIDED - by wide margins - in favor of it. They are DECIDED - by wide margins - that he broke the law in Georgia. They are DECIDED - by wide margins - that the 2020 election was NOT stolen from him. Yet even the news company that paid for the newest polling showing these inarguable conclusions, has to fulfill its fearful, lazy, sacred obligations to the American Media Deity of Bothsidesism by taking this data and headlining it "Americans are divided along party lines over Trump's actions in election cases." No. The nation is not. The Associated Press, and other news organizations, are afraid of stating any truth that requires any assessment or evaluation or analysis or risks accusations of Liberal Bias. Bothsideism is afraid of any choice that isn't “which is bigger: A) an elephant or B) a mouse.” Bothsideism is fearful and lazy and self-interested and it is dangerous and it is in play and even those organizations that actually PRODUCE the evidence that this nation is convinced Trump has broken the law in Georgia, in Washington, in America, and that Jack Smith and Fonni Willis are RIGHT to prosecute him – even those organizations are whispering the results for fear of blowback – or worse, because blowback is TOO MUCH TROUBLE FOR MANAGEMENT. That Trump acted illegally in Georgia outpolled more innocent explanations by 23 points. Support for the Jack Smith indictments outpolled opposition by 8 points. The percentage believing Trump did not have an election stolen from him is SEVENTY. There is even polling evidence that Trump not only isn't gaining Republican support because of the indictments but has lost a little.Hell, even Ted Cruz said yesterday he won't endorse Trump in the primary. But the major news organizations refuse to acknowledge any of this. Also today: the Trump Court Appearance Calendar is filling up so fast that the hearing to confirm a starting date for the January 6 trial will occur simultaneously with Mark Meadows' hearing to transfer his Georgia charges to Federal Court. There is more on the undying story of Jack Smith scraping Trump's Twitter DMs and who else had access to them. Turns out there's no way for Trump to get a pardon in Georgia until five years after his sentence ends. And we will again identify the unidentified in another edition of Trumple. B-Block (21:09) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Ron DeSantis now requires parents to sign permission slips or teachers can't call "Thomas" "Tommy." Jordan Peterson and Penguin take bad reviews and put them on the cover of his book (taking out the negative adjectives). And the judge who authorized the raid on the Marion County Record in Kansas has not only been retroactively overruled but it turns out she has a history of DUIs, one she apparently hid from the voters - and the judge who should have jailed her after the second DUI. (29:48) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Tomorrow will be the second anniversary of the day an extraordinary soul walked into my life. He was only here very briefly but I want you to meet and remember him and so I will again tell you the story of Mishu. “Is Academia Awash in Liberal Bias?” This is one of many recent headlines we see as the world grapples with a question that we've been debating for decades: are colleges and universities dominated by liberals? Over the past few years, charges that colleges and universities are “about Radical Left Indoctrination” have come from several quarters, including from the highest echelons of our government, making this a question that merits serious attention. I received the following from a WFTD reader, and it speaks to the two premiere universities in America and indeed the world . . . https://www.wordsfortheday.com/2023/06/dont-end-up-like-harvard/
Glenn Greenwald exposes the inherent bias written into various Artificial Intelligence apps ostensibly designed to provide impartial responses to inquiries, and Ryan (in for Dan) provides a couple of more examples. Also, the horrific shootings at Michigan State University left three students dead and hit home for Ryan. He details why the knee-jerk, emotional responses from Democrats always jump to the guns being at fault and not the deranged shooter himself.

Episode 3 - The Liberal Bias Boogeyman How did the right get their vice grip of the airwaves, all the while arguing that they were being silenced and censored by a liberal media? In this episode we look at the early history of American radio to reveal that censorship of far-right and progressive voices alike was once common on radio. And we learn how, in the post-war and Civil Rights period, the US government encouraged more diverse viewpoints on the airwaves — until it didn't. A talk with conflict resolution specialist Guy Burgess, who, along with his wife Heidi Burgess, run the project www.beyondintractability.org. Guy and Heidi wrote a paper in 2022 titled "Applying conflict resolution insights to the hyper‐polarized, society‐wide conflicts threatening liberal democracies." I talk with Guy about: how conflict resolution principles might be applied to U.S. polarization problems; the importance of addressing liberal-side contributions to polarization; the common objections people can have to seeing polarization as a problem that both sides must tackle; how some in the conflict resolution space may be hindered from helping by their own liberal bias and polarization; the Burgesses' ideas for what society must do to reduce polarization to more healthy levels, and more.Support the show

