In this episode of the Ride AI Podcast, we sit down with Ali Kashani, CEO and co-founder of Serve Robotics, the company bringing AI-powered sidewalk delivery robots—with googly eyes—to city streets. Ali shares the origin story behind Serve's charming, efficient bots and explains why using a two-ton car to deliver a two-pound burrito simply doesn't make sense. We dive into the rationale behind sidewalk robots versus road-based vehicles, the surprising stats about food delivery distances, and how Serve's robots—some capable of 40 miles on a single charge—are redefining last-mile logistics. Ali also explains how the company maintains Level 4 autonomy with human-in-the-loop oversight and the unique challenges of operating in pedestrian-dense environments.Hear how Serve's robots navigate public spaces with body language, what goes into scaling to cities like Dallas, Miami, and soon Atlanta, and why the future of delivery may depend less on bikes and more on scalable automation. Plus, Ali reveals unexpected revenue streams—from ad campaigns on robots to software licensing deals—and shares his dream cities for future deployment (spoiler: New York is high on the list).

This move, alongside similar initiatives in Wuhan, highlights significant investments and competition among companies like Baidu, Pony.ai, and Tesla, while raising concerns about job displacement and regulatory challenges. The AI community has embraced unconventional benchmarks like creating videos of Will Smith eating spaghetti to assess AI's creative and generative capabilities, contrasting with traditional, structured tests. These benchmarks highlight AI's ability to handle complex, abstract tasks but also raise questions about the validity, reliability, and ethical implications of such evaluations. A minor collision between a Waymo robotaxi and a Serve Robotics delivery robot in Los Angeles has ignited discussions about the safety and legal implications of autonomous vehicles. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, highlights the complexities and challenges of deploying autonomous systems in real-world environments, raising questions about liability, regulatory compliance, and public trust. Alibaba has announced a major price reduction for its large language models to enhance competition in the AI market, making advanced AI technologies more accessible to small and medium-sized businesses. This move aims to democratize AI, foster innovation, and strengthen Alibaba's position against domestic and international tech giants. The year 2024 was marked by a series of viral events, from AI marketing failures and Google's controversial AI Overviews to the cultural impact of Charli XCX's album Brat and the successful return of the Summer Olympics, highlighting the complexities and influence of digital culture. These moments underscored the importance of human oversight in AI, the enduring appeal of live events, and the rapid rise and fall of internet fame. In 2024, Elon Musk's political involvement and ambitious promises for Tesla, including autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots, kept him in the spotlight. Despite frequent delays and regulatory challenges, Musk's vision continues to captivate investors, significantly impacting Tesla's market valuation and future prospects.

Serve Robotics CEO Dr. Ali Kashani joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce the expansion of the company's delivery operations into Koreatown. This move is part of Serve's long-term plan to broaden its geographic reach in Los Angeles and across the U.S. Koreatown was selected for its dense and vibrant commercial hub, growing residential community, and well-maintained sidewalk infrastructure, which are ideal for robotic delivery. This coverage expansion follows ongoing collaboration with the Los Angeles city government and local stakeholders. In preparation for scaling up its fleet for future expansions, Serve has announced the signing of an expanded supply agreement with Ouster, Inc. This agreement will equip Serve's next-generation robots with the latest-generation lidar sensors, providing equipment for 2,000 robots. Welcome to Episode 63  of The Robot Report Podcast, which brings conversations with robotics innovators straight to you. Join us each week for discussions with leading roboticists, innovative robotics companies, and other key members of the robotics community. In today's episode, Steve and Mike interview robotics innovator Esben Østergaard, CEO of Reinvest Robotics and cofounder of Universal Robots. We discuss the potential impact of the pending EU AI Act and Machinery Directive. These directives are likely to impact the growth of AI startup in the EU and burden them with rules that will hamper innovation. Esben offers his thoughts about innovation and how successful robotics startups need a competitive playing field to be successful. Could this be the death of robotic and AI innovation in the EU? Listen in to learn more. Here's a link to Esben's recent blog about the impact of the EU AI Act and Machinery Directive. “The approach of the current machinery directive is sufficient. The problem is with governance. We recommend focusing on ensuring that products on the market actually comply with the current EU law, not creating new regulations,” said Østergaard. Steve and Mike also review the latest robotics news stories from the last week, including the following stories reported on The Robot Report: - Robotics Summit & Expo 2022 call for speakers - MiR is building autonomous pallet jacks - Knightscope IPO taking security robots public - Serve Robotics closes $13 million funding round - Nuro, Waymo bring autonomous deliveries to California

Are food delivery robots just a trend, or do they have the potential to replace humans in the future? In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney discusses the slow and steady rise of food delivery robots, and how the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the demand for contactless delivery. She talks about their features, limitations and some of the companies that have ventured into the space. The team share their thoughts about whether they will replace humans and posit that the four-to-six wheeled robots are not just a passing trend. Also, in this episode, Mira talks about a new line of vegan sashimi from the online retailer, distributor and wholesaler, GTFO It's Vegan. Available on the company's website, the new line includes tuna, salmon, sailfish and calamari — just without the fish. While it is not the first vegan sashimi, the company says it has the most extensive line of offerings in the US market. The team wonder who the vegan sashimi's target audience is and whether they would try it.Read the full articles here: How COVID-19 Gave Rise to Food Delivery RobotsGTFO It's Vegan Introduces the Most Extensive Line of Vegan SashimiFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured
