Student underachievement occurs when students' day-to-day class performance is lower than their test scores predict it should be. We read a review of research that shows the causes of underachievement can vary widely. Still, it gives teachers some useful starting points when trying to help a student reach their full potential. Later, we discuss some recent coverage of AI and student cheating. We reflect on how student use of artificial intelligence - whether or not it is teacher-approved - may sit in relation to our classroom values.

So it's crucial to set realistic and personalised goals. It's important that we redefine our sense of achievement in terms of personal development, fulfilment and the impact that we make. Rather than the external validation or societal standards. What's your own idea of success? Stop and look at what you see as success and change it if needed. Make sure your goals aren't someone else's goals.Embrace your journey. Act for the sake of the action itself, not for the fruits of your actions. The true magic lies in the day-to-day moments.Check in with your goals and make sure they are realistic.Practise gratitude regularly. Can you tell that dyslexia is my current hyper-focus? Jen is the Founding Director of REED Charitable Foundation, which is committed to putting an end to the literacy crisis and ensuring all children learn to read, write and spell by providing financially accessible, best-in-class structure literacy training - known as Orton-Gillingham - to all teachers.    Jen first learned about dyslexia when her son Reed was diagnosed after a long, emotional struggle to figure out why reading was so difficult for him. As she dove deep into the research to find her son the right kind of intervention, Jen discovered there was a literacy training program that was not only ideal for dyslexic students but also the best instruction for all kids learning to read, only for some reason it was not being used in schools. Ever since this discovery, Jen has made it her mission to provide this literacy training to as many teachers as she possibly can, something she knows firsthand has the power to transform lives. I don't think there is one parent who doesn't worry about their child's future when they are struggling in school. It can be hard to get to the bottom of why they are struggling, is it laziness, the school, learning challenges or maybe you think it's your fault; you aren't pushing them hard enough? My guest, former underachiever, Alex Hargrove, is talking about how he turned his underachievement in school around and how you can help your child to do the same! In this episode, we talk about: Gifted children and how they often underachieve and why How to get your kids interested in school and learning Why your child is underachieving The remedy to underachievement For a free chapter of Alex's book, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. Alex turned his life around to the point where he is now the co-founder of a multi-million dollar start up: NetLaw (https://www.netlawgroup.com) - serving also as its CTO and as a member of its board. Alex graduated with honours from Washington & Lee School of Law in 2011. He practiced trusts and estates at Hargrove Madden LLP upon graduating and quickly found a passion for using technology to make attorneys, like himself, more efficient; and their services, more accessible. Alex designed and developed Hargrove Madden's Online Practice Platform, which generated over a hundred thousand dollars revenue in a single quarter and garnered the American Bar Association's 2012 eLawyering Award for innovative delivery of legal services only three months after going live. Levering that success, he worked closely with the founders to draft a business plan that helped secure the first $1 million in seed funding for NetLaw. The story of how Alex turned his life around, and how parents and students themselves can do the same is the focus of his book "Reversing Underachievement: A Practical Guide for Parents of Underachieving Gifted Children" available at Amazon https://amzn.to/2WxEJVX Contact information: Email: alex@netlaw.com Phone Number: 904-521-7697 Social Media: Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/netlawgroup/ Website - https://www.netlaw.com/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/HargroveAlex LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexhargrove/ Thanks for listening! The general belief is that as a species, we are first, human. However, the more we move through our societal constructs, we find ourselves forced to identify with specific groups. Our life experience has taught us the name of that force, and it's called racism/white supremacy. In episode 019, we discuss the challenges with associating with groups, and how the over-identification of that group ultimately leads to further conflict, and apathy.

There is a lot of reason to believe that the number is higher. Men who have experienced sexual abuse in their past are very likely to experience these issues: Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Alcoholism and drug abuse. Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. Problems in intimate relationships. Underachievement at school and at work. Bottom line is - Men don’t like to talk about it. But maybe we should. How Your Parent’s Alcoholism Affects Your Marriage

