The antibiotics that have saved humanity from extinction again and again are about to stop working. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are multiplying faster than science can keep up. It's estimated that these pathogens will kill 10 million of us a year by 2050 if we don't come up with effective treatment. Enter Dr Ana L. Santos of Rice University, Texas. Her team of microbiologists have developed microscopic robots which kill the bacteria that medicine can't. She tells Olly Mann about their groundbreaking research into nanobiotics and how drilling nanobots could turn the tide in the fight against aggressive infections. Some things are so tiny you can't see them under a normal microscope – think proteins and molecules. These are a thousandth of the size of the red blood cells running through your veins. We measure these things in nanometres where one nanometre is a billionth of a metre.   Scientists have some adventurous ideas harnessing things at the nanoscale - a field called nanotechnology.   Some ideas are realistic, others are still science fiction.   Dr Sophie Calabretto talks to Cosmos Magazine journalist Ellen Phiddian about nanotechnology, what's realistically possible and how on Earth you work with things this small.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For over 20 years Kevin Christopher has been honing his skills in Animation, Visual Effects and Editing. His passion for great storytelling and his unlikely background in architecture and engineering has brought a unique skillset to virtual production. As an award winning editor he knows what it takes to remove the words “fix it in post” from the production lexicon. Prior to serving as the Solutions Architect, and Post Production Supervisor Kevin spent years providing editorial services for clients such as Home Depot, Coca Cola, and Turner Classic Movies. Kevin has worked on film restorations of feature films as well as creating and designing DVD and Blu-Ray's for distribution. Kevin has created nDisplay setups for more than just virtual production. For M.O.T.R. (Millions of Tiny Robots) he created the Illuminarium Experience setup that ties 32 Disguise RX nodes and 12 Disguise VX4's to create a realtime rendered experience powered by Unreal Engine. Kevin's goal is to move much of VFX from Post production to Pre Production so that what's captured in camera is as dynamic as possible and allows the actors to feel as if they were in the environment, thus creating the most genuine performance possible. Today we're going to talk about viruses, those nasty microscopic opportunistic unemployed robots all around you, and why they make you sneeze.

Microrobots have been created and used to treat the most common form of pneumonia that infects patients in ICU. In experiments, currently carried out in mice at the University of California San Diego, the tiny robots swam around the lungs and delivered antibiotics that killed the disease-causing bacteria. The amount of antibiotics needed is a tiny fraction of the amount currently used to treat this infection intravenously. The robots are made from algae cells (this allows them to move) covered in antibiotic-filled nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are made with tiny spheres that are coated with the cell membranes of neutrophils – a type of white blood cell that fights infection and inflammation - making the microrobots more effective at fighting the lung infection. We hear from lead author Professor Joseph Wang about the tech that's allowed the team of nanoengineers to create these microrobots. Internet shutdowns in India – on what grounds are they allowed? Since 2012 there have been 683 full internet blackouts in India according to the internet shutdown tracker run by the Software Freedom Law Centre (SLFC). Many of these are done without following government rules. Now India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has only a week left to reveal the grounds on which it approves or imposes internet shutdowns in the country. The SFLC filed a lawsuit against the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and West Bengal, after internet shutdowns were ordered to prevent cheating during state exams. This is a common occurrence around the time of public exams across the country as stolen exam papers often appear on the internet. Now the Supreme Court has ruled that the protocols on which these decisions are made need to be made public. Tech reporter Emma Woollacott explains the massive impact of these shutdowns and lawyer Mishi Choudhary founder of the SFLC explains why they bought about the lawsuit. National Robotarium opens in Edinburgh Digital Planet's Hannah Fisher has been given access to the UK's first robotarium and reports on the eve of its opening for the programme. This episode was originally released June 24th, 2019.For episode 42, Geoff Moes (@ThallidTosser on Twitter), Nat Moes (@GrandpaBelcher), and Josh Chapple (@joshchapple) welcome back Andy Probasco (@tmdBrassMan) to talk about Mystic Forge, a free preview card from Core Set 2020, provided by Wizards of the Coast! Here’s the timestamped table of contents for your listening ease and enjoyment:00:28 – Surprise! It’s Mystic ForgeTotal runtime: 33:05 “I Can Build ANY Machine.” There are a lot of exciting cards in Core Set 2020 (better known as M20), but there are two I left design notes for that specifically mentioned Vintage. Scheming Symmetry I was intrigued in because a combo deck could potentially exist built around the now six