What is Customer Return on Investment? with Greg Boyd, Uvaro

Today's guest is Greg Boyd. He's the VP of Customer Excellence at Uvaro, a company that helps people transition into careers in tech sales through subscription based education and networking programs. In his role, Greg is responsible for the end-to-end revenue generation and retention strategy for the business. Today, we're going to chat with Greg about how he and his team have moved the needle on Customer Return on Investment, first at Exonify and now at Uvaro."With return on investment, you can be academic about it. I always have thought about it as some sort of data-supported return on investment. You spent $100. You got at least $100 back. So you have the data to back. That's easy. But the way I've always thought about it is combining that with the feeling of value that your customer gets some. So return on investments always came down to this word of value. And I learned really quickly that I would have lots of customers that are happy to talk to me. I think I'm a nice guy. We're having a great conversation today. But ‘happy' doesn't drive renewal, and it doesn't drive a deal. On the customer side at Exonify, we started to see that happiness does not equal value. And so understanding what is the driver of the return is what's going to be the driver of the growth that's going to come. When you're looking at the return on investment metric, a great way to look at whether they're getting value is: Are they growing?"Greg has also shared with us an excellent article that outlines some of the topics he discussed in the episode. Learn why your customers avoid talking to you, and how to change that: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-your-customers-avoid-talking-you-how-change-greg-boyd-bwczc

In this episode of The Jake Dunlap Show, Jake is joined by Joseph Fung, a repeat founder with multiple successful exits who share his perspective on what career success really means, the importance of creating better workplaces by developing more effective onboarding and enabling processes and why he thinks it's never too late to change your career path. Joseph was attending his undergrad in computer engineering at the University of Waterloo when he decided to delay his studies and take the time to travel and work on creating his own business. His plan to take things slow and ponder his next steps paid off. Since graduating, Joseph has been the mastermind behind 5 technology companies he built from the ground up and managed to exit successfully. Today, his company Uvaro helps technology businesses hire sales professionals that can deliver from day one and offers recruits the training they need to be competitive in this modern selling environment.  Time stamps: (00:57) Jake's guest today- Joseph Fung, Founder and CEO of Uvaro, and host of “The Seller's Journey Podcast”;(02:13) His mother pushed him to find a path doing something he loved most, and not waste his time working normal teenage jobs;(03:27) Discovering his passion for computers purely by accident;(05:01) Taking time off from school to travel and work on building his own company;(08:03) Realizing the importance of creating a company where employees enjoy working and are treated right;(08:58) Working with friends and family and things he's learned along the way from each company he founded;(10:50) Building TribeHr as a learning venture company, and getting acquired by NetSuite;(13:17) Leaving TribeHr, starting a new company, Kiite, and following through with his plans of creating better workplaces and a more effective approach to onboarding and enabling;(14:37) Shifting in a new direction demanded by the market and accelerated by the pandemic;(18:03) A definition of career success and how the perspective on success