It's a new chapter for Ray Orb, as he is now adjusting to life after being the president of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) for the last ten years, and twenty overall with the Board. Orb talks about what he has seen in his two decades with the organization, working with different levels of government, the key issues, accomplishments and regrets.Root rot in pulse crops has grown to be a devastating issue for growers across Western Canada, so a team of University of Saskatchewan (USask) researchers and colleagues at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the National Research Council(NRC) led by Dr. Sabine Banniza (PhD) of USask's Crop Development Centre (CDC) is searching for ways to beat it.Banniza, a professor with the College of Agriculture and Bioresources, received more than $4.2 million from the Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) to uncover solutions for root rot in pea and lentil crops. As Banniza puts it, root rot in pea and lentil has become so prevalent in Western Canada it has caused growers to stop planting the crops in some areas. New developments in testing are expected to provide soybean growers with valuable information to fend off yield-robbing root rot caused by the water mould known as Phytophthora sojae. Beyond crop rotation and drainage, selecting varieties with genetic resistance, via major genes and overall field tolerance, is the best management tool for mitigating phytophthora infection, but... Root rot is a condition of indoor and outdoor plants. Root rot may be caused by poorly drained or overwatered soil, or soil-borne pathogens and nematodes.
Western Canadian soils are generally neutral to slightly basic in pH values. On average, there’s plenty of buffering capacity to the soil in the west but that doesn’t mean there aren’t pockets of acidic conditions. What’s more, research is proving out to show that long-term zero-till combined with applied fertilizers is creating an acidic area... Read More

Every year, pulse growers are on the lookout for root rots which can wreak havoc on not just the current crop but also have impact on future crop rotation decisions. Aphanomyces and fusarium are the main root rots of concern, and can be tough to distinguish from each other. In this episode of the Pulse School, Sabine... Read More
What exactly is root rot, and how can we best protect our plants?
Root rot continues to be a concern for pulse growers and although work is being done on creating varieties that are more resistant to diseases such as aphanomyces, that reality is likely at least eight years away. In the interim, growers are encouraged to employ a comprehensive rotation schedule to best combat root rot in... Read More
With several years of drought affecting the West, tree nut and citrus growers are now seeing an underground issue: Phytophthora root rot. This disease infects the tissue of plants, affecting overall plant health. With decreased irrigation intensity, orchards decline and tree death may begin to increase. Syngenta Agronomic Service Manager Chris Clemens joins us to talk about management tactics available for growers, including the Syngenta Soil Pathogen Assessment (SPA), a program that assesses Phytophthora infections on a field-by-field basis.
Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents -According to BC Hydro, more than half the province's power outages are caused by falling trees. That number is probably higher on Cortes and Quadra Islands, which are heavily forested. Trees appear to be dropping on the power lines every time there is a storm. There are also large numbers of relatively young trees falling over in the forest, and in people's yards. Some of them were critically weakened by root rot. In yesterday's interview, General Manager Mark Lombard said a significant number of the fir trees that Cortes Forestry General Partnership recently harvested were afflicted by root rot. So Cortes Currents asked, “how do you recognize root rot?” Lombard suggested, “Look at the fir trees. In a healthy fir tree, the crown will be green and typically fairly uniform and vibrant. It's very similar to a house plant or any plant that you have in the garden. If you look at a plant that has brown on the leaves or the leaves are curled up, or the plant looks yellowish, you can tell it's not very healthy as opposed to the really healthy plant that's green and flowering. It's the exact same thing with the fir trees, or any of the trees.” Hemlock are particularly susceptible to mistletoe, and red cedar to drought. Root rot is one of the principle threats to Douglas Fir. Some of the victims are immediately recognizable among the wind blown trees in the forest. “Sometimes you'll see a fir tree that has fallen over and there's just a little nub of a root. There's hardly any lateral roots that came up and not much soil. That's a sign of root rot,” explained Lombard. “Another kind of root rot can make the tree rot in the stump and just up the first couple of meters of the stem. So sometimes you'll see a fir tree that shattered and broke off. If you look carefully, you'll notice that there's just the outer sapwood ring left, and the heartwood has rotted away. When it falls over the sapwood shatters. You can see the tree broken off, which is unlikely because fir is such a strong tree. Those are some of the signs of root rot, and it's not always easy to see.” The BC Ministry of Forests handbook ‘Managing Root Disease in British Columbia' lists a number recommended treatments. Replant the area with species less susceptible to root rot ‘Stump removal has been shown to reduce root rot disease in the majority of cases where it has been applied.' Pushover harvesting has been shown to be as effective as stump removal ‘Hardwoods are less susceptible to infection and more tolerant to disease.' The roots of birch in particular ‘can form a barrier to underground disease movement.' Biological controls are introduced agents that can displace or prevent colonization by pathogenic fungi and prevent the spread of disease. Lombard suggested people wanting more information look up Suzanne Simard at UBC, who's doing the Mother Tree Project and Paul Stamets who has been researching fungi for years.

Welcome back!Lilly is wrapping up her relaxing spring break by coming on and giving everyone a school update followed by some deep-rooted questions. The title of today's episode should be read as ironic. She has been wondering what it is that is killing her plants, possibly root rot. But also questioning why she feels the need to update those around her, maybe a bit too much. Maybe a dramatic, but interesting connection that was made was that the lack of keeping her plants alive may not be her fault. And her issues of anxiety may not all be her parent's fault either.

Scientists are continuing to investigate root rot in pulse crops. It was particularly bad in pea and lentil crops in western Canada this year. Extending the crop rotation has been the only way to manage the disease once it is present in a field. Agriculture and Agri-food Canada Researcher Syama Chatterton has been studying this issue and is now recommending producers sample the soil for the presence of the spores. Dr. Chatterton will explain the latest work on aphanomyces. It's been a difficult year as we adjust to the realities of COVID-19 with the disruption of social events, the economy and interpersonal relationships. Fighting burnout and compassion fatigue is a real issue. Dr. Jody Carrington is child psychologist from Olds, Alberta. During a recent virtual presentation, she talked about emotional dysregulation, what causes it and the importance of face to face connection. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As the 2020 growing season comes to an end, there is still a lot growers can do to prepare for 2021, including tracking potential root rot incidents in their fields, and planning best ways to mitigate risk in additional fields. In this podcast episode, Sherrilyn Phelps, Agronomy Manager talks with Dr. Syama Chatterton, Research Scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada - Lethbridge about what factors growers should consider planning 2021 crop rotations, to minimize and manage the risk of root rots developing in their fields.

Abstract: Due to the field soil changes, high density planting, and straw-returning methods, wheat common root rot (spot blotch) and Fusarium crown rot (FCR) have become severe threatens to global wheat productions. Only a few wheat genotypes show moderate resistance to these root and crown rot fungal diseases, and the genetic determinants of wheat resistance to these two devastating diseases have been poorly understood. This review summarizes the recent progress of genetic studies on wheat resistance to common root rot and Fusarium crown rot. Wheat germplasms with relative higher resistance are highlighted and genetic loci controlling the resistance to each of the disease are summarized. Copy rights belong to original authors. :Phytophthora cinnamoni and other species of Phytophthora are a common problem for landscape plants. This fungi causes root and crown rots. Phytophthora and laurel oak ( Quercus laurifolia ) have lived simultaneously in the southeast United States for close to 200 years, but recently the fungi has become a serious issue among laurel oaks. Join us for this episode of Science of Arboriculture as Dr. Steve Jeffers discusses this problem, and treatment methods for preventing death among laurel oaks.
