In this week's episode, Elena shares insights from the very beginning of her return to structured training after a true three-month off-season, including what's helping her rebuild consistency, how she's thinking about early Boston Marathon goals, and why maintaining joy in her routine matters so much. We then shift to Katie's turkey trot 5K at eight months pregnant: why she decided to race, how she approached a hilly, unfamiliar course at a “smooth tempo” pace, and what she learned about managing her competitive side, listening to feel over data, and reframing expectations while running in pregnancy. We close with a listener question on mental health, postpartum recovery, and movement during any planned time off, along with Katie's framework for setting realistic expectations, maintaining identity, and focusing on a healthy long-term return to sport. Even though T.J. and Amy have yet to be invited on one, apparently “Cousin Walks” are all the rage and have been for years now. Ever notice a group of family members, one-by-one disappear for a little while before Thanksgiving dinner? Maybe they said they’re “getting some ice," or “walking the dog," but what they’re actually doing is getting high. In fact, it’s become such a phenomenon, the cousin walk has been credited with creating what’s now become known as “Green Wednesday," one of the busiest days for marijuana dispensaries in this country.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Happy Thanksgiving!! This holiday season, the internet splits between overpriced hair extensions, a luxury grocery store, and…wait for it…skin care for kids. Of course we have opinions AND a little inside scoop. (Sorry, Chrissy, Danielle refuses to be a victim.) While the internet melts down, we battle a few personal issues of our own, slightly TMI, obviously!! But it's the hot girls who have stomach problems, right? We give you a full Disney recap, including a brand-new bit that, yes, we WILL beat into the ground, plus a slightly controversial drink convo. Curious to know your thoughts?! And let's be real, after all her running, Brooke definitely has a turkey trot in her future, while Danielle probably never retires from Blackout Wednesday. Happy Thanksgiving!Kylie and Justine start by discussing their unique Canadian Thanksgiving tradition celebrated in October, which involves a feast with maple syrup and everyone wearing "Canadian tuxedos."They then dive into the history of Turkey Trots, the popular Thanksgiving Day races, noting the first one in Buffalo, New York, in 1896 as the oldest continuous footrace in North America. They share numerous personal "running scared" stories including a protein shake mistake and a grand slam breakfast gone terribly wrong! They also talk about other common American Thanksgiving traditions, culminating with an experiment of tasting pickle-flavored Pepsi combos. Learn that the idea of gratitude and giving thanks is an ancient concept for mankind and is expressly elevated in the Bible.Review how days of thanksgiving were originally commemorated in the English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts, with the English dissenters, the Pilgrims, having the most influential celebrations. In the colonial era, Thanksgiving celebrations were centered on specific events and circumstances and accordingly occurred at different times. As Americans united against British tyranny, they made continental-wide proclamations through the Continental Congress, but again, they were tied to specific events and times.President George Washington issued the first two Thanksgiving Proclamations under the Constitution.Sarah Josepha Hale's drive to create a uniform, nationwide celebration was embraced by Lincoln and his successors, and it became firmly fixed to the Fourth Thursday of November under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.Feasts, running, football, parades, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday all flow from this powerful day of gratitude.Highlights include the Bible, Thessalonians 5:16-18, Colossians 2:7, Psalm 100:4, Colossians 4:2, Psalm 92, Philippians 4:6, King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth Anne Boleyn, Church of England, John Calvin, Puritans, Common Book of Prayers, King James I, Pilgrims, Mayflower, Plymouth England, Plymouth Harbor Massachusetts, Mayflower Compact, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Samoset, Squanto, Wampanoag, William Bedford, Thanksgiving commemoration, Melanie Kirkpatrick, Thanksgiving The Holiday at the Heart of the American Experience, William Bradford, Berkeley Plantation a/k/a Berkeley Hundred, The Margaret, John Woodlief, Jamestown, the Starving Time, Chief Opechancanough, Massacre of 1622, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New Amsterdam, First Continental Congress, Second Continental Congress, Day