It's truly amazing to run into a story that you can't believe actually hasn't been told yet....On this special episode we sit down with the writer/director team of Austin Andrews and Andrew Holmes to talk about their new film; 'The Island Between Tides'.Northern BC, 1982. Six-year-old Lily vanishes. For two days and nights, no one can find the cheery girl who'd strayed onto a remote tidal island. Until she's found at the exact spot she was last seen with no memory of being away. Unharmed but not unaltered. The changes start gradually. Lily develops prodigious musical abilities, sensing the world through a mysteriousmelody only she can hear. But she can't shake her obsession with this island she can't remember, and that her family won't discuss. At 20, the melody leads her back to it, and when she disappears again, this time it's for good. Or so everyone believed. Decades later, Lily reappears. But, impossibly, she looks just as she did the day she vanished. To her, no time passed at all. Still a young woman, the rest of the world has aged around her, her family now whittled down to her elderly father, middle- aged sister, and the troubled son she'd left as an infant. Her assimilation isn't easy, testing even the strongest family's bond. Because this time, Lily didn't come back alone.Wildly considered to be the lost J.M. Barrie story and one that Alfred Hitchcock desperately tried to adapt for the big screen, The Island Between Tides is the kind of genre cinema that evokes memories of films like The Innocents and even Hitchcock's Rebecca (not the crappy Netflix version). We talked with Andrews and Holmes about the making of the film, the revelatory casting of Paloma Kwiatkowski in a leading performance that has the potential to be an absolute breakout turn, the visual esthetic of the film and the importance of Fried Chicken in the creative process along with so very much more....

Niall Campbell is the subject of this month's Nothing But The Poem podcast. The South Uist poet has had three collections of poetry published, has won many major poetry prizes, and is currently poetry editor of Poetry London. ‘Noctuary is a homage to night-time, to "that midnight thrill of being alive", to the small, stray moments that make up a life. It is also a passionately tender examination of what it means to have and care for a small child.' – Suzannah V. Evans, Times Literary Supplement 'The poems in the book place his Hebridean homeland in an ever-shifting mosaic of tidal gifts, memories, folklore, conversations and people. Always there is an awareness of the sea that surrounds, that change is constant, and that there is no going back.' – The Scotsman, Poem of the Week, on The Island in the Sound Our resident podcast host Sam Tongue took an immersive dive into two Niallcampbel poems. The Night Watch from his second collection 'Noctuary' (2019, Bloodaxe) and Apprenticeship from his third collection 'The Island in the Sound' (2024, Bloodaxe). Find out what Sam - and the Friends Of The SPL group - took from these poems in this Nothing But The Poem podcast.

In this conversation, Greg and Meredith explore the 1932 film 'The Island of Lost Souls,' a pre-code horror adaptation of H.G. Wells' 'The Island of Doctor Moreau.' They discuss the film's themes, character dynamics, and the implications of its portrayal of morality and control. The conversation also touches on the cultural and racial implications of the film, the role of women in early cinema, and the efficiency of short films compared to modern media consumption. They delve into the cinematic influences and thematic elements of 'Island of Lost Souls,' exploring its connections to other films, the innovative sound design, and the evolution of horror as a genre. They discuss the impact of H.G. Wells' work on film adaptations, the cultural censorship faced by the movie, and its legacy in the horror genre. Oh baby this is a certified gold episode as Shad Wicka joins us to talk about his time in Cairns. Shad tells us what it was like being a successful breakfast radio producer in Cairns and the luxuries it afforded him with being able to go to the pub at all hours. Shad then tells us a less fortunate tale of his time in radio, the time he inadvertently slandered Scott Morrison and lost his entire career in the industry. We also recount the wild story of the making of 'The Island of Dr Moreau' which involved Marlon Brando demanding his own Mini Me, the production being washed out to see, and the Director being fired and having a nervous breakdown then sneaking back onto the production in a dog costume. This one is wild. Get into it. And if you have been living under a rock, we also have a Patreon! Although we don't recommend subscribing if your housing situation is that dire. The Land Behind: Conversations on Photography, Perception and Place
Peter speaks to Robert Darch about his new self-published photobook 'The Island'. As a self-described “artist-photographer”, Robert was born and raised in the Midlands. In the early 2000's, he studied his BA in Photography at Newport in South Wales before falling seriously ill for a number of years. After his recovery he found himself in Devon, where in 2013 he returned to study his MFA at the University of Plymouth under the guidance of Jem Southam. Drawing inspiration from his personal life experiences, Robert's work is a profound reflection on the complex nuances of the histories to which our cultural existence belongs. His latest photobook 'The Island' is a visual response to the psychological impact of political events, in this case the resulting social consequences of the Brexit referendum in 2016.https://www.robertdarch.com/Join the conversation on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thelandbehind