shifts depending on the role you find yourself in;(24:57) Trends and challenges- companies are no longer interested to invest in training and developing their employees and are now taken by surprise by the rapid changes in the way sales work and the scarcity of talent on the market;(27:25) What attracts Joseph to Sales- both industries require the same type of skillset;(29:27) Buyer behavior is changing and B2B companies need to offer people options and bring their sales tactics and processes up to date;(33:39) Don't lose sight of the importance of your customers' experience;(38:08) The world is waking up! People start to acknowledge that career success needs to change.  Quotes “I was really angry and frustrated and (...) I needed to take time off to get away from the University, so I found a role in China and took a year off. When I came back I realized I just need to not wait to live life and so I proceeded to do one term of school, then take a year off, do a term of school, take a year off so it took me eight years to finish my undergrad.” “(His company, Simple Machines) It all stemmed from the idea of trying to build a better company, where people really enjoy working, don't have the same fear, and do some really cool tech along the way.” “With Kiite, we went back to that drawing board. How do you get people effective from day one? (...) At that time there was a lot of new technology coming out around content mining, around conversational AI, around leveraging the existing knowledge in the organization, so we were able to leverage a lot of technology to come up with a different approach to onboarding and enabling.” “(When exiting a company) you always have this period where it feels like you have your two feet, each in different ships, and you try to figure out what is the right course of action(...) Honestly, it feels a lot like a grieving process.” “Spending time with people who were looking to change their lives we realized that the definition of success is much more holistic (...) It's financial security, a work that you enjoy but also feeling fulfilled in your life choices and your peer network.” “Trust me! You can have the money, you can have the life that looks good on paper but you might not still feel successful in the long term. Success is not all just about that.” “We're competing with everybody! If your competitors are global, and customers are global you need to be able to interact with them on chat, take a credit card on texting, maybe even in different languages (...) and it really does come back to the different types of diversity you manage to bring into your team(...) The teams who get it are going to continue to thrive and they're going to outcompete the folks who don't get it night and day.” “I love the art of improving the way we sell but just the blind adherence to that kind of a process is kind of a failure of leadership.”______________________________ Get in contact with Joseph: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/josephfung/?hl=enLinkedin:https://rb.gy/po29swFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jbfungTwitter: https://twitter.com/josephfung  Joseph's Podcast-The Seller's Journey Podcast  Joseph's company, Uvaro- social links: Website- https://uvaro.com/Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/uvaro.life/Twitter- https://twitter.com/uvarolifeInstagram- https://www.instagram.com/uvaro.life/Linkedin- https://linkedin.com/company/uvaroTik Tok- https://www.tiktok.com/@uvaro.lifeYoutube- https://www.youtube.com/uvaro__________________________ Follow Jake: Website- https://www.jakedunlap.com/Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/jake_dunlap_/Linkedin- https://www.linkedin.com/in/jakedunlapTwitter- https://twitter.com/jaketdunlap______________________________