In this episode of Finding Common Battle Grounds, Josh, Ryan, and Tom explore whether there is a liberal bias in the mainstream media. We begin by detailing what we understand the mainstream media to be - major television networks ABC, NBC, and CBS, major newspapers and reporting agencies like Reuters, Associated Press, Newsweek, the New York times, and certain cable and radio stations. We note that there are different ways that bias can manifest in media - in how the news is reported and in what is considered important news. Josh argues that the news - at least political news - is reported with a left-leaning bias in mainstream media while Ryan argues that most non-political news is actually not biased in the mainstream media, even if there is a bias in what is considered important. We agree that journalists may be left-leaning even though many are still objective in their reporting. We also agree that bias is always relative - if you lean to the right, any media to the left will seem biased, and the inverse is true as well. Finally, we agree that MSNBC and Fox News are whores for money and viewers and that it would be ideal if everyone would consumer more middle-of-the-road media like that produced by the Wall Street Journal or BBC News.consume

10:10 - Moral Perception and Where Liberals & Conservatives Disconnect.More often than we realize, we want the same things, but frame the moral perception of the issue in a way that turns the other side off.13:00 - Acceptable Diversity vs Unacceptable Diversity"Let's include everyone...unless they think like 'the people over there'".14:49 - "The Social Purity Test" ExplainedThe grass-roots activists that are actually on the ground, tend to be far more pragmatic in their approach to change. While the "political hobbyists" are very tribal and loud, with much less of an idea of what is actually occurring in the real world. The less you engage, the more you tend to push the liberal or conservative purity test.17:05 - Is the Social / Digital Civil War Phony?Research shows that folks do not like social and political conflict. This means the conversations are not being had in reality. Instead, they are relegated to out-of-context bickering over text platforms like social media. Americans in general, may just not be very emotionally intelligent. Anger is okay, but we need channel it a much better way when it comes to our political and social concerns. Better mental health could be the answer.21:20 - Mental Health and How We CommunicateUnderstanding our emotions would greatly help with our political warfare. This needs to take place during childhood to better prepare our youth for adulthood and the disagreements and emotional diversity that they will face. 24:00 - Giving Our Youth Less Structure & More Responsibility Let's start having our young people communicate and work together at a much younger age in order to serve themselves and the community. Could giving children more "Free Play" lead to a healthier democracy? Forcing children to work together at a young age could teach healthy democracy at a much younger age.26:15 - Understanding Radical Thinkers, Fringe Groups, and Yes...Even Neo NazisTreating people like humans (even "the worst of the worst") is the best way to fight their ideas and change their minds. It should be common sense...but it isn't alway.30:20 - Using Positive Psychology to Heal Political PsychologySocial and behavioral synchrony. Getting people on the same wave length on something builds camaraderie, warm feelings, etc. There can be a spill over into political views if you start right here. Shared experience and joy goes a long way. 32:30 - We Are Loading Terms and Destroying LanguageSimply reframing a liberal argument with different language can and will get more conservatives on board...and visa versa. Even liberals can have issues understanding their own frameworks due to the language used. If you can reframe your dogma to achieve a goal...thats what needs to be done.38:00 - IdentityCould a form of "National Identity" heal our discourse? Maybe, but how do we get there when there is "so much inequality". We need to start by acknowledging the validity of the concerns of those we disagree with.42:20 - Objectivity and Facts"Facts" may not matter as much as we may think. As we get smarter, we get better at weaponizing true information to fit a narrative.45:35 - Dopamine What is it really doing vs what we are lead to believe it's doing?Mentioned Works:https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/contributors/dylan-selterman-phd"Free To Learn"- by Dr. Peter Gray"The All Or Nothing Marriage" - by Eli J. At this point, it’s outdated to refer to the media’s "liberal bias." For this podcast, Gianno shows how we’re no longer dealing with biased journalists; members of the mainstream media are now just Democrats with press passes, openly pushing a partisan agenda. As a result, fake news has become mainstream. Gianno discusses how this transition happened, the integrity of the press, and the state of journalism today with Fox News host Harris Faulkner, a six-time Emmy Award-winning journalist. “In their desire for groups to BE equal, Liberals have a bias towards PERCEIVING groups to be equal… Inequality must therefore always be explained through discrimination and prejudice, rather than evolved or genetic differences”Turi talks with Dr. Cory Clark about the origins of bias - why it is so ingrained in our thinking, its evolutionary uses, and whether bias (or ‘motivated reasoning') is equally shared by people on all sides of the political spectrum.Conservatives have historically got a terrible rap for being anti-science, creationists, climate change deniers… able to ignore objective facts that attack their world views.Liberals, on the other hand, are the party of empiricism - they are more educated, are more likely to trust