This month's selection for Wonder Why may not be the weirdest song we've had on the show but I'm willing to bet it's the weirdest performer (at least by name) we'll have the show.  Who is ? and the Mysterians? Are they Marvel superheroes about to get their own entry into the MCU?  Not that we're aware of at this time. What we do know is ? and the Mysterians originated in Michigan and went on to have two Top 40 hits in 1967. The biggest hit was the #1 song, "96 Tears." Should they have had more success post 1967? How long did they last as a band? What is the longest time between releasing a single and still performing it in concert? Some of these questions are answered on this episode of Wonder Why

Initially focusing more on politics, the #PCPN was developed with the creation of the shows, "Wonder Why," "Popology101" and "The FANtastic Podcast."  As the election of 2020 comes to a (possible) conclusion, it feels this is the best time to bring Politicalamity to an end as well. After nearly four years of discussing politics, analyzing the hypocrisy and looking to the future of even greater hypocrisy would lead to less positivity and more cynicism. So with that in mind, the time has come to retire Politicalamity unless some major news comes up that deserves our attention. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Curtis Stigers got his big break as a young man in the early 90s, with a top ten pop hit (1991’s “Wonder Why”), followed by a series of soul-pop records. Around that time he also recorded a version of Nick Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” for The Bodyguard soundtrack, which sold in the 10s of millions of copies. That is to say, Curtis got his start in the deep of the pool, swimming with the sharks. Stigers has a soulful voice, a direct approach to storytelling both as a songwriter and an interpreter, and he plays good saxophone too. He came out of Boise, Idaho, and was mentored somewhat incredibly by the gospel and jazz pianist Gene Harris. So maybe it was only a matter of time before he turned his heart back towards his first love, jazz. After living in New York and launching himself as a pop act, he made two somewhat improbable decisions in a row, first pivoting away from pop and towards making jazz records, and then moving home to his hometown in Idaho, from where he has operated since 2003. His new album, Gentleman was designed to be a record of the moment. It features a collection of songs that speak to his own life and also the general conversation around what it means to be a sensitive, well mannered, responsible man in today’s world. It’s an important conversation, one that we’ll continue to have, but one that seems almost nostalgic compared to what we’re dealing with right now. At the last minute, Stigers added the song “Shut Ins” to the record. It’s a song that behaves both as a kind of undiscovered classic, and also as eerily right on time. Here he talks about promoting new music in the midst of a pandemic, what it means to be a gentleman, how hanging out in a hotel lobby in Boise changed his life, which lessons he learned from Michael Brecker & Gene Harris, and the difference between a tie and a cravat. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.curtisstigers.com

Taking it back to the streets of Brooklyn as @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb break down the history of Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock. The two rap pioneers hit the Top 40 chart with the infectious crowd-pleaser "It Takes Two" in 1988.  Personal issues and a changing musical landscape are two reasons the rap duo may have only had one chart hit. Even without chart success, Rob Base has had a steady career and still performs regularly on '80s and '90s throwback concerts. After the discussion of Rob Base, Mike and Chad offer up their picks of the month for Septober. One's a band with over a decade of of success, the other pick is a new band promoting their first album. www.positivecynicism.com www.hockeytransplant.com

Based on the sound of her Top 10 hit, "One of Us," audiences expected one sound but listening to her album Relish, might have been surprised at the other songs. In addition to the discussion about Joan Osborne, @chadsmart and @mikedekalb give their picks of the month. This month they choose an actor/musician and female alternative icon. Taking a trip back to the summer of 1970, @chadsmart and @mikedekalb examine the hit and "career" of English artist Ray Dorsett, pka Mungo Jerry. Mungo Jerry had a summertime hit with "In the Summertime." A catchy jingle that peaked at #3 on the Billboard chart and then Mungo Jerry was only heard from again if you were in Europe. Why was there not a follow up hit? Before the discussion begins, Mike talks about attending a recent concert by previous Wonder Why artist, Thomas Dolby.  After the Mungo Jerry discussion, Mike and Chad turn the focus to their picks of the month.  Find out what Gary Cherone, Tupac and Scott Caan have in common. Rundown: On this week’s show we’re talking about Kathryn Bigelow’s new movie, Detroit about the riots, the Algiers Hotel incident. It’s a searing, adult drama about race, police, the changes in American society of the 1960s, and one that has an all-too timely feel today. Wonder Why. We also use this as a jumping off point to talk about dramas for adults and wonder if they’re still a thing. We then talk about a provocative piece in The Guardian by Danny Leigh which asks the question is Hollywood in desperate need of a Bonnie and Clyde moment… more on that in segment two. It’s a good discussion. We then wrap up with our old pal Peter Brown, the Associate Editor of Assignment X, as we do one of our Status Check segments on, what else, Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 5, Eastwatch.   Topic 1: Review of Detroit and the state of Movie Dramas Is there a movie more timely playing in theaters right now than “Detroit?” Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and written by Mark Boal, who previously worked together on “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Detroit” tells the true story of the Algiers Motel incident, which happened during the 12th Street riot in 1967 Detroit. The police raided the Algiers Motel believing there was a sniper, and proceeded to beat and torture 9 people, 7 African American men and 2 white women, most of them teenagers. Three African American teenagers were killed by police officers. The film stars Algee Smith, John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jason Mitchell and Anthony Mackie. The movie about race and police brutality, and after everything that happened this weekend in Charlottesville, and the acquittal after acquittal of police officers in the murder of black men, this movie is set in 1967, but it could be set right now.   Topic 2: Does Hollywood need a shake-up? For the past few years now, film lovers and movie critics have commented on the rise of the genre film, how wanna-be blockbusters have broken out of summer and seemingly eaten up every month of the movie calendar, and how movies don’t seem to get any love anymore unless there’s some comic book connection. Movies have become very predictable and stale, and have more or less lost their preeminence as the most valuable real estate in pop culture storytelling. To quote a Battlestar: Galactica, this has all happened before and will happen again. 50 years ago, the old studio system was dying. Big movie after big movies were bombing. But back then those movies weren’t wanna-be blockbusters but bible movies, musicals and westerns… essentially the comic book movie fads of their day. Then along came a little movie called Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and that movie started a revolution in 1960s filmmaking leading to the golden age of director centered movies in the 1970s, including The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Jaws, Star Wars and on and on. Essentially, Bonnie and Clyde blew up the status quo and made way for a new Hollywood era. Is Hollywood ripe for new Bonnie and Clyde? If so, what would that look like today? That’s the provocative question we’re going to talk about, with a nod towards Danny Leigh’s article in the Guardian this weeks which asked this same question, and got us thinking. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/aug/10/bored-bad-blockbusters-why-hollywood-needs-another-bonnie-and-clyde   Status Check: Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 5 "Eastwatch" From the Game of Thrones Wiki: Daenerys demands loyalty from the surviving Lannister soldiers. „It has an element of Elton John and modern references like OutKast and Justin Timberlake", beschreibt Perretta den Song treffend. Das Album "Stitch Me Up" erscheint am 22. April.
