September 28th is International Safe Abortion Day, a global day of action dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safe and legal abortion care and access to it. In Canada, one in three women will have an abortion in their lifetime, and abortion is one of the most common healthcare needs in our country. While most women in the country support the right to choose and access abortion, there still exist knowledge gaps on the subject. For example, six in every ten Canadian women can't differentiate between medication abortion and the Plan B pill. This data was obtained through a national online Ipsos survey commissioned by Linepharma International to understand the current knowledge of abortion methods, preferences, and availabilities of options in Canada. The results underscore the importance of destigmatizing conversations about abortion once and for all.To acknowledge the importance of International Safe Abortion Day, Linepharma International invited our host Eva Hartling to speak with two experts on the subject. She is joined by Dr. Konia Trouton, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Practice at UBC and a Clinical Associate at Women's College Hospital in Toronto, and Rachel Cairns, a performer, writer and creator of Aborsh, a popular podcast on abortion in Canada. In this conversation, we aim to shed some light on the role and benefits of reproductive and sexual education for women and the path to lifting stigmas surrounding abortion and reproductive rights in the country — ensuring that all can access safe abortion care. For more on abortion options in Canada, visit: http://myabortionoptions.ca/This season of our podcast is brought to you by TD Canada Women in Enterprise. It's been a year since Roe v. Wade was overturned. In this episode of Leading Diversity at Work, experts tackle the sensitive subject of how companies handle the issue of abortion. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
An episode years in the making finally hits the airwaves. When I first thought about people I know who would make great guests, Sioux Falls actor and dear friend, Erin Sharp, quickly came to mind. Erin has a great story to tell and he shares his thoughts on fatherhood, finding your calling where you least expect it, and rediscovering a love of the arts that has led to a successful local theater career. We then dive into Erin's pick for movie of the week, Steven Spielberg's World War II epic, Saving Private Ryan.Erin is not incredibly active on social media, but you can no doubt find him gracing one of the stages in Sioux Falls at any time of the year. For tickets to his current production, The Movie Game, at the Olde Towne Dinner Theatre in Worthing, SD, check out OTDT.org for information.Follow Fat Dude Digs Flicks across social media:Facebook - Fat Dude Digs FlicksInstagram - FatDudeDigsFlicksTwitter - FatDudeFlicksTikTok - FatDudeDigsFlicksLetterboxd - FatDudeFlicksSubscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher Radio, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Dr. Atul Gawande, Assistant Administrator for Global Health at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), joins us to share how countries are responding to the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. He says, “There have been some instances of concern about a possible chilling effect…I've been in touch to address questions and meet with our partners…the United States is the largest supporter of family planning around the world…we are the leading experts in how to ensure modernized forms of family planning women reach the world, making sure women have rights and that voluntary family planning is a critical right.” Hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter also ask him about USAID's efforts involving COVID and the war in Ukraine.
In this episode, historian Dr. Sanjam Ahluwalia talks to us about how middle-class men led India's birth control advocacy in the 19th century, how contraception is used to surveil women, and why reproductive rights is such a fraught issue around the world.‘In Perspective' is our podcast series where academics reveal little-known facts about Indian history, society and culture.Notes:1:16- In the late 19 and early 20th centuries in India, what kind of debates around contraception do we see within the medical establishment and among colonial authorities, and why was the colonial state hesitant to make active policy interventions to actually encourage birth control?6:24- How did the rise of the Indian middle-class lead to the emergence of birth control advocacy at this time? 14:04- Could you elaborate on what ‘eugenic patriotism' means? 18:30- What positions did first generation India middle-class feminists take on birth control in colonial India? 23:52- How did British and American advocates of birth control get involved in Indian efforts in 20th century India, and what impact did this have on global campaigns on birth control? 31:13- Why did Western birth control activists find it necessary to intervene in India? 46:14- How did birth control become a tool of surveillance and control of women subaltern classes, and is this a legacy that remains strong till today?