experts, and make up the massive majority of scientists and academics themselves…And there's the rub. Because at the heart of the Liberal view is a fundamental structuring bias around equality. Liberals so desire to see equality in the world that they are blind to instances of true genetic or evolved differences. This is what Cory Clark calls the ‘Equalitarianism'Listen to hear Cory and Turi discuss:‘Equalitarianism', the liberal bias that underpins all othersTribalism and its evolutionary advantages‘Ideological Epistemology' - how we frame our ideas politicallyLiberal Bias in academiaWhether, despite warping research, Liberal Bias might be a good thing for the worldWhether there is an evolutionary purpose to our political differencesWorks cited include:Bo Winegard and his work on EqualitarianismRoy Baumeister and his work on wealth creators vs wealth distributors.Cory ClarkCory Clark is a Social Psychologist and a Visiting Scholar in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Matthew Sheffield fought against liberal bias in the news media for years. He grew up in a fundamentalist Mormon family, one of 10 children. His street preacher father watched CBS News. And in the late 90's Matthew started getting into blogging, as we called it then, mostly pointing out examples of media biased. He started a site called Rather Biased, inspired by CBS News' famous broadcaster. And in 2005 he and his brother started Newsbusters.A few weeks ago, Matthew wrote out a remarkable thread on Twitter, where he wrote that he “was part of a decades-long tradition of complaining about media elites being ‘unfair’ to conservative views.” And Sheffield doesn’t dismiss the notion of liberal bias in the media. “There is still much to that argument,” he wrote, “but eventually I saw that I was missing context.” After Sheffield went to work at the Washington Examiner, where he was the newspaper’s first online editor, he says he realized that “U.S. conservatives do not understand the purpose of journalism.” “I didn't understand that journalism is supposed to portray reality,” Sheffield wrote. The Examiner was the first place where Sheffield says he saw the kind of standards that differentiate “actual media and reporting institutions” — that may have inherent or even conscious bias — from right-wing websites for whom partisan bias is the north star, the guiding principle. “Truth for conservative journalists is anything that harms ‘the left.’ It doesn't even have to be a fact,” he wrote. “I eventually realized that most people who run right-dominated media outlets see it as their DUTY to be unfair and to favor Republicans because doing so would some how counteract perceived liberal bias.” “Most conservative media figures have no journalism training or desire to fact-check their own side,” he added. After his time at the Examiner, Sheffield oversaw the polling operation at The Hill newspaper, and has also been a staff reporter for Salon. Sheffield is writing a memoir about his upbringing and is host of a podcast called Theory of Change. He's also working on launching a new online venture which he says will be called Flux. Sheffield believes that much of the mainstream press doesn’t write empathetically enough about most conservative voters. “The tens of millions of people who vote Republican are not deplorable. They are misled,” he wrote. “And the mocking and tribalistic coverage that lefty media often engage in only makes things worse.”Outro music: "Californian Soil" by London Grammar Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/thelonggame. Amy Coney Barrett insists she's not racist and that her black children aren't "props." Though, she sits on a stolen seat belonging to a black woman, and she doesn't think that using "the N word" makes for a "hostile" workplace. Another survey proves that Republicons are very sick and troubled racists. We discuss the madness. ___________ BECOME A "TARABUSTER" PATRON: www.patreon.com/taradevlin ________________________ Want to Connect In between shows? At no time in U.S. history has higher ed faced so many simultaneous challenges as it does now. Race relations, social issues, the free speech debate, scandal, law enforcement challenges, Department of Education enforcement, a new Title IX regulation, and COVID-19. Higher education has been confronted with enterprise-wide threats due the coronavirus pandemic, which have become significantly more complex in light of the many other quickly evolving issues that test the resources of an institution. In this episode, Scott Schneider, joins me to discuss the complexity of higher ed's COVID-19 crisis in light of other rapidly developing events and the need to learn from the recent past to get ready for the near future. We also discuss how we might go about handling a scandal crisis from the perspective of in-house counsel.Media mentions:George Washington University Professor Who Lied About Being Black Resigns https://www.chronicle.com/article/george-washington-u-professor-who-lied-about-being-black-resigns.Is Academe Awash in Liberal Bias https://www.chronicle.com/article/is-academe-awash-in-liberal-biasFalwell Resigns Following Reports of Tryst. Another week in the United States of Serfs and Lords. America is in lockdown and Conservatives - on both sides of the aisle - continue to prove they're unfit to hold leadership positions in a modern nation. Biden comes out of hiding to beg our oligarch masters to not use coronavirus bailout money to inflate their stock prices through stock buybacks - for a year. So Twitler attacks him from the left by calling to put it into the emergency legislation. Colorodo Gov. Jared Polis ask a right winger for "ideas" on handling the crisis. So, of course, Jon Caldera responds with the same old, useless, right wing kiss up/kick down attacks on the working class. We discuss another week of madness.