Tech sales is an industry with a surprisingly high turnover due to the lack of sufficient training. A better system for finding the right candidates and providing adequate training will help business owners find employees who are in it for the long run and ready for more fulfilling careers. Today's guest, Joseph Fung from Uvaro specializes in making this whole process easy and effective for business owners and employees. Tune in to hear more about the process of finding the right employees for your company and how to keep them long-term. About our guest: Joseph Fung is the founder of Uvaro, a company that creates a better way to grow careers. He is known for his skills and knowledge in Entrepreneurship, SEO, Business Development, User Interface Design, Web Development, Startups, and others. On Today's Episode:  Where Joseph sees himself on his own entrepreneurial journey-2:23  The importance of pushing boundaries in business for growth. -4:48  Recognizing boundaries in business and chances to bring your A-game. -6:23  How to improve the process of meetings to make them more effective. -10:44  The series of events that have made the biggest impact on Joseph's career as an entrepreneur. -13:05  What a good business coach can do for you. -16:05  The process Joseph's company uses to find the right people and train them to perform and succeed. -18:50 The power of forming a peer group or network when job searching and how Joseph provides that for his customers. -23:15 The difference between direct hires for companies and Uvaro members. -26:11 ● How Uvaro gives members an advantage when transitioning into the tech industry. -28:17  The new set of problems businesses are seeing and what we need to pay attention to. -30:27  How Joseph defines success in his business. -32:45  Key Takeaways:  As entrepreneurs, sometimes we need to strategically pump the breaks so that the outcome is stronger, especially when hiring. Paying extra attention to the details will help you focus on the qualities you need in an ideal candidate.  To have more effective team meetings, go into them with a specific outcome in mind and plan accordingly. This will help you stay on task and complete the meeting in a timely manner.  Sometimes it's the negative interactions that make you a better entrepreneur and leader because they end up being learning experiences.   A network or circle can be a huge benefit for your employees because they get support and build long-lasting careers.  As entrepreneurs, we must pay attention to societal or economic realignments going on in the world so that we can adjust and come up with new opportunities.  Empowering our employees to succeed is a key component of retention. Pushing boundaries and finding new ways to do things is a great way to do this. [4:51] “I like to play with those edges and push those boundaries. Sometimes you fall, but sometimes you surprise yourself with greatness.” How do you inspire greatness in your employees? Today, joining me for this episode of the Mads Singers Management Podcast is Joseph Fung, the CEO, and Co-Founder of Uvaro, an online sales accelerator that helps sales professionals be more successful regardless of their specialty is. Based in Canada, Joseph is a lover of all things tech, software, and entrepreneurship. We begin this episode where I admit that sales aren't my thing and where I asked Joseph when it is the right time to hire your first sales rep for your company or business. Joseph agrees that sales can be complex because he has also struggled with his first companies. He shares how he tried to learn those skills quickly by going to ToastMasters and the BNI, where he learned how to make a pitch and do the proper handshake.According to Joseph, unlike other careers where you can get accreditation, sales is different because you can't just check the list. Instead of looking for someone who has all the credentials, Joseph says business owners should look for someone who knows their customers well. While taking risks is part and parcel of starting a business, many entrepreneurs don't tend to see its downside, especially when some of them have the privilege because they can have something to fall back on if their venture fails. Each of us has our interpretations when it comes to starting businesses. Some say we shouldn't do business with our friends or families. Some will say that it isn't wise to start a company with a stranger. Still, regardless if we have a good or bad experience, we should always take it as a learning experience.Whether you choose to join BNI, ToastMasters, or whatever group is out there, you will reap more than what you have planted initially if you deliberately want to improve yourself. The sound energy you put out there will come back to you tenfold and even more! Although it may not be automatic, intentional improvements will significantly affect yourself and the people around you.Key Learning Points: Joseph says that everyone looks for sales reps that have sold similar things before. While it can work, he says that it works better if you know your customer well. - 03:00 In reply to Mads' statement, Joseph says that even though top-level candidates or employees may produce good results, they may not necessarily have the same results for you. - 03:47 Mads says that many business owners and entrepreneurs don't tend to see the downside when taking a risk- 12:33 Joseph shares that he has had both painful and sound experiences in business. However, both of them were all learning experiences - 18:36 While being spontaneous is a good sign when starting a business, Mads cautions that business owners shouldn't always change their ideas and products every week. - 21:37 Joseph says that he is a firm believer in creating a workplace where one can thrive and have a healthy (work-life) balance - 22:24 Joseph adds that it's essential to have partners who have a similar level as you. - 22:43 Mads says that the quality of people you surround yourself with matters. - 28:03 Joseph says that when you put good energy out there, it comes back to you - 35:18 Joseph says that if business owners and sales reps are deliberate about improving each step of the way, the effect will be compounding. - 39:39 Resources Mentioned:Video Library of UvaroConnect with Joseph: LinkedInTwitterWebsiteInstagram

Being a founder-based seller can be tough. For one, you've got to wear multiple hats, and two, it becomes harder to take track of all the things you're running. What we see most founders struggle in is handing that baton to sales roles, especially presales. In today's episode, we talk to Joseph Fung on why that is so, what founders can do to get out of that sales role fast, and how sales engineers can make many founders and company owners' lives so much easier and better. show notes: https://wethesalesengineers.com/show181

Modern B2B Sales was significantly, and forever altered by COVID-19.  The trends are not new, but were definitely accelerated in 2020 and 2021.Joseph is a multi-time founder of B2B SaaS companies, and his experience, frustration and challenge with scaling the sales organization was the catalyst to founding a company, Uvaro, purpose built to train the modern B2B sales professional. As a trained engineer, Joseph wants to see the data that measures the variables that lead to the highest performing sales organization and sales professional.  The patterns Joseph  was able to identify within the top performing sales organizations, was easy to capture and the better news, not that hard to replicate. One of the key challenges Joseph sees is that corporations cannot continuously train new sales hires.  Thus the average ramp time can be 6, 8 even 12 months.  The impact, quota delivery is dramatically decreased in the first year of employment.  The resultant goal - how to train sales professionals not only continuously throughout the year, but even before they are hired in early career roles.Uvaro  teaches and trains students with little to no B2B tech sales experience.   Uvaro's median student have a median income of $28,000 coming into training (21st percentile) and exit the training program with on target earnings of $70K and greater (46th quartile).Less than 2% of colleges have a sales curriculum or a sales major.  Joseph highlights "prestige" as a factor in the lack of adoption and introduction of sales majors in college.  However, as the Cloud industry marches towards total revenue of $800B+, the industry will need 360,000 additional sales professionals to achieve that level.CEOs, whose success depends on finding and hiring sales professionals, should be motivated to encourage their local colleges and alma maters to introduce sales curriculum, even a sales major to produce more early career sales professionals.   What are the skills required for the modern B2B sales professional of the future?  One significant factor impacting these skills is the evolution of Product-Led Growth as a customer acquisition motion.  Joseph views this as a re-allocation of investments from marketing to product, and will not materially affect the need for sales professionals,  In fact, the average B2B SaaS companies has twice an many sales professionals as they do engineers, and this trend is not changing. In a PLG company, sales professionals will need to become an expert in the industry and the business process of their customers, with an increased focus on the business value your product enables. One additional aspect of the modern sales professional will be the ability to expand and retain existing customers in a recurring revenue model. The core skill required for this - the ability to build and maintain trust based relationships with their customers.Lastly, Joseph shared that grit and understanding how to leverage a system to your advantage are two key reasons why even classically trained engineers and other technical roles can be leveraged to build a successful sales career.Joseph is a great listen for anyone considering or just wants to learn about a career in B2B Technology sales.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

He is an INTP on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test. The “I”  for introversion is his default mode to recharge himself after being in the public eye as an entrepreneur. He also confesses to having an absurd sense of humour. Even though he considers himself impatient, he acknowledges that patience is a choice.Cultural EpiphaniesGrowing up, Joseph's family's way of doing things was different from that of his friends. He was used to eating with chopsticks and struggled with a knife and fork when he was invited for dinner at his friend's house. When he was nine, his parents let him and his siblings use power tools to help construct their house, which shocked their friends. Advice to an Employer Joseph has a “voracious appetite for information”. He also uses feedback extensively, sharing it and requesting it at every step. More Great Insights! For anyone looking to transition to a new career, irrespective of their background, Uvaro runs a training course to help begin a career in technology sales.

Welcome back to the Catapulting Commissions Podcast with your host, Anthony Garcia. Our guest this week is Joseph Fung, CEO of Uvaro, a tech sales career accelerator. He’s a repeat founder and CEO and often speaks on sales, leadership, diversity, and corporate social responsibility. Joseph sits on the board of Communitech, the KW Symphony, GTAN, and volunteers with several other local not for profits. Today, he’s here to talk about tech sales, getting there, and thinking well ahead.   Joseph is the CEO of Uvaro, a tech sales career accelerator. They run a 12-week training program for driven, talented individuals who are looking to transition into technology and sales roles. They believe in their work so much, they don’t even charge tuition until you’ve landed a full-time job. This is all so doable because they believe information should be free. All the content they make is available for free, but--you can’t learn the piano just by reading a book. In their program you’re doing actionable things, getting hours under your belt, and building important sales muscles. They’re looking for things like grit and tenacity. People who know how to bring value instead of just pushing a sale--people who want what the outcome will be.   Part of what they teach at Uvaro are sales methodologies. The truth is, many companies fail not because they have the wrong methodology, it’s that their people just aren’t executing. It’s about knowing all the methodologies and pulling them in when it matters. What else sets Uvaro apart is their approach to what is being taught and what is needed. Often, companies are looking for fully-formed sales people--that doesn’t happen. Talent needs to be developed, and those who do it now are going to be far ahead.    To make yourself a valuable candidate in the future, especially in tech, Joseph turns towards an often overlooked aspect of the sales process--how you carry yourself when you meet a client. The way you run yourself on Zoom makes a huge difference. Did you start on time? Do you know how to mute and unmute effectively? Is your lighting well positioned? All of these things greatly impact your success. Getting comfortable with online etiquette is essential.    The second actionable thing you can do right now to prepare for the transition into tech sales is video content. Building a human connection when you can’t be in-person is a valuable skill to have. Most reps aren’t doing this well yet. If you can get ahead, you’ll have the advantage.    Tune in to hear more about Joseph’s company and his philosophy on sales, leadership, and more.    LINKS   https://uvaro.com/ youtube.com/uvaro joseph@uvaro.com