of Humiliation Fasting and Prayer (1776), Henry Laurens, Thanksgiving Day Proclamation (1777), Battle of Saratoga, Thomas McKean, Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer (December 18, 1781), George Washington, James Madison, Elias Boudinot, Aedanus Burke, Thomas Tudor Tucker, Federalist Party, Anti-Federalists, Peter Silvester, Roger Sherman, Articles of Confederation, Continental Association, Constitution, William Samuel Johnson, Ralph Izard, Washington Thanksgiving Day Proclamation (October 3, 1789 for November 26, 1789), Whiskey Rebellion, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Letter, James Madison, First Amendment, War of 1812, Abraham Lincoln, Sarah Josepha Hale, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Northwood: A Tale of New England, Vassar College, domestic science, Ladies' Magazine, Godey's Lady's Book, Civil War, William Seward, Andrew Johnson, Lincoln Thanksgiving Proclamation (October 3, 1863 and October 24, 1864), President Franklin Delano Roosevelt a/k/a FDR, National Retail Dry Goods Association, Franksgiving, Allen Treadway, Earl Michener, FDR Thanksgiving Speech (1938), President Lyndon Baines Johnson, Johnson Thanksgiving Speech (1963), President John F. Send us a textEpisode OverviewHappy Thanksgiving week! On The Own It Show, Justin Roethlingshoefer shares ten simple, powerful habits to enjoy the feast, family, and football—without the bloat, sluggishness, or sleep crash that derails your momentum into December. This is a stewardship-first approach: stabilize circadian rhythm and blood sugar, support detox pathways, protect HRV and sleep, and anchor the day with gratitude so you roll into the holidays energized.Episode HighlightsFoundation (Habits 1–3)Morning Light + Movement — 10–15 min outside (walk, breathwork, easy cardio) to anchor circadian rhythm and prime VO₂.Hydration Before Celebration — 20–30 oz water + electrolytes on waking; keep fluids steady all day.Breathwork Bookends — 2 minutes AM & PM (2 nasal inhales, 1 mouth exhale) + gratitude to lower stress and steady HRV.Food, Rhythm & Energy (Habits 4–6) 4) Protein-First Strategy — Eat a protein-heavy breakfast; at the feast, lead with protein to curb spikes and cravings. 5) Walk 5 Before / 5 After — Mini-walks around meals improve insulin sensitivity and fight food-coma. 6) Create an Eating Window — Finish food ≥3 hours before bed to protect sleep quality and next-day energy.Sleep & Recovery (Habits 7–8) 7) Block Blue Light After Dinner — Dim overheads, use lamps/candles; blue-light glasses if screens are on. 8) Limit Alcohol — If you drink, do it earlier and sparingly; stop after dinner to safeguard deep sleep.Mindset & Movement (Habits 9–10) 9) Get Outside: Walk / Play / Breathe — Family walk, backyard football, light sun = mood up, lymph moving. 10) Gratitude Is the Anchor — Name 3 specific gratitudes (high–low–buffalo); gratitude reliably supports HRV and calm.Sample Thanksgiving Day Flow (Justin's Template)AM: Open blinds, light + walk, 2–3 min breath + gratitude, hydrate, optional Turkey Trot.Feast (~4–5 pm): Lead with protein & fiber, walk 5 before/after, desserts inside your 3-hr pre-bed cutoff.Evening: Dim lights / glasses on, no alcohol after dinner, 2–3 min breath + gratitude, lights-out on schedule.Action StepsPick 2–3 habits to lock in this week (e.g., AM light, protein-first, 3–2–1 wind-down).Share your Turkey Trot, family walk, blue-light setup, or gratitude stack and tag Justin.Remember: This is separation season—small, consistent reps compound into January.Subscribe & Listen to The Own It Show➡︎ YouTube: @justinroethlingshoefer ➡︎ Apple Podcasts: Search “The Own It Show — Justin Roethlingshoefer” ➡︎ Spotify: Search “The Own It Show — Justin Roethlingshoefer”ResourcesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/justinroethlingshoeferLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/justin-roethlingshoeferCoaching & Speaking: See links in Justin's YouTube/Instagram bioThanksgiving health tips, holiday HRV, circadian rhythm, hydration before celebration, protein first, walking after meals, blue light blocking, alcohol sleep disruption, gratitude HRV, VO2 max holiday, Own It Show, Justin Roethlingshoefer#ThanksgivingHealth #HydrationBeforeCelebration #ProteinFirst #WalkBeforeAfter ===========================Subscribe and Listen to the Own It Show HERE:➡︎ YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@justinroethlingshoefer➡︎ Apple Podcasts:https://apple.co/3KCyN3j➡︎ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3F58Ez4lbIKQ6kMu2pfpIG===========================Resources:⚡️CHECK OUR PROGRAMS: https://ownitcoaching.com/programs/⚡️BOOK: https://thepowerofownershipbook.com/=========================== Connect with Justin Roethlingshoefer on Social Media:➡︎ linkedin.com/in/justin-roethlingshoefer➡︎https://www.instagram.com/justinroeth/?hl=en