City Lights in conjunction with Mother Jones (https://www.motherjones.com) present "Defending Choice: Roe vs. Wade and the Battle to Preserve Women's Reproductive Rights." This event was originally broadcast via Zoom, hosted by Peter Maravelis, and moderated by Becca Andrews of Mother Jones Magazine with Jenny Brown, Dr. Katherine Brown, Joshua Prager, and Mary Ziegler. You can purchase copies of the panelists' books directly from City Lights here: "Dollars for Life: The Anti-Abortion Movement and the Fall of the Republican Establishment" - by Mary Ziegler: https://citylights.com/dollars-for-life-anti-abortion-movemen/ "Without Apology: The Abortion Struggle Now" - by Jenny Brown: https://citylights.com/praxis/without-apology-abortion-struggle-now/ "The Family Roe: An American Story" - by Joshua Prager: https://citylights.com/north-america/family-roe-amer-story/ Becca Andrews is a reporter at Mother Jones. A Southerner, she most often writes about the Southeast, gender, and culture. Before joining Mother Jones as an editorial fellow, she wrote for newspapers in Tennessee. Her work has also appeared in Slate, The New Republic, Wired, and Jezebel, among others. Her first book, "No Choice," on the dwindling access to abortion in the United States, is due out in October 2022 from Hachette's Public Affairs imprint. Jenny Brown was a leader in the fight to get the morning-after pill over the counter in the US and a plaintiff in the winning lawsuit. She is co-author of the Redstockings book "Women's Liberation and National Health Care: Confronting the Myth of America." While editor at Labor Notes magazine, she coauthored "How to Jump-Start Your Union: Lessons from the Chicago Teachers." She writes, teaches, and organizes with the feminist group National Women's Liberation and is the author of "Birth Strike: The Hidden Fight over Women's Work." Verso Books published her book "WITHOUT APOLOGY: The Abortion Struggle Now." Dr. Katherine Brown is a general obstetrician-gynecologist and is fellowship-trained in family planning at UCSF. She provides full-scope reproductive healthcare. She is a passionate advocate for reproductive health, choice, and justice. Her research focuses on exploring and improving the reproductive health experiences of Black women. Joshua Prager, a former senior writer for The Wall Street Journal, has written about historical secrets—revealing all from the hidden scheme that led to baseball's most famous moment (Bobby Thomson's “Shot Heard Round the World”) to the only-ever anonymous recipient of a Pulitzer Prize (a photographer he tracked down in Iran). His work, described by George Will as “exemplary journalistic sleuthing,” has shed new light on our cultural touchstones. So does his new book, "The Family Roe," illuminating unknown stories and people behind Roe v. Wade, and enabling the public, for the first time, to see the abortion debate in America in its full social and personal context. The book was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Mary Ziegler is the Stearns Weaver Miller Professor at Florida State University College of Law. She specializes in the legal history of reproduction, the family, sexuality, and the Constitution. In the spring of 2022, she is visiting at Harvard Law School. Her most recent book, "Abortion and the Law in America: A Legal History, Roe v. Wade to the Present," was published by Cambridge University Press in 2020, and received positive reviews in outlets from the Washington Post to the Christian Science Monitor. Her new book, "Dollars for Life: The Antiabortion Movement and the Fall of the Republican Establishment," was published by Yale University Press in June of 2022. She also has a forthcoming book with "Routledge, Reproduction and the Constitution." Her next project, What Roe Means: A History, will be published by Yale in 2023. Utah's more restrictive abortion law, its so-called "trigger law," is on hold pending a lawsuit brought by Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is arguing that the right to an abortion is protected by the Utah Constitution. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson wanted to ask her guests about that on A Woman's View. Her guests this week include Meghan Holbrook, Senior Vice President in the Office of the President of Zions Bank, Susan Spiers, CEO of the Utah Association of CPAs, and Cathleen Sparrow, Executive Director of the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation. Today I am honored to be sitting down with Dr. Whitney You, a high risk OBGYN. I brought her on to discuss the overturn of Roe V. Wade, but it became a much larger conversation of what freedom, sanctuary, and security mean in America right now. Dr. You was planning on taking her children to the local 4th of July parade at Highland Park, where the most recent mass shooting took place. Dr. You and her family ended up in a mandated shelter in place, as the authorities were looking for the shooter outside of her neighborhood. In her words, "I just felt really defeated and tired. And scared. I just wanted to keep my kids safe. And at this point - I don't trust that the government is going to do that. So you get into, 'Well what do I need to do to keep my kids safe? I don't have the answer.' As a parent and a mother - not having that answer is a very helpless feeling." Discussion Points: It doesn't feel like there is sanctuary or safe spaces in America right now. How are we to be proactive as American citizens when everything feels so polarized, volatile, and divided? We talk about the feelings of hopelessness but also honor our privilege in a country where many live in neighborhoods that have never felt safe or protected. How do we have conversations with each other - and develop more empathy, compassion, and emotional intelligence as a country... as well as coming to the discussion with real knowledge and education on a subject versus an opinion or belief? We talk about how guns have more rights than women in America right now. How the overturn of Roe V. Wade is not just an abortion issue, it's a human rights and equity issue. Dr. You talks about how it will disproportionately effect the under resourced, women of color, individuals struggling with metal illness, in the military, and those who rely on public funds. It's a space where we lack a lot of definitions and the necessity of more conversations about it, de-stigmatizing it, and taking the shame away.

