It's Die Hard in a museum…with a monster!Hyams Hive rise up! This week, Phil and Liam take a field trip to visit THE RELIC, Peter Hyams' expertly directed 1997 horror flick. They are accompanied on their scientific expedition by special guest Brandon Streussnig, one of the most influential and entertaining film writers around! After experimenting with psychotropic drugs while on a trip to South America, anthropologist John Whitney makes an alarming discovery, and attempts to prevent the return of several crates of research material to the US. Weeks later, the crates arrive and are sent to their intended destination at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago - an area that is suddenly beset with a series of grisly murders. As detective Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore) investigates, he and evolutionary biologist Dr. Margot Green (Penelope Ann Miller) come to the horrifying realization that a literal monster is now on the loose…and that they, and dozens of other citizens, are now trapped inside the museum along with the marauding beast! The guys start by discussing the career and filmography of director/shooter Peter Hyams, before moving into a detailed conversation about the origins and evolution of the action-horror subgenre. They delve deep into the film's myriad connections to the original 1988 classic in the ‘Die Hard DNA' section – but there's a big surprise in store for Phil later in the episode! The lads then get more specific about the film's two stars and the quality of the Stan Winston-designed monster, before wrapping things up with the Die Hard Oscars and the Double Jeopardy Trivia Quiz!THE RELIC trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vps9rpCHJFM At the time of release, THE RELIC is streaming on PlutoTV in the US and is available to rent or buy on Prime Video, YouTube, Apple/iTunes, Fandango, and all the usual platforms! Brandon's article on Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning can be found here. ARTICLE ON JOHN WICK 4 FROM THEWRAP.COM Final 'John Wick 4' Trailer Has Keanu Reeves Facing Off Against Action Movie Royalty Lionsgate has dropped its third and final trailer for "John Wick: Chapter 4." The Keanu Reeves-led action franchise is the brightest bright spot on Lionsgate's theatrical slate and their most obvious hope for a 2023 breakout. To those in the know, the likes of Chinese action-god Donnie Yen (also seen by Americans in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," "Shanghai Knights" and "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage") and direct-to-DVD and VOD action king Scott Adkins (also seen by American theatergoers in "Doctor Strange" and "Expendables 2") qualify as added value elements. The film will give these folks a higher-profile platform, at least in terms of mainstream Hollywood audiences, to show off their star power. Clancy Brown showing up and subtly riffing on his "Highlander" appearance is for fans old enough to have kids who can buy an R-rated movie ticket sans parent or guardian. Directed by Chad Stahelski, "John Wick: Chapter 4" sees the beleaguered not-so-retired hitman accepting an offer from the High Council to settle his life debt. The last three "Wick" flicks pulled near-unprecedented commercial growth, going from $88 million worldwide in 2014, to $171 million in 2017, to $322 million in 2019. In pre-COVID times, the big questions were whether a fourth chapter could continue that momentum and whether the franchise would expand its overseas muscle. "John Wick: Chapter 4" opens theatrically on March 24th Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjRHZEUamCc ARTICLE FROM POLYGON.COM John Wick Chapter 4 puts one of our greatest action heroes in a giant prosthetic suit The John Wick movies are a stuntman's franchise. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are legendary stunt performers and coordinators, and one of the joys of their movies getting bigger with each installment is seeing Stahelski (who now directs the films solo) fold in more and more action pros from around the world, like Mark Dacascos of Wu Assassins fame or The Raid's Yayan Ruhian. John Wick: Chapter 4 continues this tradition, notably with Hong Kong star Donnie Yen and the king of direct-to-video action himself, Scott Adkins - but like we've never seen him before. Scott Adkins is normally seen doing insanely athletic kicks. He has the sort of physique you might expect from someone who must convincingly portray action heroes who can knock someone's lights out with his shins. Here, on the other hand, is how he will appear as "Killa" in John Wick: Chapter 4:Adkins is playing against type here in a way that feels a lot like Colin Farrell's Penguin in The Batman - and previous Adkins movies like Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday show off the action star's willingness to have fun while kicking ass. Regardless of how much pain Adkins dishes out (or doesn't!) as Killa, John Wick: Chapter 4 is Adkins' highest-profile role to date. It may be a lot of people's first exposure to him. What a kick they're gonna get out of seeing what he's usually up to, once they dig into his back catalog. John Wick: Chapter 4 is in theaters March 24th. SCOTT ADKINS BIO (FROM WIKIPEDIA) Scott Adkins (born 17 June 1976) is an English actor, film producer and martial artist. He is best known for his role as the Russian prison fighter Yuri Boyka in the Undisputed franchise. He has played Yuri Boyka in the 2006 film Undisputed II: Last Man Standing and its two sequels, Undisputed III: Redemption (2010) and Boyka: Undisputed (2017); Casey Bowman in the 2009 film Ninja and its 2013 sequel Ninja: Shadow of a Tear; French in the 2018 film The Debt Collector and its 2020 sequel Debt Collectors (starring alongside Louis Mandylor). He worked in four films with his idol Jean-Claude Van Damme: The Shepherd: Border Patrol, Assassination Games, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning and The Expendables 2. He also had starring roles in The Legend of Hercules, Wolf Warrior and Ip Man 4: The Finale playing the main antagonist in all three films, and also appeared in The Bourne Ultimatum, Zero Dark Thirty, and the Marvel projects Mutant X, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Doctor Strange. In 2022, he starred in Day Shift with Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco, and will appear in John Wick: Chapter 4 alongside Keanu Reeves in 2023.https://johnwick.movie/film/john-wick-4https://twitter.com/johnwickmovie#JohnWick4

Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning is a really strange, violent and thoughtful art movie. John Hyams gives the viewer the beloved franchise characters in a meta way using the first film's own mythos to comment back on itself, filmmaking, violence and culture while also just being really cool and fun. Van Damme is subdued, regal and almost godlike in this role while Dolph doles out the enterainment. Scott Adkins does an impressive job at humbly but expertly taking the torch from his revered predecessor. When martial artist Larnell Stovall first saw the film Blade in 1998, it was a lightbulb moment. But it wasn't the actions of Wesley Snipes as the titular kick-ass vampire hunter which would spark a sudden interest in wanting to work in the movies; it was the actions of the people Wesley was beating up. Feeling inspired, Larnell took a bus from New Orleans to Hollywood armed only with his martial arts skills and the dream of making it in the stunt world. It wasn't long before he caught the attention of Chad Stahelski and David Leitch - owners of 87eleven Action Design - which would prove to be his ticket to the big-time, working as a fight choreographer and stunt coordinator on some of the biggest and best martial arts movies of recent times, including Undisputed 3: Redemption (2010), Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012), and work with fellow karate expert, Michael Jai White, including Falcon Rising (2014) and his Never Back Down sequels. He has worked in India - most notably as the award-winning action director on Sultan (2016), one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. Larnell has also made in-roads into the mainstream, acting as stunt coordinator on films like Ride Along (2014) and Creed (2015). In recent years, he has worked on some of Netflix's biggest shows, including the first season of Altered Carbon (2018) and Titans - a gritty take on the Teen Titans comic book, now entering its third season. Titans has provided Larnell with the opportunity to move into directing, mirroring a similar career trajectory to his buddies at 87eleven. He has the skills, the experience, and the creativity; and we cannot wait to see what Larnell cooks up next. What makes an anti-war film? Lists of English names. What is the line between an Exploitation film and an exploitative film? Uther gets a bit lost while Finn is a bit too happy talking about crazy violence. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Scott Adkins is one of the world's biggest martial arts movie stars. From humble beginnings as a Van Damme and Bruce Lee obsessed taekwondo practitioner growing up in Birmingham, UK, to starring in some of the best fight movies of the last decade, Scott Adkins has consistently brought a unique charm, athleticism and authenticity to his own special brand of high-kicking action films. His latest film, Boyka: Undisputed 4, sees Scott reprise his most famous role as the Russian ex-con' and MMA expert, Yuri Boyka. You can order the Universal Studios Home Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD release of Boyka: Undisputed 4 right now from Amazon. As well as leading roles in the Undisputed and Ninja franchises, Scott's many other martial arts action films include Hard Target 2, Eliminators, Assassination Games, Wolf Warrior and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. He has worked on huge Hollywood blockbusters like Doctor Strange, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Expendables 2, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Zero Dark Thirty, and worked with everyone including Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and Jacky Wu Jing. Scott has most recently completed back-to-back projects with the stuntman-turned-director Jesse V. Johnson, including Savage Dog, Accident Man - in which Scott also worked as scriptwriter and producer - and Triple Threat. The latter is an all-star fight flick featuring Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, Celina Jade, Jeeja Yanin, Michael Bisping and Michael Jai White. In this exclusive, wide-ranging interview, Scott talks about working with the Jackie Chan Stunt Team in Hong Kong, the trials and tribulations of Hollywood, his trademark style of fight choreography, and the increasing scourge of online piracy. Scott is the hardest working man in martial arts right now and it was a pleasure to sit with him and record this fascinating interview.

Film director John Hyams sat with me in a noisy Hollywood motel room to discuss his solid career as a director, from his terrific documentary start, to his great work with Jean Claude Van Damme, especially the bravura surprise that is Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, and his unique childhood that, along with art school and some illustration chops, helped prepare him to become the powerful filmmaker he is today. We get into the difference between directing for TV and feature films, how TV and movies have switched narrative places, the future of cinema, and some incredibly tangible mental tools that allow you to make better films (or really any project.) In addition to dozens of great takeaways for creators, this episode is chock-a-block with behind the scenes wisdom and anecdotes from some very notable projects and moments in time, including the Universal Soldier films, Z Nation, his secret doc that I don't want to spoil here, and it's incredibly timed connection to the world of MMA/UFC, to some projects he didn't direct, but rather observed being made... Why am I being vague? Listen to find out! Follow John Hyams on twitter @jrhyams. Drop the jerry can, light a cigarette, and throw it behind you as you walk away from boredom listening to this action-packed episode of Dread Media! First up, Desmond is joined by Adam and Luke to review the brand new Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. Then Devil Dinosaur Jr. gives us the skinny on Dredd. Desmond returns to go solo on a documentary that isn't an action film, but will probably have your heart pounding more than any other: The Imposter. There's also tunes from a bunch of Dread Media's favorite bands: "Gimme Some Action" by Fear, "All Good Soldiers" by Bad Religion, "I Am the Law" by Anthrax, "Stripsearch" by Faith No More, and "Fight to Kill" by Holy Grail. This week we talked to director John Hyams, who directed the MMA Doc "The Smashing Machine" as well as the upcoming "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning." He tells us stories about the Pride days in Japan as well as insight about Mark Kerr, as well as filming Universal Solider in Bulgaria. Vince talks Flight and Cloud Atlas, Brendan tells us about his trip to Hawaii - including getting evacuated and meeting the guy on whom South Park's zipline episode was based, and other Frotcast jackassery. We will be in Chicago this weekend! November 3rd and 4th! Go to Kickstarter to get tickets and other goodies. For movie news you can make fun of, go to www.filmdrunk.com. Drunk on!