available one-black-mana topdeck tutors. And my note on our preview card was that “If this hits Vintage, it will do something new and fun.” We brought Andy “The Brass Man” Probasco back to the show to help us figure out what those new and fun things might be. He’s the owner of The Mana Drain and has been a participant on the Vintage Super League, and as winner of the most recent Team Serious Invitational with Death’s Shadow Survival, is one of the Vintage format’s more creative players and deck builders. Mystic Forge has a lot of potential as a card-advantage engine in Mishra’s Workshop decks of all kinds. The question, as always, is what do you cut from an existing list to make room for a card that doesn’t do anything to your opponent on its own? You could trade one turn in the early game to play Mystic Forge and potentially accelerate all of your future plays, but that gives your opponent an undisrupted turn either free of disruption (like Sphere of Resistance or Phyrexian Revoker) or free of threat (like Arcbound Ravager or Walking Ballista). It’s a risk. In today’s metagame, Mystic Forge also competes directly at mana cost and some utility with Karn, the Great Creator, who not only disrupts the opponent but also serves as card advantage. But Mystic Forge has so many exciting benefits. Many Workshop decks and Eldrazi decks are built with fairly low mana costs relative to the amount of mana they can produce between Workshop itself, Ancient Tomb, Eldrazi lands, as well as Moxes, Sol Ring, and Mana Crypt. If you get Mystic Forge into play, your next turn might include casting three or four cards from the top of your library, and you can exile a card you can’t or don’t want to cast. With enough mana, you can cast cards even through Karn or Collector Ouphe, potentially allowing you to overwhelm your opponent. This is helpful whether you’re playing more lock pieces or attacking with creatures or trying to combo off. After we talked, Andy proposed this list, which is based on current Karn Workshops builds and is happy to play whatever role its opening hand and the game situation gives it (of course, none of the lists presented here are tested, and your metagame may vary, so good luck!). Karn's Forge Business (34)4 Mystic Forge3 Manifold Key4 Karn, the Great Creator4 Sensei’s Divining Top3 Helm of Awakening4 Serum Powder1 Chalice of the Void3 Arcbound Ravager4 Foundry Inspector4 Walking BallistaMana Sources (26)4 Mishra’s Workshop1 Black Lotus1 Mana Crypt4 Ancient Tomb4 Grim Monolith1 Mana Vault1 Mox Emerald1 Mox Jet1 Mox Pearl1 Mox Ruby1 Mox Sapphire2 City of Traitors1 Tolarian Academy1 Mox Opal1 Lotus Petal1 Sol Ring | Sideboard (15)1 Manifold Key1 Time Vault13 Other Cards If you can use Sensei’s Divining Top or a similar effect to further manipulate the top card of your library, you can easily get around lands blocking the top of your deck. Top also goes infinite with Foundry Inspector to draw your library. Together with the variety of mana producing artifacts, including Grim Monolith and Voltaic Key, there might be a Mystic Forge combo deck that aims to play most of its library on turn one to some great effect. Potentially this deck wins with Aetheflux Reservoir or, my favorite, Goblin Charbelcher. This could be the basis for a Krark Clan Ironworks-type deck in Vintage and potentially other formats. Aetherflux Forge Business (36)4 Mystic Forge3 Aetherflux Reservoir3 Krark Clan Ironworks3 Manifold Key4 Karn, the Great Creator4 Helm of Awakening4 Sensei’s Divining Top1 Engineered Explosives1 Spine of Ish Sah1 Myr Retriever4 Scrap Trawler4 Foundry InspectorMana Sources (25)1 Mox Emerald1 Mox Jet1 Mox Pearl1 Mox Ruby1 Mox Sapphire4 Mox Opal4 Grim Monolith1 Black Lotus1 Sol Ring1 Mana Crypt1 Lotus Petal1 Mana Vault1 Lion’s Eye Diamond1 Lotus Petal4 Mishra’s Workshop1 Tolarian Academy | Sideboard (15)1 Manifold Key1 Time Vault1 Aetherflux Reservoir1 Goblin Charbelcher11 Other Cards But maybe you just try to run Mystic Forge in a Tiny Robots list and try to cast a bunch of tiny creatures that will attack anything in sight. You can cast Walking Ballista and Hangarback Walker for 0 to move them off the top of your library, and it might be better to have Chief of the Foundry main deck to get some value out of that play. Touring London will help players find a quality turn one: a hand with Mishra’s Workshop, or an early Mystic Forge or Karn, or both. Seeing seven cards at a time and picking your favorites will make a big difference in these kinds of decks, which are so reliant on opening hands and won’t be able to as easily fix their situation as a blue deck with multiple Preordains and other cheap cantrips. When it comes to this new era of colorless decks, mulligan often and mulligan with intention. And the Hi-Res For our free preview this time, I also had the time and forethought to ask Wizards about the high-resolution art from Titus Lunter. And they provided! So here’s the hi-res version of Mystic Forge from M20 for your eyeballs to enjoy (and click to download wallpaper). Questions for Discussion Will Mystic Forge be a hit in Vintage? What about in another format? It’s definitely legal in a bunch of them, and Legacy has a bunch of Sol lands to help play it. Did any of you play X-Men Legends games, where the character Forge is played by Lou Diamond Phillips? And you’d interact with him and he’d say lines like “I can build ANY machine” like he’s real smug about it? That was great. He was right too. He built a lot of really useful stuff in that series of games. Conclusion Thanks for listening! And thanks to The Brass Man for joining us on this special episode. Guy Glass is one of Israel’s e-commerce pioneers. He founded StyleRiver, the first fashion e-commerce site in Israel. As COO and CTO, Guy needed to address order fulfillment problems which led him to search for an economic warehouse robotics solution that offered adaptive processes that can work with their existing infrastructure and flexible enough to handle sales spikes.  