Be Passionate is the theme in this episode because being in the film industry can be quite a juggling act trying to catch great paying jobs and then trying to produce a project that will show the world who you really are. The trouble is you need both, the first to pay the bills and the second to meet your own creative aspirations. If one dominates the other either you make tonnes of money but don't really have anything to show what your ideas are about and what your voice is or you struggle to make ends meet because you've gone for the artistic option. In this episode, seven producers, Sean Breathnach, Sinead Cassidy Holt, Frank Kelly, Dave Minogue, Francesca Romana Nider, Dave Thomas, and James Webber, share their thoughts on how they cope with the juggling act.

147. How to Become a Digital Influencer

Monetization Nation Podcast

In the United States, adults use digital media for an average of 7 hours and 50 minutes each day (Source: eMarketer). This includes an average of 145 minutes on social media every day (Source: Statista) plus additional time spent on the web, CTV, digital video, and digital audio. The consumer is spending more and more of their time living in a digital world, and if we want our businesses to succeed, we should market in that same digital world.    Neal is the author of four sales and marketing books including Maximize Your Social and The Age of Influence, a groundbreaking book redefining digital influence. He's also the host of the podcast, Maximize Your Social Influence.   Neal Schaffer is a leading social media strategist who helps innovative businesses digitally transform their sales and marketing strategies. He's the founder of the digital marketing consultancy PDCA Social and is a fractional CMO for several companies. He also teaches digital marketing at Rutgers Business School and the Irish Management Institute.    In today's episode, Neal shared how we can become digital influencers and build our online presence.    Becoming an Influencer    I asked Neal to share the biggest business tectonic shift he sees in today's marketplace and he told me it is the growth of the digital world. Over the past decade, businesses have started waking up and seeing that consumers live in a digital world. They shop online, they consume content online, they communicate online, and they go online for entertainment and solutions to their problems. If we want to succeed, we need to be digitally engaging.    “People are still searching on Google, people are still reading emails, and people are spending a ton of time on social media. You have to nail those three areas,” Neal explained. “They're equally important for different stages of the funnel; they all have the unique roles they play, but [being digital] should be the 100% focus of your marketing today.”   Neal said if we're not creating a digital presence for our businesses, we're going to be invisible to our consumers. We can begin by building our own platforms such as a website or social media account. By expanding our reach, building an audience, and providing unique value to customers, and establishing trust we begin to become influencers in our specific niche.   Neal shared four tips we need to consider as we become digital influencers.     Create Content      To be an influencer, we need to create content. “How are influencers influential today? They have a platform, and they're creating content,” Neal said. “You have got to create a platform. You have got to create content. If you can't do that, you want to tap into other people who can.”    During Neal's entrepreneurial journey, he began tuning into the challenges and issues other people had. He listened to and stayed in direct contact with his customers. While he was paying attention to the people around him, he found there were a lot of issues about marketing technology. He specifically noticed a lot of questions about social media marketing and influencer marketing.   From the problems his customers had, Neal found a way to be a solution. He wanted to give a unique perspective on marketing, so he wrote a book on it and became known for influencer marketing. Not only did he create a book, but he also built a website, created blog content, and started a podcast. If we want to create influence online, it comes down to having a platform and creating content. Most powerful influencers post at least once a day and this often includes posts on multiple platforms. If we want to build influence, we should start creating consistent, frequent, and valuable content at least once a week, but daily would be much better.      Be Passionate     If we want to become an influencer, we need to build an audience of people who are willing to listen to us. To do this, we should start by connecting with our customers' passions, what I call passion marketing. Instead of solely focusing on our own passions, we can find ways our passions overlap with our customers'. As we do this, we begin to establish and build strong relationships with our audience.    “If you want to tap into people with a certain passion, you need to show it yourself,” Neal said. “That's what social media is great for. I think if you do that and share your passion, you will attract these people with that similar passion, who won't mind spending money with you.”   As we share our passions with the digital world, we will eventually find our tribe. People will connect with us through our passions and be more willing to spend money on our product or service if it is something they love.    “When you're really passionate about something, you will invest the money in it,” Neal said. For example, Neal shared that he has a passion for music and so he is willing to spend money on building his CD collection. If we can connect with our customer's passions, we will have a much higher chance of monetizing our businesses.     Stay in Direct Contact With Our Customers     We want to be in direct contact with our customers. It's the only way we will know enough about their problems to effectively solve them.    