Joseph Fung is the CEO of Uvaro, a tech sales career accelerator, and of Kiite, a sales enablement platform purpose-built to provide sales teams with the information they need when they need it. As he says "We started Uvaro because the old approach to tech hiring is broken. The fastest-growing segment of our economy needs 250,000 new sales professionals. Our colleges and universities aren't training them. Worse yet, when tech companies want to hire diverse talent, established interview practices and company cultures put up barriers. Marginalized people who do accept job offers are often left to flounder by businesses that don't have effective sales training programs. At Uvaro, we've created a better way to grow careers. How The Dots Joined Up For Joseph Instead of preventing access to fulfilling work, we provide accessible training, on-demand support resources, and best-in-class tools that teach participants how to build on their successes. Uvaro is not just a lecture: A graduate of the University of Waterloo's Computer Engineering program, Joseph's a repeat Founder & CEO, and with multiple successful exits, and speaks frequently on the topics of sales leadership, diversity, and corporate social responsibility. He is an active early-stage investor who ensures that the majority of his investments are into women-led companies. Joseph also sits on the boards of Communitech, the Golden Triangle Angel Network, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. So was this idea born out of a personal frustration with the tech industry or a clever insight to what was happening elsewhere? And and even better questions, why Uvaro? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Joseph Fung Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Joseph Fung such as: Joseph shares how they picked the name of his business and why they want away from basic domain picking rules. We discuss how feedback is a gift and the reasons why you should listen to everyone's opinion no matter what they say, or who is saying it. Why creating a job that you love is not always the case no matter how much you try. You have to accept that sometimes the love leaves you for awhile. And lastly….. Joseph shares vocally the awe he feels every time that his students reveal to the world just how special his training centre is to them.

Episode #214 What to Expect From Real Estate Tech in 2021 with Joseph Fung

In this episode of The Hyperfast Agent Podcast, host Dan Lesniak celebrates the first episode of 2021 by interviewing Joseph Fung, the CEO and Founder of Uvaro, one of the fastest-growing tech boot camps in the country. Joseph discusses how innovations in technology are affecting the real estate industry, and what to expect from tech in 2021. Episode Highlights:  Joseph has run five B2B software companies, and has sold a few of them. Now, Joseph's company is able to train sales professionals in tech from a variety of industries. With students all across North America using Uvaro's training software, Joseph is able to help launch the careers of a lot of people. There are a lot of assumptions and biases that come with selling software. Uvaro does not charge it's users until they land a job. Storytelling is one of the fundamental skills that successful software sales professionals all have. Real estate professionals, for the most part, have the strength of storytelling that it takes to sell software. With sales teams in the tech space, many of them struggle with sales discovery questions. Many real estate agents don't realize the strengths that they already have in their arsenal. Right now, there is a large realignment of technology use across various industries where it was not previously utilized. The use of video in marketing and communication is the most important form of tech that realtors need to double down on. Using video to communicate can help agents bring their clients into the space without physically being there. There are a plethora of widgets and apps that can help smooth out the process of showing a house. It's not that these technologies are new, it's just that different industries are being forced to adopt them. Joseph uses a variety of tools to make back-office improvements rather than customer-facing. TikTok is becoming more and more attractive to sales professionals due to the lack of tools available for creators. Agents can differentiate themselves by sending out their brand on the content that they create. Google announced that it is hopping on the trend by adding stories for websites. Though Snapchat invented the story, every other social media platform has ripped it and shifted the landscape. Storytelling and discretionary effort are two things that real estate agents understand more than most. Unlike many sales professionals, real estate agents treat their business like a business. Companies are starting to realize that their growth is not limited by their geography. It's absolutely vital for sales professionals, regardless of experience, to get comfortable on video. 3 Key Points: Uvaro has taken sales training and turned it into the core of the business by helping people transition into tech from a plethora of sales industries. Due to the effects of the pandemic, different types of technology are spreading into industries where it was not used before. With so many apps that make content consumption incredibly accessible, TikTok provides convenience for those on the content creation side.