In order to get the solution to his problem, Guy partnered with Dr. Ilan Cohen and Danny Frishman and they founded Caja Robotics in 2014. Caja Robotics is a visionary software and robotics expert that is changing the world of warehouse logistics through robotic fulfillment. Shortly after the foundation of the company, Reuven Della-Torre joined Caja Robotics and he currently serves as its CTO. Reuven is an experienced CTO who has expertise in robotics, media content provision, telecom, web, and mobile markets. He has an in-depth knowledge of autonomous guided robots, warehousing, and video streaming communication. In this episode… The fast-paced growth in e-commerce has created a new problem for retail brands and logistics companies - warehousing and labor. They worry about maximizing their space, saving labor costs, expanding, and contracting their operations in order to meet demands. And one of the things that have proven to be incredibly helpful in addressing this problem is by turning to automation and robotics.  However, automation and robotics itself poses a different set of problems. How can these companies automate their 20k+ square feet warehouse using robots in a cost-effective way that is flexible enough to not rejig of their entire set up and processes? Caja Robotics has found a way to make automation and robotics work for multiple companies and they have successfully helped them with realizing their robotic fulfillment solution.  Listen to this episode of the Inspired Insider as Dr. Jeremy Weisz talks with Guy Glass and Reuven Della-Torre of Caja Robotics about how to manage a large warehouse efficiently using robots. Guy and Reuven will be discussing the idea, motivation, and funding behind Caja Robotics, how the Caja robots work, the problems they solve, and why their clients love them. Stay tuned.

Advancements in robots have already changed our lives in many ways.  Most of the time you don’t even notice it, but automated robotic systems have added efficiency and speed to countless industries.  Researcher at Cornell University have developed what they say is a first of its kind robot.  They move via laser impulses and are small enough that they are right at home next to microorganisms that already live inside of us. The hope of these tiny robots is that they may be capable of doing things that even a well trained doctor simply can’t. Itai Cohen the Lead author of the study joined Tom on the show.

Dr. Volodymyr Koman, a postdoc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), discusses his work with cell-sized robots and explains their many possible uses in our ever-increasing technological world.   Dr. Koman received a BS in Applied Physics from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, then an MS in Photonics from Ghent University, before moving on to earn and complete his Ph.D. in Photonics at the prestigious Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne. Dr. Koman has a particular fascination with cell-sized robots and his work is focused in this area currently.   Dr. Koman discusses their cell-sized robots and how they arrived at the name of ‘colloidal nanoelectronic state machines' for their groundbreaking tiny robots. He describes state machines as simple robots with several states on board, essentially state machines that are doing computations on board of the particle. Dr. Koman describes his team's fascination with nature, which caused them to pose questions such as, can we think like nature? Their work takes the question into the test phase, as they seek to make advanced cell-size ‘state machines' or robots that can form tissues and create bigger structures.    These minuscule robots can sense their environment, store data, and complete computational tasks. They consist of tiny electronic circuits comprised of two-dimensional materials, riding along atop minuscule particles known as colloids. Dr. Koman explains how these tiny state machines can communicate with each other while completing tasks. He expounds upon their vision for the future of these infinitesimal robots.   Dr. Koman provides details on the structures and circuits of their tiny state machines, and how they hope to effectively allow them to transform and change shape. These machines will look very different from our current machines and from our cells, Dr. Koman states.    The cellular-size technology expert provides further information on uses within the bloodstream. One particular area of expansion for the technology could be for diagnostics. By combining these tiny objects with complex circuitry, it may open up possibilities for the creation of devices that could be utilized to carry out diagnostic journeys into the human digestive system. Colloids can exist in environments and move about in ways that other materials simply cannot, which makes them particularly attractive for specialized tasks. Dr. Koman talks about the future of robotics and his team's outlook for their advanced tiny robots. From bloodstream to tissue, the uses and possibilities are nearly limitless.