The biggest mistake Neal made was caused by a lack of connection. While he was working with a company, they lost one of their biggest clients. “We did not know what was going on in the decision-making process and technical evaluations, but our partner was saying, ‘Oh, you're a shoo-in,'” Neal said. “[But] then we didn't get the deal.”    He continued, “You can never assume anything in business. A lot of people internally assume because they're working through a partner, [they already have] direct sales. And to this day, although I see the benefit of working through distributors, you've got to understand what's going on with the client with your own ears.”   We should understand what is going on with our clients and customers at all times. We have to pay attention to what is going on and how their needs and wants are changing. If we aren't in direct contact with our customers, we may have a miscommunication and end up losing them.    “Even if you work through distributors resellers, you have got to keep your finger on the pulse directly because everybody else in between is just out; they have their own business objectives,” Neal said. “You need to check in and really keep your finger on the pulse of that end customer if you ultimately want to be successful.”     Use Failure as an Opportunity for Growth     Despite his failures, Neal was able to push past them and find room for improvement. “With every mistake is an opportunity to improve,” Neal said. “If you're an entrepreneur, you're going to make mistakes. You just don't want to make the same mistake twice.”   As we develop our digital influence, it is essential to remember it will take time and failure to get to the point we want to. We have to accept failure as a lesson and make changes accordingly.    When people hit a roadblock or brick wall, they often get frustrated and want to give up. While it's natural to feel discouraged, we can shift the way we look at challenges so they become less of a roadblock, and more of a hurdle we can jump over. It is about a mindset and attitude shift. If we can look at a mistake as an opportunity to pivot, it will bring so much more success.    We will deal with rejection. Every successful entrepreneur has experienced or will experience rejection. We should view rejection as a sign we need to do something differently to improve. We can take every bad customer review as feedback and a way for growth. As we learn from the feedback, we can build something that will resonate with our customers so we can start to get testimonials and reviews. Positive testimonials and reviews are key to building our influence, but it may take some bad reviews and changes first.    We should remember to keep our vision and final goal in mind. There will always be times of danger, however, if we are serving our community and keep our end goal in mind, we will have the mentality to push the small mistakes aside and not let them get in our way of fulfilling our mission.    Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Neal for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   The consumer is spending more and more of their time living in a digital world. If we want our businesses to succeed, we should do the same.  If we want to build digital influence, we need to create content. We should start creating consistent, frequent, and valuable content at least once a week.  As we connect to our customers' passions, they will be more willing to spend money on our products or services. We want to be in direct contact with our customers. It's the only way we will know enough about their problems to effectively solve them.   If we can look at a mistake as an opportunity to pivot and grow, it will bring so much more success.    Connect with Neal   If you enjoyed this interview and want to learn more about Neal or connect with him, you can find him on LinkedIn or visit his website at NealSchaffer.com. With all the sudden change and stress that many people in her community were going through during Quarantine, she found comfort, balance and activity to keep her busy during a period of INSOMNIA....in the process of sewing straight lines. When she couldn't sleep and with the lack of access to regular coping mechanisms of stress, she created a beautiful intricately designed QUILT out of the scraps left over from the community's efforts to make thousands of masks for the public, teachers and healthcare workers. The process gave her relief and focus knowing that the control of sewing straight lines would result in a product that would have beautiful meaning to her family in the end. But it wasn't until he settled into the city when he discovered Dragon Con when his cable was installed and he saw the event mentioned on local tv. He was immediately hooked and over the years his sci-fi fanhood evolved into being a director for many of the tracks for his favorite shows, starting with the 5 season Fox TV show SLIDERS aired from 1995-2000. Since then he has not missed a single Dragon Con in 28 years! Not even a perforated stomach ulcer and a liquid diet stopped him from attending, until the Pandemic hit and the virtual realm hindered his enthusiasm. He did reveal that there are plans for somewhat of an in person event in the making for 2021 but the plans are not set in stone and probably will not be up to the way that it was pre-pandemic. The Apostle John - From Ordinary to Extraordinary in Christ   We’re calling this sermon series “Ordinary to Extraordinary in Christ”  as we are look at 12 Disciple to see how they were transformed from ordinary to extraordinary.   What does it take to be “EXTRAORDINARY” in Christ?   3 things…  Have an Intimate relationship with Jesus as Master.   (The One you’re Surrendered too) Be Passionate about HIS Message.  (To know Him) Be Intentional about HIS Mission.   (To make Him known) How has the Gospel ~ the Good News of Jesus Christ affected you... today?! How has that changed your affections?  How has that changed your actions? This morning we’re going to be looking at the apostle/disciple JOHN and see how he moves from Ordinary to Extraordinary in Christ. Background John was the son of Zebedee & Salome, younger brother of James.   Fisherman who lived in Bethsaida, Capernaum and Jerusalem. He came from a fairly wealthy family with a successful fishing business. He was a young man of action; he was ambitious, but he didn’t always think things through.  