Yoel and Mickey welcome Professor of Psychology and Politics John Jost from New York University to the podcast. Author of the most influential political psychology paper of the last two decades, John talks about the role of psychology in politics and the role of politics in psychology. Is it fair to characterize conservatives as dogmatic, rigid, and close-minded? Given replication failures, are conservatives indeed more attuned to negative stimuli in their environments? Does the description of conservatives as resistant to change applicable in the Trump era? Should social scientists be advocates/activists, neutral fact-finders, or something in between? Why is the dominance of liberals in social psychology (and academia more broadly) not a problem? Bonus: What is with all the homo-eroticism? Special Guest: John Jost.

Hayden Williams is physically attacked at UC Berkeley while recruiting members for the conservative group "Turning Point" and the whole thing is caught on video. Bill Gates explains why "clean energy" is not an accurate description. Senator Lindsey Graham promises to launch a new round of investigations to find out if FBI conspired against President Trump just days after the election.

Yoel and Mickey discuss two mini-controversies recently in the news: 1) Should equity, diversity, and inclusion statements be required from academic job candidates? Do they signal the liberal values of academia, and if so, is that a bad thing? 2) Are psychologists disproportionately likely to argue that free speech is in crisis on campus? If so, why? Bonus: Mickey describes an intimate product that he definitely does not own.
Looking at the recent election, Thom asks what the Republicans will do if hate and fear doesn't work for them anymore. Callers respond. ------ Thom reads from 'Mortal Republic- How Rome turned in Tyranny'. ------ Luke Vargas from Talk Media News always has tremendous headlines, the best headlines. ------ Thom reads from Bernie Sanders new book 'Where do we Go From Here?'. ------ Breakfast cereal and orange juice now has measureable amount of glyphosate, what could go wrong? ------ Alex Lawson from Social Security Works has been keeping up with the continued dismantling of the social safety net with fresh moves against Medicare.
It's surprising, enlightening and at times frustrating. Kelly and I are continually accused of being conservatives who are "in the tank" for Trump... AND..."left wingers" with "an obvious liberal bias". What's even more astonishing, we are often accused of such bias by BOTH sides on the SAME topic!

Union boss Trumka said he hadn't ruled out supporting Trump2020 and gets attacked by the teachers union leader Weingarten. More jobs = More union members. DUH! There was an interesting conversation around this on The View Yesterday. Now, typically I don’t watch The View, but, this was interesting. Here's the full clip of the convo.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlZ-1O-2-nIABC News suspended Brian Ross for his reporting of Donald Trump.Ross was suspended for four weeks without pay over the weekend. He had reported incorrectly that Trump, when he was still a candidate for president, had told Flynn to make contact with the Russians. Instead, Ross later said that Trump's instructions came when he was president-elect, not a candidate.I’m curious of what your thoughts are. I think the intent of many media outlets is to be fair. Certainly many come across on one side. Fox News as an example leans right. ABC would be considered more left. Or here in Canada, the Globe is more left and the Post more conservative. But, do you Agree or Disagree that there is a liberal bias in media? Or,are they fair? Or, it now people are getting their media sources from several spots? What are you seeing right now?Facebook:Kevin OlenickTwitter:@kevoleSoundcloud:@kevoleSpreaker:@kevoleInstagram:@kevolePatreon: Kevin OlenickAnd, I want to ask in this conversation. What about our Social Media.Facebook, Twitter? Is it more of a left wing/liberal bias?

OK, I’m conservative. No wait I’m liberal. Huh? Maybe I’m libertarian. This is the funny, much contrived, and funny conversation I have with myself – when people who try to label me.It get this a lot.A friend who identifies with the Republican Party will say to me, “you are so liberal.”A half-hour later, a friend who leans Democrat says, “you are such a conservative.”When I tell another friend about those two earlier conversations, that friend says, “you’re a libertarian.”And although I agree with Ron and Rand Paul on some things – I am no follower. In fact, I follow no one. Now, I love these reactions. It means I am waking up people. But granted, I like to challenge my friends’ beliefs – and see where they really stand. And that’s what you should be doing. But if you say to someone, “you are so liberal” or “Good God, you’re conservative” and you leave it there – most times you are trying to divide or denigrate someone – who doesn’t believe what you believe.