LGBTQIA and Women's Reproductive Rights are under attack in the United States. The nearly fifty year old federal law, Roe V Wade has been struck down by the United States Supreme Court. This is the first in the history of the United States Supreme Count, a right has been taken away. The United States is at a very serious cross roads. It is only a backward nation which takes away a right enjoyed by so many. It is Roe V Wade today, tomorrow they may seek to return Black people into shackles and chains. Do not, for one moment believe returning Black people to servitude is impossible. For many years, pro-women's rights activists has been warning this day would come. The people of the United States need to mobilize, organize, and vote against all Republicans in every nook and cranny of the United States in the upcoming Mid-term elections in November 2022. The Republicans are now a cult, and need to be purged from the political system of the United States. On this broadcast of the show, host Garnett Ankle speaks with Kenyatta Thompson, Director Of Organizing, at Katal Center For Equity, Health, & Justice. Listen as Kenyatta Thompson fields questions surrounding LGBTQIA & Women's Reproductive Rights; and the strking down of Roe V Wade & its impact on those two aforementioned communities.
IT'S BLOODY GIAL-LY!!!This month, I take a detour into a miniseries on the Giallo genre. You see, for some reason, this genre never really quite stuck with me and I want to change that. This week's episode was inspired by the tough conversations we have had since the news leaked that the Supreme Court is in the process of trying to overturn the Roe vs. Wade decision. To get peripheral insight on the topic, and since we weren't necessarily wanting to get too deep into the politics just yet, we wanted to chat with someone who has worked with women who have had to make the hard decision to seek out an abortion. Specifically someone who has worked with the kind of women who would be directly impacted by the legislation being overturned. We felt that was important because as we know those with privilege, power and money won't be impacted in the same way that underprivileged, marginalized, minority women will be. So we interviewed Courtney Nelson — a Physician Assistant (PA) passionate about health equity, social justice, and patient advocacy. Prior to her work as a PA she spent a few years working at Planned Parenthood where she became intimately aware of the devastating socio-political dynamic that surrounds women's health, family planning and reproductive rights. As a heads up, we would like to be very clear that while we do hold our own opinions on this topic — and you will hear them on the episode, we are open to hearing where everyone is at on this topic. We like to keep the dialogue open as long as we can do so respectfully and with compassion. We hope you enjoy the episode. We would love to hear your thoughts!
In this episode of Flesh & Bold, our hosts planned to talk about poverty but because of the “breaking news” around the supreme court leak, they pivot and talk about abortion. Drs. Heard-Garris and Heard account of what happened around the supreme court document leaks, the history of abortion rights in the US and across the pond, and their hopes for the future of women's reproductive rights. You'll never guess who the earliest anti-abortion advocates were, and how capitalism and racial eugenics played a part in this ongoing fight–tune in and educate yo'self.Referenceshttps://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/02/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473https://www.npr.org/2022/05/04/1096154028/the-movement-against-abortion-rights-is-nearing-its-apex-but-it-began-way-beforehttps://www.feminist.com/resources/ourbodies/abortion.htmlhttps://www.americanprogress.org/article/scarlet-letters-getting-the-history-of-abortion-and-contraception-right/

After reading Dr. Marilyn Singleton's op-ed, I felt compelled to interview her. I wanted to examine the validity of the following from her piece. They—whoever they are—say “as California goes, so goes the nation.” Let's hope not. The California state legislature has put forth some bills that boggle the mind and seek to change family, physicians, and their relationship to the government forever.First, the governor and the legislature put their imprimatur on California Future of Abortion (CA FAB) Council recently formed by various “reproductive justice” advocates. They seek to seal California's legacy as a “reproductive freedom” state and are lobbying legislators to enshrine into law their blueprint for abortion services, Recommendations to Protect, Strengthen, and Expand Abortion Services in California. The legislators took the bait. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/support

For the past several decades, conservative forces in the US and Canada have worked to finance and organize Christian fundamentalist sects, the Catholic Church and other organizations to become potentially destabilizing of progressive democratic principles and practices. Powerful interlocking political and corporate forces are seemingly teaming up against women and the disadvantaged in many Southern and Western states and in parts of Canada. These forces have negative effects on women's ability to control and maintain bodily integrity and health, especially among low income women who often are disproportionately affected by restrictions on abortion services. What ought to happen regarding access to these services? The speakers will shed light on the pertinent issues and argue that it's urgent to coordinate and democratically empower individuals, organizations, communities and all levels of Government to produce changes in attitudes, norms, behaviour and policies that will enable women, using their own free will, to obtain reproductive health services, including abortion care. Speakers: Carol Williams, Brittney Adams and Shannon Ingram Carol Williams is a cultural historian specializing in Women & Gender Studies, Visual Culture, and North American Women's History including histories of women's activism. Brittney Adams completed her Bachelor Degree in Political Science from the University of Lethbridge in 2013 and is currently completing her Masters of Arts in Women and Gender Studies.