Author Elif Shafak struggled at first with how to write her new book, The Island of Missing Trees. The story she wanted to tell is about a family from Cyprus, a Mediterranean island that was the center of a conflict in the 1970s, but she didn't want the story to be about tribalism or nationalism. Which is why, Shafak told NPR's Steve Inskeep, much of the story is told from the perspective of a fig tree

Movie "The Island" - Commentary by David Hoffmeister - Weekly Online Movie WorkshopThe movie "The Island" and Davids's commentary show us the awakening process right through from when we are in a deceived, conforming state to when we realize that what was considered to be life was not really life at all. We are basically a society of men and women deceived from birth who need to discover their true identity. We need to join in relationships of purpose. Our training is to follow prompts and become highly intuitive and determined to overcome the ego's attempts at stopping us from exposing the darkness. David lays bare the ego's temptation to go off and build a haven for ourselves and points out the Spirit's call to us to extend love to everyone by going deep into the mind and flip the master switch that dismantles the ego's illusion entirely. In the process, we learn to face the fear and allow the light to shine through, thereby freeing everyone as we open up to the light, even those who seem to be the enemy join in the celebration of innocence and freedom.Enjoy David's profound and bold commentary that dismantles our illusions about freedom. You can watch the whole introduction to the movie here on YouTube: https://youtu.be/u6y-FBjAyQo.If you are interested to know more about David Hoffmeister and Living Miracles events, here is more information: https://circle.livingmiraclescenter.org/events.Recorded on August 14, 2021, in Chapala, Mexico.

Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey made headlines over the weekend by vetoing 22 bills passed by his state's legislature. He claims he vetoed these bills because Arizona lawmakers need to pass a budget and have it on his desk ASAP. But is that the real reason? Also, I am down to the last little bit of Russell Shorto's 'The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America.' Let's take some time to unpack how the attitudes and organization of the Dutch imprinting themselves early-on in the colony of New Netherlands and the trading port of New Amsterdam helped to shape how the 13 colonies ultimately came together to form The United States of America as we know it today. If one looks closely, one can almost see current New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the comedians at Saturday Night Live in the 17th century historical sketch Shorto provides. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Ruth grew up in West Haven, Connecticut. She was a 1957 graduate of West Haven High School. Her distinguished 40-year financial career in banking began in high-school when she worked part- time at Union Trust Company in New Haven. During her tenure, a time of bank acquisitions, her positions included Vice-President of Financial Control, Vice-President of Commercial Loans and General Ledger. She was respectfully and affectionately referred to as "Ma" by the numerous officers and staff who reported to her as she was known for her nurturing leadership style. She retired in 1995 as Vice-President and Assistant Comptroller for Wells Fargo Bank. A truly wonderful woman, about whom many would remark, "If you knew her, you loved her." Ruth's greatest love was her devoted husband, Ed, and their family. Together they shared a love of travel and embarked on numerous trips to Europe, "Sis" gathering many friends along the way. She would knit clothing for gifts as opposed to buying them, cook from old recipe books. She enjoyed gardening and entertaining as a gracious hostess. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Ruth's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Listen in to discover what creates such incredible spirit and lust for life. You'll also learn what he fears most in life and what he's most afraid of during this incredible challenge. Frank likes a challenge! In 2017, he spent five weeks on a deserted island for the Channel 4 programme, 'The Island with Bear Grylls'. Before that, he was only the 10th person to ever circumnavigate North and South America by boat. His passion for challenges started back in the 1980s when he started running marathons and since then he's also competed in the Scottish Six-Day Trials motorcycle race, sailed around the world, likes to heli-ski and builds his own coal-fired steam traction engines. Frank hopes to raise £1 million for Alzheimer's Research UK. which will be helped by the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation, which has generously offered to match-fund the first £500,000 of donations. Please visit Frank's Just Giving page and make a donation. JustGiving/FrankRothwell
Today’s guest embodies what it means to be a versatile and creative storyteller. Actor, writer, and producer, Kathleen Rose Perkins, has had an expansive career that has led her to varied roles in both comedy and drama in the world of film and television. Today, she walks us through the lulls as well as the highs of her journey starting from what she learned doing background work in Los Angeles, to what it was like to be fired from a job...more than once, to taking creative control of her career and writing the stories that she wants to tell without having to rely on anyone else to do it for her. Kathleen knows what it’s like to struggle to find representation that feels like a good fit. Early on, she felt the urge to give up when only receiving a few auditions a year. Now, having found a manager that’s been with her from the start, she emphasizes how important it is to communicate with your reps about exactly what it is you want out of your career. Over the years, she’s appeared in over 70 projects including Netflix’s I Am Not Okay with This , Showtime’s Episodes , NCIS: Los Angeles , ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat , USA’s Colony , and films such as The Skeleton Twins opposite Kristen Wiig, Gone Girl opposite Ben Affleck, and many more. Today, she shares her wisdom and knowledge about how she works through audition anxiety, her methods for preparing for a big emotional scene, and most of all, how she makes sure she’s always busy working. David gives a pre-movie talk which lasts until 10 minutes and 5 seconds. At this point we recommend you watch the movie, then resume the audio to listen to the commentary from during and after the movie.Below is the Holy Spirit write-up included in our online Movie Watcher's Guide to Enlightenment. For more enlightening movie reviews, and audios, subscribe at MWGE.org.The IslandThe Island is a fantastic metaphysical movie, showing the awakening process right through from being in a deceived, conforming state, to realizing that what was considered to be life was not really life at all. A society of men and women, who are deceived from birth, need to discover their true identity in this sci-fi action film. The main characters are joined in a relationship of purpose, in which they have to follow their prompts and become highly intuitive and determined to overcome the ego’s attempts at stopping them from exposing the darkness. It shows the ego’s temptation to go off and build a safe haven, and the Spirit’s call to extend love to everyone by going deep into the mind and flipping the master switch that dismantles the ego’s illusion entirely, allowing the light to shine through and free everyone. As everyone opens up to the light, even those who may have seemed to be the enemy join in the celebration of innocence and freedom.Recorded at La Casa de Milagros, Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico on the 16th of September, 2017.
In this episode you will hear Liis talking about the poem that has been a friend to her - 'The Island' by A.A. Milne. Liis visited us at Wise Words Festival in Canterbury. For the first time, we held The Poetry Exchange in a public space, amongst the poetry books at Waterstones, Rose Lane, Canterbury. We are very grateful to both Waterstones and to Wise Words for hosting The Poetry Exchange so warmly. www.wisewordsfestival.co.uk www.waterstones.com/events/search/s…rbury-rose-lane Liis is in conversation with The Poetry Exchange team members Sarah Salway and John Prebble. ***** The Island If I had a ship, I'd sail my ship I'd sail my ship Through Eastern seas; Down to the beach where the slow waves thunder - The green curls over and the white falls under - Boom! Boom! Boom! On the sun-bright sand. Then I'd leave my ship and I'd land, And climb the steep white sand, And climb to the trees The six dark trees, The coco-nut trees on the cliff's green crown - Hands and knees To the coco-nut trees, Face to the cliff as the stones patter down, Up, up, up, staggering, stumbling, Round the corner where the rock is crumbling, Round this shoulder, Over this boulder, Up to the top where the six trees stand.... And there would I rest, and lie, My chin in my hands, and gaze At the dazzle of sand below, And the green waves curling slow And the grey-blue distant haze Where the sea goes up to the sky.... And I'd say to myself as I looked so lazily down at the sea: "There's nobody else in the world, and the world was made for me."

Sun, Apr 08 2007 Mister Ron's Basement #690 Today we begin a NEW Monday Book Serialization with Max Adeler's 1880 novelette, 'The Fortunate Island,' concerning an American professor and his daughter stranded on a mysterious island filled with castles, knights, and descendants of King Arthur's kingdom. Adeler was convinced that Mark Twain's 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court,' published eight years after 'The Fortunate Island,' had plagiarized much of his novel. There are certainly some compelling arguments to be made for Adeler's case. In any event, we will be serializing the entire story for you to decide for yourself. It's a lot of fun! Today, we present the first part of the first chapter, 'The Island.' Time: approx fifteen minutes The Mister Ron's Basement Full Catalog can be found at: http://ronevry.com/Mister_Rons_Full_Catalog.html The Max Adeler Catalog of Stories is at: http://ronevry.com/maxadeler.html The Max Adeler Fortunate Island Catalog is at: http://ronevry.com/Fortunate_Island_Serialized.html