Adult Children of Alcoholics — did you know that was a thing? ACOA’s are what we call them for short. If you’re an ACOA it means you had at least one parent with a history of alcoholism, or possibly even a grandparent. The issues you faced as a child can continue to affect the entire family, including the way you relate to others in your life today. Background to ACOA An alcoholic parent or caregiver affects the entire family. Their addiction, the way alcohol makes them behave, their absences and mood swings will all have an impact on you growing up. Being raised in this kind of environment means each family member has to learn to adapt and react to the alcoholic's behavior. You have to learn strategies to cope with the chaotic family environment. These coping strategies often stay with the children into adult life and affect how you may now relate to others as an adult. An ACOA can therefore show unhelpful ways of relating to other people, based on the way they had to relate to people as a child. This includes issues such as an excessive need for control, over-reliance on the opinion of others, emotional distance, lack of trust and difficulties being open and vulnerable. These are all strategies which may have helped them survive in a household with an alcoholic parent but as adults lead to "rigid, controlling behaviors that interfere with individual growth... and the formation of healthy relationships[i]”. ACOAs can also show personal problems caused by the difficulties in their family of origin, including[ii] : Substance abuse Mood disorders such as depression Low self-esteem Underachievement in work/education Alcoholism’s Effects on Marriage So your parent’s alcohol struggles can continue to affect you long after you leave the family home. Let’s look at how this specifically relates to marriage. Attachment is Impacted by Alcoholism As a young child, having alcoholic parents affects the attachment bond you have with your parent, which goes on to form a blueprint of all future relationships the child will have[iii]. Alcoholic parents often display erratic and inconsistent parenting, sometimes being loving and supportive, other times being absent, rejecting the child's needs or even being abusive. This leads to an "insecure" attachment style between parent and child, where the child deeply desires love and affection from their parent but doesn't always find it, leading them to believe they are not worthy of love and support from others. This attachment style continues into adulthood and affects the ACOA's adult relationships, including marriage. A much higher proportion of ACOA have insecure attachment styles as adults than in the normal population[iv]. Because their parents were so inconsistent, the ACOA has learned that they cannot rely on or trust the people they love the most.  "As a result, COAs learn from an early age not to trust people and experience persistent fears of abandonment. Thus, although ACOAs may desire love and intimacy, they are likely to be afraid that relationships in their adult lives will be as hurtful as their early relationships[v]". Reading that quote closely you can see the fear that is embedded into one’s belief system based on what you experienced as a child. It often creates insecure attachment. Insecure attachment as an adult is strongly linked to marital problems, including[vi]: Lower intimacy Increased conflict and poor conflict resolution skills Lower stability Less displays of emotion and vulnerability Satisfaction with Marriage These issues are bound to affect the quality of the marriage. A study in 2008[vii] interviewed 634 newlywed couples for the first 4 years of their marriage. A link was found between parental alcoholism and marital satisfaction, but it was dependent on gender: husbands only reported lower marital satisfaction if their mother had been alcoholic, and wives only had lower satisfaction if their fathers had been alcoholic.

The alarming underachievement of African Caribbean boys in British schools and abroad in comparison to other groups is highlighted in Dr. Janet Graham's book. The author adopts an historical perspective to compare West Indian children who arrived in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s (many labelled as ESN) (Coard 1971) to problems faced by black boys in today's classrooms. Dr. Graham also explores the impact of globalisation, population movement, government policies and diversity on black boys’ education provision in inner city schools in Britain. She investigates masculinity, subcultures, peer group pressures and exclusion from school and their impact on black boys education. The Institutional Focus Study sets the context for the empirical study and provides a perspective from voices of black boys in one inner London school to find out what they think about school, learning, subcultures, peer group pressures and teachers. As a contrast teachers’ views of the boys are also provided. This book will be of interest to educationalists, teachers, students; parents, school management and government bodies interested in race, diversity, achievement and want to bring about change to improve life chances. We'll be so enthralled in what we're doing that we forget to go to the toilet or we forget to eat.”Annie is an ICF-accredited executive and ADHD coach from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Her late diagnosis at 49 was a profoundly life-changing moment, and represented a missing link after years of “underachieving”, observing her high-performing clients surpass her and not being able to figure out why. Since learning more about her ADHD, being coached intensively, and gaining professional ADHD coaching development, Annie wholeheartedly believes that ADHD can be an ‘adhdvantage'. She believes that while you might have ADHD for life, ADHD doesn't need to be a life sentence. While Annie has been coaching for over 8 years, she is one of New Zealand's first executive ADHD coaches, with her own practice, as well as working with a recently launched ADHD-centric service for New Zealanders called @beehyve.health .Annie and I talk about some of the unique experiences of getting a late diagnosis as a Gen-Xer. We also talk about the nagging feeling of underachievement and missed potential that so many of us experienced in life and some of the coaching strategies she uses with her clients. We also talk about energy management and productivity and making sure we're taking care of ourselves as we age.And while ADHD is widely considered a deficiency in attention, she likes to remind people of the Māori definition of ADHD — aroreretini — which means “attention goes to many things.” Website: annieromanos.comInstagram: @theadhdvantage Episode edited by E Podcast ProductionsFind the transcript of this episode at www.womenandadhd.com/transcripts This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.