He also had a bad temper and an intolerant heart.  So much so, Jesus called him and his brother James “Boanerges” (Bo-An-ER-Ges) meaning the Sons of Thunder. Yet in the end he is known as The Apostle of Love. Only disciple not martyred for his faith. Believed to have died of old age in Ephesus. Though not specifically stated in scripture, as the youngest disciple, tradition has it that John would likely have been a teenager when Jesus said “follow me”.  In that time he would have been considered an adult and it wouldn’t have been unusual to follow a rabbi at that age, but it could explain some of his youthful arrogance and temperament, though it seems more of a family trait as his older brother James had the same tendences.  Let’s look at John’s life and see how this “Son of Thunder” is transformed into “The Apostle of Love”! How he moves from Ordinary to Extraordinary in Christ!   Matthew records that after Jesus called Peter & Andrew He continued on along the sea of Galilee. Matthew 4:21-22 ~ 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.     When Jesus called John, John didn’t wait around and pray about it for a while.... “Immediately” they left the boat, left Dad and followed Jesus!    John dropped everything to follow Jesus! He knew his life would never be the same!    Are we ready for that?  ...or has our comfort taken precedent over our calling to follow Jesus?     If God wants to rearrange your life, are you ok with it?   ...or do we value the life we know over the life He has for us?     Don’t lose sight of who this Jesus is that has called you to follow Him!! John didn’t and it changed a stubborn prideful fisherman into the extraordinary “Apostle of Love”.   John’s Gospel begins with who this Jesus is...  John 1:1-5, 14nlt ~ In the beginning the Word already existed.     The Word was with God,     and the Word was God. 2 He existed in the beginning with God.3 God created everything through him,     and nothing was created except through him. 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,     and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness,     and the darkness can never extinguish it. 14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.   That’s the Jesus we follow! Don’t settle for ordinary when Jesus is calling you to be extraordinary!   While John was part of Jesus’ inner circle, along with Peter and James,

Ken’s conversation with Mark Frison, president of Assiniboine Community College in Brandon Manitoba, continues this week as they explore ways that higher ed leaders can empower and inspire their people to take ownership and take initiative, to propel innovation on campus.  (If you missed the first part of this interview, about encouraging PSE participation on the prairies, see https://youtu.be/-vksdjuMt2k).   Mark suggests 3 concrete ways to nurture a culture of innovation on campus:   1)  Make Initiative an Explicit Value   ACC has adopted organizational values that encourage all staff and faculty to “Be Passionate. Take Initiative. Deliver Results.” Specifically, the college values urge people to “challenge the status quo and take calculated risks without fear of failure.” Mark believes it is critical to state explicitly to the campus community that risk is inevitable when you innovate.   2)  Invest in Talent through PD   ACC’s talent management action plan, instituted in 2011, has worked to increase its investment in professional development from 1.25% of payroll to almost 3%.  Given the fiscal environment, colleges need to maximize the capabilities and training of all staff.   Ken observes that on most higher ed campuses, there is a disconnect between senior administrators who embrace innovation and seek transformative change, and front-line staff who are anxious about making mistakes, and focused on meeting the short-term objectives of their immediate supervisors.  The further down the organizational hierarchy you go, Ken argues, “the more doing nothing is the safest course of action,” and he wonders how best to transmit the entrepreneurial mindset throughout the organization.  But Mark also observes that front-line staff and faculty are actually the ones most likely to have innovative ideas about serving the student, and thinks the more immediate issue is how to translate ideas UP through the organization.    3) Formalize the Idea Generation Process   That's why ACC implemented a system of written “decision notes” for middle managers, encouraging them to describe new ideas in detail, and make their business case. Training middle managers to write these briefing notes has been “incredibly helpful at dislodging these ideas,” getting ideas onto the table and either moving them forward, or setting them aside.   Mark and Ken agree that there is a “double whammy” of risk aversion in a public-sector, academic institution.  Committees tend to preserve the status quo, and often aren’t even empowered to make decisions. Ultimately, Mark emphasizes, “you do need individuals to feel that they can take risks.”  In many colleges, Ken argues, there is a “learned helplessness” that discourages a sense of personal ownership of decisions or processes. Mark recalls a board member once asking him, “if you owned this thing, what would we be doing differently?” Thinking about your institution with a sense of ownership, and a willingness to take informed risk, engages everyone’s ideas and passions, and encourages an entrepreneurial campus culture.   Mark Frison was appointed President of Assiniboine Community College in August 2010, after serving 5 years as president of Great Plains College and Cypress Hills College in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.  He holds a Masters of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University, and undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Business from Cape Breton University (UCCB at the time).  He has served as Executive Director of the Association of Saskatchewan Regional Colleges, and on the board of Colleges & Institutes Canada.   Every week, 10K explores a world of higher ed innovation and bright ideas.
